I see a lot about the role of new media in radicalising young folks, but far less about how it’s impacting on older generations. IMO they’re more vulnerable, as they’re not as tech savvy as Gen Z or millennials, and the pandemic has isolated a lot of older people
after seeing that video where a crowd of idiots cheers at the idea of doctors and nurses being hanged, and then immediately after see my uncle posting vile antivax conspiracies in Facebook, finally decided I'm done just ignoring his nonsense
@iamlivyrose
If it makes you feel at all better my grandad went full fb conspiracy theorist after my mama died and posted a lot of awful stuff. We finally got him to see how toxic social media was in his life and he’s come off fb and has gone back to being pretty rational

Are you saying gen z or millennials are the only ones that are really tech savvy ? Oh come on do you think only people 30 years and under can use social media and tech properly ?

Again, that’s not what I was saying is it? I’m 39 FGS. Why is everyone so angry on this site? Really have no energy to fight bad faith randos - just going to go back to blocking

I think it’s less about being able to use tech and more about understanding how it works and more importantly, how it can be misused for bad.

True, I had to block my father on Facebook for a while because he was sharing posts from far right groups. The posts were not far right but the groups posting it were. I had to explain to him that anyone seeing his timeline would presume he supported all that groups beliefs.

I was accidentally added to a covid denier local Facebook group. I look at it sometimes. The posts have shifted a bit into climate denial. Something about weather engineering causing the change in weather patterns. This is poison.

Saying that people <40 are more tech savvy than people >40 is not the same as saying that millennials and gen Z skip happily through the daisy fields of the digital without encountering any problems or that online spaces are therefore safe for them. But sure, go off.

We grew up in a world where if something was written down so that ordinary people could read it, there was a general assumption that the someone who wrote it was knowledgeable. Some people have never updated their opinions in a theatre where exactly the opposite applies.
