My youngest son, who is heading to the Middle East for his third Navy deployment, married his sweetheart in our backyard this afternoon. Didn’t see that coming. A reminder that even during this dark times love conquers all.
Today I saw the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial.
“Guards were only following orders...”
It’s a slippery slope when we brutalize, demonize and dehumanize people who, at the end of the day, have the same hopes and fears we do.

Hitler’s meteorologists predicted a relentless storm (“no way allies will be able to attack!”) Eisenhower’s meteorologists detected a narrow window of dry weather and lighter winds; just enough time to launch D-Day. NWS is right, arguably the most consequential forecast ever.
Winter 2023-24 was easily the warmest on record for the Contiguous U.S. according to Prism climate data - a full 0.75F warmer than the second place winter (2015-16). Areas in dark red had their warmest winter on record (since 1895-96). Places in regular red had a top 5 warmest.
My youngest son was 11 when the Twin Towers were attacked on 9/11. He was so moved by the tragedy that he attended The Naval Academy and flew MH-60R choppers around the world. So proud of the USA’s sons and daughters putting their lives on the line every day to keep us free 🇺🇸
We love our dogs so much because they accept us for who we really are, warts and all. Leo was loyal & friendly; he loved everyone who wasn't a squirrel. After 11 amazing years we lost Leo to degenerative heart disease. He went quickly and we were there. RIP buddy. You were loved
Wednesday evening the president attended a fundraiser with top Minnesota GOP leaders and candidates for office inside the home of Marty Davis in Shorewood. Are they being asked to quarantine?

Minnesota weather is wild but I'm pleased to report that the ground underfoot is fairly stable:
"Minnesota is one of the least seismically active states in the United States. However, there have been at least 20 earthquakes in the state in the last 160 years, all of which were
I was today years old when I realized that rainbows are circular but we only see half the arc from the ground. This photo was taken by pilot Lloyd J Ferraro from the cockpit of a commercial airplane at 30,000 feet. I guess this means there's no pot of gold anywhere, eh?
Saying a continuous prayer for my 91 year old mother in law, Josephine, who has tested positive for COVID-19. 10 out of 60 residents in her senior care facility caught the virus. So far Jo is doing OK - family is visiting outside her window with a daily Facetime call. Scary times
One of those odd moments where 14" is a disappointment. We've picked up 3-4" at MSP; another 10-12" from late afternoon into midday Thursday for a storm total of 13-18". A few spots could get 20" but most of us will not. Still quite bad out there by tonight, just a tick less bad
Really shocked it didn’t “magically disappear.” My 91 year old grandmother recovered from Covid-19. Now my 19 year old niece just got infected at University of of North Carolina. It’s all noise and statistics until it hits home
2 years ago my youngest so had a backyard Covid wedding with 7 of us. Tonight he married his sweetheart in Santa Fe in front of adoring friends and family. So blessed…
Hurricanes are the tropic’s pressure relief valves; heat engines converting warm ocean water into wind and cooling rain. A nuke heating air and water to 100,000,000C, the temperature of the sun’s interior, may create a (radioactive) hurricane of unimaginable fury.

SCOOP: President Trump has suggested multiple times to senior Homeland Security and national security officials that they explore using nuclear bombs to stop hurricanes from hitting the United States.
Humanity not politics. Joe Biden sent this personal letter 2 years ago after my wife was diagnosed with glioblastoma, the same brain cancer which took his son Beau’s life. It inspires me when I am feeling crushed by the weight of this insidious disease
GFS tracking close to ECMWF (European) model. Not sure how we don't pick up at least 10" by Friday, with 20"+ over parts of southern MN and WI. Most MSP snow since December 10-11, 2010 17.1" ("Domebuster") storm? We'll see.
Ubering to the airport now to get the hell out of here.
The Fourth National Climate Assessment Volume II: Impacts, Risks, and Adaptation in the United States was just released. NCA assesses the science of climate change and variability and its impacts across the United States.

and her family in your prayers as she goes in for a bone marrow transplant at Mayo Clinic. Today she described the next step in her leukemia treatment, and the physical and mental toll she's grappling with. Jor is 'gonna beat this.
I can't recall ever seeing anything like this in Minnesota. A dirty little "smoke front" is now pushing from north to south across the state. Smoke may be thickest and most noticeable tonight in the metro.
Just when you thought you'd seen everything...
We were wrong. All of us. No hand-waving excuses. We screwed the pooch. A reminder that wx models are a guide, not Gospel. We do the best we can with the data at hand
A glaring reminder that meteorology is not an exact science, like economics, foreign policy and fantasy football
@pdouglasweather
Media types hyped the higher snow totals way ahead again. I suspect it gets eyeballs on their medium. But never take accountability for being totally wrong. Not sure why folks keep trusting.
It was 100F inside this barn outside Ames, Iowa. They shut off the noisy portable A/C units every time they filmed a scene, so we were sweating up a storm. The make-up people tried powder but it was futile, a twister of perspiration. Met Helen Hunt's body double.
Good times.
You know what’s even better than wasting 24 hours on Twitter? Riding the Ferris wheel at Scheels in the EP Mall with your grandson. Doesn’t get much better than that
Average temperature anomaly over entire next 15-days: huge area of 10-15°F above normal.
According to some folks on this site, winter is just around the corner again. 😂
Will be some brief cold shots east of the Rockies, but can we stick a fork in this winter yet?
6" of new snow by breakfast Wednesday. After a brief lull snow gets heavier by afternoon with 30-40 mph winds - another 12" snow Wednesday PM into Thursday afternoon. Most of the metro will pick up 15-20". White-outs + drifting snow + black ice + subzero windchills = stay home
Payback is a... beach.
Mother Nature has a wicked sense of humor. ECMWF prints out 2-3" liquid precip by next Wednesday. Much of that will fall as snow. Could it be a lot? Yes. Do we know precisely how much. No.
I'm putting my driveway stakes back in...
Thoughts and prayers 🙏
Hurricane Dorian is now projected to grow into a Cat. 4 storm.
One of the most accurate storm predictions, the European Model expects a track that would strike a full frontal blow on Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.

