As I was riding pirates today - the realization hit me that Disney just doesn’t create fully immersive attractions on this scale any longer. Not sure they even know how. With the resources they have so much potential wasted.
This is going to be Disney's worst nightmare soon. Imagine the buzz this will have when it opens; instead, we get "Journey of Water" to look forward to (announced in 2019 - opening 2023?). Nothing in the pipeline to counter this. It's going to be a problem.
Aerial overview of Epic Universe. From the guest parking lot at top of this photo, to the in-park hotel rising in foreground.
Construction workers are using the parking lot.
I’ve been watching the reactions to this announcement and I’ve seen several saying Disney should announce something, etc. It just testifies to how bad Disney fans want real investment. Not retheme, not new festivals or fireworks, certainly not tear down and replace but real new.
JUST ANNOUNCED: Five immersive worlds. One amazing theme park. Universal Epic Universe opens 2025 at Universal Orlando Resort.

This is a perfect illustration of what’s been lost with current Disney. Look at the quality of the sign from 1992 vs the cheaply printed one of today. The attention to detail, even in the signs, is how they used to operate.
This is awesome. The Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ride testing signs that were put up overnight at Magic Kingdom Park are a very fun reference to the Splash Mountain ride testing signs from 1992. 👏
I don't understand why Disney would abandon creating beautifully detailed theming in the resorts to make them all bland Marriott clones. It truly baffles me that they wouldn't want to build such things as this. Can it be because they don't want to spend the money? IDK.
Love this. it’s amazing Disney hasn’t tried to close it. Animatronics are costly to maintain and the ride show mechanism which is so old must also be costly. Recently they’ve been trying to cut costs and AA figures are top of the list it’s assumed. A miracle we still have it.
Moana water effect. Already broken. Many of the other effects were half working as I was walking through, barely responding, etc. As predicted this wasn’t going to age well. This was and remains a colossal mistake and waste of resources.
What is sad about the D23/Dinosaur announcement is that Disney no longer does unique non-IP new concept-themed attractions anymore. They need to end the Chapek era nonsense with the IP rule (stupid) and let Imagineering create from scratch once again.
Look at how beautiful the park like setting of the hub used to be. The castle wasn’t pink - it was the correct color, and there was just space to breathe. Removing those planters encouraged people to stand and crowd. Something special was lost.
Today we take a look back at the Magic Kingdom Hub in the early 1990s.
One of the things I love about this photograph is how Cinderella Castle seems to be emerging from a hidden forest. Also, how can I leave out the twinkle lights in the trees during the night time!
Yep, and this is how it ends. I saw many youngsters who could care less on their phones. This is the damage that Disney has done. Kill the charm at the parks, Kill the nostalgia, and then young folks won't care or come back. Disney can offer the real, it should be better. Sad.
I really miss this at EPCOT. You can almost feel the CommuniCore vibe of it. The optimism for the future and the life that awaited us. Instead of saving this, they tore it down. They didn't see the potential of what this could have been again. The history and the memories. Sad.
Spent some time looking this over, and it really does look awful. A gigantic green mound next to Big Thunder. They couldn’t make this look more out of place if they tried.
The original jumping fountain in EPCOT is broken and is spraying on the concrete (as seen in the pic). The splash mesh is rotted. We have this vast fountain area, and rather than fix and refresh this, they felt it necessary to build Moana. This is wrong and frustrating.
This is DIS. I don't want to hear that everything is fine, Bob is fixing it, Disney is rebuilding, or any of it. It's the quality of the entertainment they are putting out, period. Walt said people feel quality, and for whatever reason, Disney isn't getting it.
The Magic of Themeing. I couldn't imagine the Disney of today building a hotel as themed as this. It really is amazing, and a favorite of mine. This is what people want and expect - not a Marriott lobby.
This is my favorite piece of “storytelling” on Disney property.
A small hot spring in the lobby turns into a stream in the courtyard, which turns into a series of waterfalls, which turns into the resort’s pool.
