I've been stopped and searched, Dawn.
Yes, police make mistakes. But they're not racist.
Instead of political attacks, let's improve relations between police and the communities they serve.
As Mayor, I'll back our police. I'll never defund them like
@SadiqKhan
.
@Channel4News
"The Met Police is systematically racist and it needs to change."
Labour MP Dawn Butler says "there's something wrong with the system" - after she was stopped by police in London today.
Volunteers cleaning vandalised memorial on Whitehall berated by a small group of protesters.
Thankfully in London abusive clashes have been low - this sort of thing seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
Churchill was a hero. He led this country when we stood alone in the fight against fascism.
My granddad volunteered from Jamaica to join his war effort.
Without him, we’d be without the freedoms that these protesters are exercising today.
@sadiqkhan
, when will you speak up?
This is appalling.
Police officers attacked in Hackney today.
This is what happens
@SadiqKhan
when you try to appease the mob. You lose control of the streets.
Our police have expertly shut down the protests in Trafalgar Square, allowing them to get back to protecting our city from violent crime.
Sadiq Khan's response? Question the police as to why this was necessary.
So my question to Sadiq is: Why can't you just back the police?
People are dying on London’s streets each and every day and what is the Mayor’s response? To laugh and call me names.
My job, Mr. Mayor, is to hold *you* to account, because *you* are the one not doing your job.
Today it's been revealed that Sadiq Khan made false and dishonest statements to the London Assembly to cover up his manipulation of the ULEZ results. This is unacceptable behaviour that must be looked into.
#TheULEZScandal
Now that the results are in, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on this election.
While we didn’t quite get over the line, I’m incredibly proud of my team. Despite a global pandemic, they ran an amazing campaign and together we shattered expectations.
Extinction Rebellion, your point has been made.
There is a climate emergency, but we also have a crime emergency. You can't distract the police any further while we have had 2 fatal stabbings.
If Sadiq Khan is too busy hiding under his desk to tell you that, then I will.
I’ve been chased by the National Front. I’ve been called the n word.
So I know what racism is. And I know the police aren’t racist.
To make a difference, we should improve relations between police and underrepresented communities. Not attack them for political gain.
Churchill fought the far-right his entire life, including here at home.
George Floyd's own brother called for an end to destructive protest.
Anybody, right or left, looking for trouble in London today - you betray the cause that both men believed in.
Freedom and fairness.
I’m a black man from Ladbroke Grove. I experienced racism from a young age. I know what it is.
So stop the games. Let’s bring people together, work with police and improve community relations.
If you want to help, ask
@SadiqKhan
to drop his plans to cut £110m from our police.
Twitter I'm tired and need to get some sleep. Can someone please explain institutional racism to Shaun. I think it's important he understands what it is.
Thanks Twitter friends. Night night
This is what London looks like when the Mayor loses control of the streets.
Surging crime, violence at the BLM protests and now this.
It’s time for Sadiq Khan to take responsibility for the safety of both Londoners and his police officers.
Today.
What does ‘superficially black’ mean
@RupaHuq
?If Kwasi Kwateng doesn’t sound black how should he sound? Does he have to fit your version of how he should talk, look & think to count as black?
@RupaHuq
must explain how her comments are not anything other than overt racism.
While the Mayor was busy calling me names and chuckling to himself at
#MQT
today, three more Londoners were stabbed in broad daylight.
Instead of acting childishly at the
@LondonAssembly
@SadiqKhan
should focus on the safety of Londoners
Too little too late. You can't embolden one day and then urge restraint the next.
This mess is your making, Londoners have had enough of these protests.
My granddad was one of them - he came from Jamaica to fight for this country. That was his choice.
Whoever did this also made a choice. The wrong choice.
The Cenotaph represents those who fought and died for our freedoms, including the freedom to protest.
Have some respect.
