Every teacher I know is running on empty. Thereโs too much to do. Thereโs too much pressure (some from ourselves) to get this right because it actually matters. Too many conflicting pressures. And still teaching. This is not on. And no one seems to be listening. 1/2
Number of times my husband was asked if he REALLY wanted to go back full time after paternity leave and in the years since:0
Number of times Iโve been asked recently if Iโm sure going full time is right for me: 9,875 (slight hyperbole)

The lazy teacher narrative has had its desired effect. And now weโre here hanging on by a thread and nobody outside seems to care. This must never happen again. 2/2
I canโt do either of my jobs well enough at the minute. Mum or teacher. Iโm tired of people who say itโs really easy to do (with no children at home). Iโm tired of feeling guilty for sleeping! I just want to be back at school.
It was good to see the Royal College of Nursing writing to their Secretary of State. It would be marvellous if the teaching unions could unite to write their own.
Feeling beyond cross that for the second year in a row the new school year begins before we know what our year 11s and 13s are working towards. In what way is this acceptable? Why arenโt the Education Select Committee doing more?

Not going to quote tweet or screen shot any of the grotesque comments Iโve seen on here, Iโm just going to say that having asthma doesnโt make me less of a person. Itโs a vastly misunderstood condition by most. Mine is well managed. Iโve run a marathon. Iโm not unworthy.
@TabitaSurge
Also read that apparently young children shouldn't be allowed to wear clothes of the opposite gender (according to BBC website). This could prove problematic.
I never thought Iโd be blocked for merely saying that my son will have two part-time teachers in his reception year in September and Iโm not bothered. These things are true. I was part time for two years. Would be somewhat hypocritical of me to be grumpy about other people.
Secondary English teachers, can we stop pretending that a rigorous English curriculum means moving A Level texts down to Year 7. It doesn't. And those text lose somewhat on the way. Maturity matters when discussing texts.
In case anyone was wondering/didn't know/hadn't worked it out from January I will be Head of Department at my lovely school. Any tips on good reading/resources/people to follow for a new HoD will be warmly welcomed. Thanks all!
Whether you're learning from home ๐ ; or you want to give your kids a little boost with their schoolwork ๐
Starting Monday at 9am on
@cbbc
- we've got you! ๐
Last four days as Deputy Head of English start on Monday. Something magical will happen over the holidays and I will return phoenix-like to school as Head of Department. I couldn't BE any more nervous.
In case it's useful for anyone - here is a link to my revision calendar for AQA GCSE Lit and Lang this year. Works for all text options. Tasks are 5 minutes tops. Credit to loads of people I've magpied off over the years:
So, I've been 10% braver and put this together - it's free because I have no idea if it will work or be worth it. But anyway, if you're interested in me rabbiting on about Macbeth - here is the event.
I wonโt be doing that 10 year challenge thing. 10 years ago I was thin. And could run a comfortable 10km. This is not true now. ButโฆI have two gorgeous children now and have achieved many things in the past decade. Itโs too different to compare.
Independent schools? Many are still open. Many still have boarders. I have friends who are definitely still working in their independent schools (and boarding duty is hugely time consuming and intense). Donโt be distracted by the dead cat. They are not the 1
I wore my โWell behaved women seldom make historyโ t shirt to the 3 year olds ballet class today. Got a compliment on it from another mum. Never miss a chance to smash the patriarchy. Even in a room full of little girls dressed in pink.
Tomorrow is my first day in school as HoD. I 'think' I'm ready. Starting to get anxious about everything as it will be a bit awkward until my replacement is appointed. I should try and chill out tonight, yes?
@TabitaSurge
It's madness. Among other nonsense given that some GCs say that clothes don't matter and you should just wear what you want, why on earth do we need to say anything about uniform changes.
Twitter seems to suggest that 'Order and Disorder' in
#Macbeth
is what people would like me to talk about. Before I start working on it can I just check people are genuinely interested? I'm having quite bad imposter syndrome here. A like will of course suffice to let me know.
Fellow year 7 teachers. Take care. Many of the books we โthinkโ of as ours actually moved to KS2 a long time ago. Personally I would avoid any Morpurgo for this reason (although still have some on suggested reasons). Books like Holes and Wonder are also regularly done. 1/4
This year I teach 8 different classes in 11 different rooms. Not a single one of those classes has the same room twice. I don't have anything approaching a 'base' for my teaching and it is utterly exhausting.
I was 10% braver a few weeks ago and applied for a role that I didnโt think I had enough experience for. I have an interview on the 24th April. Now I need recommendations for reading about department and school leadership!
@TabitaSurge
It's ridiculous. I commented on MN on it when they called Georgia Tennant a handmaiden as well. Pointing out that no, she just disagrees with them. It's not about male approval. I've been replied to and quoted several times but I don't need to know how much they hate me.
I know weโre all worried about 11 and 13 but I think that it would be worthwhile to start contacting our MPs/DfE/Ofqual about arrangements for the current 10s and 12s.
Cross fingers for me please. I've submitted a proposal to our SLT for the re-introduction of a subject that is part of my department's curriculum. It's really important to me.
The much less stressful second child primary admission process has been concluded. Both children off to the same place from September. No more nursery fees from the end of July. The times they are a changing.
TW: not myself sorry, we lost a student on Tuesday and he was a good friend of several of my form. The past two days have been very tough. The students have been impressive in the care they have shown to each other and us. Please talk to people and take the time to listen.
The people who arrange these community clapping/singing/bell ringing things clearly donโt have small children! 8pm on Christmas Eve? Nope and thrice nope. Bed time starts at 6pm here. And no, they donโt get up later if I put them to bed later. Thatโs not how preschoolers work!
Dear EduTwitter,
Can we go back to the part of lockdown where there was loads of lovely subject specific chat and CPD loveliness. And remember:
1) itโs your timeline: curate it. You donโt need to engage with rude, personal attacks, block or mute. Engage with people who...1/4

