Medical Specialties as Dog Breeds
1. General/Trauma Surg -> German Shepherds
Hardworking, sharp, and confident. Will save the day, dependable in crisis. Can be very intimidating but are friendly once you get to know them and very loyal.
โNobody likes abortions.โ
I do actually. I like that people donโt die from ectopic pregnancies or sepsis from missed abortions. I like that people donโt have to bear the pregnancy of their abuser. I like that people get to make choices about their body.
Iโm not hedging about abortion rights. Iโm simply not. Even if we do get universal healthcare or free child care, people are still entitled to abortion & other reproductive rights. Period.
You can be deeply passionate and committed to something and still not want to work 100 hour weeks the rest of your life. Thatโs sanity not laziness & yes I will die on this hill.
I wish patients didnโt feel like they had to apologize for their bodies.
You donโt need to apologize for dirty hair, no makeup, scars, lumps and bumps and rolls, smells, blood or bowel movements. I did not go into medicine for bodies to come to me conventionally โperfect.โ
(A โmissed abortionโ is a miscarriage that the body has yet to deliver and is instead more or less stuck in the uterus btw. For non-medical folks.)
In medical school I got told I would need to reschedule my doctors appts or be failed on the rotation rather than give me time off.
Med students here come in and say โhey I have a doctors appt I need to leave by 1 todayโ and we say โokay!โ and I think thatโs beautiful โค๏ธ
I once referenced the heartโs โejaculation fractionโ in case you needed to hear someone else having a more embarrassing medical school moment than you this week
Physician self-sacrificial work culture is also built off the backs of the free labor of women who were (and are) expected to pick up every last bit of domestic labor to enable their partner to nobly work 100 hours a week but without any of the associated respect
me in the icu with absolute chaos: calm, collected, focused on the task at hand
me running 15 minutes behind in my primary care clinic: shaking, crying, throwing up
Sorry Iโve been awol Iโve been happy crying intermittently and celebrating with my parents-
I matched to my top choice and I am thrilled beyond words ๐ญโฃ๏ธ
the tension between the hospital screening questionnaire asking me if Iโve had any known COVID19 contact and me needing to say โnoโ so I can enter the hospital andโฆ. take care of my COVID19+ patients
if I ever become a rich med school alum I think instead of an academic merit scholarship Iโm gonna build some apartments students can live in for free. provide a fund for student medical needs. a scholarship for child care. take on some premed mentees and pay for their mcat
ER -> Saint Bernard
Will rescue anyone, anytime, anywhere. Works to exhaustion but sulks if left out of any fun. Tolerant and loving, referred to as saint for a reason. (May we suggest not skiing in a snow storm though?)
getting a nastygram that I am an hour late on seeing a patient that I in fact saw the patient
and when I pointed out I wrote a note and also staffed with the attending
being told I must have pre-wrote that note because the patient is saying he only saw a nurse ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป
hi fellow white med students it is 2020 and we are reporting preceptors & professors that say racist shit to us thinking we will go along bc we are also white.
protect patients & your peers.
see also: men reporting sexism, hetero/cis students reporting homo/transphobia, etc
2. Pediatrics -> Golden Lab
Extremely friendly, good with kids, and full of warm fuzzies.
Outgoing and energetic, can be a little overwhelming for more reserved individuals. Still beloved by all and will go to the ends of the earth for those they take care of.
Family Med -> Corgi
If you donโt like a corgi thereโs something wrong with you. Tenacious spirits that love and accept everyone. You wonโt meet a friendlier breed anywhere. Great at troubleshooting and thinking outside of the box. Usually chatty and playful.
If 24 hour shifts are so great, how come we donโt ask that of nurses too? pilots? heavy machinery operators? truckers? air traffic controllers?
I respect that some people have a personal preference and that many provide good care despite exhaustion. But. We can dream bigger.
My match day video is pretty much just me hyperventilating and then being stunned and dumbfounded with disbelief.
I feel so lucky- no ties to the area, a step1 20+ points below their average, missed my happy hour because muds broke the laptop, he puked through my interviews....
Internal Med -> Golden Retriever
All around dependable workhorse and fan favorite. Versatile, adaptable, and intelligent. Not always the flashiest but extremely reliable and affable. Loves people.
hey for everyone who is gonna be an intern this summer one of my biggest pro tips is that in addition to asking the patientโs nurse what has been going on and what their concerns are- ask them what they need from you and if there are any orders that need to be adjusted.
Ortho -> Husky
Most likely to get in trouble when bored. Super strong and super smart, they are also free-spirited and good natured. Natural athletes who wonโt shy away from hard work and take deep pleasure in their purpose in life.
very gently let me say that someone could have spent 100 hours describing the medical school experience to me and I would not have grasped what it was I โsigned up for.โ
I like my choice, I would choose it again- but itโs something you canโt understand without doing it.
the worst thing about the shitty parts of medical school is that they arenโt even necessary for good patient care.
the disrespect of your time, infantilization of learners, enduring verbal abuse, literally none of that is required in any way for good patient care.
