Francophile, hispanophile; lover of all things European and scouse. Travel, theatre,politics, dogs.Head of Languages, and slightly frazzled mum πͺπΊπ«π·πͺπΈππ
@ClaireEMcD
We engineered a raffle last year for a pupil to win at Christmas who said she didn't get presents because mum, who has mental health issues, thought it was a waste/too commercial/grabby.
Wow, visiting other countries definitely makes you realise how crap England is. No wonder the govt make it difficult for us to travel, they don't want us to see it. I'm only in Spain but everything is easier, cheaper, cleaner, friendlier.

Got my Back to School hair, brows and nails appointments today. Then to buy my pencil case and new shoes! 17 years in and I still get excited about the start of term π
@PaulGarvey4
Beyond exhausted. Easily put in 60 hours this week. Last lesson today, Y8 bottom set. Did a raffle for good effort. Class clown wins - typical. Picks his prize, Smarties.
"You can have them Miss, for your daughter" Floored! ππ
@GillianKeegan
My first 10 years of teaching (in Knowsley) were under Labour and we never had it better - Every Child Matters, Surestart, EMA, Repayment of Teacher Loans, AimHigher, Connexions..... the next 10 years under your crowd have been an absolute binfire. And you know it.
@RussInCheshire
49. Payrise for teachers announced today as a 'thank you'. This is not new - it was signed off in January and is not Covid-related. Money to come out of existing budgets, so they're giving us nothing except redundancies, essentially.
@ourkaty
Much gorgeousness here. I've only got a surly almost 12 year old but I made her her own cheeseboard last night, with nice crackers, apple, grapes etc. She thought we were all sharing it so when I said it was just for her, she was delighted 'MY OWN PERSONAL CHEESEBOARD!' ππ§
@mathninja3
@MrBlachford
I caught a boy hiding at the back of a classroom smoking, on the phone to the bookies, putting his bets on. He said if I didn't said anything, he'd split the winnings with me...
New teachers - here's a lil tip from me. Book some nice things towards end of Sept. First two weekends your head will be falling off. Third week, the tiredness is manageable, the marking isn't piling up (yet) and it's still quite warm and sunny. A bit of countryside is nice π
@DrNostromo
Called it from day one when I saw their massive house and pool. 5 mins of googling led to the daughter's PR career and connections to Boris Johnson. Never trust a Tory. As for the weird war fetishism that prevails in the UK, I'll never ever understand it.
Hey, female teachers in your 40s - where are you getting your work clothes from? I need a load of new stuff. I like dresses and knitwear and natural fabrics. Talk to me.

here. Feel much more aligned with my European counterparts than USA or any other country. Happy that the EU has brought us funding (esp in my home city), laws, but most of all, peace. Still as gutted as I was three years ago.

We must always keep at the front of our minds that school is a sanctuary for many, and the day spent chilling watching a film next to your best friend who isn't allowed to come to your house might be the highlight of the summer for some.
@always_hope83
My Y6 daughter is having a blast since returning. With no Sats pressure, they've done loads of outdoor learning, loads of fun experiments in Science Week, made kinetic sand, done a triathlon... she's come home buzzing every day, it's been a joy to see.
@mrlockyer
To be fair, our Y11 staff have put on extra sessions every single lunchtime and many, many afterschool sessions all year. So I prefer to think of it as Owed Time. They've earned it back.
@Nicola_M_N_
My Y6 daughter confessed to me that she'd smuggled a book out of the class library today to bring home and finish over the weekend because it was so good π
@TeacherBusy
There's a huge regression. Plus the transition itself takes up all their brain in the first term, so much remembering of where to go and when, and 15 different teachers' expectations. They only really start getting back to their potential after Christmas.
@blackforager
Small British me stood at the pool bar counter waiting to order lunch. 3 loud Spanish guys come and enquire about opening times, then say 'while I'm here, can I order...' I just cut across them in Spanish - I was here first, it's my turn. Counter lady said 'yes she was' Proud!