Thousands of young men came from Africa and the Caribbean to defend Britain in two world wars, every one of them a volunteer. Today, protesters vandalised the memorial to all the men, black, brown and white, who fell in those conflicts. Their lives mattered, too.
Mate, I was one of the hidden homeless. You won’t fix the problem by tweeting blame.
You promised hundreds of thousands of new homes, and you haven’t built them. You promised to tackle homelessness, and you haven’t done that either.
You’re the Mayor. Accept responsibility.
The Government’s announcement today is woefully inadequate. Instead of wasting time and money with an unnecessary review, they should look closer at the impact that a decade of austerity has had, not just here in London but around the country.
On day one of my mayoralty, I will drop
@SadiqKhan
’s statue commission.
Instead of trying to forget the past, we should be focused on the future.
And the Mayor needs to be focused on retaking control of the streets, not trying to appease the mob.
I was a youth worker for over twenty years.
So I’ve seen London’s problems — and I’ve seen London’s potential.
I know that together we can make London safer, greener and more affordable.
That’s why I’m standing for Mayor.
Take a look at my video for more.
I spent 20 years as a youth worker helping give young Londoners a fresh start in life.
And right now, London needs a fresh start too.
Safe streets. Affordable homes. A bigger, better (not bankrupt) transport network. Lower taxes.
I have a plan.
Watch here to find out more 👇🏿
Please don’t lie to us,
@SadiqKhan
. On 21st September you called for the 10pm curfew.
You don’t care about businesses. You don’t care about jobs. You don’t care about Londoners.
Your time is up.
We need a rapid review of the 10pm curfew.
It is clearly hitting hospitality businesses hard, and it’s contributing to dangerous overcrowding on our streets. The Government must review this decision.
I have some thoughts about tearing down statues.
👉🏾Communities should make decisions, not mobs
👉🏾 Statues should end up in museums, not seabeds
👉🏾 We need to be building more monuments to showcase our present day role models, not cutting ourselves off from our past
THREAD 1/17
Ellie and I have just voted.
We want our children to be able to live in a safer, fairer, more affordable London.
And for that to happen, London needs a fresh start.
Don’t forget to vote today!
I was homeless and unemployed. But I turned my life around.
And I spent 20 years as a youth worker helping others do the same.
So I’m not a typical politician. But that’s a good thing.
We need a mayor who brings Londoners together
See my video for more
Standing for mayor is the experience of a lifetime. So with polls now closed, I want to thank everyone who voted for me and campaigned with me.
Whatever the result, we gave a voice to Londoners who know our city needs a fresh start. We can all be proud.
See you on Saturday!
3 more Londoners were stabbed this weekend with a teenager fighting for his life.
Why is the Mayor in Brussels announcing something he has no powers to do, & not here in London speaking with the Met about how to stop our kids being stabbed?
.
@SadiqKhan
is hiring momentum activists who shout at the queen.
I’ll hire 8,000 police officers and 4,000 youth workers to make London safe.
The Mayor needs to get his priorities right. It’s time for a fresh start.
Just to let you all know that my brother Dwain (pictured far left) died unexpectedly yesterday, so going to take a couple of days to look after my mum.
Rest in peace my brother.
Sadiq Khan is putting up the Congestion Charge to £15, expanding it to 7 days a week from 7am - 10pm. I'm firmly against this. At a time when the Mayor should be supporting London, he's taxing them.
1/2
Outside politics, I’m extremely proud to serve as an Hon. Colonel of the Royal Fusiliers, with responsibility for Cadets.
This
#ArmedForcesDay
, we thank everyone involved in the armed forces- for the work they do at home and abroad. They represent the very best of all of us 🇬🇧
Enough of these poisonous identity politics. My wife is white; so she’s not a proper Londoner?! Are our kids half Londoner?! It’s absurd & wrong. Our mayor is more intent on taking ‘on brand’ photos dividing our city than improving London for everyone.
With Corbynism now a smoking ruin, Sadiq Khan is frantically trying to distance himself from the Corbyn project. I say not so fast. Let’s take a look at Khan’s record on this: (THREAD)
London needs a fresh start - not fresh divisions.
