I am so sick of the mental energy of always having to think about protecting myself from COVID. Always assessing risks, always having to be the one person in the room wearing a mask, or having to explain why I am doing or not doing things.
I think many people don't realise how quickly illness can set off a cascade of often irreversible events. If I catch COVID, there is a 1 in 10 chance of long COVID. If that affects me badly enough, I lose my ability to work. Without work, I lose the roof over my head. (1/2)
I just interviewed at a different hospital to the one I'm at currently, and they said that if i get the position, they'd encourage me to take 2 weeks leave in between jobs to rest and reset and I NEARLY FELL OFF MY CHAIR. What is this kindness?
Are you a healthcare worker looking after patients? Protect yourself and your patients by wearing a mask. It's not difficult and it's not rocket science
Watching a cancer pt and their partner diligently hand sanitise outside the lifts .... With no facemasks. This is what happens when you take away mask mandates. People think they are safe with no masks despite the fact that COVID never stopped being airborne.
Biggish COVID outbreak in the open-air offices at work (cancer hosp) so exec have asked for n95 masks JUST FOR THIS WEEK..
Why are they always so reactive rather than proactive? 🤯
Just a reminder that SARS-COV-2 hasn't stopped being airborne,and that the only way to avoid multi-organ system long COVID is to avoid catching SARS-COV-2 in the first place
Family in town from overseas so doing way more socialising than I am comfortable with. Still, we've managed every meal outdoors so far, and then I wear a mask indoors and also carry my aranet everywhere. 39C here today so unfortunately we'll be indoors as much as possible.
So yes, I'll continue to make risk assessments based on this, thanks. I have no family who live in Aus. I am not a citizen. Who will pay my rent? (Hint: no one). I'd likely have to give up on the life I've had here for 14 yrs & move back to live with elderly parents. (2/2)
Isn't it just great how colleagues can take zero COVID safety precautions outside of work, come to work and sit in an open plan office without a mask, and then belatedly realise they've got COVID? I love that for me. (/s).
@VirginiaBuysse
Like the time I booked outdoor seating a restaurant and they told me they couldn't facilitate it because they had too many waitstaff off sick ...and so everyone had to be seated inside.
While work, a hospital, drops mask requirements so everyone's just walking around, pretending there's no COVID, and friends who used to care about it catching COVID no longer care. Why is it so abnormal to want to avoid catching a virus that WE KNOW causes organ damage?
And why am I, the person who wears an N95 for 90% of my work day, at risk from everyone else in my office who never wears masks and flies overseas and parties and eats out in restaurants and ignores the pandemic.
Gosh it's interesting to see the 'wow everyone in Melbourne has COVID at the moment" posts. Yes. We are still in a pandemic and if you keep thinking you can live life like it's 2019, these are the consequences. It really isn't rocket science. 🤷
@emmaandollie
I am the only person in my hospital-based office still wearing an n95. My fellow nursing colleagues call me a hermit 🤷♀️ yet bar one other person, they've all caught COVID and I havent. We also look after cancer pts so why wouldn't I be as safe as possible?
Work is a shit show, the volume of work required is about double what we are staffed for. Everyone is burned out and exhausted. But hey at least my mask matches my dress.
@nursekelsey
I feel ya. Sitting in my open plan office with my colleagues (cancer research nurses) and I am the only one with a mask. I just ...... it's so frustrating.
@DrMLivingston
My cancer hospital workplace has downgraded mask policies but has signs everywhereabout handwashing being the best defense against covid and the flu. 😖
@bhakthi
So went as my friend's plus one to a wedding. I had never met either of the brides. Park wedding. I wore a brightly coloured jumpsuit ... and when bride

emerged, realised we were wearing the same outfit.
@9NewsSyd
@RuthWW
This is what happens you tell people month after month after month that lockdowns were bad, that COVID is over, that masks restrict freedom, and we need to "get back to the office". Actions --> consequences.
Got a $20 covid PCR referral via instant scripts. Went to my closest Melb Path that does PCRs. The nurse who did my PCR said people turn up without referrals, realise it then costs $110, and then leave without getting tested. This is for a communicable disease. 😱😱
Got great news yesterday - pre purchase inspection of my new apartment is NEXT WEEK. I have done this alone with no Bank of Mum and Dad and no partner. Can't wait to finally move in (likely June). It has been such a long road.
@Bension1
prospective renters having to provide a massive amount of data but us not even knowing the landlord is SPOT ON and so unfair. And heaven forbid once renting we ask for any sort of maintenance, lest we get kicked out. Property managers drunk on power
@GayleMcNaught
I am appalled. That is an awful unsafe ratio. My old haem ward night shift had 1:6 ratio. 1:14 is unthinkable. Unsafe for pts, unsafe for nurses.
@VicGovDH
@VictorianCHO
Maybe allow more than vaccine a year? Or explain how airbornne transmission works and how n95 masks help? Or bring back masks in hospitals? Or provide easy-to-access PCR testing? Or record positive RATs? I.e. DO YOUR JOB? 🤷♀️
Not bringing in Covid safety measures of any kind because of the 'ecocomy' is so short-sighted. If clean air indoors were prioritised I would: join the gym, eat in restaurants and go to the movies. All things that support the economy
😢
My word.
This video of Melissa's Long Covid worsening over the course of a year is harrowing.
