NEW: On a huge day for Boris Johnson things just got that bit worse.
High court rules govt’s use of “VIP lane” to award PPE contracts to two companies during pandemic first wave was unlawful.
So much to say but best to leave it for now given, for obvious reasons, certain people want nothing more than to have a debate about the media. Instead, will just say I couldn’t be prouder to work on

Conservative peer Lord Finkelstein: "Jacob Rees Mogg says both inaccurately and intellectually offensively that this is a row about cake- this is a row about whether govts are subject to the laws they set, which is a far more profound question than about bday cake."

Starmer: “they organised the TV debates because they thought it’d be a great chance to hear from the candidates first hand. But then disaster struck: because the public heard from the candidates first hand.”

Transport Sec Grant Shapps is on holiday in Spain. He will, therefore, have to quarantine for 14 days when he gets home.
Omg who cares whether or not Corbyn watches the Queen on Christmas Day.
Given 6.4 million viewed the last one, the vast majority of Britain didn’t either.
Prince Harry on the Jeremy Clarkson article: “not only was what he said horrific, also cruel and hurtful to my wife, but it also encourages other people around the UK and the world, men particularly, to think that it’s acceptable to treat women that way.”
Former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers tells Bloomberg: “It makes me very sorry to say, but I think the UK is behaving a bit like an emerging market turning itself into a submerging market.”
High Court rules Matt Hancock “acted unlawfully" on procurement and transparency:“The SoS spent vast quantities of public money on pandemic procurement...The public were entitled to see who this money was going to, what it was being spent on and how the contracts were awarded.”
Untruths being peddled everywhere.
Johnson wasn’t forced out by anyone but himself. The Privileges Committee (Conservative dominated) would recommend, the Commons (Conservative dominated) would vote, his constituents (Conservative majority) would decide.
He chose to quit.

Angela Rayner says she’ll take no lectures from Raab on defence as when Afghanistan was falling “he was on a sun lounger.”

2018: Priti Patel resigns for conducting her own foreign policy: “I fell below the high standards that are expected of a Secretary of State.”
*brief interlude*
2019: she becomes a more senior Secretary of State.
This wouldn’t happen in any other walk of life.
Worth remembering that when PM says everyone should support NHS Track and Trace- many elements are not run by the NHS. They’re outsourced to Deloitte, Serco, Mitie, G4S, Sodexo, Boots, Randox and the like...
.
@Keir_Starmer
: "I'm really frustrated because I raised this with the PM on Wednesday. He dismissed it and went on to tell people to have a 'merry little Xmas' only 3 days later to rip up their plans. I think the British public are entitled to more decisive leadership than that."
Weird feeling. After 10.5 years and roughly £21,000 of debt- I finally paid off the last instalment of my student loan today.
Next month, for the first time- I’ll receive my full post tax salary, for the first time since I graduated.
Worcester College, Oxford has just confirmed that it has confirmed the places of all of their UK offer holders, irrespective of their A-level results. Says their 2020 impact is their "most diverse cohort ever."
This from a senior figure in the NHS on Matt Hancock: “We are outraged-our staff have had to sit with people dying without families by their sides in deference to national rules. Elderly confused people have not had physical contact that can bring so much reassurance...”
This leaflet is given out by the authorities at Zosin crossing to 🇺🇦 arrivals: “You will receive a hot meal, drink and accommodation…don’t worry about the formalities. Your further stay in Poland will be legal. You don’t have to submit any applications in the coming days.”

