This week is heavy here
@NPR
. The layoffs become real and we will lose colleagues who work so hard to put on our programming everyday. We don't know who will go but we know that everyone who is here now... we need them. Tough days ahead.
So…2022 is going to be a little different. I get to join the incredible
@MorningEdition
team as a host with
@NPRinskeep
@rachelnpr
and
@AMartinezLA
. Talk to you soon on your radio or phone, or however you listen. Excuse my rambling, that happens when in EXCITED!
The most stunning thing about all of the people coming into Poland from Ukraine…there are hardly any men. With Martial Law in Ukraine they have to stay behind. So women are juggling bags, babies, strollers and children as they (in some cases) walk into Poland.
After dodging COVID all this time it finally got me in Ukraine. The pandemic is not top of mind for anyone here. People are in a war to save their country from a Russian invasion, thousands of civilians have been killed, the situation is dire.
Lots of people asking when this interview with
@Harry_Styles
airs. It's scheduled for 5:51 am EST right now on
@MorningEdition
. Not an early riser? It will air again two hours later.
Overwhelmed by the outpouring of wonderful notes about my new role. Humbled to soon be part of the
@MorningEdition
team and to get to start my morning with the voices that help us understand the many complicated, sometimes terrifying, sometimes beautiful things in this world.
After a month reporting in beautiful, heartbreaking Ukraine, we crossed into Poland today. A young man in the same van as us breathed a sigh of relief when border guards accepted the exception paper he carried to allow him to cross despite the ban on 18-60 yr old men leaving.
War is always so devastating, so unfair. While in Ukraine I thought often of working in Syria, in Iraq, Libya … doing stories on Yemen. The generations of children from these places, from Afghanistan, whose lives were upended by a war brought to them.
Hey
@dhsgov
and
@tsa
when are you going to stop secondary screening me when I fly domestically, including writing down what I’m wearing? Also when are you going to stop questioning me upon entry into the U.S.? You know everything about my by now. It’s been a few years.
“Police all over the country teargassed protestors, drove vehicles through crowds, opened fire with non-lethal rounds on journalists or people on their own property, & in at least one instance, pushed over an elderly man who was walking away with a cane.”
Good afternoon! Waiting
@DFWAirport
as the
@TSA
fills out their paperwork on me and what I look like. My build is the same as it was three days ago as are my shoes. But today my jacket is a blue jean. A thread below on what’s been happening.
Without the NYT's deep investigation into the U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan that killed ten people from the same family it's unlikely we would have seen this admission by the Pentagon today. The entire strike was deemed a "tragic mistake." The man targeted posed no threat.
"NPR stands for freedom of speech and holding the powerful accountable. It is unacceptable for Twitter to label us this way. A vigorous, vibrant free press is essential to the health of our democracy."
Can’t check in online for my flight tomorrow. This usually means I’m flagged for extra screening and I’m greeted and questioned by
@DHSgov
at the airport back home. Let’s see if I’m wrong this time 🥴
Currently eating breakfast and having coffee at 2 am. I guess this is the life of
@MorningEdition
. My night owl sensibilities are screaming 😮🤣. I'll take any and all tips from my colleagues
@MorningEdition
and anyone else that works irregular hours!!
Day one done! So many great conversations from the self-proclaimed rock nerd who is headed to space to the deputy national security advisor on Ukraine. Shall we try this again tomorrow?
In Dallas, Hungary's PM will address CPAC. Viktor Orbán has been embraced in some conservative circles as a leader to emulate. He's also a man that days ago said "We do not want to become people of mixed race." A senior aide called the speech "a pure Nazi text" and quit.
For nearly 30 years Mohsen Lihidheb has collected whatever the waves washed up in the Tunisian city of Zarzis. First t it was bottles, rubbish. Then it was shoes, some with money still tucked inside. Maybe a person stashing cash on a treacherous journey to try to get to Europe.
You can also play the
@Harry_Styles
interview anytime you want on our apps
@NPRone
or on our website once it has aired. Don’t worry, you do NOT have to get up at 5 am. I’ll be up though…if you want to tune in.
.God. This exchange just aired.
Harry Styles tells
@LeilaFadel
that he watched her recent commencement address online. Leila says - We’re here to talk about you. No one ever asks me questions.” Harry - “I have a list.” And now I’m dying.
I know you all are just starting your morning, but I've been up for hours. All of those hours I've been CONVINCED it was Friday. Just figured out that it is NOT Friday.
A brief, properly distant talk with
@LeilaFadel
, who just relocated to DC - the first time we’ve seen each other since she became co-host of
@MorningEdition
@UpFirst
@NPR
There is something so awful and familiar about watching yet another population flee war. As Ukrainians finally arrive in Poland they find treats and food waiting for them at the train station. A little girl with a popsicle patterned backpack picks out a chocolate bar.
