My life's mission summed up well: "At critical moments in time, you can raise the aspirations of other people significantly, especially when they are relatively young, simply by suggesting they do something better or more ambitious than what they might have in mind."
@petergyang
i admire that they can do this but god i really abhor this visual style 😫😫😫 it just looks like it makes humans dumber by encouraging them to click on it
What is your post-tech career?
Mine is opening a lounge called Sips N Dips where all we serve are delicious, beautiful cocktails & tasty, creamy dips with all kinds of chips/veggies
Where can your $1K angel check take you?
I built this Angel Investment Value Calculator to help you understand the answer:
- If there are between 1-5 additional rounds of dilution after your investment
- If the company exits for $100M-$10B
Who is hiring in NYC? 👀 With a real, physical office!
I miss hallway chats, random jokes, after-work hangs, face-to-face brainstorming meetings, and high fives after a big accomplishment 🔥
Got more engagement in 24 hours than I had in the past 5 years because I finally tweeted thoughts & ideas instead of just RTing things and saying "Awesome!" 🙃
Didn't think I was the type to fear sharing my thoughts, but I did!
For anyone stuck in RT hell, just start typing!
Seinfeld theory of startups: If there's a Seinfeld episode about a life inconvenience/inefficiency, it's both universal enough and frustrating enough that it should be solved with a startup
@MelissaOng69420
i find comfort in imagining the annoying insta-obsessed gf yelled at her bf for 2 hours to get the perfect picture with the right lighting and angles — doesn’t seem very happy to me!
I'm excited to share a big life & career update today: I just joined
@angellist
in a Community & Marketing role and today was my first day!
I’ll still leading
@thecouncilcap
Angels Community on the side, but moving out of the full-time investor position and back into operating.
In 5-10 years I want to be the kind of rich person who hires a personal chef for my family but then asks that personal chef about their career goals, helps them achieve them however I can, and then when they advance beyond me I hire another up-and-coming chef to replace them
after 6 months of annoying coworkers, friends, and anyone who would listen by telling them “i’m moving to new york”
i am now, actually, in new york
😎🏙🍾🗽🍎
Has anyone else recently moved into a new apartment is trying to furnish it from scratch??
Can we just meet up and cry for a few mins to get it out of our systems?!? 😭😭😭😭
Some news: I moved on from
@beondeck
last week and have been taking some time off before I decide what's next.
I logged back on today when I heard that a significant portion of our very talented team was just laid off:
Today is a sad day. We let go of 72 great people who helped build On Deck into what it is today.
Our focus in the next few days will be supporting our team – particularly those departing the company.
If you’re looking to hire incredibly talented people, DM or email me.
Extremely excited to announce that I’ve joined
@thecouncilcap
full-time as Principal, working full-time on both The Council Fund & The Council Angels! 💰
This July in NYC, I’m putting together a group tech/vc/STEM women for a opening weekend double-feature:
* Barbie movie
* Dinner and discussion
* Oppenheimer movie
Comment if interested & please share 🥰
Vetting all attendees so will ask for a call/chat/etc first!
I’m so excited to publicly announce that I joined the
@beondeck
team and we’re hiring on the Operations team!
Read on to hear more about the 4-year journey that led up to this role, starting with a cold Facebook comment to

😍 Today's my 1-year anniversary of working at
@beondeck
!!! 😍
It's been an amazing journey so far and I can't wait for many more years of bringing talented people from around the world together to learn, grow, and build lifelong friendships.
7 lessons I've learned so far:
I’m excited to finally share the biggest launch of my career: On Deck Catalyst.
With the help of my amazing On Deck colleagues, we’ve built the program we all wished for when we first started out in tech.
✨Announcing: On Deck Catalyst✨
Young leaders are creating real impact earlier than ever.
But it's tough to take an unconventional path on your own.
Today we're announcing On Deck Catalyst to help you make your mark on the world.
Who has gone from early employee (joined at <50) at rocketship/unicorn startup to founder?
Please tag them below!!!
Super hard to find this group & many of us want to learn from them.
thinking of throwing a party called “catch up with everyone at once” where i invite 30 people i’ve wanted to grab coffee with over the past 4 months so we done one big ol mega-coffee
Did Twitter get a few key senior hires in Product who turned the ship around or did it come from the top? How did it get re-energized into innovating again?
People who don’t just WFH but work from their bedroom:
How do you create work-life separation?
How do you unplug and say “I’m ending my work day now”?
Thought I never needed to do it but nope
Why write 1K angel checks instead of waiting until you have enough cash to write 5K-10K angel checks?
Am I missing something? Is it hard to jump straight to 5/10? 1K won't make you any $ even if the company blows up so isn't it just sinking cash?
There are no "career paths" anymore.
Do lots of online research, meet people who have done interesting things, and don't be boxed into artificial "pre-requisites" that are no longer relevant.
Run in a straight line to your dreams, stop "preparing"
So excited to share that today I started a new role as General Manager of the Entrepreneurial Cluster at Sylva ()
I'm excited to dive into another ambitious, early-stage, remote team focused on my favorite thing -- meaningful digital communities.