Below is the exact same view.. by that, I mean you are looking directly at a warehouse. The picture on the right is what Disney used to do to hide it. This illustrates just how far the quality has fallen. They know how to hide a building creatively but have chosen not to.
I remember when they made the Epcot update announcement. We were promised improvements that were "more Epcot" - all they did was rip out Epcot. Now we have rusted metal. What a downgrade.
This is absolutely awful. Disney should know better. It smacks of "the stupid visitors won't know any better." It reminds me of a John Hench story where this sort of thinking illustrates that you hate your customer. Or WDI didn't know any better, which is an even worse problem.
Overall, the WDI refurbishment of the Morocco pavilion has gone well however we have our first misstep and it’s a big one.
The elaborate planters once handcrafted by the King of Morocco’s artisans has been dumbed down using tile which belongs on the restroom floor at DHS.
Sure Connections is new, shiny, and what they thought we needed.... But this was better in every way. It was special because it was unique, and when you were in it you didn't feel like you were sitting in an airport food court. - No this was wonderful. I miss it.
Tokyo gets a 40-acre expansion - meanwhile, we put up with tear-down and replace at WDW and vague statements about something small they might build, if we are lucky. Oh, and they announced they are raising prices yet again.
NEW: Tokyo Disney Resort released new video of Fantasy Springs, including an early look at Peter Pan's Never Land, Rapunzel's Forest, and Frozen Kingdom. WOWWW. The land officially opens on June 6.
I think this is what is lacking in modern Disney. They simply want to go after the Hilton/Marriot types. They don't want to be this below anymore. The people they've put in charge seem to dislike the visuals of things like these. They don't understand what made them great.
A lot of discussions about Disney's 5th gate vs. building out capacity. Disney should have been building capacity for years, but they didn't. They let things sit. Now, anything new causes us to lose classic attractions. 5th gate is a safer option. We actually need both.
I'm glad I got to experience this version of Disney's Hollywood Studios. The current park is so far from this vision. This made more sense for this park than what we have today, it was easy to understand what it was trying to be.
Went to visit this for one final time, and say my goodbyes. Memories of being a kid with my parents laughing at this show. Its beyond sad that they are going to destroy it. Yes their will be bears but it won't be this. Another thing is lost forever. I'm glad we had it.
“Tiana” is the brainchild of Imagineers Carmen Smith, Charita Carter and Ted Robledo. According to sources of Mickey Views, these same Imagineers are now headed on to “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” to helm the creative on that project as well! Oh no…!
Look at how wonderful the Fountain of Nations used to be at EPCOT. Someone actually thought - "nah - we don't need that - rip it out." It wasn't broken. What a loss.
Magic Kingdom Monorail station has bird feces on the pipes above the monorail, spider webs and other mystery dirt as well. There was a time where they would have pressure washed this at night. Not a good look.
This sort of thing used to be unthinkable with Disney. The important thing to focus on is what’s driving people to seek something else in the first place. That gets to the heart of what’s wrong with Disney.
I liked it better as luau cove. Someone sat in a room and actually thought - yeah - that special thing we’ve had that makes the poly distinct? Let’s tear that down and build this. Sad.
This is absolutely terrible. I saw a bunch of people standing around and you can sense they were looking for a focal point and yet there’s this. Disney photopass were set in front of it. Like getting a photo of a planter is anything. Awful and embarrassing.
This one is going to be a bit of a rant but I really care about the Walt Disney Company and I am concerned about where bomb after bomb is going to lead them. The damage to the Disney brand is cumulative. The movies feed the parks, so weak product will impact for years yet.
Disney's
#Wish
was projected to land on top of box office charts over the Thanksgiving holiday. Instead, ticket sales fell short of expectations, and the animated film tumbled to third place behind "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" and "Napoleon."
Good to see Disney takes the absolute cheapest path to re-theme. When I think back to the Eisner years and a sense that Disney would always be a cut above with originality in what ever was built, and now we get overlays of existing buildings, with no concrete dates.
100 years is quite an accomplishment. My hope is that they quickly return back to the principles and quality that the company was established upon, otherwise I am not sure they will make another 100.
