Hi
@thetimes
- if you drop the ‘former Miss England’ bit you might have room for ‘Dr’ which arguably, given the context, is the more relevant detail?
Paul is here with a framework for us to manage our periods at work, ladies.
When you’re stuck in a theatre or in the ED miles from your bag, about to bleed through and your pockets are full of bleeps and phones not tampons and pads, call him for advice. He knows what to do
For those of you wondering how sexual harassment of female surgeons can occur *in theatre* - may I present to you a letter in today’s
@thetimes
Nowhere in any prospectus I read did it say “expect to be sexually harassed/assaulted”
This letter is shameful and shameless
We had to tell families only one person could visit their loved one in ICU, and only once we knew they were dying, and only for an hour
Meanwhile, they drank, danced and laughed
“As a nurse, I encounter structural racism every day" Donna Kinnair on
#bbcqt
.
Her full title is Professor Dame Donna Kinnair, but this was missed out of her name tag.
Hugh Pennington’s title - Professor - was not missed out.
Tonight’s on call highlight so far: showing an ophthalmologist a journal article picture of an eye and turns out it was actually a **penis** cos I hadn’t looked closely enough and now I can never speak to a visiting ophthalmologist ever EVER again.
The only villians in the sad case of Archie Battersbee are the Christian Legal Center, who also interfered in the cases of Alfie Evans and Charlie Gard causing extra heartache for the families and hospital teams
Using grief stricken parents to further your agenda is despicable
I wonder if Sue has reflected on quite how much nursing has changed in the 60 years since she qualified?
Nursing is a profession not a vocation. Dedication won’t pay bills
Pay nurses and Drs in training a living wage commensurate with skill and experience and they won’t strike
Withdrawal of life sustaining treatment in ICU is conducted with the continuous presence of a trained ICU nurse providing 1:1 care, with medical help if needed. Supporting family is central to this process, as is preventing pain/distress in the patient. It is not barbaric 1/
…in which you find out I am a loser who has to hide in a quiet dark room from about half eight every night..
But seriously we need to remove stigma around neurodivergence in Drs because there’s a lot of us…
The narrative being pushed by the media that WLST in ICU is cruel and causes suffering is one that we as ICU staff need to counter, and counter strongly. I understand a family’s grief but the reporting is one sided and will cause future harm
@RostronTony
@thetimes
I’m afraid there is a strong sexist element to this as well.
#untitling
is a thing - women’s professional titles are used less frequently than men’s.
By all means make scientists and physicians more ‘humanl by including details but don’t
#untitle
women.
Said to a male colleague how if i can, I move my car early eve when on call to the well lit visitors car park from the dark out-the-way staff car park, so I’m less freaked leaving the hosp in the early hours.
The need for this was a total surprise to him
But this is how we live
More on period products - we need to correct this historical view that products are an added extra vs a basic hygiene necessity
(Am also waiting for my colleagues to give me 💩for being called a ‘leading consultant’- is this the same as ‘top doc?)
Our lovely team at
@WghLothian
ICU sharing the love across the barriers!
They have demonstrated such resilience, such good humour and such kindness to each other and to the rest of the hospital team.
I am so proud to count myself a member of
#TeamWGHICU
I’ve no problem with men becoming surgeons. I think they can actually be quite good surgeons. But they need to decide if they want to be surgeons or daddies. They can’t expect to do both. This is just evolution, people, its nature, it’s science ok don’t @ me
Male mentor said ‘That’s what Saturday afternoons are for, that’s when you do your research.’I said ‘That’s when I do my laundry.’He stopped to think.He has a partner at home who his entire career has done the life maintenance at home. Fascinating article:
Oh no had my pic taken for the unit photo board and forgot to wear makeup today in advance and also tried to look serious but actually just look like I want to fight you
Never fails to impress me how hard it is - in 2022 - for people to realise women can be doctors. Here is
@marieclaireuk
hedging their bets hilariously…..
Very clever man making very clever point
Reminds me of when I was a reg in Dunfermline and I hid in the anaes room at 2am putting cut up inco pad into my pants wearing gown to hide bloodstain while my ODP guarded the door. There were no pads she could get me.
So, Matt….yeah
So many deeply concerning facts now emerging about the organisational response to consultant concern about Lucy Letby - but this paragraph from a Guardian article sums up a lot
Dismissing the serious concerns of an entire group of consultants?
That’s a very risky choice
POV: you start your ICU WR and son from London is by the first bedspace demanding to know why you’ve done *nothing* for his mum who is intubated, ventilated, on multiple pressors and the filter
Hands down the most useful comment on
#ThisIsGoingToHurt
🙄
So anyone who encounters work related burnout needs to question their mental suitability, right?
BREAKING BBC News:
Cardiologist says likely contributory factor to excess cardiovascular deaths is covid mRNA vaccine and roll out should be suspended pending an inquiry.