Lot of the people who were outed by
#MeToo
movement in 2017-2019 have been "laying low" for a couple of years but are now coming back like nothing happened
Stop stressing out about "monetizing your passions" and re-frame it: Share the things you create with the world.
Share what you're thinking, building, and making on social media, reach out to people you want to collaborate with & learn from, and good things will happen
Work-life integration > work-life balance.
It *IS* possible to create work that you find fulfilling. Many millennials operate from a scarcity mindset because they think this is impossible. Find work that you don't need to "escape" and build your dream lifestyle.
Who's the most talented Gen Z founder or builder who you think is under-hyped?
Who has tons of talent & grit but a minimal network?
Tag them below and I'll help them get connected 👉
@cauchyfriend
the guys are excited for the cuteness and the women are wary of their body being ripped in half & having a 24/7 responsibility that makes their career and personal time 10x harder
Many people in startups are willing and interested in helping young people break in, but they also have other priorities.
NEVER lead with entitlement, it will not get you anywhere. It’s their choice if they want to take time/energy to support you.
Putting together a very specific mastermind group, please DM if you fit the following:
- Among the first 25 employees of startup (not founder)
- Startup growing extremely fast; approx. Series A/B now
- Care deeply abt work & career
- Want to found/invest long-term
Is anyone else having an excessively hard time balancing work, social life, relationship, and family post-vax?
Can we have a support group? I'm doing a worse job than my freshmen year of college 💀
Stop glamorizing "the struggle" and work to become financially free.
This is obviously way easier for some people over others, but in general, Gen Z does not despise money or find it "problematic" the way many Millennials do. Money & resources = freedom.
I used to wonder how successful people had the strength and fortitude to stick to consistent exercise AND have a challenging career.
Now I realize that at some point, you learn that it's necessary, so you just do it.
Who's raising their Pre-Seed or Seed right now?
We would LOVE to hear from you at
@TheCouncilCap
Angels!!
Pitch us on our website & mention in the comments that you saw this tweet.
Our crew of >150 female operator-angels particularly wants to hear from *female* founders.
@iam_preethi
The thing that breaks my heart is that many high school and college young women ask me “I really like programming but I’m worried because everyone says it’s hard to be a woman in tech, what do I do?” and I say “focus on the first half of that sentence”
If you’re a student or early-career in startups, you may be poking around
@LinkedIn
to see the paths of people you admire and see how they got to where they are now.
That’s great! But keep one thing in mind —
YC pitch gripe: A lot of founders spent too much of their precious time (50-70%) naming their pedigree and $3k MRR vs. **Explaining what the product does**!!!
Some ONLY said the 1-liner.
Can we at least get 3-4 sentences?
-> Aug/Sep 2021
-> 3-4 days in an Airbnb
-> 12-16 dope female/nb people in tech
-> Grace Hopper meets bachelorette party meets Camp No Man's Land (by
@the_wing
)
Who's in 👀
@JoshuaOgundu
Here is a worse one: People who are in a very "meh" relationship that begins around age 20-25
But they don't have the balls to end it when it's clearly not good for either person when they hit 27-31
But now you've sunk 5+ years into this person so...guess this is it
Looking for a teammate for a cool stealth project I'm working on!!
- You absolutely love building online communities and have experience running some (I love hearing about people's Neopets etc. experiences - doesn't have to have been your "job")
@emilystjams
I only followed it at the beginning when it seemed more like curiosity/confusion, and chalked it up to her age…when I checked in recently, it’s so heartbreaking that she leaned into hate instead of acceptance 😫😫😫
Today I'm reflecting on the wild ride of 2 years at

I joined in May 2020, just a few months into COVID, quarantined in SF and impressed with the experience I had as a fellow in

Should tons more young people drop out of college to start startups? Maybe, probably not in the average case.
Can it still be true that young people are heavily under-utilizing their talents and taking way too few risks? Absolutely.
starting to feel like “optimist” (vs pessimist) has become a stronger signal i’ll vibe w someone than liberal/conservative, city-dweller/rural, race, gender, etc.
Hosting a *sneak peek* party next Thurs evening in Manhattan for friends, founders, investors, and community enthusiasts!!
If you'll be in NYC that evening and would like delicious food, a cool curated crowd, and can give feedback on my new company idea, comment/DM!
There are many problems in the world that need solving, but who does it serve for you to be pessimistic?
Be optimistic. We can solve them. The future will be better than the present & the past.

I know I’m opening a can of worms here, but…
If a city builds *tons* of new housing units, even “luxury” apartments, won’t the sheer supply lower the price of luxury units and thus lower the price of “affordable housing” units? ie lower price of all units?
@jaltma
Maybe it's not even about who they attracted but how much they helped each other sprint to the "big leagues" quickly
Not everyone had done something amazing before they joined, they just became the Mafia they did after by investing in one another / founding together
