Strong enough to boast about doing 115 on inclines but too weak to lift both volumes of Fields Virology onto a desk, open the covers, and do some light reading
If your comment back to me about saying that the impending approval of 5-11 yo Covid vaccination will save some lives is to argue that not many children have died, you’ve lost the argument
Excellent quote from

“The lack of insight into our history, the lack of insight into the value of vaccinations and the lack of insight into how vaccine policies work and why those policies exist — it’s stunning.”

Just going to say again that if you’re going to make massive claims about the transmission of ebolaviruses, you better damn well be bringing piles of data to back your claims. There are 46 years of experiences and historical data and the potential for panic
Dr. Fauci worked directly with Ebola virus disease patients in the Special Clinical Studies Unit at NIH; the President stared directly at a solar eclipse sans eye protection. I'll stick with Team Fauci

General public service announcement: viruses don’t care about ethnicity or international borders. Please keep this in mind as we struggle to deal with this outbreak
Probably as good a time as any to say that if you don’t want vaccine mandates, help us promote the hell out of vaccination to get numbers up so mandates aren’t required
@DrJenGunter
Viral load would be odd given the recent data from kids which didn’t correlate with increased disease severity. If I said that we’re looking into this conundrum would that provide any solace?
My daughter is two and would be able to verifiably say she had spent a large part of her life reading about Covid. She can’t read yet though so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I know a fair bit about COVID. I spent a fairly large part of my life reading research about COVID. And I'm a good reader—it's part of my job. I'm not doing any epidemiology on my own. The problem is that ACIP's recommendations on vaccine prioritization don't match the research.
Not going to weigh in on the politics surrounding tonight - not my area. Multiple generations in this area of 🇨🇦 have spent years sitting at tables adorned with Ukrainian cross-stitch and hearing stories about the old country. This is an emotional time

Just a reminder that Omicron is a newly identified VOC of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This is not a new virus nor has COVID become Omicron
Haven’t posted a lot on COVID the past week nor accepted a lot of interviews. It’s 100% not because the concern is gone and we’re through the other side of the pandemic yet (short 🧵)
@TheRickWilson
This could be a historical global health game changer if the data holds up in larger populations. But this early data is quite promising
Just getting this message out, if you come across the following message about the new SARS-CoV-2 variants -
🚨☢️🎅🦠🤢🤮☠️🪦☢️🚨
- please keep in mind that the biological consequences of these mutations are not yet know
There’s a lot of discussion on third doses and the need for these given what we’re learning about Omicron. But can we also appreciate that we absolutely need to increase access to first and second doses globally?
As we continue to hear more “living with the virus” narrative, it would seem appropriate that this also includes living with the potential for new VOC emergence and need for fluid and actionable responses

Systematic silencing? Every day a plethora of us science types are on here correcting AVer disinformation with facts. Correcting falsehoods is not silencing. Not by a long shot
Definitely feel like I’ve made it now that the customs official looked at my passport and said “I know you. You’ve been on the news talking about coronavirus”.

For those that are still arguing that herd immunity is a viable option for Covid: The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority says Winnipeg’s ICU capacity is at 96 percent as of 11:30 a.m. Saturday
I’m actually befuddled that there’s still even any debate at this point. It’s the start of June and we’re still struggling globally with multiple variants of concern and not enough vaccines

Overall a soft and gummy bite, often with a faint bouquet of fermented grain. Near-prehensile lips make the whole experience rather cute. Only downside is the painful accompanying headbutt. 4/5 stars.
If you have exactly zero papers in virology or virus evolution, it might come across a bit baffling if you’re critiquing whether a world renown virologist is deserving of an award for their work in virology
I’ll add one additional comment here. My genuine frustration is that the certainty of these statements creates panic when we don’t need it and discredits decades of experience. We just went through this with the monkeypox virus claims in transmission and schools
Seems like a good time to say:
I.a. Get vax doses out to the populations overrepresented in current MPX cases
I.b. Engage community leaders to help with messaging
II. Get vax out to HCWs
III. Get vax clinics rolling at sexual health clinics
IV. Get vax to endemic regions!!!

Rapid tests have their limitations but they are a helpful tool for reducing risk to my community. It’s shameful negligence that the US is just getting that this should be a priority.

The Sputnik V vaccine Ad5 vector is evidently replication competent. The makers apparently neglected to delete E1, so getting this vaccine means being infected with live adenovirus 5.

The Covid test positivity rate in the US is 9.5%. That's nearly double the rate the WHO says should lead regions to consider not lifting containment measures and not reopening schools and some businesses. I'm scared to think how much worse this could get over the next 73 days.
Canada just announced it’ll provide the new Covid vaccine to every Canadian who wants it — for free.

So, keep making behavioural choices that help ⬇️risk for those around us & appreciate that “high risk” doesn’t fit neatly into one category. When we talk about protecting the vulnerable, let’s make damn sure that we’re talking about all vulnerabilities

As total US COVID-19 fatalities pass 119,000, some additional numbers from past respiratory virus pandemics (source CDC):
2009 H1N1: 12,469
1968 H3N2: ~100,000
1957 H2N2: 116,000
1918 H1N1: 675,000
So, less than1918 so far...sure. Worse than other influenza pandemics...yup