It also makes a mockery of so much textual teaching in English. How are we meant to explore masculinity in a text (or indeed femininity) without discussing the social construct of gender. 'Come ye spirits that tend on mortal flesh, unsex me here.' 'First I must feel it like a man
Out of interest why do we insist on joined writing for handwriting? At KS3 and beyond the only issue is is it legible. I have seen so many more students with illegible handwriting than I used to and it isnโt from a lack of effort on the part of primary teachers. Far from it.
Just throwing this out there but if you teach year 10/11 English Literature you could do a lot worse than getting a copy of the 2021 edition of The Art of Writing English Literature Essays by

This is the problem with restorative approaches done badly in schools it just gives the aggressor another opportunity. I am so sorry that your son was put through this.
Lose that. They need help with finding their way and negotiating organisation and making new friends. They donโt need us to have low expectations of their work. The KS2 curriculum is complex and we do them a disservice by not building on it. End rant. 4/4
Do you know what I think is damaging to trainees and NQTs? That if only they meet every โunmet needโ in their class than behaviour will be perfect. This is a recipe for working yourself into the ground and feeling like a crap teacher when some of the students wonโt listen to you.
Iโm going to blog in defence of Luhrmanโs R+J and is place in teaching Shakespeare. I know nobody cares but the soundtrack is running through my head now (like those Young Hearts!) and I need to exorcise it. Watch this spaceโฆ
Feeling a bit rubbish today. People keep saying โjust enjoy your babiesโ when they hear I havenโt got the job. What I hear is โhow dare you have ambition for yourself now youโre a mumโ. Definitely not

I'm hoping that this works as a Dropbox link for my Christmas Paper 1. There isn't a mark scheme because I haven't written one and was just going to use the generic one.
I have a friend who has just finished reading Jane Eyre and is about to start Wuthering Heights and I am so excited for her. We all know Emily is better than Charlotte!

I maintain that for clerical errors like this a provider should be given 24 hours to correct the error.
We talk a lot at the minute about the pressure on heads. I would argue the pressure on admin staff in the current inspection form is way above their pay grade.
The โhard mathsโ argument for girls not taking physics is nonsense for so many reasons. Most notable would be the point that more girls do maths than do physics.
Confession: I have never been to Stratford Upon Avon. When travel is a possibility I am going to go for a weekend and see theatre and be an irritating Shakespeare tourist. Who do I know thatโs up that way that I can ask for top tips for things to do?
Been thinking a lot about the hideousness/pointlessness that is the current English Language GCSE. Getting tired of just moaning about it on here though. Thinking about what else can be done. As
@greeborunner
says it is not fit for purpose. Iโm not sure it knows what itโs for!
I just got an email from my NPQML provider. Iโm not going to lie that I was worried after the COVID disruption but I passed (31/32). Iโll take that. Thanks to all who helped me even though they may not have known they did.

So the 20th year of teaching begins. It would be lovely if long serving teachers could have a sabbatical. Would be fabulous to go back and immerse myself in my subject as a student again. If such a dream was possible what would you study? I would go with 1/2
Favourite poem for unseen discussion (no writing) with year 10? Mine would be something from Death of a Naturalist but keen to hear from others. Bonus points if no one dies in the poem? Needs to be short enough to fit onto one slide of a PowerPoint.
Iโve been thinking about lesson planning. As someone whoโs been teaching ages I often say or agree with people who say to trainees, โdonโt worry, you wonโt have to plan when youโve been doing this a while.โ And do you know what? Thatโs just not true. Well not completely. 1/5
@georgiaEtennant
And a follow from me. I thought GCs were meant to be GC. It's clothing. Nobody freaks out when women wear trousers, or is that the next wheeze?
Odd day. Only one in department today for various reasons. Havenโt really been able to share my NPQML achievement with anyone so oddly I donโt feel like it was a huge achievement. I know this is my issue but I feel awkward about success.
Probably the most effective thing the exam board could do to encourage more diversity in the GCSE offering in schools is to take An Inspector Calls off the spec. I know loads of us love it but until it goes I donโt think weโll see lots changing their modern texts.