So on day one as Mayor, I’ll scrap
@SadiqKhan
’s statue commission and focus on bringing communities together.
This is a lie from
@SadiqKhan
.
This u-turn - hiking fares and ending his tourist travel subsidy - was announced in March, before the lockdown or bailout.
Continuing to blame Gov for his own financial negligence is not leadership. It's playing politics.
We needed to secure a deal to keep
@TfL
operating, but the Government has forced Londoners to pay a very heavy price for doing the right thing on
#COVID19
- by hiking TfL fares, stopping the Freedom Pass during busy times and loading TfL with debt.
The Mayor has closed 38 police stations all across London as murders reach an 11 year high.
As Mayor, I will re-open all 38 closed police stations and
#MakeLondonSafe
.
On
@GMB
this morning, Sadiq Khan finally admitted that it was his decision to increase the Congestion charge to £15 and expand it's hours.
"It was us."
Given how many times he's tried to blame the Gov for his own mistakes, this is an important clarification.
Please RT.
Hi
@SadiqKhan
I've had some experience "walking in the shoes of a black person"
And siding with a small but violent group that hijacked an otherwise peaceful protest, only betrays the cause of fairness and equality that the majority of protesters were there to promote.
The Home Secretary and our Prime Minister should try and walk in the shoes of a black person in Bristol.
The lack of empathy shown by Priti Patel and Boris Johnson over the Edward Colston statue is breathtaking.
After the Winsor Report highlighted significant concerns regarding Sadiq Khans behaviour towards Cressida Dick in the run-up to her resignation, the Police & Crime Committee has passed a motion today to formally summon him to account for his behaviour.
#TheSadiqSummons
We expect MPs to unite us, not divide us
@DawnButlerBrent
We expect the Mayor to back police, yet he’s silent.
Here’s my commitment.
As Mayor, I’ll improve relations between police and communities. I’ll back them to make our streets safer
@MailOnline
Getting a grip on crime is the number one priority for London.
The current Mayor is failing to do this and today I called him out.
People are dying and people are scared. Yet he simply refuses to step up.
#MakeLondonSafeAgain
#ShaunForLondon
Germany has let fans back into stadiums. France has let fans back into stadiums.
@SadiqKhan
has let London fall behind.
As
@TheSun
says, the sports industry is worth billions to the UK. So let’s get fans safely into stadiums and help our economy recover.
The Mayor is threatening to cut the police budget by £110m - that's 1,692 officers.
Despite hiking his office costs by £527m (320%).
A summer of crime is coming.
@SadiqKhan
needs to retake control of the streets.
👇🏿 THREAD 1/14
Sadiq Khan.
The Mayor who bankrupted TfL.
Then got the rest of the country to bail him out.
And taxed London's key workers and small businesses to pay for it.
.
@Sadiqkhan
mate. Now's not the time to play politics.
And you shouldn't be disclosing what happens in confidential COBRA meetings with the Prime Minister. He needs to be worrying about the country, not your twitter feed.
I met
@BorisJohnson
today to discuss my pledge to reopen the 38 police stations closed by
@SadiqKhan
.
Police stations are so important in the fight to keep our communities safe, and I’m delighted to have the Prime Minister’s support in this.
In a few weeks, Transport for London will run out of money. Again.
@SadiqKhan
will blame coronavirus. Again.
But he’s wrong. Again.
So here’s everything you need to know about the next TfL bailout in two minutes and twenty seconds.
To be clear, it was
@SadiqKhan
's decision, and his alone, to increase the Congestion Charge from £11.50 to £15, and expand it to 7 days a week.
THREAD 1/5
London can host the
#Olympics
in 2020.
We have the infrastructure and the experience.
And due to the
#coronavirus
outbreak, the world might need us to step up.
As Mayor, I will make sure London is ready to answer the call and host the Olympics again.
