In 2019,
@EdwardJDavey
said we have more than enough gas. He said the success of our renewables industry meant we no longer need shale gas. He said he was proud that he deliberately sabotaged the sector with restrictive enviro regs. Thank him when you get your energy bills in Oct
"I'm very proud that you're looking at the person who basically stopped the fracking industry in this country."
Former climate change secretary Sir Ed Davey and fellow Lib Dem leadership hopeful Jo Swinson say they would ban fracking.
Douglas is right to call out
@SuellaBraverman
. I'm no longer interested in tough talk. I want to see action. Deport this man. And whilst she is at it, ban and deport people & orgs with links to Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood, the IRGC and Hizb ut-Tahrir, amongst others. Enough.
A classic tweet of its time. It sums up everything that is wrong with our media class. Rather than focusing on the substance of today’s events some pundits would rather look at this Brexit saga through the prism of identity politics. What has their gender to do with it?
A trio of extraordinary women have today changed the course of British politics in a fundamental way: Gina Miller, Joanna Cherry and Lady Hale. Wherever you stand on Brexit or Johnson, you’ve got to be impressed
Germany is a step closer to gas rationing as German Economy Minister Robert Habeck triggers the “alarm” stage of a gas-emergency plan following steep cuts in supplies from Russia

Another brilliant piece by
@CitySamuel
- the best analysis of what’s gone wrong. Today’s crisis is a warning to us all. Westminster and the media need to wake up about net zero - otherwise it is game over for the West.
@AndrewOrlowski
The reaction has been extraordinary. They - industry and their outriders in Westminster - spent the last year telling us how competitive the sector is relative to gas. If it is x9 cheaper it doesn’t need lavish subsidies.

JK Rowling is right, why isn't there more outrage from the public on this? Why should British Jews have to hide their identity? British multiculturalism is clearly failing if it cannot allow kids to go to school without being attacked by racist thugs.
We said ‘never again.’ The UK was a safe haven. Now, after the biggest massacre of Jews since the holocaust, British Jewish children are being advised to hide their identities as they walk to school, for their own safety. There should be mass outrage that this is necessary.
@GNDRising
@StopCambo

You guys are the best advert for oil and gas! You’ve managed to get UK Ministers off the fence and actually defend domestic fossil fuel production. Thank you - keep up the good work!! 😘
The irony of the PM talking about the UK being vulnerable to international gas markets and not doing enough on energy self-sufficiency whilst in…Blackpool. Lancashire is awash with gas!!! But it was his myopic 2019 manifesto that imposed the foolish moratorium on onshore E&P.
@GuidoFawkes
I'm shocked and saddened that a senior Labour MP could do this. In the words of Dawn Butler: "Diversity in the workplace matters it also helps to avoid making simple mistakes like this."
@TalkTV
Contemptuous behaviour. He works for the BBC, the national state broadcaster. It is not unreasonable to expect impartiality. He is doing immense damage to the BBC's reputation. It is also transparent that he is on a martyrdom mission.

@sarahwollaston
Dr Wollaston is a principled politician. I’m sure she’ll call a by-election now that she has defected twice. Remember, she supported calls for MPs to be recalled if they switched sides.

Why do these eco-loons think they are above the law? And why do the
@metpoliceuk
and
@SadiqKhan
allow them to get away with it? I cannot think of another political group that would be allowed to do this. Imagine what would happen if Brexiteers tried a similar stunt
@patel4witham
It is not Putin’s job to keep our lights on. It is the responsibility of Ministers, who have been warned about scenarios like this for ages. We are here because successive Governments chose to prioritise decarbonisation at the expense of energy security and affordability.
@davidyelland
It really isn’t. The BBC - our national broadcaster - is morally bankrupt. Has been for years. The BBC exploited and deceived a vulnerable woman to drive ratings. Shame on the BBC and those who seek to excuse Bashir & Hall’s behaviour or minimise the seriousness of this.
@BBCWorld
You cannot win. One minute fashion and media businesses are told to accept all shapes and sizes. The next they are told they have "hijacked" the concept and "commercialised" it. Why not just accept that this is a victory as the concept has become more mainstream?