After three hours at over five different stops in the airport for a covid test, forms, QR codes, more forms, a wait for a positive or negative result and immigration we’re finally here! NPR’s team covering
#Olympics2020
is in Tokyo.
People find ways of adapting in war because they have no other choice. They search for moments of normalcy, despite the war around them. Board games in bomb shelters. A man breaking out his best blazer for a walk to a cafe. Our story from Kyiv is on
@MorningEdition
tomorrow.
Somehow this clip isn't everywhere with
@AudieCornish
telling Don Lemon she heard him say a woman's prime is in their 20s, 30s and "maybe 40s." Then she set him straight multiple times. Man I miss her
@NPR
Many listeners reached out after hearing Safia Munye's story. They wanted to help. Now, people have rallied around her and donated enough for her to rebuild.
#GeorgeFloydProtests
It's a good day when you get to vent about the atrocities being done to hummus with someone else who just gets it. Had a great time chatting with
@realmoamer
on
@MorningEdition
about his new show.
A pile of thank you notes in the corner of a now empty EMW Women’s Surgical Clinic. It was virtually the only place to get abortion care in KY. At 10:30 am on Friday it closed its doors. Performing an abortion became a Class D felony.
If you depend on NPR to help make sense of things, consider supporting your local station at a tough time. “NPR Cuts Pay and Benefits After the Outbreak Widens Its Deficit.”
This July 4th we break with tradition. Instead of a reading of the Declaration of Independence
@NPRinskeep

Happy Monday! I spent Sunday reading in the sun and took a walk in the beautiful DC weather ( beautiful for this moment). There is a lot of ugly in the world, but there's joy and beauty as well.
What a year it's been! My first as host of
@MorningEdition
and
@UpFirst
. As I look forward to 2023 I think of the incredible and difficult moments of the last year.
News:
@NPR
named our colleague
@leilafadel
as a new co-host of
@MorningEdition
. Much excitement at a staff meeting just now. She's reported with distinction from all over: from Iraq to Egypt, and LA to Minneapolis. Here’s her soon-to-be-updated bio:
My colleagues making sure they keep reporting in the dark. I’m on a plane to Poland to meet up with
@ArezouRezvani
and
@GPublic
. We’ll head to the border and eventually into Ukraine to join this team of correspondents trying to document what seems to be just the beginning.
Volodymyr Karavinsky is 13. He and his family were ambushed as they fled their neighborhood outside of Kyiv in the early days of the war. Volodymyr’s father was killed, his little cousin Maxim was also killed. He survived with multiple wounds. He’s been through many surgeries.
"East Jerusalem is occupied and annexed. Palestinians who live in East Jerusalem don’t have a police force, they’re not citizens of the country, they’re kind of at the will of the police force,"
@MairavZ
of the
@crisisgroup
says in an interview about the situation in Jerusalem.
My 3-year-old on the way to school today while listening to
@NPR
:
(During a story mentioning space): What’s an alien?
(During
@StoryCorps
episode about a transplant patient): But where’d she get a new heart from?
(As
@LeilaFadel
reporter on Ukraine): What’s Leila Fadel?
I love this picture and the bond between these four. We’ll miss you
@AudieCornish
. It might be your last day on
@NPR
but I can’t wait to see what’s ahead. I know you’ll shine.
Confession. I’m very afraid of dogs and that makes people think I’m mean. I’m not, it’s a phobia. But it also feels very dangerous to take my trash out in case the neighbor opens their door and their dogs run up to say hi. I interpret that as the dog trying to kill me.
How lucky am I? My first show with
@rachelnpr
!!! Everything seems right in the world...other than, you know, all the things that are not. We'll discuss that on the show.
Good Wednesday morning to you and it IS good because it's my first show with our new co-host
@LeilaFadel
! Just hearing her voice instantly makes me happy. :)
Honored to be headed to my alma mater to give the graduate commencement address.
@Northeastern
I started learning the skills I needed to become a journalist. It also taught me how to actually GET A JOB in the field.
Since the day I met you on a plane from Baghdad to Basra in 2005 I’ve admired your strength, empathy and kindness. You uplift, you empower the unheard to find their voice.
@NPR
won’t be the same without you. But your presence is here in the people you lifted up along the way.
In 2004, I joined
@NPR
as Mexico City correspondent and I have been so lucky to have been given so many opportunities by this amazing organization. Yes, I've covered calamities and conflicts, but also the explosions of joy and incandescent bravery that mark the human spirit..
At 4:31 ET, we're preparing for
@MorningEdition
and
@UpFirst
co-hosted by
@LeilaFadel
in Lviv, Ukraine - who is figuring out how best to file from a bomb shelter. Air raid warnings are sounding; Russian missiles are hitting cities in western Ukraine today.
