Love it when your uni’s email about “redundancies” (in a sector already on its knees) is entitled ‘shaping for excellence’ and implies mass job losses will actually be GOOD for staff & students. Do they expect us to buy into this delusion?
@chelseathepope
My sister (cabin crew) had him on her 1st class flight. He asked if he could have 2 portions of hot nuts instead of one +the accompanying champagne(as “they’d” told him he needed to quit “the drink”)& then ordered loads more, loudly remarking “I fucken love these nuts, Elizabeth”

As I explained to my students today, I don’t have it so bad. But I refuse to walk through a picket of precariously employed junior colleagues who essentially work for less than minimum wage on zero hours contracts to go to my permanent post. That is not solidarity.
@iamlivyrose
I see a lot about the role of new media in radicalising young folks, but far less about how it’s impacting on older generations. IMO they’re more vulnerable, as they’re not as tech savvy as Gen Z or millennials, and the pandemic has isolated a lot of older people

The direction changed rapidly towards the end of the day - my thinking is because all the companies who came across poorly deleted their tweets, and some savvy social media types who work for companies that buck the trend realised tweeting would (rightly) make them look good!
@ohJuliatweets
The first two cats we adopted involved me asking the shelter “who’s been on your books the longest? Who does no one else want?” We got this lovely old bruiser, who had lots of health issues but a heart of gold. I miss him every day. He was my soulpet.

If it makes you feel at all better my grandad went full fb conspiracy theorist after my mama died and posted a lot of awful stuff. We finally got him to see how toxic social media was in his life and he’s come off fb and has gone back to being pretty rational

And as if it wouldn’t be unnerving AF for some random guy to swerve in front of you repeatedly on his bike, trying to talk at you, as you ran across a deserted railway bridge on a dark damp night (however lovely you are PLEASE don’t do this men, it’s intimidating)
For avoidance of doubt I want it on record that if I’m ever abducted off the street, assaulted, and murdered; I want y’all to bring down a motherloving WAR upon our broken white supremacist capitalist heteropatrichal system!
The basic misconceptions around Unions amongst the UK public is wild. Wild.
1) Folks who seem to think you get paid on strike days. YOU DON’T. I repeat: your employer doesn’t pay you if you don’t work. Striking is financially painful to workers, not just some random jolly.

We felt trapped in the room, as he seemed really aggressive. We had plans to go to dinner and/or go out on the terrace and chill together. But we ended up just sat in our room all night with the door locked!

I am a lecturer. I am also 5.5 months pregnant, 38, and asthmatic. Your immunity lowers when you’re pregnant (so body doesn’t attack baby) which means you’re more vulnerable to illness. In “normal” times I frequently get ill during term time 1/?

I get there are many legitimate concerns re: campuses not re-opening but I am SO SO SO tired of this ridiculous BS assumption I keep seeing in comments that if teaching staff aren’t physically on campus they aren’t working. It’s ignorant and offensive and it needs to stop.

Also, what a lot of folks don’t realise about the so called “morning after pill” is at some points in your cycle *it simply doesn’t work*. All morning after pills work by delaying ovulation, so if you have ovulated in the last 24 hours then it won't be effective.

Wtf does the HMRC choose not to robustly challenge rich taxpayers claiming non-dom status in the same manner the DWP responds to cases of welfare support? Obvs I know the answer. The violence we do to poor people in this country is disgusting, as is the way we pander to the rich

My former beloved (neutered) moggie would constantly attempt to dry hump my arm. He would “scruff” my sleeve to hold my arm in place and everything 🤮. He had a blanket (known in our house as “the girlfriend blanket”) he’d use if he had to, but my arm was his one true love 🥴

I always say to my students that the pay is the least of my issues. It’s fine. It’s not great, but it’s fine. The exploitation, the workload, the discrimination, and the blatant lying & dishonesty around both the attack on pensions and salary costs are what sticks in my craw

And yet everyday on twitter I have to read all this crap about how I am a selfish snowflake hysteric for not travelling 1 hour on public transport every day to give my students f2f (instead of the meticulously planned online course I spent all summer designing for them 5/?
My 40th birthday today - a decade my mother never got to see. It’s going to be a lovely day with many of my favourites, but, even 33 years after she died, it’s a day where I often feel suddenly (and inexplicably) hollowed out by grief.
Just a general reiteration of how tired I am of academic books being so inexplicably and pointlessly expensive. HOW?! WHY?!?! In what universe is any monograph, however fabulous, worth £78? So many things I’d like to own & have to hand, it makes me sad. Tired and sad.

Pretty proud of how my new home office turned out! Bit of a glow up from its former ugly garage self. The demands of working from home made DIY-ers out of us…
The fact that the government’s trying to pass legislation to ensure that transphobes can pretty much wander on to a campus & start giving impromptu “talks” at will, but firing someone for challenging research is totally fine & in no way an infringement of academic freedom is 🙄🤬

I’m a napper, and feel similarly maligned. My natural sleep cycle would probably be 12am-6am; then 1pm-3:30pm. When my toddler refuses to nap I’m like “why would you throw away this wonderful opportunity you tiny idiot?!?!”

Teaching courses on sexual violence is hard - trying to do it in a warm & compassionate way knowing so many students will also be survivors; but also inject some levity to make it less unremittingly grim. Holding your anger in check but letting enough out to try & inspire.

Alongside him we got another semi-feral old tom that even the animal loving shelter owner hated 😂. He was a bitey arsehat who rubbed his butt on the floor like a dog (leaving streaks of poo) and had to have a kitty inhaler administered daily against his will. But we loved him.
2) Folks who seem completely unaware that wildcat strikes exist & hurt employers/end users more than legal/regulated strikes. You can’t magic strikes away by hobbling Unions, banning them, or tying them up in bureaucracy. That’s not how life works. That’s not how humans behave.