very thoughtful piece on Anglo attitudes to flat living. I love my apartment but hate the exploitative leasehold tenure. Don't buy a flat until
@michaelgove
abolishes the toxic leasehold system.
Well said. Eco-vanity and identity politics needs to end. We need to return to serious politics because the last few weeks have shown us why it matters.
Britain needs to return to 'hard politics' - obsession with eco-vanity projects and navel-gazing over US-inspired identity politics needs to end.
We are a high-ranking performer when it comes to environmental protection and anti-discrimination rules but weak in many ways (1/5).
@NicolaSturgeon
You cannot help yourself can you? Always trying to find a way to promote the break-up of our precious Union. Very classy. Why not just say you mourn his passing and leave it at that?
Scumbags. The far-left desecrates our monuments and denegrates our history. The far-right violently intimidates ordinary people having a picnic in Hyde Park and give Nazi salutes in front of the Cenotaph and Churchill. Utterly shameful.
@jamesjohnson252
Well said. I’ve been trying to find a way to articulate this all day. We are at risk of not learning the real lessons from this attack. Yes, we need to improve decorum in politics - but let’s not forget this was an Islamist-inspired attack.

I’m going to be in Trieste for Easter. Hopefully you guys can put this on Airbnb. It could become a tourist attraction alongside the Barcolana. Better yet, sell it and send the money to Ukraine

There are none. Zero I can’t think of. There are, however, some good examples of how the French have enhanced Italian cooking. Ditto the Italians have improved some Germanic dishes.
@mark_lynas
I’m no appeaser of Putin, but this is a sensible thread. Thank you for posting. We need cool heads at the moment. We need to be careful not to fall into Putin’s trap by losing control and escalating this conflict. We need to maintain control.
@cheesybeaver
Hilarious that ‘Dragon Girl’ thinks charcuterie is for “rich people” - when it’s origins are the exact reverse! Anyway, you’ve inspired me. It looks delicious and I might have the same tonight!
I just don’t think the
@Conservatives
or
@RishiSunak
have a clue about how much of a backlash is coming their way if they fail to deliver on this agenda that will transform the lives of millions for the better.
If you are looking to buy a flat, put your dreams on hold until England and Wales sorts out its feudal system for managing them. No other country in the world has to put up with the corruption, extortion and lack of accountability enabled by the leasehold system.

And apparently, if you are black then fee-paying public schools are not for you either. Same old Labour - obsessed with identity and nasty class warfare.
@K_Niemietz
Increasingly it does feel like there are very few areas of life that are not politicised. It is exhausting. I wish we could go back to a time when businesses just wanted to sell us stuff rather than promote their values or tell us what they are doing to reach Net Zero.
@theJeremyVine
@TimWilde16
Kim Briggs’ family might disagree with that last statement. Ditto Ian Roland Gunn. Surely the point is that there are rules for all road users and we should abide by them whether we are cyclists or drivers (I happen to be both). We should all be considerate others.
@itvpeston
@johnmcdonnellMP
@realDonaldTrump
We should take no lessons from a man who praised the violence of the IRA against the democratically elected British Government. We should take no lessons from a man who campaigned to make Corbyn our Prime Minister, a man who is on the record praising terrorists and dictators.
If the Government is serious about ending elements of gangster like behaviour in the leasehold system it must listen to
@mtpennycook
and axe forfeiture, which is used by freeholders as a form of leverage to extort cash.

Powerful testimony from

at the first evidence session of the Leasehold Bill Committee.
Government needs to treat people with respect and dignity, not like criminals.
Abolish Leasehold now.

