I’m very grateful to the
@AEAjournals
board for this prize. This article was my job market paper, so it is extra special to me. A special thank you goes to
@KiraboJackson
, who was the best editor possible for this paper and made its final version so much better.
Great news that this paper by the fantastic
@BarbaraBiasi
won the AEA's award for Best Paper published AEJ: Policy in the past 3 years!
Important insights into the impact of flexibility in teacher pay schemes on student outcomes.
Want to feel old? Give a talk to undergrad on copyrights, mention Napster, realize from blank faces they have no clue what you're talking about, explain what it was, and have them look at you the way I look at my grandma when she talks about WWII.
Woke up today and
1) It's a dark Monday with pouring rain
2) the NBER newsletter had 36 papers, 1/3 are on Covid-19, one asks if Germany should build a new wall
3) someone suggested using the GRE as a measure of intelligence
I think I'm going back to bed
So happy that my paper “School Finance Equalization Increases Intergenerational Mobility” just got accepted at the Journal of Labor Economics! It's my 2nd-yr paper and 1st paper I ever worked during PhD. Its road was long and w/many obstacles, but in it I have learnt so much.1/8
Next time I hear the advice that people should pick big questions with imperfect identification over less important but better identified ones, I am going to scream. This is not the game this profession is playing.
How do you find the motivation to continue working hard without thinking you’re a total scam and should maybe quit and do something else with your life when you receive your 12th rejection out of 12 submissions? Asking for a friend.
They say your JMP is like your baby, so I think it's quite appropriate that mine is finally seeing the light only 3 weeks after my daughter Serena was born 😃Big kudos to
@AEAjournals
for an extremely efficient process.
Thrilled and grateful to have been awarded an

@ProfSongMa
, we recently released an updated version of our paper “The Education-Innovation Gap” as a NBER wp/CEPR dp. Here’s a short thread if you’re curious about what we do & find! 📜1/10
A gentle reminder to the whole world that there is no need to tell someone who is looking like crap that they look like crap. With very high chances they know; in the unlikely scenario that they don't, knowing will not make them look or feel better. Thank you very much
Today I learnt I’m not going to be able to see my parents for what’s likely to be a very long time. Knowing I’m not allowed to set foot into my home country is a truly horrible feeling. I can’t believe how many ppl have to live with it even when there’s no virus.
Yes but enjoying research not sufficient 4 being happy in PhD. First yr is not about research; relocating in your mid-20, often alone, can be depressing; having little $ doesn’t help. I was miserable most of PhD and am very happy at my R1 job (despite rough start w/publ process)
Professional news kind-of-tweet: I'm very excited to be spending next academic year at
@EIEF_Rome
as a Visiting Assistant Professor. Looking forward to (hopefully) seeing all of you in Europe soon!
Pandemic is not over, exhibit 257: half of daughter's class with Covid. Say goodbye to the next two weeks' plans. Pray she and we won't get sick. Somehow find a way to meet all deadlines between now and Jan. Becoming the standard in any working parent's life

Perhaps the longest-standing debate in education is on whether money matters. Esp. in the case of capital (building /renovating school facilities), conflicting results have led scholars to conclude that “it depends.”
My little family tested negative for Covid yesterday after three long weeks, and I just managed to get my two grandmas a vaccine appointment for early March. Finally some light in this tough tough 2021 💪🏻☺️
I'm so happy for my daughter and all the little girls out there for the great example of a Woman raising to power that they now have. I hope (and believe! 💪) that they'll have many more in the years to come.
How well does a course syllabus keep up with the latest research, and how much does it matter that it does? In a new paper,

is full of anecdotes of women (and not only!) being mistreated or beaten up during talks, advising, grad school, tenure-track, etc. I have my own share. I've always been stubborn & reacted & gone my way and mostly succeeded. I've always been very proud of this. 1/n
I’m officially a member of the