The police should have the support they need to perform their duties effectively.
While we don’t yet know all the facts of Dawn Butler's stop, it seems sensible to release the Body Worn Camera footage of the incident.
We are aware of video footage that is circulating on social media this evening following the stopping of a car in Hackney. Our colleagues want to be able to share their Body Worn Video of the incident and as a Federation we are calling for this to happen.
With reports of yet more stabbings in London this week, I told
@itvlondon
that the Mayor should be here working with the Met to sort it out, not grandstanding in Brussels.
#MakeLondonSafe
Infuriating that Extinction Rebellion are choosing to disrupt London’s recovery with these damaging protests; wretched for ordinary hardworking Londoners who are just trying to get to and from work. Londoners need the the chance to rebuild after Covid... 1/2
The Mayor loves to blame the Government whenever he can get away with it.
But it was his decision to increase fares and hike up the Congestion Charge. Nobody else's.
@SadiqKhan
needs to step up and take responsibility.
.
@SadiqKhan
launched his 102 page manifesto today.

London needs a Mayor who will work with Government to get the best deal for London instead of blaming them for all our problems.
The fact is the Mayor has no control over Brexit.
The Mayor’s job is to keep Londoners safe. You’re failing.
The Mayor’s job is to build homes. You’re failing.
The Mayor’s job is to manage TfL and oversee Crossrail. You’re failing.
I’m saying I would do those jobs.
The Tory candidate really did say with a straight face today that Brexit - the single biggest economic & social threat to London - is none of the Mayor’s business. Backing Boris Johnson on Brexit is yet another reason why he's unfit to be Mayor of London.
This morning, the Mayor chose to prioritise spending £44m on giving free travel to the friends and family of TfL staff, rather than hiring more police and fighting crime in London.
👉🏿
London is the greatest city in the world, but right now, Londoners aren't sharing in the success of our city.
Crime is out of control.
Transport has got worse yet more expensive.
Housing is not affordable.
I know that because my story is London's story.
#MakeLondonSafe
ENOUGH. I’m tired of waiting for a Mayor who never acts.
We can’t stand by as Londoners are lost to knife crime.
We need to pull London together - that’s why I’ll be hosting a knife crime summit ASAP, bringing together the experts in our city.
If the Mayor won’t act, I will.
London is in trouble.
@SadiqKhan
has wasted billions, while investment in transport and housing has dried up.
And today he admitted he would prefer to sack police officers than his press officers.
Just as the capital faces a new summer of crime.
I met
@PritiPatel
today. We discussed how to make London’s streets safer.
She backs us hiring more police and is already giving City Hall the funds to hire 1,036 new officers.
So
@SadiqKhan
must abandon his plan to defund police by £110m. Public safety must come first.
I salute those standing up for fairness in a peaceful and constructive way.
But those engaging in violence tonight are criminals. They risk destroying any chance of change.
To the protesters being abusive or violent: you are hurting the cause - stop.
While
@DawnButlerBrent
attacks the police, another young Londoner has died.
Crime is rising. Police need our support to tackle it.
So why is the Mayor defunding the police by £110m?
We need a Mayor who puts safety first — not politics.
@emilysgoddard
This isn't right.
At least 14 TfL workers have died. Maybe focus on keeping the people that work for you safe, before attacking the government to score political points?
Tube and bus workers urgently need PPE. It's your responsibility to provide it - nobody else’s.
It’s a scandal our Government has failed to ensure there’s enough PPE reaching frontline health and social care workers, let alone other key workers responding to
#COVID19
.
We must now work with international partners to overcome these challenges.
Threatening to cut the transport system at the expense of the safety of hundreds of thousands of key workers in London, just to blackmail the Gov for a bigger bailout, is not leadership.
And will any inquiry cover why the Mayor of London couldn’t put on enough tube trains to keep NHS workers safe on their way to work?
Instead of attacking the government during a crisis .
