My Key Stage 3 Recommended Reads for 2023-2024 is ready! I've spent several days putting this list together to ensure it is dynamic & diverse, with something for all students. I've now added interactive 'you choose' books (popular with reluctant readers)
Spent the day organising our library as it had gotten quite cluttered. I have a hard time getting rid of books so still some work to be done but looking nice. Fiction section (2nd photo) is in alphabetical order. Last photo is downstairs library in same room (living room).
I love my job and my school--but I feel that if I don't work at least 6-12 hours over the weekend, I fall behind, and that leads to stress. Anyone else feeling the same? Asking as I'm frantically working now, since I'm going to London tomorrow to bring my son his uni stuff!
It can be hard to know how to support struggling readers in the classroom. This slide (from a larger presentation I delivered to our staff today) might be useful to some
My 2020-21 recommended reads folder is ready! . It includes my *new* list for Yrs 9-11 with BAME titles highlighted ; updated Y7/8 & Y5-7 lists; verse novels; audio; dystopian; isolation; science; 'cry' books; animals; complex issues!
My Year 7&8 2021-2021 list is ready! It has taken me HOURS, but has many new recommendations & is more diverse than ever. New categories include environment, animals, graphic novels/verse novels/super readable & immigrant/refugee experiences. Click here:
'High quality texts most efficient way to teach sophisticated language.'
@MaryMyatt
is advocating reading aloud complex texts. Music to my ears! Look at this data!
#rEDBrum
I've created my own website! I've included dozens of resources, but it's definitely a work in progress, with the blog & more links to fabulous edu-Twitter people +favourite books to come. I'm not tech savvy so this has been a real challenge for me.
#bekind
Every secondary school teacher (not just English!) should have this book published by
@EngMediaCentre
. So many powerful short stories and novel extracts to get students to think critically about important issues -- and to inspire them to read books by these authors.
Here's my presentation for
@researchEDLeics
from yesterday. It's about supporting struggling readers in secondary schools, and includes links to blogs, research & videos. As always in education, I learn from others working in this field, so thank you!
Here's my 2021-2022 booklists folder with revamped lists; features high quality fiction including many diverse/own voices recommendations. Folder has Y5/6/7; Year 7/8; KS4&5; audiobooks; top picks with my short reviews; various challenge lists. More soon!
Our brand new library window decals are amazing! These are some of our students' favourite books and yet more evidence of our reading culture. Seeing the students' excited reactions to the windows has been lovely (and I cried happy tears when I saw it this morning)
@KAs_Wantage
I've revamped my Y7/8 recommended reads. I've been diversifying my reading for a few years & this is my most diverse list (but still need to read more!). I've highlighted BAME authors to help anyone looking for fab reads which also improve representation.
My final Word of the Week PPT for 2018-19 using Greek &Latin word roots is finished! My goal has been to improve vocabulary using tier 2/3 words from across subjects; to broaden horizons &increase general knowledge; & to encourage Ss to explore words.
#KAs
We are using Knowledge Organisers in every subject and are providing CPD to staff about how to use these effectively. Here is my PP with my top five tips on how to use KO's effectively. The last slide has web links with fabulous blogs about using KO's'.
We are starting academic reading lessons for Y10. I've created a ppt with info/overview for teachers + sample lesson using a BLM article. Bits in red only for teachers. Includes slides modelling what 'active reading' looks like.
We got the call! We are excited to show what we are doing with academic & independent reading, and how we support struggling readers. Looks like reading will be a deep dive! I am nervous, but hoping our years of hard work is evident. See you on the other side!
I've been beavering away for hours this weekend & my 2020 Key Stage 4 Recommended Reads list is ready with many new titles + favourites/classics/diverse authors. Here is the direct link or you can find it with my other lists here:
Here is the Y7 Reading Development/AR booklet I've designed--a big piece of work with our approaches to reading; interactive sections; 18 extracts to be used as starters & for discussion (ChatGPT t/f +recommendations). In word/pdf:
My 2018-2019 booklists are ready: KS3, KS4, difficult issues, animal books, books to make you cry, dystopian, around the world, visual books for reluctant readers +more. I added lots of fabulous BAME authors and books with strong female protagonists. Enjoy!
Here are my key literacy questions for 2019-20 for Y7-13 along with supporting strategies. I've used some new EEF guidance to expand my thinking on disciplinary literacy & will develop CPD for this, though we still have a tight focus on reading & vocab.