Today we celebrate a century of unforgettable magic! 🪄✨ 100 years ago today, in 1923, Walt and Roy Disney founded the company that would become The Walt Disney Company. We're celebrating
#Disney100
with 100 of our most iconic characters! Can you spot your favorites?
It’s amazing in a basically short time since he passed how far his company has drifted from Walt’s way of doing things. Walt seemed confident that his way and quality would continue on after him but it hasn’t. They are far from the mark now.
57 years ago today, we said goodbye to the ultimate dreamer, Walt Disney. His legacy lives on through the characters, parks, and joy he brought to the world. Here's to the man who dared to dream beyond imagination!
Underlighting was a problem for photo pass photos. This is more "antithesis imagineering" at it's best. We went from John Hench being a master of lighting/color, and now they can not even properly light a statue. It's astonishing the loss of skill in executing things like this.
Yes it was crazy at the poly today. I saw the same thing. Monorail line was crazy like that all day it never let up. Down on the first floor just about every chair was taken with people just sitting on their phones. Shops were packed. Not a good look for $700 and up a night.
Empty Stitch Building in the MK is a hole in TL and is prime real estate. Disney should put an attraction of some sort back. Not a meet and greet. Not a theatre show. Not a shop. Not a restaurant. Likely a simulator because of space constraints. Anything is better than abandoned.
This was built in the Eisner era when Disney's vision for WDW was that it would have about everything any visitor could want. They were not afraid to try things beyond parks and offered varied options to guests. We need more of that spirit of expansion back again.
Wonder if Disney will ever bring back Restaurant Marrakesh? The restaurants in Epcot created a sense of place and were one of the few ways that allowed visitors to experience a bit of the culture. Letting this sit is awful.
Imagine for a second, instead of the D23 announcements that we got - if Disney would have said - you know - removing toad was a bad idea - we are bringing it back to MK. People like nostalgia; announcing an easy-to-build cheap ride that people would love is simple.
"It doesn't matter if adults think a Disney film is bad because it's not made for adults" is the biggest cope.
Most Adults LOVED the majority of Classic Disney with their kids because they were GOOD Films. Ask them.
Modern Disney is a constant lowering bar that some adjust to.
From a Disney perspective, it is worse. Lots of tear-down and replace. My concern is what the response will be to Epic Universe. With this group, I don't believe it will be an improvement. The wait-and-see approach is going to lead to a frenzy of ill-thought-out moves.
I think all the customer mistreatment and unfriendly policies, cost, and destruction of the nostalgia and charm is finally catching up with them. They have nothing in the pipeline, and universal is truly coming on strong. Not good.
I'm honestly surprised Disney isn't doing away with reservations much, much sooner than 2024. It offers way too much public insight into just how slow their parks are.
Disney's Hollywood Studios used to have some charm. Sometimes it's the little details that make a place memorable. It feels like we don't get this anymore with what they build.
Indeed. Look at how beautiful that fountain was. What a significant loss that Disney took this away from us for rusted metal and a planter that looks like....
Looking at this comparison the new looks like the world of the future was left abandoned and overgrown. Gone is the futuristic optimism and meticulously manicured for the naturalistic. We got trees.. wonderful. Ugh.
Now, the mainstream media (Forbes) is starting to pick up the story of the negative buzz around this attraction. It's turning into a massive embarrassment.
I look at this and think of all the things they could have spent money on to “fix” at EPCOT yet they spent on this. This was no doubt costly to do and I’m just at a loss as to why we needed this. It’s just baffling. How was this the biggest need?
Aerial look at World Celebration. A 5-ring EPCOT logo will be at center, with the walls forming the globe in the logo.
Arrow at what seems to be a basin.
Continuing the theme of how dirty the parks are - this is in the line for soarin in EPCOT. This HVAC return hasn’t been cleaned in ages. The level of dust is disgusting for an air system.
