My peers dunk on euro poverty and underproductivity, caused by the โmandatory leisureโ there. But thereโs something to be said for that.
A culture and legal system which punishes people for trying to get ahead of their peers by not taking any time off may be good in the long run
@liz_love_lace
Insane how pregnant stray cats always go up to some unsuspecting human and gain access to their home right before they give birth. Itโs an observed phenomenon. How do they know
I like how this is only believable if youโve never actually seen how โlow talentโ students interact with โhigh talentโ ones lol

โWe need lots of immigrants because the native-born have low fertilityโ
Do the immigrants maintain high fertility?
โNo they fall to native levels within 1 generationโ
Do the immigrants lighten the debt/care load on future smaller generations?
โNo they increase itโ
Oh ok cool
Remember, "lawyer" is actually two distinct professions
Attorneys have a salary chart that's just... ludicrously bimodal
On the left is the majority lump of lawyers handling the criminal justice system and almost every other quotidian law job
On the right is the biglaw cartel
Kinda wild how a few decades ago the USA just locked up an insane number of criminals to fight crime and it totally worked. It actually worked so well that we all forgot why it was done in the first place.
What anarchists *really* want: To be the underbelly of a functional society
They dont want power, or to rule; they *dont want to win.* They want to be a barely-tolerated minority of ๐ธ๐๐๐ guys, while 1950s USA actually does all the work, gives them welfare & plays straightman
Urbanists unwilling to tackle crime are just play-acting
Vagrants deter transit use more than frequency
Violent streets deter pedestrians more than โthe car lobbyโ
Bike thefts deter cycling more than infrastructure
Crime is what caused suburbanization in the first place
Itโs like I always say
Northern universities are hedge funds with a vestigial school attached
Southern universities are sports franchises with a vestigial school attached
Western universities are immigration visa laundering facilities with a vestigial school attached
Universities are funny. Hey what if we took a medieval institution for training priests and aristocrats and combined it w a hedge fund, sports franchise and resort for teenagers
Oh and it'll be the backbone for fundamental research for our entire civilization
Iโve said it many times, the future is in *curation.* Trust and reputation are coming back in a big way. You will never buy anything without a recommendation from a trusted guide again, else woe betide thee.
Curation, walled gardens, small groups under centralized systems, trust
The npr stuff sucks because I really do miss this
Itโs not just that itโs โgone wokeโ or anything, npr has obviously always skewed left
Itโs that the monomaniacal obsession with the most trite, overdone topics has completely drowned all the interesting niches it used to explore
โAfter graduation I was rejected from every prestigious design firm, but I received an offer from a satellite village of Herat, Afghanistan to overhaul an enterprising political groupโs brand identity. Pay was substandard but cost of living was low and the exposure - unbeatable.โ
The inscription on this 17th-century sword reads: "When I raise this sword, so I wish that this poor sinner will receive eternal life."
It displays a better understanding of Christian forgiveness than most people now.
Tangentially related: The Godfather Part II isnโt just a significantly worse film than The Godfather, (a masterpiece,) but itโs actually just a straight-up bad film.
If it was made today it wouldโve been a cash-grab TV series dropped on Hulu or something. Fanservice crap.
My peers dunk on euro poverty and underproductivity, caused by the โmandatory leisureโ there. But thereโs something to be said for that.
A culture and legal system which punishes people for trying to get ahead of their peers by not taking any time off may be good in the long run
To gauge the rate of all property crime, use auto theft.
To gauge the rate of all violent crime, use homicide.
Both have more or less 100% report rates, because the cops canโt ignore a corpse or a stolen car.
Reporting rates distort numbers for virtually all other crimes.
Car theft directly affects average people and their sense of safety. It also is reliably detected because cars are insured and the victims need to report the crime, while Walmart doesn't have any urgency to submit a police report for every stolen item they'll never recover.
When people say being a lawyer doesn't pay off, they mean for the left lump. Because it doesn't. The biglaw cartel (and it is a cartel) gets you paid, even if they work you near to death along the way.
Important to understand this. There's lawyers, and then there's lawyers.
Americaโs prisons are an utter disgrace.
Activists get this wrong, they say that America is overly carceral, that we imprison too many people. This is the opposite of the truth, we donโt imprison enough people.
The problem is that American prisons are hellholes.
Archaeologists: Yea our field SUCKS. Itโs BORING. We do SPREADSHEETS and DIVERSITY STATEMENTS for GRANT APPLICATIONS. Weโre nothing like Indiana Jones, weโre more like NED. FUCKING. FLANDERS.
