Is one of Philadelphia's most Famous roads also one of its most problematic? In this Armchair Urbanist lets talk about the Problems with the Ben Franklin Parkway, and why we shouldn't always directly copy European Urban designs.
Thanks to our regulars and newbies for riding with us today!
All the info you need to ride during the DTLA 10 freeway closure is here:
📷 this afternoon’s commute
People have to understand that shit like this happens because Private Railroad companies own and operate basically all of the rail infrastructure in North America and they do not give a shit about maintenance and infrastructure upkeep.
West Coast Cities: NOoOooo that lot size is too small, you can't upzone that!! It'll be terrible for the neighborhood!!!1!
Philadelphia: 6 stories on a 12ft wide plot? Ok.
@Bbburner19
Even if those numbers were even remotely correct. You're forgetting:
-tire manufacturing and micro plastics
-parking and car infrastructure is insanely carbon intensive
-cars promote urban sprawl which makes everything more carbon intensive
-lithium mining and sunken resources
Just saw a man wearing a whole suit. Nice watch, hair, shoes, looked sharp. I would guess he’s an executive or a business owner.
Except he was standing at a bus stop. I realized he’s prob got a job interview. So I stopped and asked him if he wanted a ride.
He said “Nope, my…
Lame People: "We Can't have High Speed Rail in the US because you'd need insanely big infrastructure that's impossible to build across mountains!"
Our Highway system:
Reasons why its expensive:
- Amtrak currently doesn't have enough rolling stock to meet demand
- You are getting 3 course meals, free coffee, snacks and waters the entire trip
- Amtrak has to largely subsidize the long distance routes, sleepers are a bonus
cont...
i looked at taking an Amtrak to a festival in pennsylvania in a few months. all the trips are like 28+ hours long which would be fine if i could take a sleeper roomette. however, it’s nearly $900 each way. $1800 to sleep. insane.
San Francisco Residents are so funny when they try to grasp for straws to fix housing.
This whole section of the city is shitty 2ish story detached stucco housing. Literally build anything more dense here!!
The US Mint in SF takes up so much space and sits near a ton of transit.
It currently produces collectible coins for coin nerds, and doesn’t actually produce coins for circulation.
Maybe this isn’t the best use of space? Should be moved imo and replaced with mixed use housing.
I swear that the democrats have the worst PR team of all time, because the republicans would act like they where gods giving a small gift to the peasants if they ever did something similar.
BREAKING: The Biden administration is ending bank overdraft fees as we know them.
Under a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau rule, overdraft fees at large banks will be strictly regulated and capped as low as $3. Low-income Americans will save billions.
👇🏼Why are we letting gigormous industrial sized shipping trucks drive in our downtown streets ?! These shipping containers have no place in our neighborhoods. 🤷🏻♀️ This is Richmond and Spadina at lunchtime.
The reason why the Class 1 Railroads might electrify in the United States, is because Mexico is forcing them too.
Of course only the stupidest/funniest way that this would happen might happen.
Absolutely hilarious that this "negative" video has actually convinced me that the Gondola is a good idea and that California has some of the most insufferable victim-mentality NIMBYs of all time
A billionaire in L.A. is trying to build an aerial gondola over one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city so he can develop the parking lots at Dodger Stadium into a retail entertainment complex. Not only will one our most historic parks get consumed by the project, but…
What people from outside of NJ/tristate area don't understand, is that we shouldn't be building anything else in the meadowlands.
The meadowlands is there for runoff and flood control, housing (and other buildings) should not be built there.
The fact that the area around MetLife stadium doesn’t look like Wembley park in London is a gigantic policy failure
Wembley is btw how you should do stadium developments
Regarding the Norfolk Southern derailment. To anyone who had any knowledge of the rail industry prior to this whole event, this disaster was basically expected. The US rail industry basically relies on the fact that most Americans are willfully ignorant of their operations.

@shaun_vids
This is easily your dumbest take of all time.
Yeah sure like a republican would do anything different. If anything, they'd bomb Gaza faster.
I keep thinking about how much more powerful the US would have been if we invested in better infrastructure like railroads or cities in the 50s-70s instead of highways and the suburbs.
@ReggBrown25
yeah that will hurt the building overtime and cause water intrusion. But that's also an older style of masonry that will hold up slightly better to the vines
Traffic is the horrible in Los Angeles. Almost feels like half your life your in a car just getting from one place to the next. Can’t wait for the
@boringcompany
to solve this issue.
This building will probably have massive water intrusion problems within 5 years.
I do not understand the comically goofy fascination of putting plants on a building...
Out of all of the infrastructure projects in the world, the electrification of the Indian Railway system does not get enough praise.
