When I was in college at
@georgetown
, student activists set up a peace camp to oppose the Iraq war & it stayed up for 5 weeks. I spent a night at the camp in solidarity. Georgetown did not shut it down.
Students today should have the right to protest.
Does saying “go back to Gaza” count as anti-Palestinian hate? Are we going to get the President & other elected officials condemning the anti-Palestinian hate on college campuses? Does anyone in power care about the daily abuse hurled at Palestinian, Arab, and/or Muslim students?
I’m inside the Columbia campus now, and the pro-Israel crowd is yelling through the gates at students. “Stop wasting mommy and daddy’s money!” “You want to camp? Go camp in Gaza!” “Go back to Gaza!”
Camden County NJ weaponizes the IHRA definition of antisemitism to shut down a pre-approved, peaceful walkout including students who have lost family in Gaza. Yet we are told that the IHRA definition doesn't shield Israel. Does the fear & harm experienced by Palestinians matter?

1,200 Israeli deaths are mourned, enumerated, called "souls." 30,000+ Palestinian deaths, 13,000+ Palestinian children dead, every hospital bombed, mass starvation & famine, countless children orphaned and maimed undergoing amputations w/o anesthesia is just "what that lead to."
@rozina_ali
Very poor reflection on
@POTUS
and
@TheDemocrats
. Shows a disturbing level of dehumanization and disrespect for Palestinians, Muslims, and women of color.
I often think about Hind & the awful emergency call in which her 15 y/o cousin begs for help & then is killed by gunfire. Hind (6) picks up the call crying because everyone else in the car is dead & she’s injured. These are the horrors paid for by US tax $ w/
@POTUS

It has been 10 days since we have heard anything from our colleagues Youssef Zeino and Ahmed Al-Madhoon, the PRCS ambulance team who went to rescue 6-year-old Hind.
We want answers, we want the truth, we need the painful silence to end.
Help us find our team. Help us find Hind
As someone who has run for office as a Democratic candidate in a once Republican stronghold, I understand why some argue that New Jersey’s ballot line is good because it prevents infighting. I used to feel the same way. My time in state politics changed my mind. Here’s why (1/13)
It is wrong for NJ legislators to go on a trip sponsored by the Israeli government as bombs are dropping & killing 100 Palestinian children a day. NJ constituents are losing family. Thanks
@NJSpotlightNews
for giving those who object, myself included, a chance to explain concerns
@JillFilipovic
Biden has set the stage for this by repeatedly supporting the slanderous lie that these protests are based on hate. He has set the stage for all of the violence on campus & wants it to happen. If he called Gov. Hochul or Mayor Adams and told them not to do this they would listen.
@DrEricaJohnson
I think it’s a good thing and I could see myself writing that for men and women. Why devalue all the character strengths that we’ve characterized as too “feminine” ? I’d prefer to work with a thoughtful and considerate colleague over an arrogant self-centered jerk.

Dear supporters, it’s been an honor to serve as Assemblywoman. I’ve been proud to support legislation that serves the best interest of the public, including reproductive rights, gun safety, mental health, emergency services, transportation, worker rights, & language access (1/x)
This was a great week for representative & inclusive government! When I was sworn in as mayor of Montgomery Township in January 2019, I became the first South Asian woman to serve as mayor in New Jersey. This week, 3 amazing South Asian women have been sworn in as NJ mayors (1/2)
This is awful. I'm ashamed that the field of higher education in the US is ostracizing and abandoning Muslim students across the country.
@USC
owes this impressive young scholar an apology. I hope they change course and allow her to speak, an honor she earned as valedictorian.
USC has canceled the commencement speech of 2024 valedictorian Asna Tabassum, citing safety concerns. Asna says
@USC
gave no evidence of threats but noted that "anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian voices" have subjected her to "racist hatred." Her statement:
Today I was part of a group meeting w/ Rep. Sherrill’s office to discuss the need for ceasefire especially w/ Israeli bombing of Rafah where over 1 million people are sheltering. We asked her to vote “no” on more weapons to Israel & for UNRWA funding to to be reinstated (1/2)