Highlight of my career? Getting to host with
@nprgreene
on his last two days. We’re going to miss him tons. He’s a great newsman and an even better human.
Years ago an
@NPR
manager told me a news program host should be "willing to do absolutely anything" to get a story across. Early this year,
@LeilaFadel
moved amid Ukrainian cities under fire. And this morning, she sings the refrain from "Sesame Street."
@MorningEdition
The most difficult part is you are basically told you don’t get to know why you are being treated this way, what they’re looking for and why you’re on some watchlist with
@CBP
@DHSgov
and
@TSA
. For people with names like mine, backgrounds like mine this happens a lot.
Today
@NoelKing
leaves our airwaves to make audio magic somewhere else. Hearing her voice in the morning was part of my routine. Genuine, funny, smart. We’ll miss you Noel!
I should add this largely stopped domestically for the last couple years but not internationally. I guess my trip to Tokyo to cover the Olympics for
@npr
triggered a new round of secondary screening for my domestic trips. Hopefully it’ll stop soon.
None of this work would have been possible without our Ukrainian colleagues who helped us navigate their nation in its most traumatic moments, in their most traumatic moments.
It's Monday, which means it's
@NPRMichel
's first day in the host seat!
She joins
@NPRinskeep
&
@LeilaFadel
in D.C. and
@AMartinezLA
in LA.
You can hear them on Morning Edition — today and every day — through your local NPR station, or the NPR One app.
Ok. Boarding my flight home now after a family visit. Got two thorough pat downs, a search of my things and my hands and belongings were tested for chemicals. I never wear face cream or sunscreen on travel days in case the chemicals set off the alarms.
Today I was back at my alma mater to address a class of graduates as they begin a new path in this world. A true honor to speak to the
@Northeastern
class of 2022 earning graduate and doctorate degrees. And, I’m now a doctor! At least an honorary one. Go Huskies!

“There is no more time for thinking. Leave!...Save your lives so as not to become cheap labor for the Russians." Ukrainian officials implore citizens to leave as the Russian offensive picks up in the east.
@yarotrof
has been doing consistently illuminating work.
Ukraine implores remaining civilians to flee from Donetsk and Luhansk regions before it’s too late as the Russian offensive picks up. My latest from Donbas, where Russian forces seized Kreminna and are pushing toward Slovyansk.
In the month we reported in Ukraine
@ArezouRezvani
@GPublic
and I tried to give listeners a taste of the fear, defiance and devastation war brings to people. The choices people must make to live. The choices people don’t have when battles happen around them.
MSNBC's Ayman Mohyeldin challenged a former Israeli ambassador: "What do you say to the international community who does not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over East Jerusalem and says what you’re doing to families like his and others is possibly a war crime?"
Team
@MorningEdition
just landed in Tunisia. With parliamentary elections on the horizon we’re looking at the state of democracy in this North African nation that inspired a wave of revolts across the region demanding change. Follow our reporting journey here and on

Lina Abu Akleh is the face of a global campaign to get justice and accountability for her aunt, Shireen Abu Akleh, a journalist killed while covering an Israeli raid. She spoke to us after being named one of Time's 100 emerging leaders for her advocacy.
Thank you! Some hear an "n" and think I'm saying Falden rather than that "dh" sound. I remember doing my first sign off for
@NPR
years ago and deciding "Ok, I'm going to pronounce my family name correctly." People have been asking how to say it ever since 😂
The war crept closer this morning. We spent over three hours in a bomb shelter as Russian missiles struck a military base west of Lviv, near the border with Poland. Reports of at least eight dead and 57 wounded.
Especially at border entry points where our rights are limited. Even though I know I do nothing wrong, the treatment makes you feel angry and defensive. How many times do I have to answer the same qs? The only things that’s changed in 4 years is my hair, my weight and my age.
It’s early here in LA! But I should be wide awake by 8 am eastern to start
@NPRWeekend
. Excited to be back with this team.

, it is one of the subtlest forms of representation/ validation in media I get to enjoy these days ... Yes, it’s the little (big) things.
Trump could've released the search warrant on Mar-a-Lago himself, but he didn't. Now, AG Garland has asked for the warrant to be unsealed in the midst of violent rhetoric. That rhetoric inspired an attack on the Cincinnati FBI office. That was Thursday. Today? We'll see.
Not sure what to tell you. I just say my name like I say my name. My colleagues do a pretty close approximation and I think it's great. Thanks for listening!
I put in freedom of information requests for myself from
@cbp
and
@DHSgov
but there are huge exceptions over national security. I got nothing that provided any information about what list I’m on or why. Everything is opaque. It makes travel uncomfortable.