Also archaeologists: hey why donโt we have any grant money or interested students
This is why any criticism of anarchists revolving around their "plans for the future" or how they "would actually govern society" bounces right off
They don't want to govern, they have no plans. If you gave them power for free theyd refuse it. (Makes sense.) So don't even bother
There's also a tiny 3rd tier beyond this, but they're not really lawyers. They're the elite personnel who happen to have JDs.
The left lump is State University School of Law grads
The biglaw cartel is from the top ~25 law schools
That 3rd tier went to Yale and its 3/4 peers
This is what the โdeep stateโ actually means btw. Nothing intrinsically sinister, just the automatic, self-powered, undirected machinery of the administrative state which will continue to move as before unless acted upon by a great force
I used to think that the UK was weird for having two different professions, Solicitor and Barrister, that we Americans group together into โLawyerโ, but looking at that two-peaked graphโฆ makes sense.
@akeion98
If working more than your neighbor will ~always result in a significantly better quality of life, then a lot will. This means high productivity, but also means a very low level of leisure time across board
This may have negative externalities (stress, accidents, fertility, etc)
Far-right account here was doxxed as a former professor, so of course I immediately checked for student reviews of him and theyโre actually kind of adorable lol
To respond to the comments:
1. Iโm obviously not suggesting total social segregation
2. Iโm obviously talking about Middle/High School, not Elementary
3. Itโs obviously good for students to have peers who will challenge them, but at a certain delta itโs ineffective
This hat, as with all forms of unorthodox clothing, works just fine if you fully commit. Iโve known big men with Aran sweaters wear this well because they fully lean into being THAT kind of guy.
If you wear it with a t-shirt and cargo shorts, itโll look bad b/c youโre a coward
Left-Europhilia is almost dead. The neolibs have pivoted to American triumphalism, and the hard left can no longer bear even a whiff of whiteness in its ideals. Only some left-urbanists and socdems still admire the old world.
Yet old reflexive Right-Europhobia is still dominant.
There is nothing more beautiful to an anarchist than a failed revolution.
Death on the barricades, hurling a molotov under the black flag, the object of anarchist desire. They want to be cut down by fascists while they set tyrannical institutions ablaze. Victory would be a shame
1. Ellis Island era immigration did profoundly reshape America. Imagine if NYC was still majority Anglo/Dutch/German.
2. America hated that era so much they passed draconian anti-imm. laws.
3. We now, officially, have a higher rate of imm. than we did at peak Ellis Island era.
They weren't "replacing" you when they came off the boat at Ellis Island.
They aren't "replacing" you by coming over the Rio Grande.
America was built by immigrants.
Each of us is a descendant of one.
Reject the voices that tell you somehow today "it's different."
It's not.
Pro-choice people sometimes say stuff like "well if the FETUS is a BABY in the womb, shouldn't CHILD SUPPORT start then???"
and I've never known any pro-life person to say anything other than "yea sure, that'd be good"
Pro-Life Deadbeat Father is an oddly persistent made-up guy
Yea honestly this might be the single biggest economic problem for the United States in the medium term
One of our two major parties is hostile to free enterprise for quasi-religious reasons, and the other is beholden to a class of rent-seeking middlemen
Whatโs the esoteric significance of mankind being able to predict great events above the earth (eg eclipses) but not being able to predict great events beneath the earth (eg earthquakes)
Itโs absolutely shameful how many men are killed, raped, assaulted, and injured in our prisons. And itโs a disgrace how lightly this is taken.
Iโm not asking for Scandinavian Club Feds, Iโm saying prisoners deserve to be safe from bodily harm.
@SwannMarcus89
They seem a bit dim, but it actually is a minor struggle to buy groceries for cooking for one. Feels like youโre always either
A. running out of something,
B. throwing things out that went bad, or
C. eating a very monotonous diet
One of the best parts of a relationship tbh
Ok, to clear up confusion - the chart is for first-year placements and itโs several years old. Look less at the specific numbers and more at the general shape.
The fact that third world immigrant fertility plummets upon contact with western modernity undoes a funny horseshoe myth

But half of America thinks that jailbirds deserve rape and murder, while the other half thinks the only solution is to just set them free.
Fedgov should take over state prisons, drastically increase the number of facilities and staff, and institute strict new codes of conduct.
A lot of people think this image is beautiful. You know who those people are? Germans and Mongols (the same people really)
This unholy lack of geometry is terrifying to me. I need fractal coastlines and forests and mountains
Americaโs prisons are an utter disgrace.
Activists get this wrong, they say that America is overly carceral, that we imprison too many people. This is the opposite of the truth, we donโt imprison enough people.
The problem is that American prisons are hellholes.
