Every so often, you remember that in April 2020, Scotland’s chief medical officer resigned because she visited her own second home, with her own immediate family.
Macron: "Brexit is the choice of the British people... pushed by those who predicted easy solutions... Those people are liars. They left the next day so they didn’t have to manage it."

Bloody hell. Asked a fairly reasonable question in the Commons, Matt Hancock replies: “I will not have this divisive language. I will not have it.”
You will not have Parliamentary scrutiny? Then you may be in the wrong job, sir.
I’m sorry but if
@maitlis
can’t walk outside and tell you it’s raining then what’s the point in journalism?
He broke the rules. On the Barnard Castle trip at least, that is incontrovertible. Fact. Not opinion.
NEW: Sky News understands the BBC statement on Gary Lineker is incorrect.
That Lineker has not agreed to 'step back', and has instead been taken off air as he is unwilling to apologise for his comments this week on social media.
The man with the tusk is apparently a Polish chef named Łukasz who works at Fishmongers Hall.
Bloody Poles. Coming over here. Taking out our terrorists.
Anti-lockdown protesters, including Piers Corbyn, have gathered outside court to make political statements after the sentencing of Wayne Couzens for the murder of Sarah Everard.
Staggeringly inappropriate.
We’re outside the UK visa application centre in Rzezsow, Poland.
It’s -3 degrees. People have been waiting in this queue for 3 hours.
There are children here. An 84 year old woman.
And plenty of room inside, but they won’t open the door.
For me, this was one of the defining moments of the Queen’s reign. 2011. The first British monarch to visit Ireland in 100 years. And she did this.
“President, and friends,” she says, in Irish, to the visible astonishment of Mary McAleese.
Still gives me goosebumps today.
If you’re tweeting about Boris Johnson right now for any other reason than to wish him a speedy recovery, do us all a favour and put your phone away.

Things already escalating here on Parliament Square. Bottles and smoke bombs thrown at police. And you can see as a protestor smacks my phone out of my hand as I try to film the scuffles.
Turning on journalists too.

@LBCNews
It bears repeating for those at the back.
Questioning, criticising or otherwise holding to account the Government of the United Kingdom is NOT unpatriotic, or failing to sufficiently “believe in Britain”.
It is the democratic duty of Members of Parliament.
Hard to believe this is central London on a Monday night as opposed to some decadent festival.
Spontaneous cheering. People quite literally dancing in the streets- the liberation is palpable.
Middle class Oxford student stabs boyfriend with a bread knife. Avoids jail.
Homeless Polish man steals somebody else's marathon number. Gets 16 weeks in jail.
Go figure.
Between 2014 and 2017, Israel is estimated to have deported around 4,000 asylum seekers to Rwanda and Uganda.
Nearly every single one of them left. Many were smuggled back towards Europe, facing capture by militias, Islamic State, and a perilous crossing of the Med.

Muslims who are offended by cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad being shown at Batley Grammar School have every right to let their feelings be known.
But they must also know that they have absolutely no right not to be offended.
Blasphemy is not a crime.
Extraordinary. The PM’s official spokesman says he can’t act as a spokesman for Dominic Cummings, so all questions about Dominic Cummings’ actions need to “go somewhere else”.
It’s not entirely clear where they go, if not to Number 10.
This story is truly stranger than fiction.
It now turns out that one of the people that stopped the terrorist was himself a convicted murderer, out of prison on day release.
Now we’re having to ask questions about the nature of rehabilitation and redemption.
Dear
@metpoliceuk
. Last weekend, my wife thinks she was drugged. She got home safe. She kept the drink. But has spent all week being passed off between you and the NHS, with nobody willing to take responsibility for testing her.
Is this treating sexual violence as a "priority"?
BREAKING: More bad news for the NHS coronavirus tracing app.
Parliament's Committee on Human Rights says it is "not reassured" the app protects privacy, and that if the app doesn't prove effective, the level of data gathered may actually break the law.
@LBC
Hope you will forgive me if I am a bit less active on here, and absent from your screens for a few weeks.
Some rather more pressing business to attend to...
Send help 😬
Well. What was previously a joyous atmosphere turns to a chorus of boos and whistles as Boris and Carrie Johnson walk up the steps into St Paul’s Cathedral.

People in the queue here all say the same thing. If they happened to live in France, or Germany, they wouldn’t need to be here at all. They could just take their relatives with them.
The U.K. has quite literally left them out in the cold.
Several hundred people are gathered in Parliament Square, here ostensibly to protect monuments and statues from a BLM protest that is no longer happening.
Heavy police presence, but so far peaceful, people mostly just drinking in the sun.
No social distancing.