@JudeWillford
Some of mine have thrived at home, away from poorly behaved peers in their mixed ability classrooms. Not having to wait around for everyone to be 'looking this way and listening' etc has been liberating for them.
@mark_robo
@miss_mcinerney
My students said to me "why would anyone be a teacher and get spoken to like crap?" They have a point. Behaviour has declined - it's a combination of factors - the insta-world, having to have an opinion about everything and voice it, crap parenting, parents working all hours.
@katherineschof8
We had 6 (six!) years of PPTs, posters, speeches and 'Wanted: Dog' posters stuck up in our street. She even pretended to be one for A YEAR and ate from a bowl on the floor. Sponsored 3 guide dogs. Bought every electronic dog going. But.... this Christmas Eve:

Even though I'd seen all his antics myself, I still believed him about falling off a ladder at work - that's how good an actor Stephen Graham is π
@HelenHallmark
We had a fire drill at school last week. I quickly messaged the class at home on Teams to tell them and said I'd be back in 20 mins. One if them wrote 'should we go outside?' π
@a_nother_tchr
Hang on while I pull a knowledge organiser and easy-accessible worksheet out of my arse while still listening to Josh's answer and keeping an eye on where the gluestick lids are landing.
@ScottPughsley
One time I walked into a classroom at break and a Y10 boy was sat quietly at the back smoking a cig and putting his bets on over the phone, Racing Post open in front of him. He actually shhhh'd me aswell.
@SuzanneatSavvy
Remember EMA for sixth formers keeping them in education, City Learning Centres in schools, Repayment of Teacher Loans over 10 years to help recruitment, and the jewel in the crown- Surestart. Can't begin to tell you what a difference that made to me as a new mum in 2010.
@Teacherglitter
I'm secondary. I don't care what they write will or how neat it is, as long as they can write relatively quickly and they can read it back. Literally no jobs require neat cursive handwriting (except, ironically, primary teaching)

As a teacher, I did 100% of my job during Lockdown 1 and got 100% of my pay.

Course he has. About bloody time.
2024 - the year of sniffing out grifters, binning off influencers and the Capt Tom Spa being demolished. Delicious.
@ClareRees3
Walked in on a Y9 kid sat in the back of a classroom at breaktime, smoking a cigarette, on the phone to Betfred putting his bets on.
He teaches there now.
@KIWitney
There were so many negative headlines in the run-up to the Olympics about things not being ready. It was a very wet summer. People were cynical. Then suddenly - it was wonderful. 3 weeks of absolute euphoria in the UK.
@clhubes
Daughter needed 'an interesting stone' for school the next day (don't ask).
Other grandads: looks in back garden, finds stone.
My dad: drives to beach, spends a morning looking for fossils, carefully curates a selection (in case any didn't have one), washes them, delivers them.
I am overwhelmed by the generosity shown by so many businesses in my northern Tier 3 town offering free meals and drinks to children and families who need it in half term. I guess ToryScum forget that kindness will always ALWAYS win β€ Go northerners, you lovely people β€
@lizzy_doxsey
@nmgarrard
Yes. I often buy food, snacks and carton drinks, even treats, telling my class 'my daughter didn't like these, would anyone like them'.
@DeputyGrocott
I prefer the term 'owed time'. You provide unpaid revision classes once a week after school for pretty much the whole of Y11, many lunchtimes, email support, pre-exam masterclasses... you get a bit of it back in June/July, if you're not taken for cover.
@ScottPughsley
- Those Kenco 3 in 1 sachets are a lifesaver for 3.30 meetings after a full day of teaching
- can never have too many post-it notes/plastic envelope wallets
- visualiser copy gets stuck in absent kid's book
- it's fine to go to bed at 8pm in September...
@RogersHistory
I walked away, broken. Had an extended break. Tentatively stepped back, on supply. Found a lovely school. Did a couple of long-term supply contracts there. Now HOD. We have amazing kids, they gave me back my spark.
@MrBoothY6
Worked in an an academy recently where it felt like a year long episode of the Apprentice... absolute nightmare. Cheap suits and nodding dogs everywhere. Pretty sure I was the only teacher who hadn't published a book.
@mathninja3
@MrBlachford
Don't know, I spoiled his fun and turfed him out! This was a crazy place too, about 15 years ago. So many stories, I'll write the book one day! They used to try to sell me dogs all the time. Often got asked if I needed anything from the booze/cig run to France.

I worked in a school a few years back that covered the cost of an ironing lady - you brought your ironing in and collected it all done from the staffroom. Not many folk iron these days I think, I certainly don't!

Most rescues say no households with children, people who work, no experience of breed....rules out a lot of us! We searched for two years, then got a puppy from a breeder, she's thriving.
@CPJElmore
@Conservatives
We were directed to be off site by 3.30 each day. There were signs up everywhere saying max 1 or 2 people in this workroom. We don't even have a staffroom!

Hell, no - from a teacher π Draw a little heart on their hand. Tell them to press it when they feel sad and you'll feel the hug π