We did it. We broke mainstream broadcast media 🔥🔥🔥
1. Every women in every other walk of life will have stories of leaks and bleeding through/running out of stuff and working out of hours makes this tougher to deal with
2. Fairness doesn’t mean treating everyone the same because not everyone has the same needs
Cheers thnx bye
So is the problem here 1. Workforce planning 2. Inflexible training patterns/working hours 3. Social norms around caregiving roles or 4. WOMEN RUINING EVERYTHING
@lgblewis
@DrSeanMon
@thetimes
That’s fine - make that argument in the article as a footnote to the vaccine development in a pandemic.
Don’t mention it w/out mention of prof titles on the front page of the blooming Times.
This would not happen to a man.
As tired and apprehensive as NHS staff are right now, we woudl take 15s out our day to brush our fucking hair before going on the telly.
It’s a minor thing amongst the countless other things but it still makes me very very angry hence Twitter sweary moment
Feel like I will go to my grave shouting that we aren’t upset at being mistaken for nurses, we are challenging the notion that *women can’t be doctors*
Honestly, try being a physically small Asian woman physician for one day and see how differently you experience the world
Loads of people have shared this already today but I’ve just read it and it is excellent - the best account of what it feels like when everyone is relying on you to knwo what to do and you feel you don’t know - and what happens afterwards.
Comportment Syndrome: when you have never heard of implicit bias, can't for the life of you work out why it exists and how it manifests, and refuse to listen to anyone trying to tell you about. it
Have been offered £84/hr for resident ICU nightshift to cover during the Scottish
#JuniorDoctorsStrike
Have politely declined the nightshift I had been available for
@BMAScotland
have told us what they think consultant extra-contractual time is worth. I believe my union
The 1997 ed. of the Oxford handbook was *wild* and I have such clear memories of going through all this stuff as a PRHO, short of the emergency venesection
Today has been a day of muting and blocking but also have take my daughter to get her second dose of the Covid 19 vaccine.
Vaccines work and we are privileged (and I am very grateful) to have free and straightforward access to them.
Happy
#AutismAcceptanceDay
from this autistic intensive care consultant whose face always looks like she wants to fight you even though she is actually in a very good mood right now
There will be a lot of reporting about the naming of Brianna Ghey’s murderers today - this is from
@BBCNews
Can I make it clear that autism is a lifelong neuro developmental condition and not a personality disorder?
Accuracy is important when discussing stigmatised conditions
The comments on the airplane CPR story:
US MedTwitter: What a hero! Saved a life of a young woman with CPR 35 000 feet in the air, never mind the identifiable details!
UK MedTwitter comments: You’ve shared identifiable details to tell the world someone fainted on a plane
- you can’t ‘check’ a tampon once its in
-period blood flow is variable, not constant
- you can bleed though a tampon in < 2h esp when a teenager
The ‘pretty sure’ person giving ‘no exemptions’ for toilet breaks is a teacher
Periods are brutal in school - don’t make it harder
Today, as a one-off treat, all on call anaesthetists are offering a no-questions-asked, on-demand cannula service
Just bleep 8008135 to the anaesthesia bleep and wait for them to arrive, tourniquet and US in hand
Oooft - excerpt from a C19 memoir by a senior critical care nurse and there is a *lot* to unpack here
(And this seems really quite atypical an attitude for ICU teams during Covid but as a non Dr in training I am not the best person to opine on this)
The more acutely unwell someone is, the more straightforward the initial management decisions are.
Someone who is a little bit of this and a little bit of that is actually more challenging than someone who is peri-arrest
Discuss
All this whose-job-is-it-to-change-the-scrubs-bag is sending me a bit right wing, ngl
Time is not a variable and time I spend doing something else is time someone else has to spend doing my job only there’s only one of me on at any one time and that’s not elitist that’s facts
Christmas Day will be just me, my daughter and Petal. We’ll meet the rest of the family for an afternoon walk and bring hot chocolate to drink on the way. I love a good family Xmas, but I love my actual family more...
@Conservatives
3️⃣ Today’s offer is final.
There will be no more talks on pay.
This country will not be bullied into higher taxes or higher borrowing to fund unrealistic pay demands, risking higher inflation.
The bar for seeming ‘unkind’ is much lower for women, and lower still for women of colour
Ofc we should be courteous and respectful to colleagues - but kindness is incredibly subjective and requires extra emotional labour from women which is largely unacknowledged
After listening to 1000s of patients, doctors & healthcare organisations in our consultation, we’ve published
#GoodMedicalPractice2024
. Get to know the updated professional standards for UK doctors, before they come into effect on 30 January 2024
Got my Covid and flu vaccines today - but the real shot in the arm was my Annual Allowance Statment arriving in the post - a £12 000 tax bill, to be paid from post-tax salary, just for doing my job! Fantastic and so motivating…
The phrase ‘big boy surgery’ reinforces the notion of surgery as a gendered specialty
One that valorises traditional masculine stereotypical traits - confidence, dominance spilling into arrogance
It’s not a neutral descriptor
And won’t help attract or keep women in surgery
Female Drs being mistaken for nurses = assumption of occupation based on gender + having to explain who you actually are again and again = v v tiring
For the vast majority of us, this isn’t because we feel nursing is an inferior profession and so are insulted to be seen as one
@drkateflavs
@SameenNassar
It’s an Indian thing. We wash our dishes under running water and can’t comprehend why people dunk dishes into already dirty water and then put them straight into the drying rack.