@BarryGardiner
is right. This is not a Left/Right issue. He gets it and it is wonderful to see him reaching out and building broad-based alliances to improve millions of lives. Plenty of leaseholders owe him a whiskey or two when they next see him!
Leasehold Reform Committee started the dry Line By Line scrutiny of clauses today.
But great to see the right wing media calling out the injustice of Leasehold and its monopolistic, anti-free market practices.
This should not be Right/Left
It should be Cross-Party.
@DouglasCarswell
@DouglasKMurray
But we won’t. We never do. We didn’t after 7/7, Manchester, London Bridge, Lee Rigby… DM has spoken eloquently about this issue for over 20yrs. Imho, it is why the war on terror ultimately failed. We’ve never really wanted to confront the true ideological threat facing us.
@JustStop_Oil
Funny how these 'independent' journalists are always nearby to film JSO carrying out criminal acts in real time. If they know JSO are going to commit a crime, do they not have a duty to report them to the police in advance? Or are they in fact a joint enterprise?
Something for
@michaelgove
and
@lisanandy
to consider. Put historical neglect on the statute books. Freeholders who hoovered up service charges, but not maintained a block over a period of time cannot claim back the remediation costs.
@LozzaFox
@NHS
I have been to hospital pretty much every week since July and seen how much pressure they (both patients and staff) are under. It is very stressful. We are literally near the finishing line with the vaccine and you want add further pressure so you can prove a selfish point.
1/ Today I received a letter from managing agent saying I’m in breach of my lease & they are starting proceedings to take my flat away from me.
For not paying a £5500 bill. On a flat I was sold where I was told it would be £600 per year. Less than 2 years ago.
@BBCr4today
@Marthakearney
The Establishment is coming for your car and private means of mobility. Ordinary people who treasure being able to go about their business as and when they choose (and at a reasonable cost) have no idea what is about to happen. This is not what people voted for in 2019.
Everyone listen to Naomi Wolf realize on live radio that the historical thesis of the book she's there to promote is based on her misunderstanding a legal term
Strange times. The Labour Party now has a better policy on leasehold than the Tories and now has my attention as a life longer Tory voter. Things are getting competitive again! Neither the Tories nor Labour can take their voters for granted if they want to win.
If reports that the Tories are abandoning fundamental leasehold reform are true, it will represent the latest broken promise in 13 years of failure.
A Labour government would enact the Law Commission’s recommendations on enfranchisement, commonhold and right to manage in full.
.
@BarryGardiner
doesn't do this because he has lots of leaseholds in his constituency. He's gone above and beyond. He’s helped leaseholders around the country. He does this because he cares and he is motivated by injustice. And if you listened to him in Committee he's also smart!
@RichardWellings
I’m a Conservative, but this barmy net zero agenda is forcing me to consider what is the point in voting for the party going forward. If I wanted a Green Government, I would have voted for the Green Party.
Great to see
@Telegraph
@rubyhinchliffe
covering Nicola’s shocking story. It is also encouraging to hear that
@michaelgove
is now actively looking at ways to strengthen the Bill to put leasehold on the pathway to abolition. Forfeiture must go.

Being friendly and engaging isn’t the issue. The issue is that they thought they should engage in a friendly manner with parents who think it is acceptable to dress their child up as an Islamist terrorist. Presumably, it was a tribute to Hamas?
@DoctorChrisVT
is right. We need to end the monopoly that UPFs have over our national diet and food culture. It should be a source of national shame that sub-standard industrially produced ‘food’ is the norm for so many people. Time for a reset!
@Wera_Hobhouse
What is more sinister is the attempt by politicians and the media to smear people as ‘far-right’ and ‘conspiracy theorists’ for having legitimate social and economic concerns about anti-car transport and urban policies.
@elliemaeohagan
But do not overlook leaseholders - who represent ~20% of residential housing stock in England and Wales. They’re heavily mortgaged tenants that face spiralling charges and, in some cases, ground rents on top of their mortgage. Not all homeowners own the freehold title.
I understand the issue the Government is trying to address here, but won't this end up making domestic holidays more expensive and harm local tourism industries?
@CarolineLucas
Amazing how you can say this with a straight face. You’ve openly said you would not accept Brexit - even if voters voted for it a second time. And yet, you have the temerity to claim others don’t respect democracy. Incredible lack of self-awareness.
Anyone involved in energy policymaking over the last 15yrs needs to be held to account for this failure. Collectively, they’ve destroyed our economy. It didn’t need to be this way >>> UK Inflation on Track to Hit 18% Due to Rising Energy Prices
@CSkidmoreUK
Shame on you for putting ideology ahead of the national interest. As with those MPs who opposed taking military action in 2014 against Syria, I hope you can live with the economic and geopolitical consequences of this vote. Banning fracking aids Putin's war effort.
I hope
@BarryGardiner
doesn't mind me saying this, but to many leaseholders, he is fast becoming to leasehold what James Arbuthnot was to the the sub postmasters. For a long time we've needed an energetic champion prepared to take up the cause in Parliament.