Psychiatry -> Beagles
Amiable, even tempered and gentle. Thrives with people, is probably having a rough time in social isolation. Unflappable cheerleaders known for their generally cheerful disposition.
hey before you start intern year download the doximity app and use doximity dialer if you ever need to call patients or families from your own phone just trust me on this one
Neurosurg -> Border Collie
Can work for days on end performing extremely complex tasks. Renowned for their intelligence but can be standoffish with strangers. Dependable and happiest when kept busy. Frequently leaves others in awe.
Anesthesia -> Jack Russell Terrier
Excels in short but extreme bursts of speed to catch small prey. Assertive and fearless, they are excellent at their niche. So intelligent it can be hard to keep up. Can count on them to get the job done. Occasionally feisty with other breeds.
The overworking of residents directly impacts our mental health - the rate of depression is 3x higher in trainees working 90 hour weeks than those working 40 hour weeks.
Medical training harms us.
Nepotism in medicine is so extremely real and if you want to pretend otherwise go argue with the wall.
Yes, I know some immensely talented physicians who come from physician families that I admire and respect. Incidentally they would be first to acknowledge their leg up.
Radiology -> Basset Hounds
Homebodies who are content to stay inside, no one is better at picking up something everyone else has missed to solve the puzzle and save the day. Indispensable. Frequently have a unique sense of humor and calm disposition.
Pathology -> Chihuahua
Donโt get the respect or appreciation they deserve. If you come into their space suddenly and touch everything youโre gonna get barked at, but otherwise friendly. Sometimes eccentric. Devoted to their chosen field/family.
Medical students shouldnโt have to join the military to pay off their loans.
I am so tired of that being offered as the solution to the exorbitant debt we are put in.
the entire set up of this career field was predicated on being a white man with a stay at home wife who could take care of the house, your kids, you, ad infintium
I got stuck at the hospital yesterday way longer than I anticipated - so when I got home I apologized to my boyfriend that he had to sit in my apartment parking lot for 30 minutes with the dinner he picked up for us.
โItโs okay, I used the time to pick up some cupcakes.โ
๐ฅบ
3. Dermatology -> Saluki
Beautiful and aloof. Cannot be parted from creature comforts but are quite smart. Dignified, graceful, and committed to the aesthetic game.
I just think itโs funny that ACGME asks whether โmy program has instructed me on how to minimize the effects of sleep deprivation on patient careโ rather than asking if I have been compelled to work so many hours that sleep deprivation has impacted patient care or my own wellness
On doctorsโ appreciation day I wasnโt even allowed access to the physician lounge feast but during nurses week Iโve gotten free breakfast, free compression socksโฆ.. ๐ง
I think youโre all wrong about both the physical exam *and* POCUS.
Personally I do not touch my patients at all, I merely stand at a distance and receive vibes. I simply use my superior intellect to manipulative the space time continuum and visualize things on a molecular level
Iโm gonna cry because I went to go see one of my patients and when I walked into the unit one of the nurses goes โoh youโre the intern that always spends a lot of time with the patients, I just was talking about you!โ

๐งต How to Prepare to Apply to Residency Part One: Program Selection ๐งต
Last year, trying to figure out what programs to apply to was overwhelming. So here is a thread on how to sort through programs and also things you can be doing right now to make things easier in the fall.
โฃ๏ธ
why would you send me an unsolicited dick pic when we had plans for Friday night where I was planning to have the bra and underwear match
and now I have to block you!! fumbling the bag with 1st down and 2 to go!!!
I realize we only โknowโ each other on this dumb bird app but I really am closely following your medical careers and rooting for you and feel like weโre friends.....at least a little maybe?
Plastics -> Poodle
Unfairly maligned breed who are actually wickedly smart and agile. Obsessed with appearance but generally sunny disposition. Can be excellent with children. Dignified and elegant.
Urology -> Schnauzer
As high spirited as they are intelligent. Fun loving, strong willed and typically outgoing. While not the most common, they are simply adored by their fan base.

thereโs a post on the medical school subreddit right now with over 2k upvotes about choosing a specialty based off lowest suicide rates.
medical education has got necrotizing fasc of the deep spaces.
Medical students, I truly believe patients receive better care when youโre part of the team.
You devote so much time to speaking with them, examining them, digging through the chart, and thinking about them-you truly add so much. โฃ๏ธ
So after breaking up at 2am I still served up warm strawberry poppy seed rolls at 10am, did a full day of sightseeing and just gave him a ride to the airport so just Saint me already
would any other institution who has dirty laundry to air or a looming PR crisis please come forward before Wednesday and the rank list certification deadline
I remember one time some medical students came to chat with us and like 19 year old me was very ๐ณ at these ~almost doctors~ who were ~total adults~ and ~definitely knew what they were doing~
L O L O L O L
the arms race to get into medical school is accelerating so rapidly that I, a current M4, do not feel sufficiently qualified to advise applicants on upcoming admissions cycles.
can we stop being so ridiculously rude to each other in medicine?
currently on a month of ER and the way that other physicians speak to me is BUCK WILD and a significant contributor to burnout.
Is the pandemic not enough?? Are you not getting enough hostility from patients??
I was feeling bad about going to Urgent Care for the aphthous ulcer from hell but then the doctor looked in my mouth and said โoh shitโ so now I feel validated