Im on team Walt. I want Disney to go back to what it once was and operate according to Walt's principles..entertainment without social crusading, respect for nostalgia and their own history, and fulfillment of the promises of EPCOT. Pricing that average families can afford, and
Disney CEO Bob Iger has fired back at Ron DeSantis’ ridiculous claims that “woke” Disney is trying to sexualize kids. “The notion that Disney is in any way sexualizing our children quite frankly is preposterous and inaccurate.”
I’m on Team Mickey. How about you?
I’m really going to miss this area if Disney heavily alters the river or removes it. Certain basic things a castle park should have - and this is one of them.
The aesthetic of the newer renovated Disney rooms feel like a hospital room. No theme, no nothing other than just stripped down. It’s sad that we’re going to be stuck with this for the next 10ish years. Another decline by degrees. What we had was better.
Wow that is going to look awful. Nothing like a forest in the desert of the American Southwest. (The water tower Tiara really makes it though lol)..Terrible.
The loss of this was sad, and shouldn't have happened. I would have rather them expand the lobby out the back. Plenty of room out there to add some volume to the lobby, without destorying this. This was epic, and a really terrible loss.
If you ever saw this space in person you can smell it right now. It’s hard to believe but it’s already been 10 years since Disney changed the lobby of the Polynesian. Did you ever get to see the original rainforest? It’s iconic to us.
"This rant is essentially a plea to the organization as a whole to stop trying to be the Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, Hilton, etc and go back to being Disney." - AMEN to that. That is exactly the problem. Once Disney becomes like everywhere else, it ceases to be special.

Here’s my point:
I grew up going to Caribbean Beach. The emotion I got in that resort was nothing like I could get anywhere else.

On a recent visit, I saw this statue of Roy. It made me remember how critical Roy was to buying and building WDW. Walt had the idea, but Roy made it happen instead of retiring. Glad they didn't forget him. Next time you're in the MK, stop and give a nod to this monument to Roy.
Sad to note the passing of Disney Legend Dick Nunis. Truly when he ran the parks everything was better. His contributions to Walt Disney World are legendary. Another loss of a connection back to Walt.
Dick Nunis ponders the "Euro Disneyland Hotel" during opening ceremonies. He had fought bitterly against it. Dick was a passionate believer in protecting Walt's vision and ran the parks like Rolex watches. To me, in many ways you were Disney! Passed at 91.
This is just bizarre. If they think the attraction was so evil that it had to be ripped out why would they give “subtle” nods to it? The fans of splash won’t be happy with just that (they want the attraction as it was), and if it’s “ok” enough to nod to then why rip it out?
There was a time when we had an actual vintage working penny arcade, a cinema, a real bank, and swan boats, all as part of the MS experience. It added a layer of charm and interest and made it feel like a real town before Disney felt everything needed to be turned into a shop.
I’m sure it will be a popular picture spot. I wish that the company would honor the man by returning to his principles. As Roy said “Walt Disney World is a tribute to the philosophy and life of Walter Elias Disney”. The whole place should be his monument.
Walt Disney Imagineering shared video of crews installing the "Walt the Dreamer" statue at EPCOT. The statue and World Celebration Gardens will open to guests on Dec. 5.
This is one of the attractions I’d love to see them bring back. They will never do it because animatronics cost $$ but it’s one of those unique Disney things that’s gone. Given today’s technology they could do something wonderful with the concept.
MICKEY MOUSE REVUE 1971
This legendary ride at Disney World began in 1971, was never at Disneyland, and moved to Tokyo in 1980, closing in 2009.
It featured famous songs from every legendary Disney film. Ironically the grand finale is the one song new Disney banned!
Remember when I said this wasn't going to hold up? Been open for 5 months, it's broken, and they already need to refurbish it? A water attraction that is now a concrete walk-through. This is absolutely awful. Wrong thing, wrong place, not quality at all.
Soo…what is the significance of these bottles on the drop of Tiana’s Bayou (Salt Mine) Adventure? And what’s gonna happen to these bottles during Florida’s infamous rainstorms with high winds and rain going sideways?
#WaltDisneyWorld
Perfect illustration of the new direction Disney has taken. The hotels now are indistinguishable from any chain brand. At this point the only advantage is location because goodness knows it’s not theming or perks. It does look like the Conrad - great call out.