Here's my latest 'reluctant readers' advice letter for parents with some new ideas. It's part of a larger package of information we are sending to parents of Y7/8 students with reading results & explanations, plus two pages of FAQs
Current status: 🐥🐥🐥🐥🐥/🐥🐥🐥🐥🐥. I told kids to be dressed when their brother came home (e.g. not in pj's). We came back from the airport with them dressed in formal clothing! Pretty proud of this crew. My heart is full. ❤
Here's my Challenge CPD PPT exploring academic reading, with a focus on pre-reading strategies. Some new material + some from my
@NewVoices3
PPT. I've put the amazing
@SPryke2
's complete 'Tyrants' lesson as an appendix as he used my methods so effectively!
Here's a spreadsheet our fab library assistant made using my new Yr 7/8 recommended reads list; it will be especially useful if you use AR - has book levels/quiz numbers/age categories. I also asked her to include a column for BAME authors + genre column.
Looking for books to recommend? A book title alone isn't enough & blurbs are insufficient, so I've started writing short weekly reviews of *some* of my favourite (new & old) books for our enrichment bulletin. 13 weeks worth divided into key stages here.
Word of the Week PP slides for tutors until Feb (thanks to
@Mr_P_Hillips
for his excellent word roots work-an inspiration for this). The PP is for Y7-13 with no apologies about the level of difficulty! Includes word usage questions, thinking questions+more
This is a thread with my 2021 reads! I started the year with this extraordinary wordless graphic novel by Shaun Tan. The narrative & illustrations are complex & open to reader interpretation but at its heart it's a deeply empathetic exploration of the immigrant experience. KS3-5
And here is my new Key Stage 4&5 recommended reads list for 2021-2022 with many genres, incl mystery/thrillers, literary fiction, memoirs/bios, environment/eco novels, dystopian, hist fiction, humorous & complex/thought-provoking situations+ relationships.
I've created a 'top 10' list of free links/ideas/resources to encourage reading for pleasure & progress at home (this has been sent to all parents). It is specific to our context and is written in a personal style, but could be adjusted for other schools.
I've already shared my overview of academic reading (written for teachers): . I've now collected a wide range of (free) articles (some edited down) using my suggested links. Folder is here: . Hand is here:
Here is yesterday's presentation on academic reading. Full lessons for subjects are on my website, as is Register, Read, Respond: A huge thank you to the organisers of
@NewVoices3
& to everyone who encouraged me throughout the day!
Here's a letter I wrote for parents with tips for reluctant readers (on a bit of a roll today as I work in the sunshine) - I've used this for years but tweak it a bit each year.
It was a brilliant day at
@rEDSurrey2022
yesterday -- thank you to the organisers and speakers! My presentation on Building a Reading Culture is here, with many hyperlinks to resources & reseach.
How can we ensure vocabulary instruction is effective? I've been thinking about this for 2 years & spent part of the summer of 2017 creating this PP based on Beck, Willingham & Allen's vocab strategies. I will now use this for our vocab coordinator CPD:
Word of the Week using Greek & Latin word roots (Sep-May so far). Each root has 3 tier 2/3 linked words, usage questions & thinking questions. I'm working to build knowledge in many subjects! Thanks to
@Mr_P_Hillips
for word root idea/list.
@KAs_Wantage
How can you build a reading culture in secondary school? We have worked hard on this at KA's with some fabulous results - and here is a detailed summary of what we are doing along with a list of barriers that schools might face.

Here's the newest version of my reading for pleasure & progress PPT w 5 year plan; why we focus on reading; where we came from vs where we are now; how we inspire/encourage Ss; how we address reading barriers; how we develop academic reading; big Q's+more
Interested in literacy? Reading for pleasure &progress? Vocabulary? Academic reading? People often ask for recommendations for sites/blogs/accounts to follow, so I have created an extensive list on my website divided into categories. Who else should I add?
I recorded a presentation for
@HfLSecondaryEng
on struggling & reluctant readers, and am allowed to share my video + ppt (with links) . I'm a huge fan of the work
@HertsEnglish
does with fluency --they offer fabulous courses on this!
Yesterday I was privileged to host 15 teachers/leaders/librarians. We explored three areas: 1) Building a reading culture/reading for pleasure 2) Interventions for struggling readers 3) Academic reading across subjects. Here is the PPT I dipped in/out of
Youngest of 5 with older siblings who have all been successful. He has today received exceptional GCSE results--but I am even more proud of the fact that during Lockdown (with no input from us as we are busy), he has written his 1st novel, waking up every day at 8am to write. ❤
I've spent a few days working on my website with a focus on adding new resources; updating & categorising links to organisations & (many!) people working on reading; and developing the reading research page (still a work in progress). Hope it is helpful.