Far too many Democratic Party leaders are more concerned with assuaging the concerns of a caricatured Republican voter than serving the needs and values of people who actually consistently vote Democratic
I am truly honored to have earned the support of the voters in the 16th district. I hope this inspires people from diverse backgrounds to get more involved in public service. I look forward to working with my colleagues to build a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous future
When I joined the legislature I was told to inform leadership if I planned to vote “no” in committee so I could be substituted w/ another member. Why is it considered beyond the pale to publicly vote no? Legislators should be there to represent the best interest of the public.
@CJGriffinEsq
@RabbleLowder
Yes, Gordon Johnson was on his way to Trenton when he was called and told he’s being substituted. This is an affront to one of the states premier and most diverse districts.
I’m proud to have been sworn in as mayor of Montgomery Township by NJ Attorney General Gurbir Grewal. Thank you to everyone for your support and I look forward to serving my community in this new role!
After careful consideration, I have decided not to seek re-election to the New Jersey General Assembly. At this time, I would like to focus on my work in higher education and spend more time with my family, especially my young daughter.
5 white dudes blocking a Latina Candidate from entering the event where there will be a "vote" to decide if their political group endorses her is so perfectly on the nose of everything that's wrong with NJ political machines & the County Line.
@DonaldNorcross
hope you're proud...
End of the line celebrations! Thank you to the many dedicated researchers, advocates, & organizers who struggled for years to give NJ voters a true choice & candidates a level playing field. I hope to see more young/ women/ minority/ working class candidates in the years to come.
Please read this courageous but terrifying resignation letter by Josh Paul, long time civil servant who resigned rather than sign off on Biden’s plan to escalate weapons shipments Israel. I beg people of conscience to speak out against this war
@jacobkornbluh
Come on
@SpeakerPelosi
this is absolutely pathetic. 75-80% of Democrats have consistently been shown to support a ceasefire and Israel was just found by the International Court of Justice to possibly be committing genocidal acts. Don’t insult the public with these baseless claims
I was proud to swear in Eman El-Badawi as mayor of Cranbury. It is wonderful to see diverse women leaders rise to leadership positions across NJ. Eman is of Indian & Egyptian descent. Best of luck to the inspiring Mayor El-Badawi in her new role! Cranbury is lucky to have you!
Were we supposed to consider Megyn Kelly a serious journalist at some point? She is hate and fear mongering simply at the sight of Muslim prayer. There have been prayers from many different religions at the protests. Contending with so much hate from so many sides is exhausting.
@AmiDar
I don’t think that’s true. The media is trying to cast this as one side or the other. The campus protests are about ceasefire, stopping the genocidal violence, and peace and justice for everyone. This is a peace movement.
Shameful.
@RepJoshG
stop targeting Palestinian, Arab & Muslim communities & allies who are already facing unimaginable trauma, pain, & stigma. The inhumanity of your consistent & biased attacks boggles the mind. I would hope a Congressman would have better things to focus on.
None of this represents the best interest of the public, nor does it strengthen Democratic leadership, nor is it true to the values of equity Dems celebrate. Yet, challenging the line is almost impossible. Power corrupts and the power of the party line is almost absolute. (13/13)
The male-dominated, racist environment in NJ politics is due in large part to the unique power NJ party leaders hold to decide the ballot (& most often the election). It weakens the Democratic Party & undermines candidates & elected officials being truly answerable to the public
It is only because of NJ's county party ballot line that Sen. Bob Menendez could withstand a primary challenge & win re-election in 2018 despite his unpopularity. The line is detrimental to NJ & in deciding positions as powerful as US Senate, is a national security threat (12/13)
@schock
@BKCHarvard
Thank you for sharing. We must record these peaceful protests and the bravery and humanity of students who persist in the face of unrelenting gaslighting from leaders, complicity of institutions, and use of tax money and tuition funds to support genocidal massacres in Gaza.
I just asked
@TammyMurphyNJ
at a meet and greet if she would call for a ceasefire in Gaza since she talks about how important it is to be a mother and 14,000 children have been killed. She said “we first of all have to remember Hamas is a terrorist organization” & (1/2)
I started to see that rather than strengthening Democratic leadership the county party ballot line weakens it by constraining candidates and electeds from speaking and voting as they wish. Public debate is frowned upon and decision making power is highly concentrated. (9/13)
The underfunding of public transit in NJ is a policy decision. This needs to change. Public transport is crucial lifeline for so many communities in NJ, especially those who are not wealthy.
🧵- I’m going to be the first to comment on this bc I know front office is preparing it. There is a major problem with Transit policy in NJ overall and it is unacceptable for NJTransit to push a large fare increase on regular residents within months of a massive tax break on the
“we need to bring the hostages home.”I said “for the sake of 100 hostages you think it’s ok to kill 30,000 people including 14,000 children? To bomb every hospital? To destroy every university? In Israel hostage families want ceasefire because bombs are killing hostages too”(2/2)
Women and people of color are often barely tolerated, disrespected, bandied about as decorations, easily switched out and kicked out, & can often only continue if they toe the line of the men who insist they are really in charge. It weakens our party rather than strengthening it.
@RepAndyKimNJ
What does this mealy-mouthed statement mean? You refuse to condemn police escalation & militarized reactions to protests taking place. You reiterate the lie that protests are motivated by anti-Jewish sentiment when many of the protestors are Jewish and you continue to arm Israel.
Oftentimes the ideas of wealthy, older, White men prevail. Legislation that in other states would be considered Republican is passed by Democrats (StayNJ, elections transparency act). Women are kicked off ballots & men inherit legislative seats from their fathers. (10/13)
@nbcsnl
@DavidKlion
Thankful for this message centering peace & humanity. We should all advocate a stop to the massacres, to free the people of Palestine, and to free all hostages. It’s not up to private citizens individually, but our political leaders should listen to the public. We demand peace.
Women are often treated differently & as obstacles. Once in the legislature, my peers praised me privately for being outspoken & challenging legislation, but they felt intense pressure not to speak or vote as they wanted. The ultimate threat is being tossed off the line. (8/13)
In 2019 I visited Dearborn Michigan & was awarded a key to the city by the mayor. Everyone was extremely kind & hospitable. Arab communities are a beautiful part of this diverse city. Sad to see
@WSJ
spread hate and fear. Anti-Arab & anti-Muslim hate have no place in our media.
This man wearing a green jacket was berating and harassing a halal cart vendor off 83rd and 2nd Ave in NYC. Does anyone know who this man is? Planning to report to the authorities.
Often during my campaign I felt & was told that my voice & issues didn't matter. When I tried to resist, I was told that candidates are "just cogs in the wheel" & “easily replaceable." That was v. demoralizing. I also saw how respect & deference are allocated to men with $ (7/13)
The
@DNC
’s abject failure to protect & support minority women like
@RepRashida
is absolutely shameful. It is a disgrace that members of Congress including
@RepJoshG
are co-signing a censure vote which is nothing more than an attempt to bully & silence a woman of color. Do better!
@GovMurphy
Glad you are calling for ceasefire & acknowledging the 1,000s of innocent people, including over 13,000 Palestinian kids who have been killed due to US policy. We must demand peace, safety, rights, dignity, & equality for all. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
@tbluvoter
@DemSocialists
Shows the superficiality and the limits of your solidarity. Get your candidate to align with what 80% of Americans want - a ceasefire!