This is easily one of the most impressive undertakings in the 21st century and it was done in roughly 10ish years
India’s mainline railway network is almost entirely electrified, with over 90% of the ENTIRE NETWORK (!) electrified, of which 45% was done in the last five years. Here’s a bit of background: 🧵
If trains were first invented today, they would never be built. No rail-less nations are building rail networks. No, China doesn't count because they're the Paragon of poor economic choices.
I've come to the opinion that we should not even tell the public about some projects, we should just build it and then let them figure out eventually. Because literally nothing good comes from doing this. Just people about to die bitching about about their property values
This is honestly a huge deal. A ton of people are going to be exposed to rail travel for the first time just seeing that its even an option.
(Which hopefully drives some people to do more research on the topic)
Alot of people commenting or quote tweeting that they're broke. No! Actually the opposite! They have a whole dedicated chartered train for only the team!
Usually with some special cars too (see my comment below)
A Massachusetts developer submitted a proposal to tear down the IHOP on Soliders Field Road for two residential buildings that will be 100% affordable.
America already has a 500 mph high speed rail system linking the country and it doesn’t even take up any land and bugs way fewer people with noise
ITS CALLED A FREAKING AIRPLANE
NEWS: Detroit has installed the first wireless-charging public roadway in the U.S. It stretches a quarter mile.
i t only activates when a car with a receiver passes over the coils. Testing will begin in 2024 with a Ford E-Transit electric commercial van.
My friend just sent me this photo from where he’s staying in suburban Croatia
Says it's safe, reliable, and beautiful. Even these little scenic trams are a great way to get around.
In America this would be unthinkable.
What is the sickness that has infected our democracy?
Amtrak/Rail Corridors that have been chosen for funding so far:
- The North Carolina S-Line
- NYC to Scranton
- Cleveland to Cincinnati
- Cleveland to Toledo
- Chicago to Pittsburgh
- Brightline West
- Daily Cardinal Service
Hopefully the FRA will announce all later this week
News Flash: NYC’s public transit from airports is a disgrace. Arrive late to JFK? Cough up at least $80 for an Uber or spend your evening waiting on deserted train platforms. NYC, we can do so much better!
Had a really bad experience on the way home from Summer Streets with a driver making an illegal turn on Columbus Ave.
It takes just one moment to wipe out a day of good riding. I stopped in harms way to block this driver from hitting my kids riding behind me.
I love plants as much as the next person and we should be saving them by preventing suburban sprawl and promoting density in cities. Along with this, we should be maintaining our urban buildings so that they need less resources (i.e. no ivy)
Its understated how important it was for the US to have finished the Great Society Metros in the 70s.
These systems are invaluable today and its all because we had a president that had insane enough energy to promote them, enough to put a metro car on the white house lawn
Happy Birthday Metro! In the mid 1960s, President Lyndon B. Johnson gave the push that led to the creation of Metro. By Feb 20, 1967, WMATA was officially born! LBJ even got a sneak peek at our first train car prototype. Now that's what you call presidential approval! 🚇✨
#wmata
Damn that Amtrak expansion plan looking real tasty when air travel is becoming less and less reliable. Weather definitely doesn't affect trains the same way it can hinder aircraft
This just in from a friend stuck in Vegas:
“Flights across the US have been canceled today because of excessive heat warning, including my flight from Las Vegas. After multiple delays and an aborted boarding, the pilot said the air conditioner was not cooling the plane …
>18min long video
>Constantly touting NA small towns bad (shows only Canadian sprawl towns)
>Zero mention of how many pre-WW2 NA towns are fine
I'm not asking for North America praise but I'm just asking for some nuisance
Top US skylines *best opinion*:
1. NYC
2. Chicago
3. Philadelphia
4. Pittsburgh
5. Miami
6. San Francisco
7. Seattle
8. LA
9. Vegas (unfortunately)
10. Cincinnati
I wish I took a video, but my NJT bus got lost and while I directed the driver back onto the route and he thanked me by dropped me off Infront of my parents place off route in front of their house. Funniest way to show up to Easter
The suburbs want all of the benefits with none of the work. A good majority of the homeless people and hard drug users originate from the burbs and are forced into cities because suburbs refuse to built more housing and refuse to build any rehab centers to help these citizens.
Tension between New York City and its surrounding suburbs has grown since the pandemic, as attempts to solve the city’s most pressing problems are putting it in direct conflict with suburban residents and officials who feel that is simply not their job.
@MoistCr1TiKaL
4 companies practically own their own territories and for some reason we can’t hold them accountable despite the billions we have spent building and maintaining the infastructure they now own 🤔