Wow-searing from Theresa May to Priti Patel on Rwanda removal policy suggesting it would be illegal: "I do not support it, on the grounds of legality, practicality and efficacy."
I think if we read a story about another country where a national political leader threatened to pull a broadcaster’s licence because he didn’t like their coverage, we know what our reaction would be.
Fmr Environment Sec George Eustice has spoken about the post-Brexit UK/Australia trade deal in the Commons. He says now no longer a minister: "I no longer have to put such a positive gloss on what was agreed...the Australia deal is not actually a very good trade deal for the UK."
To fight climate change, France bans domestic flights where cities are linked by train with a journey time of two and a half hours or less. Will mean flights between Paris, Nantes, Bordeaux and Lyons will be shut down.
Is the first country in the world to introduce such a ban.
🌳 Ce matin, l’interdiction des lignes aériennes en cas d’alternative de moins de 2h30 en train devient réalité.
C’est un signal majeur et une 1ère mondiale ! On continue !
Remember doing a story back in 2018 saying that roaming charges were going to return for British travellers after Brexit. Govt at the time said it was v unlikely because companies wouldn’t do it. Others dismissed as more scaremongering etc.
A few years later 👇
The range in reaction from Matt Hancock is remarkable. In case of Prof Ferguson, who was prob immune having likely had Covid, Mr Hancock said it was a matter for the police. Mr Cummings though, whose family actually travelled with Covid, apparently acted entirely within the rules
What’s remarkable about this (admittedly very short) leadership race is that despite the fact the situation for the country is so grave, nearly all of it is seen and articulated through prism of the future Conservative Party itself. Almost no discussion of wider policy at all.
Finished reading Harry on Afghanistan in Spare. It’s actually a moving account of the grim reality of war, and a reminder he fought bravely. His respect for the army and comrades is clearly profound. Rather proves his entire point about being repeatedly taken out of context.
NEW: Rishi Sunak spokesperson confirms Sunak did hold a US green card until October 2021. That means he held a green card for a full 19 months while he was Chancellor.
Rachel Reeves: "The cost to the taxpayer of Covid fraud is estimated at £7.2bn. Every cheque signed by Rishi Sunak...We'll appoint a Covid corruption commissioner, a hit squad of investigators...to take the fraudsters to court...We want that money back."
John Major: “The Northern Ireland Protocol was arguably one of the worst pieces of negotiation that we have seen in recent history...it does help, if you sign treaties, if you understand them before you sign them.”
NEW: If you’re waking up you’ve missed a truly sensational by election result.
Lib Dems GAIN Chesham and Amersham. It’s been Conservative since 1974. It had a Tory majority of 16000+. Now a Lib Dem maj of *8028*.
That’s a swing to the Lib Dems of 25.2%.
Keir Starmer: "What a joke. Even now as the latest mealy-mouthed apology stumbles out of one side of his mouth, a new set of deflections and distortions pour from the other. But the damage is already done. The public has made up their mind. They don't believe a word the PM says."
Extraordinary briefing from MPs after the 1922 committee tonight, all of it describing the mood ranging from terrible to abysmal. Sort of stuff you’d expect in a premiership in its dying days, after years, not in its second month.
A Labour MP texts: “Thrilled. For the first time in ten years we’ve got a leader who looks like a prime minister. In fact, we’ve got a leader who looks more like a prime minister than the prime minister does.”
Former Conservative Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind: “He was always unfit to be Prime Minister and a lot of people knew that right from the very beginning.”

One of the most unappealing aspects of the current crisis is the judgmental censoriousness we’re seeing on here and in more everyday life. I went past several parks today. Everyone I saw was enjoying them responsibly. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a big house and garden.
Rishi Sunak: “Everyone knows I’m in favour of maths to 18. Keir Starmer makes me think I should introduce it to 61.”
Keir Starmer: “if the Prime Minister were so good at maths he’d know I’m 60, not 61.”
The situation
London and the south east cut off from rest of the country
UK outward freight to Calais cut off
UK travel prohibited for a swathe of countries
More cases reported in last 24 hours than ever before

11 days til the transition ends
A country which hasn't had much attention but which is really interesting is Greece
old population?-check. multi-generational households?-check. weakened state?-check
Yet they've had 2,207 cases and only 105 deaths.
Common theme of countries like this was taking action v early
Been speaking to several London frontline doctors working in major hospitals. Picture isn’t great. One: “it’s a bit like a warzone. I’d say not far off where we were at in first wave in terms of capacity. But staff are completely demoralised and exhausted this time round.”
Forget the spin and the other letters. The story of the night is that Boris Johnson has sent the letter and asked for an extension, after saying he never ever would.
One of the many problems for PM is the quotes are endless. On 8th December, after Allegra Stratton resigned he told the House “I apologise for the impression that has been given that staff in Downing St take this less than seriously. I’m sickened myself and furious about that.”
.
@AngelaRayner
closing Labour Conference: “From the party of stability to causing earthquakes. From the party of business to a slapdown from the IMF. From the party of serious govt to the party of parties. Liz Truss has even crashed the pork market. Now. THAT. is. A disgrace."
The prime minister just said she thinks the message from voters on Brexit in the local elections was simple: “just get on with it.”
If that’s the case why would they have turned to parties who, quite literally, don’t want to get on with it?
Central problem
-if as DC said, he had no symptoms and his wife didn’t have Covid symptoms, why go to Durham in such haste?
-if neither were sure they had Covid, it wasn’t an exceptional circumstance- so no travel.
- if they suspected Mrs C had Covid-was against rules to travel.
Starmer on Boris Johnson: “Yet again the Prime Minister waited until the 11th hour to take this decision...he did what he always does: dismissed the challenge, ruffled his hair, made a flippant comment."
We can have a debate about the quality of university courses. But the first question to a politician advocating fewer kids go to university is to ask them where they went/where their kids go/went. Too often they’re not talking about themselves or their kids, but someone else’s.
Explains a fair bit of British political history that Labour can turn the day after one of their biggest ever victories to a period of nervy self-incrimination and the Conservatives can quietly move on from two of their worst ever defeats, and convince everyone it wasn’t too bad.
Over the last 24hrs the UK has received donations of PPE from Turkey and ventilators from Germany. When the dust settles, one of the many big questions to be answered will be why this charity was necessary and how Britain can avoid being in such an exposed position in the future.
The police were already staring down the barrel of a potentially profound crisis of confidence, especially among women. That just got worse. Parliament is going to demand answers on Monday and ministers almost certainly before that.
Conservative MP Roger Gale: “This has all the makings of a Whitehall farce made in Scotland Yard...unless there’s a legal barrier to Sue Gray publishing her report it should be published now and in full.”
Overheard in a Newcastle cafe, two very despondent students, clearly not long arrived in the city: “I might as well just go home. What is the point in being here? I told my Mum last night, I just feel so lonely. Wish I’d taken a gap year.” The other nodded, in sad agreement.
Wow. Theresa May appointed Sedwill and was a huge advocate of him. Nonetheless this is quite the intervention. May increasingly going from loyal backbencher to Ted Heath with no intervening period whatsoever.
Serious. Tory MP William Wragg accuses govt whips and No 10 of blackmail and breaking ministerial code. Says they’ve threatened to withdraw investment from MPs’ constituencies if they support no confidence. Also threatened with negative press stories.
Yesterday the general assumption was that anything over 200-250 seats would be a poor result for the Conservatives. They’re currently on 320 losses. It’s been a poor night indeed for them: hovering around some of the party’s worst performances in the last ten years.
From a care home manager: “What a lot of rubbish. I didn’t get any support until March 23rd and they were just feeble emails. Then the local authority got their act together 2nd week in April. And the advice is still conflicting even today from CQC, CCG and PHE.”
"Right from the start we've tried to throw a protective ring around our care homes. We set out our first advice in February... we've made sure care homes have the resources they need" says Health Secretary, Matt Hancock.

