I'm completely and utterly exhausted and it's only halfway through term. Some unanswered emails are almost celebrating birthdays.
And then a student interrupts class prep time (normally 'gaah!') to give me this.
I'm not crying. No... wait... yep, I'm defo bawling.

Friday whisky time! In keeping with fall vibes, today's whisky is the
@Glengoyne
18. It has no hint of peat, as the barley is dried with warm air instead. The distinctive part of this distillery just north of Glasgow is that they are wonderfully slooow (there's a lesson here) 1/n
At the behest of
@alexeble
, I'll get back to scotch tweeting. Today's whisky is to celebrate the start of crisper air. ๐
The Aultmore 18 is one of the smoothest whiskies I've found at this age and price point. The nose is light vanilla and crisp citrus fruit. The palate is 1/n
These trees!!! When I moved to Ithaca one of my best friends in Toronto said "hey, at least we are now under the same sky again!" and seeing these trees in my doggo walk makes this feel true and closer to home ๐ฅฐ
Around this time of year is usually when I spend some time in Scotland. I am sad I don't get to go this year, so I've decided to go through my Scotch in a systematic manner. Normally I'd spend time discussing it with the distillery folk, but that's not today. So here goes:
Celebration whisky time! Submitted the final files for our accepted paper, so Iโm dipping into this guy today: Glenfiddich Winter Storm. 3rd in their experimental series, it is aged 21 years in ex-bourbon casks and then a three-month finish in ice wine casks from my home region!

For rejections I have three go-tos: Bowmore if I'm pissed and need a 'grraaaah' dram, Glengoyne if I need a hug, and Aberlour if it's a 'beh, that sucks, but that's the game'. Send me your bottle shop link and I'd love to make more suggestions! :)
I've been reminded I've been remiss in my whisky posting. Apologies. As it's Thanksgiving wkd (๐จ๐ฆ), let's do a twofer. Today we had two different Islay whiskies finished in Calvados casks:
@Kilchomanwhisky
and
@Bunnahabhain
. Both fabulously beautiful places with amazing whisky.
This was a cask strength week. So today's whisky is my absolute favourite cask strength: the Aberlour A'bunadh. Every batch is different -- the one I'm drinking today is
#63
, bottled at 61%. There are variations across batches, but same process so the profile is sorta similar.
Today's whisky is the Glen Moray Madeira Cask Project. The nose immediately bursts with madeira and there's little guessing what is to come. But then the palate is BANANA BREAD having a party, and this sweet vanilla hugs you to the finish. Beautiful whisky. Thanks
@avanparidon

Two Assistant Professor positions in Economics at SSE this year. All fields. We're a broad (and very friendly) department, Stockholm is a great city and the research network here is excellent.

Day 3 of Whisky Advent calendar is a happy day. It's a distillery I recognize, and actually first tried with

IT'S WHISKY ADVENT CALENDAR TIME! This year we got the single cask calendar from

Happy Canada Day everyone!!๐จ๐ฆโฅ๏ธ I will celebrate by switching to talking about rye instead of scotch for exactly one day (but later).
For now I want to say that I miss home very, very much. Especially these days, I am so thankful that Canada was a welcoming place for my family.

In honour of Canada Day, today's whisky is from my 'local distillery' (almost next door to my mom's house)
@WeAreFortyCreek
. This is the Double Barrel Reserve, a blend of rye, barley and corn whiskies aged in seasoned oak casks and it is all then finished in bourbon barrels.
We had some visitors with happy gifts, so today's whisky is the Craigellachie 17yo, cask
#04
-613. This is an absolutely lovely dram, and a far cry from it's sulphuric (and honestly underwhelming) 23yo brother. The nose is immediately pear and some apple, very cider-like...

1st impressions of Seattle:
1. Empty morning streets: where are the morning runners?! Or is 6am too early? (but it's so pretty!)
2. Everyone waits for the green to cross the street, even with NO cars. It was hard to adhere to the social norm when trying to keep pace (but I did)

@Bruichladdich
bottled in 2019 by
@ElixirDistiller
as part of their The Single Malts of Scotland line (cask
#3841
). At 54.9%, it's on the cusp of where you may want to add a drop of water: I strongly recommend *not* doing so!
Time for Day 1 of Whisky Advent Calendar! First up, the Amhran blended Irish Whiskey from Bonders J.J. Corry. Bonders in Ireland are sort of like bottlers in the UK; they buy the barrels from distilleries and do as they please after that.
Oh lordy it is whisky time. Today I decided to pull out this
@Auchentoshan
we picked up at the distillery a couple of years ago. Auchentoshan is one of the few lowland distilleries, known for being light & citrusy. But they have distillery/bartender casks that change yearly 1/n
This is a gem we found a while back when we stopped at the Green Welly while driving around through the highlands. Half Mortlach (unapologetically speyside) and half Ardbeg (almost the height of peat from Islay). Weird, beautiful, satisfying. Slร inte! (more tomorrow)

Day 21 of the Whisky Advent Calendar is back to a Speyside staple: The Balvenie. This one is the 17yo DoubleWood, a more mature version of the DW 12yo. It is matured first in ex-bourbon, then in ex-sherry casks, so there is a lot of complexity to expect from it. And it delivers!
Living in Ithaca did this to me - I've started naming the many Blue Jays that show up on my porch (I'm convinced I can tell them apart). There's only one Cardinal, though.
Today's whisky is the Longrow Red. Made at Springbank, one of only 3 distilleries left in the Campbeltown region (once a spirit hotspot!). This is normally one of the more peaty expressions from this distillery, though this bottle really lacked that essence. 1/n
Dearest
@SHamiltonian
made me very jealous with his bottle of
@Ardbeg
Hypernova a couple of weeks ago, but today I finally found it! Here are some thoughts, Steve, lemme know if you agree.
Day 17 of Whisky Advent Calendar is back to Scotland with an excellent entry: Glenfarclas 21yo. It is one of the few distilleries there still family owned/managed (6th gen!). The first time I tried their whiskies was on a tasting in Oxford, and I discovered I like most of them.
This morning I finally understood why Ithaca to Philly flights hold 1.5h slots for a 0.5h flight.
We just moved from one de-icing bay to another bc there was "too much snow and ice" on the first one.
On the bright side, California in T+9hrs!
@abhishekn
I have chats set up (usually on WhatsApp) with others who attend the same series, and we use the group as a stand-in for what would usually be the lean-and-whisper comments or questions. Sometimes the thoughts end up in the Zoom chat/Q&A, but either way it keeps us all engaged!

Iโm late to this party, but I have a few thoughts. Nothing earth-shattering, just some lower bounds on what we should all be doing:
