KFC Twickenham have chosen a shopfront with traditional design elements over the usual betting shop aesthetic. A change of thinking at corporate level amongst high street chains would solve most of the poor shopfront designs blighting high streets.

The reason we have cills / sills that sit proud of a building is to prevent water running down buildings. Sounds an obvious thing to say but clearly it isn't being taught in architecture schools. Same truth applies to cornices and copings.

Public bike hangers are a useful addition to London. But why have we just silently accepted that they have to look like pig shelters on a farm? The home of the Routemaster, black cab and red telephone booth can do better than this pig-ugly eyesore, open a design competition.

Impressive new build in Balham, SW London. It matches the existing houses on both sides of the road. Besides the sharp edges, the only clue that it's new are the weep holes in the cavity walls.

And to extend the lesson that no longer gets taught, the small groove under a cill is called a drip and ensures that water drips off at that point rather than running back onto the building. Same principle applies to cornices and copings.

Do you wonder why new buildings just fall apart and leak? Spotted this on Instagram, architects are making stuff up as they go along and are celebrating it online. Young architects, spend time on building sites, learn tried and tested details rather.