All of this needs to be paired with a major crackdown on crime, mass arrests nationwide.
Unfortunately, โViolating states rights, spending mad money making prisons humane, and then doubling the inmate populationโ is a policy which appears to be convincing to like twelve people.
They need to investigate every single breach of conduct and savagely punish those responsible, whether violent inmates or negligent staff. Prison rape should be a one way ticket to the death chamber. Severe negligence on the part of wardens should have criminal repercussions.
Itโs boring, itโs banal, itโs just intoning the holy words that weโve all heard a million times before but that they now believe is necessary to do to honor their stillborn faith
Utterly disposable
Big thing about transit that everyone intuitively gets but that experts are obligated to pretend isnโt real:
***Everyone thinks, deep down, that busses are for poor people, while trains are for everyone.***
Dont try to deny or rationalize it. Just accept it and act accordingly.
@couchbod
I simplified for brevity, but the dreaded โwhite flightโ was actually the flight of everyone - of every race - who could afford to escape the dizzying rates of crime which erupted in the late 50s - 60s in northern cities following massive southern migration (white and black)
@MilanistaKaleb
Unfortunately the solution isnโt so easy.
The # of people who are in prison for possession charges alone are actually very few, and in these cases, itโs ~always the result of pleading down from more serious charges
The vast majority of inmates did terrible things to get there
@romerhimbin
Nope. I'm just trying to explain the mentality which leads actual socialists and right-wingers alike to pull their hair out in frustration when dealing with these people.
Iโve been told many times at this point that the square script the new logo is based on is actually an ancient Kufic style. Very cool! You donโt need to tell me again.
Anarchists literally feel completely fine with stealing from libraries or scamming government programs. โAnarchismโ isnโt a theory of society or governance itโs just being a bad person.

Cope. Americans cared about our cities very much. We loved them. Yes we built wonders like New York, but even little county seats were loved like imperial capitals.
Our cities were destroyed in a shameful, forgotten struggle in the mid 20th century. We paved over the battlefield
He's correct. Americans do not care about their cities, and that is why they are so mediocre given their wealth.
What Americans do care about is their suburbs, and they built the greatest suburbs in the whole world.
A lot of good books were written from ~2004-2010 about culture, demographics, etc but theyโre all tainted by this bizarre fear of Evangelicals which seems utterly quaint today.
No one really predicted the bottom falling out, mass secularization, and the post-religious new right.
I see lefty Christians often say that since we must love and forgive those who do wrong, we must also withhold the stateโs enforcement. This is wrong.
But just as ridiculous, and even more common, are rightists soaked with bloodlust and cruelty, relishing in hatred. Also wrong!
Genuinely one of the things that makes the West great is our tradition of not having house servants. I believe itโs deeply corrupting, and we see the rotten fruits in places like India where itโs common.
Immigrants like this weakening that norm (using lefty jargon) is dangerous.
If you want to live in a big mansion attended to by a gaggle of desperately poor underclass servants, thereโs entire *continents* where you can do that with impunity.
If you want to live in the greatest civilization the world has ever known, youโll do your own fucking dishes.
@wanyeburkett
His premise relies on the bizarre idea that it isn't obvious when someone is an illegal immigrant, or at least an immigrant.
My city has about two thousand phony 'asylum seekers'. It's pretty obvious who they are. It's all the people speaking Portuguese and African languages.
@Callicleez
Every r/askhistorians post looks like that. Only essay-length, heavily-sourced answers arenโt deleted. Otherwise itโs a graveyard of [deleted].
I like Strong Towns because while a significant portion of the Urbanist sphere has floated off into the stratosphere dreaming of total car bans and hive cities, ST stays true to the realistic, effective, and slightly boring world of actual American Urbanism.
Itโs fascinating how many actually think the value of housing is about the *building* and not the *land*
Theyโll see a big beautiful house in a very undesirable area and be genuinely astounded when itโs cheap. Theyโll see a shack in a hot city and be baffled when itโs expensive.
@Pasghetti45
A prosecutor? Then retake the LSAT until you get above a ~167 or so and go to your state university's law school on a full scholarship. Don't spend a dollar on your JD if you can help it.
Thereโs actually a pretty compelling case that the pro-fertility housing formula is essentially:
Cheap + detached + dense + short + walkable + mixed-use + ownership-based
Apartments are bad, but you donโt need McMansions. Just a home of your own, even if small and packed-in.
Quasi-experimental studies suggest that:
1) Free healthcare has no effect
2) Free education has partial/general equilibrium opposite signed effects
3) Daycare has small effects for money spent
4) More housing is good, but denser housing is likely quite bad