I didn't win in 2016, ran again in 2017 on the ballot & won, becoming the only Democratic local elected & the first one in several years. We built up the party, won more seats, I became mayor, & we were able to lead our town in an inclusive and safe manner through COVID-19 (3/13)
Exhibit A of the racist logic behind US support for the genocide in Gaza. Rep. Goldman refuses to acknowledge that the people who live in the Middle East (other than Israelis) are human. They are all deemed terrorists simply for existing.
#ceasefireInGazaNOW
#StopArmingIsrael
Confronted by voters, Rep. Dan Goldman says he doesn't "trust" number of kids killed in Gaza.
Asked about US aid helping Israeli forces kill Palestinian men, women, and kids, Goldman begins response with "Israel is a democracy in an area surrounded by terrorists."
@NY10Neighbors
Incumbents, the well-connected & wealthy have huge advantages in securing endorsements, nominations, & county party ballot lines. Women are often seen as extensions of men. At a recent convention, many told me they didn't feel free to vote for their preferred candidate (11/13)
@shriyanevatia
It appears to come as a shock to you that the highest aspiration of the brightest minds in society is not always to “lead some industry.”
Your dismissiveness of someone like MLK is also quite clear.
The efforts of activists are the only reason most of us have the rights we have
Horrified by the hateful rhetoric of Trump's 2016 campaign, I ran as a write-in Democratic candidate in a town where Republicans were running unopposed. I knew it was an uphill battle but felt called to oppose Trump & his party & the danger they posed to many communities (2/13)
In my idealistic vision of Democratic leadership, the county party line made sense. However, I soon learned the damaging impact it has on candidates, elected officials, & attempts to represent the will & needs of the public, especially working class, minorities, & women (6/13)
Vivek R had a Soros Fellowship which provides educational funding for immigrants who need financial support despite his income of $500K+ a year. This raises questions about his current anti-affirmative action stance. Why apply for a grant meant for immigrants in need?
Me: "Did you not make 750,000 dollars?"
Vivek Ramaswamy: "Not at the time I had applied for the [Soros] scholarship."
Me: "Yes you did Vivek. This is awkward for you because you did. I've got the tax returns in front of my face."

In a Palestinian enclave in NJ, grief pervades everything
“a more pressing concern, she notes, is reaching a ceasefire & an end to the mounting death toll” “I feel like I'm not only speaking, I'm yelling and screaming at the top of my lungs, to deaf ears”
This is pathetic. Hate isn’t funny. It’s a wonder certain people continue to try to make a career out of being hateful. I hope this is condemned by all.

I do respect him for this because he was trying to stop the xenophobic hate the woman was expressing in the moment & distance himself from the anti-Obama racism claiming Obama is a foreigner. It would have been better to say “Arab” isn’t an insult, but it’s tough to cover it all

@POTUS
has kept on so many horrible Republican foreign policy advisors. Like Trump, he seems to believe in the big man theory of politics & the failed idea of you get some other Arabs to agree with you, you can just cut out the Palestinians. Racist and wrong.
This is actually very worrying:
Brett McGurk is probably the man most responsible for the disaster in Gaza as he pushed for the Saudi-Israel rapprochement, hoping he could relegate the Palestinian cause to the ash heap of history.
Most observers agree
When a Republican State Senator retired in 2021 it created an opening to run for the legislature. Asm. Andrew Zwicker announced he was running for Senate&many encouraged me to challenge him in the primary. I opted to run for assembly in order to avoid a contentious primary (4/13)

NEW: In a call hosted by No Labels, Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D) & Mike Lawler (R) spoke to trustees from NYU, WashU, and more.
The reps suggested the campus protests helped inspire the TikTok ban and that the FBI could get more involved in investigating them.