ITV says this image is from 13th November 2020.
On 8th December 2021 Catherine West asked Boris Johnson in the Commons “whether there was a party in Downing St on 13th Nov?”
PM: “No. But but I’m sure whatever happened the guidance... and the rules were followed at all times.”
NEW: I understand that Durham County Council will shortly announce that they will be looking at "all possible options" to appeal the Valuation Office Agency's decision not to backdate council tax for Dominic Cummings' NE home.
John Keefe of Eurounnel says actual service running well but: “Everyone has to realise there are now different types of border controls so the time it takes to get through the border is longer- that’s a function of the UK being a third country to the EU.”
Will be plenty who sympathise with the PM’s message that it would be wrong to change the rules at this late stage before Christmas. But many British Muslims will probably raise an eyebrow, given that for millions rules were changed only hours ahead of Eid earlier this year.
Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of the Burka, it says a lot about what’s wrong with British society that Boris Johnson’s father and sister have both (with ease) been able to write columns defending him in the Sunday newspapers this morning. And we just think that’s normal.
NEW: London Mayor Sadiq Khan responds to Lee Anderson
"Racism is racism. I'm unclear why Rishi Sunak and members of his cabinet aren't condemning this...the message it sends is, Muslims are fair game when it comes to racism."
Angela Eagle to Boris Johnson: “If the PM needs a Met Police inquiry to tell him whether he attended a party on 13th November in his own Downing St flat, why should we believe he's a fit and proper person to have his hand on the button of our independent nuclear deterrent?”
I loved watching the Supreme Court today and I couldn’t quite figure out why. And then I realised. It was like the grown ups were in charge again. It’s been a long while.
Have received scores of messages from downgraded students. Here are a few. Firstly, David. He goes to an FE college in Gateshead. He's the first in his family to go to uni.

NEW: Broadcast union
@bectu
which represents many BBC staff says: “This is a deeply concerning decision from the BBC…taken with the ongoing controversy over the appointment of the BBC chairman…it risks given the impression of double standards on these issues.”
Starmer: “I promise this- a politics which treads a little lighter on all our lives. That’s the thing about populism or nationalism…It needs your full attention, needs you constantly focussing on this week’s common enemy. And that’s exhausting.”
Really interesting section.
What we've seen just now is a humiliation for Truss and govt but more than anything else it is a humbling day for Britain. Take out the personalities, and the UK's govt has been forced to change its economic policy and its finance minister by the markets. It will be remembered.
Keir Starmer: “May I welcome the new Cabinet to their places. A chancellor who accepted a job from the PM on Wednesday afternoon and told him to quit on Thursday morning. A new Northern Ireland Sec who once asked if he needed a passport to get to Derry.”
The centrepiece of the Cummings testimony underlines the problem. Mr Cummings’ child ended up in a Durham hospital. DC said that he was concerned he would end up there too. This is what the authorities wanted to avoid and why people were urged to stay in their primary residence.
Strange echoes of months ago. In February the PM was forced to choose between his Chancellor and Mr Cummings. He chose Mr Cummings. It could be said tonight that he had to choose between the credibility of his public health strategy and Mr Cummings. Again, he chose the latter.
@sophielouisecc
Hi Sophie! I’ve simply pointed out that something I reported on and which was dismissed as scaremongering by some who advocated Brexit turns out to have happened. As you know, it’s far from an isolated example. Sorry if you find that inconvenient.

Chloe Smith, Conservative MP for Norwich North announces she’s standing down at next elections n. Majority of just over 4500. She’s only 40. No 10 will twitch. If a series of young Tory MPs in marginal seats announce their exit, it sends a very clear signal…
