If you want to satirize the humans as overblown, evil authoritarians who “other” their enemies, you can’t also present the enemy to the audience as completely and utterly other, incapable of being communicated with and seeking to do nothing but kill and devour.

@GlomarResponder If Denis wanted me to think Paul was bad because of Chani, he shouldn’t have made Paul entirely justified* in his actions and Chani insufferable. *Yes, entirely justified. The houses of the Landsraad are pusillanimous cowards who should’ve bent the knee when they had the chance.

The thing is, any serious Christian sees himself as fighting spiritual evil everyday. In his own heart and soul, in his society, in the world. Athanasius contra mundum. Combat is one of the prime analogies to the spiritual life. The Church on earth is the Church Militant.

@Goodtweet_man They aren’t talking about real people. They’re taking about the people they created in their head so that they could feel righteous indignation.

Gene Wolfe is the kind of author who makes you contemplate buying an expensive academic translation of Zoroastrian creation myths just to see if it sheds light on a single chapter of a multivolume work that’s part of a cycle of multivolume works.

Every time I think, “There’s no way Woodrow Wilson could be worse. I’ve plumbed the depths of his perfidy,” I’m proven wrong yet again.

Dear @amazon , You could have simply written, “We negligently and maliciously wasted money to ruin the Lord of the Rings and the Wheel of Time on @PrimeVideo , so now you have to watch commercials.”

I accidentally switched from the “Following” tab to the “For you” tab for a minute. Apparently the algorithm @X uses interprets, “You are a Catholic priest and follow a bunch of Catholics,” as, “Here, please have some of the worst Catholicism takes ever.”

Off tomorrow, so deciding on a late-night movie. Looking at all the movies I have to watch that I haven’t watched yet. Deciding to watch Dredd for the umpteenth time. Because Dredd.

Elon Musk is worth almost seven times that. Jeff Bezos is worth five times that. Bill Gates is worth almost three and a half times that. Why don’t they solve it? They’ve got more money, so they could do it quicker.

Fans have shown you can edit out the excesses of the Hobbit Trilogy to get one pretty accurate Hobbit movie. I can see no way to edit the Rings of Power to get anything that resembles accurate Tolkien.

Christianity obviously has civilizational and political implications. I never said otherwise. But those exist to serve the preaching and living of the Gospel.

It seems to me that if you don’t find, “You’re welcome to play the game, but not to demand that we change the game for you,” welcoming, then you didn’t really want to play the game in the first place.

I guess what I can’t understand is this: 1. Thinking it completely justifiable to fight a fratricidal war to free men from their chains… WHILE ALSO 2. Thinking that we can’t do anything to prevent the murder of innocent babies that might count as imposing our view on others.

This is entirely correct. This is good theology. This is why I posted almost an entire chapter of the Apocalypse earlier this week. Christ is a CONQUEROR. He is KING OF KINGS and LORD OF LORDS. He wields a TWO-EDGED SWORD.

Maybe talk to real people instead of making up imaginary people in your head that you can be mad at so as to feel the thrill of righteous indignation.
