We’re the District’s legislature, responsible for crafting laws. On Twitter, our goal is to engage with residents in an informative and conversational way.
Because we are not a state:
DC was shorted $750 million in COVID aid
DC had to get extra vaccine from MD & VA when we were given too few doses for our health workers
DC couldn’t deploy our own National Guard to restore order outside a House we can’t yet call home
#DCStatehood
To be clear,
#DCStatehood
is no one’s “nuclear option”
We are no one’s final straw
We are not an instrument of anyone’s retribution
We are 700,000 Americans who pay taxes, fight & die in wars, & have been denied Congressional representation for 200+ years
We deserve to be a state
“Washington” is home to monuments & federal buildings
The District is home to 700K of the best, most energized, active, intelligent, caring, & badass Americans you’ll ever meet
We’re no one’s backdrop. We’re no one’s “battlespace”
We have no vote in Congress
#DCStatehood
now!
In response to a bunch of posts on social media asking why we (DC) issued permits for today’s protests: WE DIDN’T!
Freedom Plaza, the Ellipse, etc. are federal property, and permits are issued by the National Park Service.
When DC becomes the 51st State, we will be the second *largest* state by population (at time of admission) in American history.
So, haters: Quit the “too small to be a state” shaming—we’re large and in charge!

According to this “change of address” postcard we received, the White House has announced its new mailing address will be 1600 Alabama Avenue, SE
#Sharpie
The President of the United States altered a National Hurricane Center map with a sharpie to falsely extend the official forecast toward Alabama so he didn't have to admit he was wrong in a tweet.
Today is the 61st time this year that it's been over 90 degrees in DC.
That's 60 more than we want or need.
Our support for "hot and over 90" starts and ends with Ms. Betty White.
1) Actually, it was 95.91% of DC that voted for candidates other than the President
2) But that's irrelevant. Opposition to a $92 million tax-funded parade is nonpartisan. We'd have opposed a $92 million parade led by the Obamas & Chuck Brown, with statehood floats made of hemp
The

Due to its strategic location at the end of a Metro line, and the fact that (unlike us) they are represented in Congress, we have begun to investigate the possibility of purchasing Greenbelt
Trump has asked advisers whether the U.S. can acquire Greenland, listened with interest when they discuss its resources and geopolitical importance, and, according to two people familiar with the deliberations, has asked his White House counsel to look into the idea
Please be advised: Half the Wilson Building is currently experiencing a power outage. Fortunately, since DC has no vote in Congress, we're used to feeling powerless, so even having half-power seems like an improvement.
Breaking News: Astronomers have found a potential sign of life in the clouds of Venus, a planet long overlooked in the search for extraterrestrial life.

back to DC for the 1st time since 1933, but also since 1948. The Homestead Grays-playing most home games in DC-won the Negro League World Series in 1943, 1944, & 1948. Key to many Grays victories-Hall of Famer Josh Gibson!
Glad I found this tasty $3.59 bacon, egg, and cheese close to home when I did, or else the Acela fare up to NYC would have really eaten into my planned breakfast budget

Dear America,
If there are any adult Americans (let alone 700+K) who have no voting representation in Congress, you are doing it wrong.
Sincerely,

Shutdown Update: In the event of a shutdown, the offices of DC's 1 voting Representative & 2 voting Senators will be closed...as they have been for 217 years. And if a shutdown is averted, the 681,170 residents of the District will have zero votes on any Congressional compromise.
Fifty-four years ago today, the Supreme Court legalized interracial marriage nationwide. Mildred & Richard Loving got married right here in DC.

Happy 112th Birthday to DC's Virginia McLaurin. She was 9 when the Spanish flu epidemic hit, & 106 when she danced with the Obamas. We honored her in the Chamber in 2016 with this text: You prove being phenomenal never gets old!

We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Mayor Bowser’s sister, Mercia, to COVID.
We send the deepest condolences to the mayor & her family at this most difficult of times. We will hold them all in our thoughts.
Dr. Fauci was socially distancing from the pitcher’s mound.
His pitch was socially distancing from home plate.
He’s just adhering to DC public health regulations.

Effective today, DC’s minimum wage is now $15.
It has increased $0.75 to $1 a year on this date, every year, since 2016.
Moving forward, increases will occur each year on July 1, & be tied to the Consumer Price Index.
Please make this tweet go viral...so the population of the District doesn’t have to.
The Senate must act NOW to change their

bill so DC is considered as a *state*
If they DON’T make the change, DC will get $400-500 million. If they DO, we’ll get $1.25 BILLION.

immediately or we will soon bring forth from the earth a multitude of giant, wailing, ungainly insects to fly through the air, swarm on your sidewalks, and get stuck in your hair!
Heed our warning!
This is a true loss to our community.
Well-informed residents are essential to democracy, and good government is harder to accomplish without rigorous public examination and discussion of what we do. The absence of

The United States is a "state-hole" country: its territory is divided into states, except for its national capital, which is inhabited by 681,170 voteless Americans who have no representation in the national legislature. There is a "state-hole" in this cornerstone of democracy.
I support D.C. Statehood and home-rule – but I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the Mayor’s objections – such as lowering penalties for carjackings.
If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did – I’ll sign it.

BREAKING: On Election Day 2018, the US Capitol has more rainbows than it does voting members of the House or Senate representing the 700,000 people of the District of Columbia.
Lit up green tonight—the Wilson Building: DC’s city hall, county seat, & statehouse—in honor of the US re-entry into the Paris Climate Agreement becoming official.
We ask the world to please excuse our brief lapse in participation.
We assure you...we’ll always have Paris.
We couldn’t be more proud to see DC’s

I assume this is simply a mapping error, but if not, the tip of this runway at National Airport will make for an excellent jumping-off point whenever we decide to take back Arlington and Alexandria
On this date in 1939, DC’s own Marvin Gaye was born at Freedmen’s/Howard U. Hospital. He lived in the Fairfax Apartments in SW & the East Capitol Dwellings. He attended school at Syphax, Randall, Spingarn, & Cardozo High. His musical legacy in DC & the US will not be forgotten!

Say what?!? One thing & one thing alone separates DC from “real America”: our lack of Congressional representation.

As the President & First Lady test positive for COVID, our hearts go out to all 15,358 DC residents who have tested positive for COVID, and most especially to the friends & family of the 628 DC residents that have lost their lives to the pandemic. Wear a mask. Socially distance.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, the other 99.99 percent of us in the District are just trying to live our damn lives and wondering how we can be Americans and still have no vote in Congress

Politicians, diplomats and the media elite are returning to their playgrounds in Washington, D.C., emerging from the depths of the pandemic and returning to their playground — some would say swamp — with a growing appetite for surreal displays of normalcy.

Under DC law, Mr. Dubey’s landlord cannot initiate eviction proceedings against him during the public health emergency. Furthermore, if the landlord negotiated mortgage relief with his lender, he is required to pass it on to Mr. Dubey, & must agree to a rent payment plan with him
IRONY:
Dear America,
Today would be US Tax Day if it weren’t DC’s Emancipation Day holiday, commemorating the freeing of DC’s slaves in 1862. So, Americans can delay paying taxes by one day in the name of a freedom-holiday celebrated by a people who are taxed but not represented.
Today is Earth Day. Let's use EARTH in a sentence: DC is the only democratic capital on EARTH with no voting rights in its national legislature. And yes, we’re Green with envy.