PM has just told the Commons: "There will be no checks between Northern Ireland and GB"
Two options:
1) He is being deliberately untruthful.
2) He doesn't understand the deal that he has just negotiated.
NHS: “An increased risk of miscarriage is not linked to your emotional state during pregnancy, such as being stressed or depressed”
So he can “believe” what he likes. It doesn’t make it true.
And it comes close to blaming women’s emotions for their miscarriages.
My wife went for a run today. A man started to jog alongside her and tried to talk to her. It’s not the first time.
She just wrote this, and I’m sharing with her permission.
This is hilarious. White House style briefings scrapped by Johnson (in spite of spending £2m on a shiny new room) because... journalists might ask difficult questions?
Blimey. Medical journal

NEW: Nearly half of Conservative Party members (47%) think Islam is a threat to the British way of life, according to polling for charity
@hopenothate
And yet just 8% thought the Party had a problem with Islamophobia.
This is extraordinary. The Conservative Party press Twitter account has renamed itself "factcheckUK" as if to give the impression it is a genuine fact checking account.
Unbelievable.
Wow. The most significant thing you'll hear today from Chris Whitty:
"We have probably reached the limits of what we can do in terms of opening up as a society... The idea that we can open up everything is clearly wrong. Choices will need to be made."

Things are getting a little angry again.

Here’s the thing. The essay was sent to basically all journalists this morning. Getting hold of a copy is not journalism. It’s having an email address.
It was issued under embargo. They have a right to be a bit miffed if you break that.
Can we just be absolutely clear. Imposing a no fly zone on Ukraine would be an act of war by NATO against Russia. The cataclysm that would provoke would be unimaginable.
Deeply unserious to be even considering it. And for prominent journalists to be earnestly suggesting it.
Truly, there is no moment more “BBC” than Kirsty Wark appearing on
@BBCNewsnight
to say “we asked the BBC to appear on the BBC to discuss the BBC but the BBC said no.”
You do wonder, when all this is over, whether all the people panic buying toilet roll might have developed a bit more empathy for the people fleeing war in Syria and trying to stop their kids drowning in the Mediterranean.
But I doubt it.
What I simply fail to understand about the Government’s argument that strict visa controls for refugees are necessary to prevent Russian spies, is that if Putin wants to send spies, he’ll send spies.
Salisbury or Litvinenko weren’t the result of a lax refugee policy.
Explosive revelations in the ST that suggest Braverman was warned over Manston,& may have mislead Parliament.

Amazing. Antivax protestors storm Television Centre… which the BBC left in 2013.
So they’re effectively storming the sets of Loose Women and the Graham Norton Show.
Ouch.

The Good Friday Agreement was transformational.
And there's no better evidence of that than in the fabric of Belfast itself.
A short thread on some of the changes my home has seen in 25 years of peace.
Let's start with an obvious one. Stunning Victoria Square.
Of course, that may be the immediate problem. But the source of the issue is a decision to use a tiny private company in a remote Polish town to process thousands of visa applications, and to maintain a highly bureaucratic visa process in the face of a humanitarian crisis.
The queue to see the Queen lying in state at Westminster now stretches *several miles* along the Thames. It’s growing by the second.

Been pointed out that the wording of the BBC statement does not actually suggest Lineker had agreed.
It says “the BBC has decided he will step back”
Though I think you could still argue the impression given was of a more consensual decision. Source close to him objected to that
BREAKING: The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse has identified “extensive failures” by local authorities and police forces to tackle the sexual exploitation of children by grooming gangs and other networks.

Oh dear. A hospital in Somerset has just announced it’s not taking any new patients because it has so many COVID-19 cases.
Not the headlines you want as we start to ease lockdown...
“She was just walking home” has been the rallying cry over the death of Sarah Everard.
But in court today the prosecution has said there are five better words that summarise what happened to Sarah:
“Deception, kidnap, rape, strangulation, fire.”

The prayer to open the US Congress ends with “Amen and Awoman”
Honestly. Amen is derived from the Hebrew word אָמֵן, or āmēn, meaning truth. And has absolutely no gendered quality whatsoever.
These people are dewomented.
The UN Convention of the Law of the Sea is fairly plain. There is a duty to rescue anyone in distress. Not to turn them back because it’s politically inconvenient.

If I hear one more person say "but my mortgage rate was much higher in the 1980s/90s and we survived"...
It's really simple. Houses are much more expensive now.
The average cost of the current rises is about £2000. The cost of 15% rates in 1989 was £1,200 in today's money.
So. In fairly major job news, tonight I will be making my debut presenting

Insomniacs of the world unite!
See you at 00:00.
There is a strange Venn diagram of people who think it is the natural and obvious order of things that the island of Ireland should be united as one geographic unit, and that Scotland should break away from England.
In 2018, Israeli newspaper
@haaretzcom
tracked down six of those who had stayed, and wrote that:
"All six live a meager existence in Kigali, struggling to survive."
Is this "building a new life in a dynamic country" as Johnson has just said?
The final warning from Israel's experience is that after a significant public backlash, and legal intervention from the Supreme Court, the scheme fell apart.
Or, put another way: the people who actually advise the Government on people's behaviour refusing to answer any questions about how this scandal may affect people's behaviour.

Commenting on the policy in 2017, the UN Refugee Agency said it was "concerned that these persons have not found adequate safety or a durable solution to their plight."
It also said it was only aware of nine people who had stayed in Rwanda. Nine.

I think, in hilariously “W1A” fashion, part of the problem seems to have been BBC News’ own reporting of the BBC statement.
It seemed to imply at first that Lineker was involved in the decision to “step back”
Exhibit A:
Just so we’re clear guys. Times that it’s ok to approach a woman whilst she‘s out jogging:
1) She has just dropped something.
2) She is about to run into an open sewer.
3) She is on fire.
4) Literally no other time. That’s it.