I'm creating a doc & video on reading ages required for GCSE exams. Includes an analysis of exam papers in all subjects. Will share! If anyone has worked on this before, I'd be keen to exchange ideas. Also looking for info on 'average' RA trajectory in KS4. Anyone looked at this?
Teaching is such a rollercoaster. Some Fridays I'm buzzing as I know I've been able to make a difference. Other Fridays-like today-I am feeling demoralised after a rough week where I've given it my all, and it isn't enough, and I'm scrolling through 'life after teaching' posts😩
21 years ago today, my sister Clare (age 26) was struck by a car & killed. This is the last photo of the sibs together (Clare is in the centre). Today I shared this Frost poem w my Y11 class--most impactful of my life. I also shared this essay Clare wrote:
I've created a PP with 12 key multi-purpose Macbeth quotes linked to themes. For each one, there's a slide with an image (visual prompt-memorisation practice) and on the next slide is the quote, themes and some context/info (kept it simple)
@Team_English1
Reading for pleasure & progress has been a top priority at KA's, and yesterday the DfE came to see what we are doing in this area. We are hugely proud of our reading journey! Here's the PPT I created for the visit with multiple links to relevant docs
#KAs
I've selected 12 key quotes from ACC for dual coding & have linked these to themes/added context (this is why I asked the Marley question!). It is a more detailed companion to my Macbeth one (). Hope it is helpful!
@Ebeneze11045162
Here is our 2019 Summer Reading Challenge for Year 7 & 8. This has been posted to all Rising Year 7's attending KA's in September and it will also be in their transition booklet. We do a staff reading bingo as well but I still need to create that one!
I've just created our 2022 Summer Reading Bingo challenge (parts of which link to our character development scheme). Seven years of summer reading challenges are in Dropbox if you are interested!
I've added a *new* recommended audiobooks list + updated many booklists to reflect recent reading/new titles/Twitter recommendations including KS2/3, Year 7/8, KS4, dystopian, Sci-fi/fiction linked to science, books to make you cry & complex issues. Enjoy!
I am American (voted!) and I told my Y11 students that I will be very tired tomorrow. They know me well but cheekily asked who I was rooting for. I told them that Donald Trump consistently uses comma splices in his tweets. Every head in the class shook their head in disgust.

My new & revamped 'Helping Struggling Readers' PPT for our 12 volunteers is ready. This one has an exploration of the components of reading; examples of successes last year; & detailed information about how the programme works. It's on my website + here
Do you want to improve reading at your school? Together with

Yesterday my daughter finished university studies and is guaranteed a First Class Honours degree in Economics from Exeter. We held a graduation ceremony complete with a procession, commencement speech, name call & handing of diploma, champagne, a party--and of course a cap toss!
Thank you to all attending my presentation today at
@researchEDBrum
! I focussed on practical strategies to support struggling readers in secondary school. The ppt (with many hyperlinks to resources, research & policy) is here

28 years married today! He is Dutch and I am American, and together we have lived in 6 countries -- adding 5 extraordinary kids along the way. It has been and remains an incredible voyage. Now and then...
My twins graduated from university this summer: Rebecca from Kings College London, Thomas from Univ. of Birmingham--both with 1st class degrees. Daughter didn't get an in- person graduation, so we did the ceremony at home complete with speeches, diploma awarding & cap-throwing 1/
Reading barriers explained to subject teachers - a short explanation for teacher planners with some practical strategies. Of interest to literacy leaders?

Several people asked about our approaches to reading. We are using this Venn Diagram (taken from Ofsted, but matches what we were already doing) Each of the sections is detailed in this ppt, with hyperlinks to other resources/sources. Hope it is helpful!
Welcome to my 2022 reading thread!

: And Still I Rise by Maya Angelou. I started the year with a slow-read of this powerful collection of 32 poems, most of which were new to me. Some poems are devastating; others are empowering. All have emotional and lyrical depth. Beautiful.
Lots of interest in our new bespoke library window decals. This is is view of some of windows from outside -- inside is just tinted and light shines through. Company that did this for us is . We love these windows!
Summer Reading Bingo 2020 is here, with multiple links to different booklists & sites. My focus is on Year 7/8 as those are the students who tend to partcipate in our yearly reading bingo. I'll be making a staff version as well! Help yourself:
Here's my PPT advocating reading 'real world' articles to empower students, with pre-reading/during reading/after reading strategies+explicit teaching of vocab. Includes sample lesson I team taught with science teacher (about bionic plants- tough article).