Consultant looks up the medical records of a woman her ex boyfriend has just started dating.
This really is a terrible breach of trust as well as being a monumentally stupid thing to do as its such a traceable thing
As anaesthetists, how do we cope doing long lists, often solo, when we also have heavy unpredictable bleeding? This is a wellbeing issue and needs to be talked about more.
And again - why dont we have access to emergency period products at work?!
The 2019 Romney report laid bare a culture at
@TheBMA
that tolerated sexism and sexual harrassment
How many members of council lost their seat as a result?
So please explain why, when a Black man speaks truth to power about racism in UK society, this happens?
Hands up if you’re a female Dr who has received comments on “confidence” in feedback - either excess or lack of.
If you’re a male Dr who has received the same add any emoji you want.
(And it’s a 🙋🏽♀️ from me)
The thing is you have to be polite in these situations and smile and laugh and agree and appear thankful because we all know the potential consequences of telling this kind of person to stop talking and go away
Imagine being a Female PGA Professional and some guy comes up to you telling you how to swing 😂
She's a better person than I am because no way could I hold in my reaction
Dr Hilton advocates women Drs being ‘tough’ and just ‘dealing’ with bullying, harassment and assault even if if a sexual nature
Dr Hilton leaves one star reviews on Tripadvisor when he feels talked down to (H/T
@kwoade
)
Dr Hilton is not tough. He is an insecure bully.
My Thursday tip - don’t ask any woman wanting to do any specialty whether she wants to have any, or more, children. It’s not career guidance. It’s not friendly nurturing chat. Just don’t.
Maybe the GMC can implement a rule that Drs writing in horror to national papers state clearly whether they actually work in the NHS or not?
If the pay and conditions weren’t good enough for him, maybe Dr L can reflect on why they aren’t good enough, full stop
Let this be what we remember about the Hilton incident - a letter by 55 consultants from his place of employment strongly supporting women and condemning misogyny and sexism in medicine
Their letter (in RTd thread) makes me proud to be an intensivist and anaesthetist 1/
In direct response to retired doctor Peter Hilton’s comments in correspondence with The Times, 55 consultants – some of who worked with Dr Hilton – have come together proactively to reject his views in the strongest possible terms.
Am reminded of the time I took 2 paracetamol at the beginning of a cardiac ICU shift for pelvic girdle pain at 28/40 and the consultant shook his head saying “I hope you REALLY needed that”
He then pissed off home at 10am leaving me to do everything so he really cared so he did
"A hospital consultant put his hands together in prayer and said, ‘God, forgive me for giving you this. I hope your baby’s okay’ when prescribing ondansetron for severe hyperemesis gravidarum (HG)."
Unprofessional++, incorrect, and cruel.
This makes me so sad!!
#Maternal
had the best dialogue and portrayed female doctors brilliantly
‘Have you ever attended an assertiveness course?’
‘What makes you think I’m not assertive?
Is there a course for arrogant pricks who can’t take instructions from a woman?’
💔
#Maternal
We had a lot more to say. The show needed a high number of viewers for
@ITV
to sell advertising to break even. Maternal didn’t get that number. It hurts that it ends here but I am incredibly proud of the show, grateful and a bit amazed that we got to do it at all.
Boggles the mind you can spend all shift with all the fancy machines and all the tech and at handover still worry your scrubs are stained and you smell of period blood because the tiny cost to keep emergency period products in staff toilets is just ‘too much’
This issue matters!
One of my favourite things about
#LineofDuty
was that it had Raj for Cardiac Arrest in it so now we can all imagine what he looks like as a moneybags consultant who actually gets some sleep
It’s 12 quid to the practice to pay the staff and keep the building running to deliver the vaccine. It’s not twelve quid into the GPs pocket.
And the practices are doing this on top of their usual work.
Hello, I am an intensive care consultant in a medical drama. I either stand there shouting ‘we’re losing him!’ in melodramatic fashion or am mysteriously absent, while the surgical team of said drama take my place intubating and doing lines.
Hello. I am a barrister in a crime drama. I wander around the courtroom, give impromptu speeches to the jury mid-cross examination and never actually put my case to the witness. It’s wonder the judge doesn’t throw his gavel at me.
❤️ this letter.
But what a shame we can’t prepare our young women to enter adult life able to speak up equally to young men without being seen as ‘too confident for their own good’
This bias against ‘confident’ women persists in medical training and beyond
