If you'd like to read me more regularly on politics and my other interests, there's good news! I'll be starting up my long promised paid newsletter late next week and you can subscribe here.
Standing up for something, getting attacked for it and having your prospects threatened, but holding fast and sticking to it instead of running in tears to some magazine or podcast that'll pat you on the head and say "oh, you poor thing." Courage. Resolve. Imagine that.
I think it's probably true that some drinks should be relabeled to make it clearer that they contain alcohol. Ideally, they should be as obvious as this can.
My most buzzkill opinion is that we should have very strict packaging and labling regulations for anything alcoholic or with cannabis in it. Caffeine should be better labeled too
The Bush vid was calibrated to neurologically damage every leftist over the age of 25. No other way to explain it. They're trying to Havana you. Get an MRI.
Pretty wild to see people imply there's going to be a "next time" for climate legislation. I mean, sure, you can technically pass a climate bill whenever. 2100, even. But I think the nature of the problem has eluded you.
Bill Ackman is worth $4 billion dollars. He should be eating grilled baby panda on an island somewhere, unbothered. Instead he accidentally humiliates his wife because he's too online. This is still a powerful website.
If you ever wondered how many people would have to die in a novel event to fundamentally reshape contemporary American politics, it turns out the answer is "a lot more than 89,000."
The question isn't whether climate change is happening. It's whether you have any solutions that aren't crazy. And you screaming that it's happening over and over isn't a solution. It's just posturing nonsense meant to agitate idiots in your base.
It is true that we have many people today with negative net worth who are drinking lead and have to work multiple jobs for basic shelter, but have you considered that John D. Rockefeller did not have a microwave?
It might not be politically correct to say, but I think it's time we started asking whether the contemporary right is capable of assimilating into American culture.
There are lots of reasons why Sanders is behind now but, "people were too mean to a subset of college-educated progressives, the protagonists of the Democratic primary, on this website" isn't one of them and the narcissism of this entire genre of commentary remains stunning.
@repmarkpocan
1/2 You don’t really believe the peeing in bottles thing, do you? If that were true, nobody would work for us. The truth is that we have over a million incredible employees around the world who are proud of what they do, and have great wages and health care from day one.
A century from now one of the least defensible aspects of this era we take entirely for granted will be that politicians pushed the idea that Trump happened because not enough people voted -- that it was the people who failed the system and not the system failing the people.
A million takes on "defund the police" and nobody noticed or thought it was worthy of comment that it was initially "abolish the police" before changing swiftly and imperceptibly in mainstream discourse at some point during the summer.
American conservatism is like one of those dog breeds that can't even breathe properly anymore. Generations of nonsense and insularity. Malformed, wheezing, ugly.
Charlie Kirk: "I'm going through my refrigerator and I'm starting to ask the question: Was this ketchup bottle woke? Is this mustard? I mean, literally."
It seems pretty unambiguous to me that we're in the middle of a coup attempt. It also seems pretty unlikely to work. It's a bad situation in any case, and we ought to focus on the most critical thing we could be doing in response: posting and trying to own people on this website.
Here's a reminder that Bernie Sanders has proposed putting 20% of every publicly traded company under worker control and that it's never come up in a debate.
The reason why young progressives do not like Pete Buttigieg is that he very suddenly and aggressively began attacking progressive policy positions. Thanks for coming to my talk.
Trump offhandedly saying coronavirus is good for the American economy because people won't leave and spend money in other countries is a great reminder that the press has never really been sufficiently invested in finding out just how stupid he actually is.
No doubt about it, weed legalization has been a disaster. Never again will New Yorkers experience the delicate floral notes — lavender, magnolia, lily of the valley — of the city's legendary and exquisite symphony of aromas.