The new
@GL_Assessment
report is a goldmine for Lit. Coordinators & SLT. In addition to research (analysing data from 370,000 students) about correlations between reading attainment & GCSE outcomes, the report has many tips to improve students' literacy.
I'm working on an academic reading challenge workshop as part of our staff CPD. I would love more ideas for 'real world' online articles from magazines/sites like the ones on the right. Any more ideas? Sports, Geog, RE & Art sites/articles esp -though it needs to be free content.
Here is the latest version of Register, Read and Respond - now finished until 20 April. After tutor feedback, I've shortened the texts for this round. One advantage of updating R,R&R at several points in the year is that I can include topical texts!
We are making KS3/4/5 reading challenge lists in all subjects (non-fiction or fiction). We particularly need ideas for Maths, Science, PE, Psychology, E&P, Geography, MFL, Arts, Politics, Sociology. Ideas welcome! Here is my English KS3/4 one
I've updated & re-organised the resources page of my website with conference/online presentations on topics linked to reading, plus many materials I've created to support reading for pleasure, academic reading, struggling readers & more. Hope it's helpful!
New: Here's the PP for a CPD session on explicit teaching of vocabulary (part of a 'challenge' series I am co-leading). Obv there was lots of explanation with slides but hopefully it makes sense. Business, Geog & Media teachers helped deliver session
#KAs
Went to prom this evening with our lovely Y11 students. It was outdoors with an open gazebo & lateral flow tests. So delighted that they could experience this. My own first prom was 40 years ago in the US. This was better! Love the confidence and resilience of kids today
We are doing a whole school Academic Reading enrichment session next week using
@MarcusRashford
's (MBE!) letter to MP's. We are exploring our core value of responsibility this term & Rashford epitomises that value. It's here, with lots of notes for tutors
This week I led a cross-curricular training for teachers of struggling readers. I used images only on some slides, but full text explanations are in the appendices. I'm excited about 'Rewordify', which a PE teacher found and shared with me!
Register, Read & Respond for tutorials for Years 7-13 is now updated through February. It has fiction & nf academic reading, vocab work & pre/post reading q's. Another thanks to
@RealGingerella
for the brilliant R&R concept and some of the Term 1/2 texts.
My Greek/Latin Word of the Week PP is now ready until Easter (with thanks to
@Mr_P_Hillips
for word roots). 3 linked words for each root; + word usage & thinking questions. Has been hugely successful in tutor times & words are sent to parents
@KAs_Wantage
I've finally managed to update my website so that it includes the resources I have developed in the last few months (both whole school literacy and English). Still need to develop the research page, update some booklists & write a blog entry - Feb break?
In Summer School for Y7, I did a library session with my reading-enthusiast colleague
@MrsKateWigley
. Among other things, the session included a 'why read' component. We spent 15 mins discussing this (with retrieval q's after). I've now created a slide to summarise key points.
Here's a 25 minute whole school Christmas literacy session with some oracy work, then either engaging w 'Twas The Night Before Christmas using J Brett's amazing illustrations OR learning about scary Xmas traditions around Europe.
Thank you for the many responses; this is exactly what I love about Twitter! I'm creating a grid incorporating some of what I have learned from all of you (will require modelling!). The ones in bold are the first port of call for students struggling with effect. Suggestions?
Reading P&C mocks and some higher attaining students seem to be shoehorning in comments about effects on the reader. 'This makes the reader hooked...'or'This makes the reader feel resentment...' Does anyone have a method to teach students to be more precise when exploring effect?
Last summer I put together a big presentation on vocabulary instruction. There are lots of practical ideas using before/during/after reading strategies based on Beck/Allen/
@DTWillingham
here:
I've created a new Year 7/8 recommended reads list. It's much changed from my previous version with even more diversity &great authors/books. (I'll make a separate list for classics).The list is under 2019-20 booklists in the RfP section. More lists later!
I'm running a 'challenge' CPD
@KAs_Wantage
; this year it's a literacy focus, with sessions on academic reading, writing & oracy. Last week I delivered the writing workshop, largely based on
@TheWritingRevol
concepts, supported by ideas from Twitter/blogs!
I just found my favourite ever thank you note -- from a severely dyslexic child in a bottom set 2 yrs ago. I had decided to focus on teaching tier 2 vocab (through War Horse); they were so proud of their burgeoning vocabulary. It showed me how empowering learning vocab could be!
