I wrote, "Hi Jim, John, and Charlie" but,
apparently, I should have written,
"Hi Jim, Hi John, Hi Charlie,"
because we don't want John and Charlie to feel slighted.
Yes, I'm a lawyer.
When I was a summer associate, the firm I worked said you were in good standing if you worked 1800 hours per year (150/hour). You were bonus-eligible at 1950.
An associate I liked took off all of December after hitting 1950 by the end of November.

Once upon a time, I had 4 weeks' vacation.
When I put in for 2 weeks, I was told that I couldn't be gone for so long.
When I put in for 4 1-week trips the following year, I was told I was always on vacation.
Unlimited PTO seems a lot like this experience. Not real time off.

It's been a long time since I took criminal law and never NJ specific, but I thought that once they broke off the violent encounter, it was no longer self-defense.

Although the two guys who take in a stranger during the pandemic are meant to be mocked, they also took in a stranger during the pandemic.
I refer to all my 1Ls as Counselor [last name] in an effort to avoid misgendering someone based on outward appearances.
One of my students told me yesterday that it also helps them build professional identity and elevate their performance.

What's the point of this tweet, Peter? Are you suggesting that Romney's upset about being denied a position in the administration?
Some student loan debt will never be repaid, whether it's cancelled or not.
It costs the US government zero dollars to acknowledge that some debts will never be repaid, but provides psychic benefits to borrowers.
When this debt is cancelled, there is literally no cost.

This book "offers real-life examples of the differences between the negotiating habits of men and women, and guides women in retooling their attitudes and approaches."
Why should women be forced to adopt "male" attitudes and approaches to earn equal pay?
I'm glad to report that my article on Universal Basic Income and Debtor-Creditor issues (e.g. debt collection, garnishment, bankruptcy) is forthcoming in the American Bankruptcy Law Journal.
They emailed me to ask if I'd submit something. I did. They accepted it. Done.

The paid leave provision seems particularly pertinent to this crisis, where hourly workers are being forced to choose between $$ for food on the table and risking their health in ways that I, for example, am not.

I’m pleased to report that my new article on the bankruptcy issues with the OCC’s fintech charter is forthcoming in the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Business Law.
It currently has the ridiculous title: Who’s Down with OCC(‘s definition of “banks”)?
we got a grant. Yay!

My judged recused himself from a bankruptcy case because he had a trip booked on the airline that was in bankruptcy and didn't want to be perceived as encouraging this multi-billion dollar business to reorganize so he could still use his ticket.

how about married men are more likely to have a spouse take care of domestic obligations than single men or women? This frees them to work more.
Yesterday, in 1L Contracts, we were discussing Buffaloe v. Hart in which a person gave a check to someone selling tobacco barns, allegedly as payment for those barns.
One student said that they have never *seen* a check.
Y'all making me feel old!
It finally happened. I got asked to provide comments on an article for a law journal that is never going to publish one of my own articles.
I have arrived!

I don't think that a camera that writes ticket after ticket after ticket is necessarily broken,
@charlesallen
.
What if everyone who passes by these cameras is speeding or not stopping completely? Speeding and not stopping are the default IMO.
Providing feedback is every professor's job.
This week, I'm providing it on an upgraded contracts midterm. After giving individualized comments, I'll spend 75min in class giving general feedback to everyone. Students regularly say this class is one of the best in the fall term.
reporting nominal figures about the "cost" of Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) seems SO misleading. Some (maybe even a lot) of this debt is effectively uncollectible.
There is no cost to the government to forgiving uncollectible debt. It's just an accounting issue.
12 of 15 students who received the highest grades on my midterm asked to review their exam, including all of the top 9.
Only 3 of the 12 receiving the lowest grades have asked for their exam to review it.
Ideas on how to help the students who don't seek help from you?

When I was at a law firm, I "had" four weeks vacation. When I took my first two-week trip, I was told that it was hard when I was gone for so long. So I started scheduling 1 week trips. Then I was told that it was hard that I was always on vacation.

On my bike ride today, I got two flat tires (hit a pothole). But I only carry one spare tube.
So, thank you to the generous cyclist riding by that gave me a spare tube so I could make it home.
And thanks to the driver who stopped to make sure I was ok.

While I didn't feel rich before I went, being there surely made me feel rich.
Taking ride share from the airport used to be ~$7. Was $35 last night plus a 15 min wait. Grabbed a taxi instead. Regulated, waiting for me already, and $28.

It's nice when hour requirements are clearly expressed. Too often, it seems to me that they're intentionally vague to leave folks wondering if they should do more.

my wife's an assistant principal at an elementary school and turns down gift cards from families at the holidays out of concern that it raises an appearance of impropriety...
Don't know how anyone would think that all this money wouldn't raise a stink...
I've taken on my first criminal defense case pro bono and WTF!?
Everything about this system seems so shady. It appears that we prefer to incarcerate people above all other options.

Some legal issues require you to think outside of the box. Who is better positioned to do that than someone who works in theatre, which already has an imaginary fourth wall!?
My parents are going on a vacation, which means that my mother is letting me know where all their important financial paperwork is, reminding me of her last wishes, etc. Just in case their plane crashes or something.
Do your parents do this too?