Walked through Times Square for the first time in three years, my eyes are burning, everything smells vaguely like a skunk sprayed it, and I’m wondering if legalization might have been a mistake…
Sen. Chuck Schumer tells reporters at his on-cam presser that Democrats’ position is $1.6 billion for wall funding - far less than the $5 billion Trump wants - but he won’t say if Democrats are shutting the door on anything more, saying he’s not going to negotiate in public.
It is actually very funny that Biden spent the debate barking at Sanders about how we need leadership RIGHT NOW, won Tuesday, and immediately peaced out
Weirdest thing about this week is how the likely Democratic nominee has basically vanished and how the Democrats have basically ceded the fight for public opinion to the GOP.
No one criticizing the Green New Deal -- not a single person -- has an alternative plan for transitioning the American energy economy in the timeframe climatologists say we must. Nobody. If you don't think it's realistic, put out something else. What should be done instead?
What if we took away the most convenient parts of shopping online, got rid of the distinct advantages of shopping in person, and combined the result in a glitchy, grey virtual world it will cost people hundreds of dollars to access?
@RealSaavedra
Eh. A little sloppy, Ryan, I have to say. It would've taken you just a minute or two to scrub these tweets. Just to keep things tidy, you know. For the finesse.
The Democratic Party is less a political party in pursuit of particular policy goals than a professional association organized to defend and advance the careers of its most valued members.
There's never going to be a meaningful amount of space colonization and the human race is going to die out right here at home. I mean, how long are we supposed to put up with this charade?
This isn't "unchecked capitalism." There are a lot of checks. There could always be more. But unchecked capitalism was when you had twelve year olds getting their limbs torn off in factories. This is checked capitalism. And it isn't going very well.
Comedians did not sign up to be your hero. It’s our job to be irreverent and dangerous, to question authority and take you through a spooky mental haunted house so you can arrive at your own conclusions. Stay focused on the people we pay taxes to to be moral leaders.
Republicans have blood on their hands. Gun culture and the NRA are bad. But the primary obstacles to passing gun control legislation in America today are two members of the Democratic Party and a media that valorizes bipartisan governance when it's not mourning these shootings.
Chomsky: Think about East Timor. By the time Suharto.... [cough]....By the time....[cough].... This is quite hot.
Sean Evans: This one does kick it up a notch.
Chomsky: Anyway...[cough]....and this is all well-documented....[cough]...
Sean Evans: Careful around the eyes.
As president, I'll turn the East Room into an open office plan, where I’ll sit with our team.
I’ll use the Oval Office for some official functions – never for tweeting – but the rest of the time, I’ll be where a leader should be: with the team.
Interesting and maybe important to remember that editors and producers hated social progressives so much in the 90s that they turned an obscure psychoanalyst who repeatedly defended pedophilia and child pornography into a major public intellectual and semi-celebrity.
Every single person in this corner of the Internet - the stock photo aesthetes, the keyboard centurions, the evo-masculinity mumbojumbonauts - has a worldview molded entirely by Hollywood and a set of the people they claim to despise.
I love this photo because it invokes primal reactions in people. They are the couple everyone wishes they were in high school
They represent the summun of popularity and success
Those who fall short this ideal cannot help but feel the sting of envy
A mirror into your soul
There's no actual debate to be had about eliminating the Electoral College. This is like climate. There's nothing left to talk about. Just make it happen.
Every museum with modern art on display should have a little corner with canvases and paint where you can take turns trying to freely recreate any given painting in the collection. Have at it. As much time as you need until close.
The makers of the Instant Pot filed for bankruptcy earlier this week, even though their most famous product is still beloved by many users. Those two things aren't unrelated, writes
@amandamull
. The Instant Pot's popularity helped seal its fate.
I've said this before, but one of the unspoken premises of a lot of our sociocultural discourses is that being considered cool and interesting is something like a basic human right.
Hot Take: Impeaching a president who has done crimes in office and who also happens to be a liar, a racist, comically incompetent, and a serial sexual assailant is extremely worth it, actually!