We find that *what* we spend money on matters a lot. Spending on HVAC and removal of dangerous materials (“safety/health”) increases test scores a lot, but not house prices. Spending on athletic facilities, instead, raises house prices but not test scores.
I'm finding it really hard to believe that Europe can get out of this pandemic in the foreseeable future. A series of bad moves, one after the other. Feeling completely hopeless right now.
Very happy that our paper on the Effects of Copyrights on Science finally found a home at AEJ Micro! It was a long & at some points tough journey but working with
@PMoserEcon
is the best.
That feeling when you're playing with a dataset & an idea, plot a figure, and know immediately there's a paper to be written. It almost compensates for all the rejections.
Ran into this while looking for practical tips to balance breastfeeding w/full days at the office.😥 I think I am done reading stuff from
@lalecheleague
It took me a while to realize my thinking was part of the problem. We should not expect everyone in Econ to have the same personality. Personality != talent and this expectation kills diversity. 3/n
The waiting time between AEAs and flyouts can be an extremely stressful time. I feel like it's a good time to remind all JMCs that: a) your performance on the JM does not define you, and often it is not a good measure of your talent as an economist. 1/n
My least favorite thing about teaching is having to use a blackboard. Why have a blackboard when you can have a whiteboard? Why have blackboards survived? Does anyone like them?
The country I have called home for 9 years, where I work, pay taxes, which I a permanent resident and my daughter is a citizen of, won't let my parents or sibling in. No good reason and no end in sight.
@ikuziemko
I can only try to imagine how hard going through this must have been. But thanks so much for sharing. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard “but abortion for medical reasons still legal so what’s the worry” in the past three days
To date, only 61 women have won the
@NobelPrize
compared with 898 men
Yet, Kurt Wüthrich: a successful Nobel Laureate who runs 3 academic labs in 3 continents (🇨🇭🇺🇸🇨🇳) complained that he faced discrimination for being a man in science.
Said while talking in an all-male panel🤦
Wow, thanks SO MUCH to all of you for your kind and wise words below my previous tweet. I have a love/hate relationship with Twitter but reading those words really made my day (not the rejection!). Oh and your many solutions worked - I’m back to work with more 💪🏽💪🏽 than before!

I am presenting at a conference paper A, which I haven’t presented in a while.
I spend days preparing presentation of paper A.
2 days before conference I discover I am actually presenting paper B, which I have presented 20 times the past month.
I think I need a vacation
On a more positive note, today was the last class of my brand new MBA course on Inequality and Social Mobility. I hope my students enjoyed it as much as I did!
@drStuartGilmour
Regardless of whether your claims are correct or not (which they're not) and whether you understand the empirics of the paper (which you don't), your tone towards a fellow faculty is very disrespectful. I hope others read this and take it as an example of how NOT to behave on SM
People, please stop using acronyms such as AER/JPE/APSR/EER/etcetera when listing your publications on your cv or website. It signals a total lack of interest in having people from other disciplines understand you. (also, I can name at least two journals w/EER as acronym)
Academics/teachers on twitter: what are tips for not losing one's voice while teaching? It happens to me every single time (I guess I tend to shout😬). I am 100%clumsy at sipping a hot beverage while teaching without spilling it all over myself. Is there anything else that helps?

My 1st year of PhD was unbearable. I was scared but decided to leave and go figure out whether there was something else I wanted to do more. Knowing that there wasn’t is what kept my motivation high for the rest of the journey after I returned and got me through it w/ a sane mind
I resigned from my PhD today. I feel both sad and proud of myself.
I am sad that I couldn't finish, and proud that I recognized it and spared myself another year or torture.
I first saw this paper presented at NBER SI20 while holding my 1wk old and felt quite depressed. Then I realized that the fact we have this type of research telling us when issues arise and where to act puts me in a much better position than women who came before me. 1/n

Weakening child labor laws is a fast route to a less educated country
The education gains of the 20th C came from child labor restrictions, compulsory schooling, & more schools
Putting kids to work moves us backwards to a poorer, harsher world

Don't let anyone ruin your life over tenure. I had 2 kids at Stanford, plus a disabled mom. Did not get tenure & never regretted it for a second. I only have to look at my kids to see what a ridiculous choice that would have been. My only regret is not spending more time w my Mom

A country where school massacres are so frequent, guns are 1st cause of child death, and a useless lobby continues to have the power NRA has without *any* change ever happening is simply NOT the greatest country in the world. In other countries this stuff simply does not happen.
Are flight attendants prevented from helping passengers store a bag? I am visibly pregnant, boarding 4th flight in 3 days, and it’s the 4th time I get a blank face when I ask for help. Last flight attendant suggested I check my bag (around 10lb)
