The case for Remain is fabulous. We stay with our friends, we prosper, our children are free to roam & learn across a continent where our grandparents fought for exactly that. Why is nobody making this case?
It's sad the UK is not a part of the EU, sad no British MEPs there today to cheer Zelensky, sad we have been so diminished by Brexit. We have left a superpower. What for?
If a Labour Prime Minister and Labour Chancellor were on holiday during an economic crisis like this the Daily Mail, Telegraph, Express, Sun et al would have helicopters with cameras over their vacation homes.
I edited your paper in that era Harry and don’t recognise this as fact at all. The
@maitlis
speech tonight was entirely right, Brexit could not have happened without liars and charlatans being given the oxygen of unchallenged publicity.
Funny how there were no posh telly crowd speeches decrying the fact the entire BBC strategy was for many years set by a Gordon Brown-era Labour Cabinet Minister who sat on this hallowed BBC Board.
The PM lost the moral authority to impose lockdown when he failed to fire Cummings. That decision is one of the great-post war errors by a sitting Prime Minister: people will die who would have lived.
The way to avoid a border in Ireland is to have an overall UK-EU trade deal based on mutual recognition of standards, veterinary checks etc. Those are the talks we ought to be holding. The delay is not on Britain’s side.
Speaker getting one of the biggest kickings in Fleet Street history tonight... but it is these papers that created this mess, not him. They misled readers and led them to disaster.
Dominic Cummings skillfully manipulated the media yesterday, creating a fake news brawl around Matt Hancock and then attacking the BBC: All to take attention away from a child on the floor of a hospital. It worked and won the day. But why are current editors allowing this?
I’ve been shocked at two dinners recently when Tories of influence have told me privately “Varadkar isn’t bright” and “the Irish will blink” and it seems, amazingly, that this is the actual policy of HMG under Johnson. They are anti-Irish, arrogant, dangerous and wrong.
When white middle aged men just sweep aside
@DavidLammy
like this I fear we lack humility to see what it is like, being black, watching the march of the Right.
#Marr
: "That was an unacceptable comparison, wasn't it?"
Lammy: "Andrew, I would say that that wasn't strong enough"
Labour MP David Lammy defends his choice of language around the Conservative Party’s ERG
#Brexit
The BBC, which I love, has sadly enabled Brexit by giving liars and fools equal time with the smart and informed. Even now
@BBCr4today
is at it.
@peston
is quite right to say the crisis we are heading for is akin to a “wartime” disaster. The UK media failed the country.
If I was still editing The Sun I’d back a People’s Vote on tomorrow’s front page, head to Heathrow and throw my iphone out the car. Sometimes doing the right thing beats the big bucks. 🇬🇧🇪🇺
Few understand this, but the air cover Tories get from Mail, Sun, Telegraph, Express acts as a multiplier of lies - and a giant comfort blanket - but
@EdwardJDavey
@Keir_Starmer
,
@NicolaSturgeon
face a battalion of bollocks daily. The gap is immense.
Britain has turned from love to hate, from light to dark and thrown away the legacy our grandparents won in the air, at sea and on the land in the '39-'45 war.
I can easily name ten, maybe as many as 20 UK political journalists who must have known or should have known about this Johnson party. Their editors would fire them. Except some of these mates of Boris are editors. It will all in tears. Ours.
Macron is right. Message to every Brexit editor: he is talking about YOU. What a total and unmitigated disaster much of the UK press has led its readers to.
Keir Starmer was totally cleared by Durham Police yet the Daily Mail quite disgracefully suggests that decision was somehow ‘politically motivated” and that “he (Keir) piled on pressure” on that force. This is poisonous polemic.
We've lost all self-awareness as a country and I'm afraid parts of UK media have too. Brexit's obvious disaster is our fault, not Macron's. If you voted Leave you are complicit. You were fooled.
David Gauke is that rare thing in UK politics right now: brave and alone, putting country before party and, critically, operating outside the support of the UK newspaper editors, many of whom will attack him. Kudos to David. Kudos to his supporters. The historians are watching.
Fascinating why a young Keir Starmer broke left and Rishi Sunak broke right in their formative years: In the end the Labour leader wanted to help society and those that cannot help themselves. Sunak wanted the power and the glory. That is the difference between us and them.
How on earth can
@BBCNews
lead on the devastating IMF report but fail to mention Brexit once? The entire world knows why we are collapsing, we built a wall between the UK and our biggest market, customers and labour force… world can see this, why can’t we?
History will ask why so many UK Press barons allowed and encouraged editors to tell lies to create Brexit - enabling an act of immense national self-harm.
About turn! Make no mistake, Paul Dacre has lost the internal argument with Jonathan Rothermere… the Mail titles have today suddenly turned on Johnson. Tory MPs, especially the new and naive ones, may not realise what this means…. It means he is finished….