@SadiqKhan
, do your job and keep our heroes safe.
"When this is over there will need to be, some people call it a reckoning, or a public inquiry."
@SadiqKhan
says the government should face an inquest for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
#crisistalks
Last month the Gov had to bailout the Mayor because of his appalling management of TfL's finances.
Now he's demanding another bailout.
@SadiqKhan
employs more press officers than No10.
Yet he'd prefer to cut the police service.
Totally unacceptable.
This afternoon
@LondonLabour
sided with the Chinese Government and turned their back on the Uyghur Muslim community, as well as the people of Hong Kong.
My motion won cross party support, but lost 9-8.
I oppose genocide.
@LondonLabour
apparently don’t.
Tory mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey just tabled a motion in the London Assembly to de-twin London and Beijing over Hong Kong and the treatment of Uighurs in Xianjing
Fell nine votes to eight with Labour voting against and Greens abstaining
Nobody should have to open a letter like this...
But I won’t stop fighting for Londoners, no matter how much of this hate I get.
Let’s do it right London. Let’s talk about issues, not race.
The scenes at Sarah Everard’s vigil in Clapham tonight are horrifying.
With ultimate responsibility for policing and public safety in London, the Mayor must immediately explain how these events were allowed to unfold.
This weekend, the Mayor surrendered in the face of the mob.
When we betray the memory of the best among us, we become small and fearful in the face of adversity.
Why is Winston Churchill still boarded up
@SadiqKhan
?
I grew up in a council house. I’ve been homeless. I know poverty far better than
@AngelaRayner
.
If
@AngelaRayner
really cared, she’d stop playing politics and tell
@SadiqKhan
to scrap his 10% council tax hike.
A more helpful contribution to working-class families than a tweet.
A disgusting attack on working class families from
@ShaunBaileyUK
. He must immediately apologise.
Working class parents know a lot more about spending money wisely than Tory Ministers wasting taxpayers' money on disgracefully inadequate food parcels.

Today in the House of Commons, the Transport Secretary confirmed that increasing the Congestion Charge was NOT a condition of the TfL bailout. It was
@SadiqKhan
's decision to hike the charge, and his alone.
Please watch & RT to share the truth. 👇🏾
Threats to kill whitey are hate speech. And hate speech is never funny.
But as
@telegraph
reports, the BBC defended these comments.
Why? These comments don’t advance equality — they cause division.
I’ve asked
@BBC
’s Director General for an explanation.
These Extinction Rebellion protests are the last thing Londoners need. Our police need to be able to focus resources on fighting the very serious crime problem we are facing in our city 2/2
Sadiq Khan bankrupted TfL. That’s why he needed a £1.6bn bailout.
And because taxpayers footed the bill, the govt asked for oversight of TfL’s finances.
This isn’t a power grab. It’s an attempt to protect taxpayers from a Mayor who can’t manage a budget.
I've had this all my life, it's alright, I've got thick skin.
But nobody who wants to contribute to public life - from any party or background - deserves abuse.
Let's fight on the ideas.

Cabbies can’t buy new diesel black cabs — they have to buy expensive electric cabs.
But
@SadiqKhan
won’t help them make the switch.
So I will. As Mayor, I’ll give every cabbie an interest-free loan to buy an electric cab.
Read about it in
@TheSun
Disappointing.
Yet more name-calling, blame-shifting and rudeness from Sadiq Khan.
Discussing increasing incidents of sexual assaults on the tube isn't a game to me and it certainly isn't something to have "some fun with", Mr. Mayor.
Yesterday,
@SadiqKhan
gave an interview with
@BBCTomEdwards
where he blamed the Government for the Congestion Charge increase.
This is a lie.
His own spokesman has confirmed that it was the Mayor's decision to increase the charge.
@SadiqKhan
will you correct the record?
This election is between me and Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour candidate: Sadiq Khan.
The person who can’t keep us safe, can’t build our homes and can’t get Crossrail over the line.