I look at this and think.. Was this really what EPCOT was in dire need of? Was this exactly what was needed to refresh and "Fix" EPCOT? Was this worth the money to spend on this?
Universal is building a major show fountain while Disney ripped out the Fountain of Nations at Epcot. I wonder at what point Disney will admit that the V planter needs to go. Fountains add so much kinetic energy to an area; they really are wonderful special things.
Aerial photo of water cascading at rocky features next to the Epic Universe show fountain.
At center are concrete forms for a compass rose type of star in the walkway.
"AP's" are still Reservation based, no park hop until after 2pm, Photopass is not included, and for this, we pay $1400. To thank us we are allowed to attend an "exclusive" SHOPPING event so we can spend even more! Color me not impressed. End the limits!
Convenient that they “happened” to be videoing Bob at the exact moment of doing the Disney cast member thing of picking up stray trash. Makes him seem so approachable. Cares about the parks etc. What a staged “event”…
I really miss how Epcot at night in this area used to be. I loved the openness of it, the fiber optics in the pavement, the fountain, the background loop music. Navigating wasn’t confusing. It was something special - and better.
Bob Iger says there are 'untapped stories just waiting to be brought to life' at Disney Parks with $42 billion going to expand capacity.. $42 billion.. $60 billion.. it’s all meaningless. It’s all going overseas. WDW gets tear down and replace.
Bob Iger just stated that new Disney parks attractions in the past used to be based on "very old IP" or no IP. After that, he reiterated that the company will continue to focus almost exclusively on IP-based attractions.
When you look at the legends who were there, Eisner, Nunis, Card Walker, Roy E Disney - this was truly a high point in Disney's park history. We are so far from this now, and the execution has declined. It's scary - to go from this to what we have today. A better time.
EDL Opening Day 1992. George Lucas downloading his first impressions to Eisner and the gang. Sharon Disney (red hair) and Roy E Disney standing by, Dick Nunis looks on. What a day!
Sometimes is the quiet spaces that make a Disney park special. Not every shop has to be an emporium. I really miss the Writer's Stop. It's a shame they couldn't figure out a way to work it into Grand Ave.
Look at how much better the original design symmetry was on the left. The original is better in every way than what they are doing to EPCOT. It's just sad when you look at this. What a mess.

This is just sad. They basically offer a themed sign and an empty stage with a few entertainers and expect anyone will be impressed with this? When I first saw it I thought it was a joke.
Exactly. This was a huge decline in Disney service. Package delivery was a wonderful thing for guest satisfaction and also encouraged people to buy more since you didn’t have to lug things around. Another cost elimination gone a-rye.
Oh hey I just remembered another thing disney world took away, which I didn't even know about til my visit. If you were staying at one of their hotels, they used to take purchases back for you for free, now they tell you to buy a locker which isn't even very convenient
This is a perfect example of what is wrong with Disney today. On the one hand, they realize the history of the Hatbox Ghost and want to curry the favor of fans based on that history. (Why bring this into the attraction other than that they know people love the history and lore of

Is a new 22-minute+ heavy audio-animatronic, fully immersive traveling theatre-style tour attraction possible? or is this dead from Disney's view? Is the future always going to be screen-based, with smaller vehicles, and a short run time? Interested in people's take on this.
Not sure what we gained in the shopping space was worth what we lost in Atmosphere and place-making. Sometimes it's the quiet areas that make Disney special. I think I liked it better as a street.
Amazing how well the trees hides the show building from the parking lot. This proves Disney knows how to hide a show building and can when they have the will to do so.
Aerial look at the Dinosaur show building in Animal Kingdom, and the proximity to the park entrance.
The ride track in the show building is same as the ride track of the Indiana Jones Adventure attractions.
Happy Birthday WDW, Let us remember as Roy said “Walt Disney World is a tribute to the philosophy and life of Walter Elias Disney … and to the talents, the dedication and the loyalty of the entire Disney organization that made Walt Disney’s dream come true”
