Nothing and no one hoped to stand against Sauron physically especially by the time of the late Third Age and his victory was absolutely inevitable in a purely martial sense. The point of the rings destruction was to remove his direct and immediate influence over Middle-earth.

Something I’ve begun to realize is people normally suggest that the reason why Tolkien never got more stories published before his death was due to autistic worldbuilding when it was really that he realized that Middle-earth had too many stories for one lifetime.