Brexit has corrupted a generation of journalists, not all of them of course, but many - they have lost the ability to tell right from wrong, up from down.
FACT: Brexit causes the Dover queues not the French who are just checking passports. FACT: Brexit is a wall with the EU, our biggest trading partner. FACT: We can't travel or trade now without friction, delay, cost. FACT: Whole world is laughing.
This bankrupt party meeting in Birmingham created Brexit to 'save' themselves and, in doing so, destroyed the UK's global standing for a generation. Never forget, never forgive.
I don't want to pay less tax,
@KwasiKwarteng
, I want to pay better tax. Do not assume all higher rate Brits only think of their bank balances. This Mini Budget is heartless, abysmal, suicidal.....
What
@carolecadwalla
has been arguing, astonishing as it might seem, is that areas of the media in the US and UK have unwittingly been ‘working for Putin’ for quite some time. Electing Trump, assisting Brexit, promoting climate change denial, promoting anger and division…
The Daily Mail blinked, Truss is toast, just LOOK 👀 how they changed their front page between editions….. wow, wow, wow……this was between 11pm and midnight….
Johnson was looking to please his powerful backers in Fleet Street by saying Keir Starmer prosecuted ‘journalists and not Jimmy Savile.’ But it is untrue. A lie. Pub talk. I can guess who whispered this to him though….
MAGICMONDAYGATE: Clear now that Thursday’s UK front pages represent the worst communications error in this country of the entire pandemic. This was briefed in total contrast to public interest and reality. It should be investigated.
‘Hypocrite’ they cry! Daily Mail pays Boris Johnson £1m… he buys £3.8M weekend mansion…. Same paper “exposes” Angela Rayner for buying a £48,000 council house… they pay Johnson £48,000 every 18 days……
It would be nice if the partisan and hugely bitter British newspaper industry bowed and saluted the BBC. And ceased trying to tear apart an essential part of the fabric of Britain.
Can a single member of the Conservative Party or any of their supporters in the media name a single thing we have gained as a country form Brexit to balance wrecking the economy and destroying our global standing?
What? Excuse me? The responsibility for murdering this lovely girl and impressive wife lies solely and absolutely with him. Not with his wife's achievement....
Large parts of the British press have failed the country and their readers by failing to explain the inevitable disastrous economic consequences of Brexit. If they had we would have remained.
In my experience politicians often privately buy newspaper cartoons poking fun at them. None of the below pictured will purchase Peter Brookes this morning. His cartoon shames them, SHAMES them. And they should be ashamed.
The UK imports 80pc of our food, mostly from EU, the red tape Brexit has put on that trade has sent prices up. We therefore have 12 to 15pc inflation in food inputs. If you voted to leave the EU you voted for this.
If I'd have been editing The Sun in Brexit war the paper would have backed Remain purely because of peace in the island of Ireland. The English Brexit editor class - including Boris - either didn't care or didn't listen. This is a disgrace.
This man is an xenophobic idiot. Germany is our friend and ally. The war is now history and what the Germans have achieved since then is admirable. Our enemy is ignorance and men like Mark Francois.
Mark Francois on BBC just now accused Airbus's Tom Enders of "Teutonic arrogance", adding: "My father, Reginald Francois, was a D-Day veteran. He never submitted to bullying by any German. Neither will his son. So if Mr Enders is watching, that's what he can do with his letter"
When Fleet Street attacks ‘wokery’ it shows itself utterly out of touch with the new generation, with business and contemporary thought. Being ‘woke’ just means being alive to others, alive to new ideas, alive to the plight of the world.
I wish
@thehuwedwards
well. The Sun inflicted terror on Huw despite no evidence of any criminal offence. This is no longer a BBC crisis, it is a crisis for the paper. Huw's privacy must now be respected. Social media also needs speedy reform.
The real story behind the Charles’ Qatari cash ‘Exclusive’ is who in Downing Street leaked what was a well known fact at Private Secretary level and above to the press in ‘revenge’ for Rwanda. We will know one day.
Cost of Brexit quite clear to see in the GDP comparisons - good that
@BBCNews
10 and
@ITV
10 told it as it is tonight. The country has made a huge error and this is now crystal clear.
FACTS: We are a country hopelessly obsessed with the 39=45 War, a nation of ‘War Cabinets’ and Dads Army tropes. The EU (incl Germany & Ireland) are our friends, neighbours and biggest trading partners; Europe is our home not our enemy. We are a country adrift....
Overnight results show that, not since the 1930s, has the British popular press been so out of touch with the British people. The proprietors’ agenda is not the people’s agenda.
James Slack needs to clarify or resign as deputy editor of The Sun. How on earth can he have kept this out of the paper? Who else attended his leaving do in Downing Street and kept quiet? How many editors? How many in the lobby?