What’s kind of funny is that for the last 3 days I’ve been predicting 12-20”. I still think we’ll wind up in that range, closer to 13-15” since Tuesday night. What’s different is that some people aren’t even waiting for the storm to end to start ranting and raving. That’s new 😮
From Paul to “Papa”. Proud of my new grandson, Jordan (not named after
@JordanaWCCO
, btw). Top 3 things that have changed since my son, Walt, was born in ‘87 at 3:04 and 5:04pm
@wccoradio
This is very sad. TV meteorologists, attempting to connect dots, share trends and peer-reviewed science, are getting a taste of what climate scientists have dealt with for decades. I have friends in the business who are burned out and afraid to check their emails. Crazy
Potential for 4-7" Tuesday PM (ECMWF below only thru 12z Wednesday). This is only the appetizer. Main course comes Wednesday night into Thursday with another 7-15" possible. Plowable Tuesday, but Thursday's storm may border on crippling with blowing snow and white-out conditions
Patriots wear masks to protect each other. You wear a mask to protect Joe Schmo. Joe Schmo wears a mask to protect you. We all wear masks to reduce collective risk. The epidemiologists have been saying this for 9 months. Whatever happened to “love your neighbor as yourself”?
My 91 year old mother in law (Josephine) recovered from Covid-19 back in March. She’s been struggling with Alzheimer’s for 11 years, but there’s still a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her lips. One tough, amazing woman.
1). Pro-tip: storm isn't over yet, just the opening salvo.
2). Unlike economics, foreign policy and fantasy football, predicting snow amounts down to the inch is not an exact science.
3). There will still be a giant pile of powder in your yard tomorrow morning. Enjoy
Somehow Minnesota is now America's smoke capital, with "very unhealthy" air predicted again tomorrow.
Virus, drought, wildfires - but I'm very happy to report no locust on Doppler!
@pdouglasweather
There are very few meteorologists who buy into the climate change b.s. A climatologist is a Meteorologist with a PHD. Yet even they don't buy into it. When you hear someone say "such and such is caused by climate change." Have them explain it to you. They won't be able to.
Bad form to call in sick (of commuting) for Thursday? Work from home? Work from Sarasota?
NOAA predicting "Category 5" winter impacts for MSP metro: "extensive and widespread closures and disruptions". In other news the drought may be winding down...
"Jim has my permission to work from home on Monday due to treacherous, potentially incapacitating conditions on area roadways. If you value Jim's safety please consider this an excused absence. Frankly, Jim will be far more productive (and happier) at home."
Sincerely,
Pauly D.

. Please keep her and her entire family in your prayers. She’s tough. Jor will beat this
I’m relieved
@JimCantore
is OK but when will we stop putting reporters and meteorologists at risk during extreme weather events? It’s a matter of time before someone is injured (or worse) by flying debris. It’s 2022: We have cameras everywhere! It’s time to bring the mets indoors
We could easily be butt-deep in snow with subzero windchills right now. It’s a bit unnerving to see almost all of North America devoid of bitter air looking out 2 weeks. This is shaping up to be a Super El Niño unlike anything I’ve ever seen 😮
Forecast 2m temperature departures through Xmas Eve...Pacific dominated/mild pattern that will be slow to break. Deja vu to last winter. Easy on heating costs but not ideal farther north where local economies and ecosystems count on having real winters with persistent snow cover.
Jurassic Park came out 30 years ago today. Spielberg wanted to show an approaching storm in 3-D. We used imagery from "Andrew" in our EarthWatch software to create the look he wanted.
In this photo Steve is explaining that I might have made a huge mistake going into meteorology.
Plowable but not apocalyptic...
Thinking 5-8" metro with up to 10" northern/western suburbs, closer to a foot for parts of central and western MN
Monday changeover to rain and dreaded "dry tongue" limits how how much snow falls at MSP
Sunday will still be a slow, slushy mess
Winter 2023-2024 is Over...
- Temperatures will continue to trend well above normal to close out February and that shows no signs of changing as we go into the beginning of March. The entire country will be well above normal besides the West Coast for the foreseeable future.
Sailing on Lake Minnetonka on Christmas Day 2023. My friend, Bob Bilger, says it was by far the least lake ice he’s ever seen on December 25. Planning to sail again New Year’s weekend. Didn’t need sunscreen 😳
Weird: you present the data and the trends and you're labeled "hysterical". Our grandkids may be hysterical when they realize we were warned but ignored reality because it was too "political"
Climate predictions were good (red line is 37 model forecasts, black line is reality)
@pdouglasweather
Paul, people might be more accepting of global warming if the message wasn’t overly politicized and hysterically alarmist followed up by calls for inefficient, expensive and economically destructive green energy solutions based on climate predictions that have NEVER been right.
Dr. Mark Seeley predicts the warmest meteorological winter (December 1 - February 29) on record, even milder than 1997-1998. Looking at predicted 850mb temp. anomalies for the first week of February I believe him. NWS says "winter heat wave". Words that don't belong together
"tropical vortex" never took off so I'm just going to call this a "BHB" (bizarre heat bubble). 10-day average temperature anomalies are +20F to +30F. Amazing