And don't forget to catch FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, Hawaii Five-0, Criminal Minds, Magnum P.I., Blue Bloods, and S.W.A.T. — all part of the CBS Crimetime Primetime lineup! Check local listings.
Mike Bloomberg's campaign is sounding the alarm that Bernie Sanders will soon amass an unsurmountable delegate lead if the Democratic field stays split — and took the extraordinary step of suggesting laggards should drop out.
NBC News: At least 5 men have been charged in a federal case in Michigan tied to a plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
The men are identified in court documents as Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris, and Brandon Caserta.
Don't really expect serious engagement with this, but the BLM "wokes" circa 2015 who were supposedly never going to win over ordinary folks have very clearly won over a lot of ordinary folks and it would probably behoove their critics to try at least a little introspection.
I'm an American by birth. You're not. That said, I support an immigration policy that would make it easier for you to finally seek gainful employment in the United States.
Eh. That time when both parties and almost the entirety of the political press united to speed us into a war that killed hundreds of thousands of people while people who disagreed were denounced as traitors was pretty bad.
The shift in elite concern from panic about hookup culture and sexual content in media to panic about young people not having enough sex has been incredible to witness in real time.
I really cannot imagine living through the Obama presidency and coming away believing that the Democrats' problem is that they aren't civil and empathetic enough towards the right.
Those of us who write give ourselves a lot of grief every now and then about how difficult it is to produce work that feels adequate to the moment, but I think a lot of what's going on may be literally too stupid for words.
This is deeply silly. Asking someone why life-saving coronavirus treatment should be free and not life-saving cancer treatment shouldn't isn't an untoward attack in any sense and everybody knows it.
.
@SpeakerPelosi
speaking at presser with CBC: Thank you George Floyd for sacrificing your life for justice...Because of you and because of thousands, millions of people around the world who came out for justice, your name will always be synonymous for justice.
Just days ago, a Republican congressman went to Auschwitz, met with a far-right group, and said that he wanted a second opinion from non-Jews about how bad the Nazis were.
Why? Why would you bring in a for-profit company just to make accessing the IRS more complicated? Why force people to give them sensitive information? Who are they? What kind of country are we running here?
The IRS says by mid-2022, the only way to log in to will be through , an ID verification service where applicants have to submit copies of bills/ID documents, as well as live selfies via a webcam or mobile.
My hot take on this is that Donald Trump is an extraordinarily bad person who is hurting a lot of people and committing crimes and that he should not be allowed even a single good PR day if at all possible.
@ComfortablySmug
It really amazing how many Libs can't even permit Trump to have *one good day* (nobody will remember this stuff by Tuesday) after US forces kill perhaps the world's most wanted terrorist.
“The Royal Navy is ending its century-old tradition of having Chinese servants on warships amid fears that they could be forced to spy for Beijing. Hundreds of Chinese laundrymen have worked on Britain’s warships since the 1930”
"Replacement theory" would be less of a problem if it did not offer a compelling explanation of why Democrats are trying to open the southern border to as many migrants as possible and offer them a "path to citizenship" and voting. Note: no one ever provides a better explanation.
Again: An entire block of moderate House Dems ran explicitly on replacing Pelosi last year. But Public Enemy
#1
is the chief of staff for a progressive that defended and voted for her.
Congrats to the admissions forum posters. Those with helicopter parents, the SAT score maxxers. This ruling is for you. Merit gets you into the Ivies now. If you don't, you are simply too dumb and too boring. The main obstacle has been removed. Lots of luck in your senior year.
One of the big contrarian arguments people used to make on here was that deplatforming people reliably makes them stronger somehow. Lots of examples now demonstrating that this isn't true, but I've never seen anyone who said it reevaluate their position.
Its funny that tucker carlson moved his TV show to twitter and I've literally never seen him since. Back when he was on TV I kept seeing clips of him against my will on here and you couldn't avoid him but he's just gone now
