Another way to look at this: without these gleaming towers for the ultra-rich, they'd still be here in Boston but just outbidding you and me and pushing us out of more moderately priced homes in our neighborhoods.

Gleaming towers for the ultra-rich have sprouted across the Boston skyline, with many condos selling for $2 million and more. Who can afford that? Just 1.7 percent of Boston households.

I'm so tired of people in luxury single family homes decrying the creation of new condos in their neighborhoods. I challenge you to find a single family home of any vintage that is less expensive than a new condo in the same neighborhood.

Thx to zoning reform in Mpls, average rents grew slower (1%) over 5-years than is allowed in a single yr under their neighbor St. Paul's strict 3% rent cap. Evidence keeps coming: housing abundance stabilizes rents & reduces homelessness. Supply skepticism is not evidence-based.

My triple decker was built in 1896 and is inches from our next door neighbor (we can reach out and touch each other through our kitchen windows), and the building takes up about 90% of the yard. This IS the historic neighborhood character throughout much of Boston.

@jessekb It depends on what size “triple decker”. Near me one was built that fills the entire lot with only inches between it and neighboring houses. It actually fills what was the yard and goes past the house behind it, blocking a window.

The replies to this tweet are so unhinged from reality. Prob a bunch of conservatives in NH that haven't actually stepped foot in Boston for 10 years.

I don't actually know anything about this project, but the many people in the replies saying "why" clearly haven't priced a hotel in the City of Boston recently.

This is huge. Still digging into the details but it appears Housing Choice will likely become law, requiring only simple majority vote for zoning changes that allow affordable, multifamily and transit-oriented development in communities across the Commonwealth.

I'm glad that I could contribute to this necessary article. While not only black people benefit frm affordable housing, because of multigenerational, structural racism they are disproportionately represented among its resident. As a white person I will...

In Boston, we're talking about rent stabilization schemes designed to allow rents to INCREASE by ~10% every year! Why is it so hard for us to talk about doing things that are proven to DECREASE housing costs? Reform zoning to allow more homes of all types, at all income levels.

Austin continues to be a national leader on zoning reform. Last year they built more homes than any other city in America. Instead of rents going up which some claim building new homes causes, average rents are DOWN 7% since last year. Boston/MA could learn from them.

Can you believe it? My 2 year old's daycare asked us to provide PROOF that he's been vaccinated against certain childhood illnesses because apparently there is some sort of VACCINE MANDATE if you want to go to day care or school in Massachusetts!

So many major American cities, including those with extreme housing crises (👋 Boston) just got lapped by this little city of 200k people.

The "Building Opportunity and Choices for All initiative" unanimously passed Spokane City Council last night. The zoning ordinance allows duplexes, triplexes, quadplexes and townhomes in all residential zones.

Jaywalking isn't inherently bad. It was a concept pushed by the nacient car industry to gain supremacy in the streets. Streets are for people. Let's get back to our roots, Boston.

Thank you @MassAGO @AndreaForAG for this this very clear advisory statement: the MBTA Communities multifamily zoning mandate is LAW that towns MUST follow. Opt-out is NOT an option, and if you try your town may be subject to Civil Enforcement Action.

Is the YIMBY movement anti-democratic? The vibe I get is "we must override local democracy because people keep voting for the wrong thing - protecting their local amenity" Just saying.

IANAL, but my reading of AG's suit is that, if Milton does not adopt compliant zoning w/in 3 mos of an injunction, the town will effectively be unable to enforce zoning in areas covered by MBTA CA - half mile around any station on the Milton side of the Mattapan line.

Complex public policy questions shouldn't be decided by popular vote. We have representative democracy for a reason. Many ppl have told me they're really confused about ?s 2 & 3 this year that they'll either just blank or vote no in protest. This does not lead to good outcomes.
