Pre-car north american suburbs used to allow small-scale businesses. You can often see them when you visit older suburbs. A lot of them have been grandfathered into the new zoning. Here are a couple examples from Ottawa.

To ensure residential streets are safe, Japan takes a different approach than most countries. Instead of segregating modes by their speed (car lane, bike lane, sidewalk), Japan simply makes residential streets very narrow so that cars never feel comfortable going fast.

This lovely midrise building in Amsterdam is illegal to build in all of North America. Placing the staircases outside saves a ton of room. Elevators are shared with just 1 neighbor per floor. When the elevator doors open to your floor, you are greeted with view out on the park

Here's a new apartment building in Italy. This would be illegal to build in almost all of the USA + Canada. Notice how big the units are when there's no massive corridor running through the building and chopping each unit into little studios. Who wouldn't want to live here?