An important detail - in terms of collusion between large chunks of the media and the Tory government - is one of the partygoers here was James Slack, then Boris Johnson's director of communications, formerly of the Mail - and now The Sun's deputy editor.
Brexit has destroyed freedom of movement and therefore the UK labor market - directly causing NHS crisis, A&E and ambulance queues. We warned, the Brexit press did not care and now ignores this truth.
#Kwexit
is coming:
@KwasiKwarteng
will have to go, no country’s finance minister can remain if the market has no confidence. I know this sounds extreme. Watch this space.
Why is most of the coverage of the poor people in boats in the channel from OUR point of view not the point of view of those desperate men, women and CHILDREN? Where is our compassion at Christmas?
The coverage of Carrie Johnson is a case study in how UK media tears apart some people (Meghan, Lineker, Starmer, Coogan, Grant as in Hugh, Gina Miller) and lionises others, indulging them as if they were on some kind of pedestal. It’s a peculiarity. It is just bizarre.
The Leave Campaign has now been exposed as failing the law and failing the truth. This is a major news story and a national scandal. It negates the first referendum.
Macron is absolutely correct. Brexit is a lie sold to the vulnerable and cannot work. It never could. We are Europeans being robbed of our Passports not Brits getting “our country back.”
Britain is at peak tabloid. We have a tabloid Prime Minister rolling out tabloid policies for tabloid editors - who, by the by, never hired him back in the day because Rupert Murdoch’s
@thetimes
fired him for making stuff up!
Zelensky is now a global hero, which makes fact Donald Trump's attempt to blackmail him resulted in his first impeachment hearing is news. Please can more editors look back at this?
Boris Johnson’s Savile slur on Keir Starmer was a disgrace for many reasons. Firstly it is false. A lie. But it was also aimed at pleasing newspaper editors because it was about the CPS’ pursuit of journalists - he was virtue signalling to his peer group.
Any economics editor that reports on UK's uniquely grim outlook who does not reference Brexit as a prime reason is either a coward - or a just not up to the job. Rest of world just laughing at us. We self harmed. We can't face it.
Has a single Brexit editor or columnist had the humility or self awareness to admit they have led their readers to the brink of total disaster? Or will they blame everybody else?
Make no mistake, the Mail's pernicious attack on the privileges committee today is up there with 'enemies of the people.' This is dangerous, anti-democratic, dark and nasty.
People wondering why Downing Street announced Carrie’s pregnancy on February 29 need to understand it was to divert attention away from the Priti Patel scandal as her Perm Sec quit that day very publicly. This is partly why pregnancy seems “short.”
Mick Lynch is the best communicator of 2022, for all the armies of advisers stacked against him, he wins with simplicity and honesty….. his use off words… his brevity… no matter what you think of his actual case.
It's all over for 'Lord' Paul Dacre: the Daily Mail has disgraced itself by backing Boris Johnson for so long - now the paper's reputation lies in ruins.
Brexit editors, knowing that being a Remainer meant a career cul-de-sac, colluded to con their readers. Already the trade issue and now migrant crisis show they lied to the country. Brexit is a disaster. Always was. What a scandal this is.....
I can attest, as a former tabloid editor, that Boris Johnson knew precisely what he was doing in his nasty, appalling column. He knows. The editors know. We all know. He is not fit to be PM.
Dominic Cummings dropped the word ‘cocaine’ into his Tweets a few days ago in the No10 context though he made no allegation. I never did coke but I learned in rehab that so many around me did…I was just too drunk to notice…will the Met be sniffing out that line too?
Simon Wolfson needs to take a long look at himself. He backed Brexit and now complains the labour market is not functioning. He was part of the disaster, part of the problem....
So glad men-of-the-people Boris Johnson (Eton), Rees-Mogg (Eton), Simon Wolfson (Radley) are fighting off ‘the elite’ to deliver utter disaster for an England I grew up in and they hardly know at all.
The Bannon story (Boris Johnson) is on front of
@FT
tomorrow but still not featuring on most broadcast I can see. Odd. Thank heavens for print which is leading this campaign whilst BBC (has to be said) flounders.
I’m sorry but the Mail on Sunday’s ridiculous attacks on the BBC are just becoming a joke. I’m keeping this one and will Tweet it in a year’s time, the Beeb will still be fine, Nadine won’t be at DCMS…. The BBC is NOT the story this weekend!
So many good friends in the UK newspaper business have told me they had to back Brexit as the bosses wanted it. The country was failed as a result. We are about to find out how badly.
Let’s not forget, this failed party meeting in Birmingham, they created Brexit for no reason, they failed to manage Covid, thousands died in care homes…. Never forget, never forgive…. They have lied and lied and lied.
Here’s a tip: Place unread copies of this weekend’s ridiculous flag-waving Brexit newspapers in a sealed bag and read them this time next year. They will look utterly mad. They are wrong on almost every single aspect of Brexit reality.