💔
If you can develop this from a covid infection in 2022, you can develop this from a covid infection now.
Don't look away.
Don't catch Covid.
Don't spread Covid.
😢
Shared Hayley Gleeson's great ABC article with a very smart friend. She had NO IDEA about the difference between surgical and n95 masks or how n95s use electrostatic charge to repel particles. Imagine if our health depts ran effective education campaigns?
I know I'm a party-pooper but all I think about when I see any mention of the upcoming Taylor Swift concerts is COVID COVID COVID. No-one with a ticket is going to NOT go even if they're sick.
@Milliganreports
I often wonder about how we can combine training builders, plumbers, electricians etc via TAFE in a way where all their practical learning is done fixing up and building social housing. It would be a win-win situation.
Absolutely wild that the only way to get a COVID PCR test now is to either pay $20 online via Instant Scripts or pay for a GP consult. Isn't it better for everyone if people know if they're got COVID?
Thinking of my fellow nursing, medical, pathology and essential services colleagues working at the hospital over these next dew days. THANK YOU. I see you, I appreciate you.
@bigshimpin
I've started talking about it in a way that references me: if I get long COVID and can't work, who is going to pay my rent? Who is going to be my carer? Will it be you? I can't afford to get sick".
Hello fellow healthcare workers! Nurses, doctors, allied health friends. If patients are avoiding seeking healthcare because facilities and/or staff are not safe, please ask yourself: Are you providing best care? (1/3)
@Globalbiosec
@Prof_NickTalley
I wanted to attend the recent Lymphoma Australia nursing conference but gave up. Zero opportunity to attend online. Bad for the climate, bad for COVID, bad for inclusion
I am profoundly moved by the ‘you will not silence our pain’ billboard outside Knox. It feels like generations of abused, assaulted, trivialised & belittled girls are coming out of the woods wrapped in cloaks and hoods, carrying iron bars & candles
@emmaandollie
Well: my plan is to do almost nothing. Might cook something yummy, do a puzzle, go for a walk along the creek, sing to the cat. Can't wait.
@BrittHiggins_
@lindareynoldswa
We support you. I am so sorry that this abuse just continues. At what point can she be cautioned/fined for wasting the legal system's time and resources?
@PaulMeekPerth
Low on time and energy. I used to volunteer every Saturday and now I spend my weekends recovering from work and resting.and safeguarding my mental health.
@mhdksafa
@PVAenglish
Thoughts and prayers mean nothing. Ban guns. Look at Scotland and Australia. Assualt weapons banned after mass shootings and none since. This will continue in America until the laws change.
Omg I am at a friends birthday drinks and a friend has turned up with her newborn and the bar have ASKED HER TO LEAVE as their policy is no under 18s? We are in the courtyard having a quiet drink. WTF.
3 staff out of 9 put with COVID. Whole hospital understaffed and no bank or agency staff. I just dropped biscuit crumbs on the floor and then ate them anyway.
#LivingWithCOVID
is awful
@TheCatluminati
This is Dottie. She is very independent and will enforce her boundaries with a firm bite. And if she happens to LOOK like she is snuggling, she isn't! She is just opportunistically using your body warmth. She is a rescue and I ❤ her with my whole heart.
@adamliaw
Adam, getting COVID once doesnt stop you from getting another variant. And there will be more variants. My young fit previously heathy friends with terrible long COVID would also strongly disagree with your tweet.
Selling stuff online (downsizing) and a dude is coming to pay and collect. My neighbour is on standby to come loiter outside while he is here. This is what women have to think about all the time. Better safe than sorry, right?
One yesr ago I was moving house after ending a 4 yr relationship. Now I'm living my best life: drinking a sour beer, listening to ABC podcasts and sewing a new top out of a doona cover, while the cat watches me from the couch. SO MUCH HAPPY.
@DrKate_Miller
I am so petrified of catching COVID. I live (happily) alone but the thought of feeling very unwell at home myself is just so anxiety-inducinf, not at all helped by knowing a smidge about all the things that can happen.
Would a registrar who has just completed their 3 month rotation with our unit appreciate a formal letter of appreciation from a team of specialist nurses? Would that be helpful for their CV/portfolio? (Already organised gift and card).
I've got my favourite soup simmering on the stove: black bean soup with kale + rice. When I lived in Alice and all my cookbooks were in Sydney in storage, I wrote to the author asking for the recipe since I loved it so much, and she replied and sent it to me! ❤️ Cheap and tasty
"Our governments and mainstream media have persuaded Australians to accept increasing morbidity, mortality, and the erosion of our public health systems ..."
Dr. Blair Williams on COVID hegemony:
Pt starts cancer treatment tomorrow. Husband has COVID symps. Gave him n95s, RATs, asked him to isolate if possible. So hard to get a PCR. He is fully vaxxed. Ah! Well done, I said, and how many vaccinations have you had? His answer? Two. We have failed people.
@BlairWilliams26
Also most people don't understand what airborne means, and we've done such a good job at assuring pple that COVID is just like the flu. And many people haven't seen serious long COVID up close,or don't know anyone who died due to COVID.
@mosaicthinking
@DrRichardSallie
Has this asthma therefore can't wear a mask thing been proven? Surely its only relevant/true if the mask acts like an allergen itself and triggers their asthma?