LEASEHOLD – a documentary exposing the injustices of our feudal housing system
From ground rent and service charges to mould and combustible cladding, my documentary telling the victim’s stories is now available to watch here:
Three easy ways
@michaelgove
can strengthen the Leasehold Reform Bill:
1) End forfeiture.
2) Liberalise Right to Manage to increase competitive pressures on freeholders and improve service provision.
3) Mandate share of freehold for future developments.
@FreeLeasehlders
REAL pensioners come out against the feudal leasehold system. They are angry and they are organised. They all have a vote and they are more likely to use it.
@michaelgove
@RishiSunak
act now to strengthen the Bill and protect them from the scam that is the leasehold system.
According to an
@OpiniumResearch
poll this month:
💥62% of people aged 65+ want leasehold scrapped
💥65% want all ground rents gone

So Labour plans to only build freehold houses for sale?
If the party does not have a plan for abolishing the leasehold system for flats, they cannot claim to be the party of homeownership.
This is utterly damning. The
@ThePLSA
has a lot of explaining to do here. They are allowed to u-turn, but to allege that
@HarryScoffin
‘misunderstood’ a quote issued by telephone, when it was sent by email is really sloppy. They should set the record straight and come clean.
Before the Public Bill Committee closed on February 1st,
@ThePLSA
submitted a letter to MPs seeking to trivialise the significance of their September 2023 statement to us and to delegitimise leasehold campaigners. Here is our open letter to the Chief Executive. (1/2)
I know Shaun and others are doing their best to keep the dream alive. We have 24 hrs to save the Bill. Labour and Conservatives must put politics and work together to ram it through.
RESCUE THE LEASEHOLD AND FREEHOLD REFORM BILL
So many of you have written to me sick with worry about the fate of this Bill.
Our party promised it in our election-winning 2019 manifesto. We must deliver it.
I will keep fighting for this legislation to be in the wash-up.
@DouglasCarswell
And not a peep from the other broadcasters either! Funny how they all close ranks on each other like a bunch of mafiosi! All that rubbish they spew about being defenders of the truth, holding the powerful to account etc. Our media class is just in need of reform as our political.

is really worrying and confirms the legitimate anxieties many have about the direction of travel we are taking on net zero. Dystopian.
What a day for

It is grotesque. My partner is Italian. She was diagnosed with cancer last year. Currently in remission. But she has been unable to see her elderly mother for ~12-months because of travel restrictions and quarantine rules. But a UEFA grandee is exempt so he can watch football.

This is total rubbish. Increased reliance on intermittent renewables without sufficient backup is a recipe for economic ruin. Alongside investment in nuclear, we need another dash for domestic gas - both in the North Sea and onshore.
This week, a number of lobby journalists were contacted by cynical ground rent grazers spinning that leasehold reforms to protect homeowners from being screwed over will ruin granny 🙄. This video busts that myth.

programme on cancer for BBC Horizon. A very raw, but brilliant film. Everyone should watch it to help them understand what patients have to go through and why they are some of the bravest people you’ll ever meet.
@Councillorsuzie
@MayorofLondon
You do realise that this Conservative Government endorsed ULEZs as a “placed-based solution to decarbonising transport” in its Transport Decarbonisation Plan (2021), yes? Grant Shapps wrote the Foreword and Boris endorsed it.
@stephenpollard
Who else is to blame? When you've been told that some medical appointments - including for cancer - are being scaled back because the decisions he took pre-Xmas - despite everything we know about Covid - have resulted in hospitals being overwhelmed then what do you expect?
@BBCBreaking
And? I’m more interested in how much senior civil servants, council bosses, serving politicians, BBC execs and presenters etc take home each month.
It really is crazy how the

In January the government rightly promised to abolish the feudal system of

, but now they appear to be rowing back.
Fundamental reform is long overdue. It’s time to end leasehold.
