We are doing the Icelandic tradition of Jolabokaflod this year where we exchange books as gifts on Christmas Eve and go to bed with hot chocolate to read. I read about this tradition and thought it was the best idea ever. Bought the kids’ books today.
@stuboo
No one should ever have to discuss any aspect of their care with anyone (I’m thinking nurse, receptionist) within earshot of other patients. Also, patients should not be able to listen to phone calls or dictation. You wouldn’t believe the things I’ve heard while sitting.
@stuboo
And do not put a scale in a public/visible place. Also..weights should be subject to consent and only done when relevant like any other procedure.
I am seeing tweets from all over Canada right now about overwhelmed service workers, absent staff, and closed businesses because of COVID infections. So can someone please explain to me how removing all COVID protections is good for the economy?
@TimHoustonNS
It took my husband 2 hours and 20 min to get to work on the bus this morning to his office that is 20 min by car from our house. In case you are wondering why more people won’t switch from cars to transit in Halifax.
@thepedipals
From years of doing the rounds of specialists with a preteen/teen with chronic pain, I can tell you that suggestions of avoiding simple carbs, doing yoga, and avoiding screen time are likely not being welcomed by your target audience in the way you intend.
@LeilaAnasazi
@SamanthaaaReece
As an OB/GYN I’d like to say that the majority of us are hard to shock, have a sense of humor, and think we have seen it all. So when we see something new we are usually impressed. You can take that as a challenge.
@Lianne_Rood
Climate scientists are fairly unanimous in the fact that the planet will be nearly uninhabitable within 60-70 years, and increasing bad between now and then, but sure, let’s rant about Tim Horton’s lids. That’s the real problem today.
@clhubes
During my newborn’s first bath at the hospital, their little face clearly said “this is a bad idea, this feels unsafe, do you even know what you’re doing, are you certified for this, I’m gonna drown, aren’t I” and I knew right then that I’d handed down the anxiety gene.
@guapo61
@Faithnco1016
Mine cried at me out the window as I was getting in the car the other day 😢. So he came on school pick up for a couple of days but was gripping the seatbelt holder for dear life and quivering so he’s staying home again. Chihuahuas are….complex.
@mimmymum
I’m not letting her meet my child after all the disappointment and hurt she has caused in my house. Plus I doubt my kid wants to meet her at this point.
Could we try declaring Fiona over and saying we are learning to live with her and see if that works? Some people seem to think that gets rid of big problems.
@drcopps
It’s not just “the doctors”. I tried my whole career to get an equipped procedure room and trained nurse to give sedation during colposcopy and other gyne procedures and the hospital wouldn’t approve it. It “wasn’t necessary” because none of the old male docs asked for it.
@melizwalls
This massive increase in invasive Group A strep is happening across the world.
It seems to be a combination of a mutation in the strep
And immune dysregulation from recent COVID infection
It’s another consequence of letting COVID rip
@Fitz_ly
I am an OB/GYN. People don’t realize how much bleeding a miscarriage can cause (along with everything else awful). I’ve seen ER docs and surgeons who manage traumas and stabbings and gunshots panic at the blood loss from a miscarriage. It can be massive and life threatening.
@AshleyGWinter
I could easily do this. I have an MD. But I would get a “let’s talk about anxiety” I have to be careful to dumb down my history for most docs so they feel like they’re discovering it.
Glad you took it better. It’s because you’re a girl.
@ThePOTSPostman
My fog is episodic but I spin in circles in the kitchen. Literally spin unknowingly for minutes, not knowing how to start a task like making a sandwich
I am a trained surgeon. I led teams through life-threatening emergencies. Not being able to figure out lunch is terrifying.
@DocBLaw
@MigsRunner
“Since you haven’t been able to call back, you are clearly overwhelmed too. In light of this extraordinary situation, I’ve taken the liberty of closing the ER and diverting patients in your name. It’s a safety issue as I’m sure you agree”. Gets them to call back real quick
Canadians who think a private tier of healthcare is a great thing, this is what you are bringing us.
You are also bringing us a host of insurance companies who will fight tooth and nail to not pay any of this. (Ask any American)
Let’s not go this route
Here’s the cost of a heart attack and its resulting surgery.
PS- This does NOT include charges from either doctor, the helicopter emergency evacuation, six weeks of cardiac rehab, or three months of lost wages.
@therealphwu
@alifuckingburns
Not happening in Canada. And I haven’t heard reports of it happening anywhere else. Tbh, I have zero plans to get on an American plane in the foreseeable future.
@davidnnaumann
I think if your undies and socks were spared and you didn’t have to throw them out, (and you keep some at the hospital for such occasions) you are still at amateur soaking level.
Signed an obstetrician.
@chick_in_kiev
Maybe no comments on weight. I once did a weight loss “journey”. People’s exuberance about my appearance and change in the way I was treated was kinda hurtful. I’m now having scary unexplained weight loss with scary health issues. I really, really don’t want exuberance.
@DrCasteelEM
I once explained to my very scared 4 year old that we didn’t have to be scared of ghosts hurting us because there was no billing code for that.
If it had ever happened, even once, I was sure there would be a billing code
@arghavan_salles
As far as I can see, that divorce was caused by that man never getting out of that chair
He got replaced by a cute little animal and I applaud that
@cnlester
I was a gymnast. Not even a particularly good gymnast. And kids around me had potentially life-altering injuries all the time. As well, many girls trained hard enough to significant weight loss and hormonal suppression. This isn’t good for you, but there aren’t senate hearings
@jtrebach
People will put anything in a tissue in a purse and bring it. Don’t ask me for details, but trust me, I know.
Have not met a purse snake (thankfully)-I’ve not worked anywhere where snake bites were a thing you saw often in gynecology-but I’m certain they’ve happened.
@JillianHortonMD
The head of our childrens hospital in Halifax was in the news today spouting immunity debt as a cause for the hospital overcrowding. He told everyone to get flu shots. Didn’t mention our abysmal COVID vaccine rates in children, didn’t mention masking. I’ve lost any faith.
@OGdukeneurosurg
One of the keys to medical practice is always, always suppressing your instinct to run away screaming when you are the one who is supposed to help.
@waflyer
@KaraPepperMD
@dremilyportermd
My first rotation of clerkship was cardiology. I got to admit a cardiologist with unstable angina 😳. He rounded the next morning on his own patients in his bathrobe with his IV. They sent us to wheel his charts The indoctrination starts early.
@Bakari_Sellers
Hello :) I’m Canadian, but I’ve vacationed in the US and have eaten in a number of the better-known American chain restaurants. I’d like to offer my skills as US ambassador to any friendly island nation with a lovely climate and embassy.
@JL_Lycette
I am just now taking inventory of all the many times I was disregarded as a mom with an MD, told it was fine, and also told it was likely just my poor parenting as kiddo and I are now trying at 17 to get a label and accommodations for blazingly obvious autism spectrum issues.
@MyNamyIsAmy
I have likely been going to bars longer than any of the people in this post have been alive. But I kind of assumed that bars kind of defined themselves and the people who go there by the music they played…if you don’t like it, then you’re in the wrong bar.
@TJackPonder
@healthpolicygrp
My mom did a Ph.D while I was in med school. I have no idea how anyone does it. I went to classes she disappeared into the basement with a pot of coffee and most of the world’s literature from the last 1000 years. Then she went to Zimbabwe for 4 months and then wrote a thesis.
@cbouzy
People have tweeted this every few days since 2015. Trump has gone through zero things. My dog has gone through more things. And my dog is a sweet little guy.
@BrianKingNeo
@DGlaucomflecken
We had an emergency visit for a toddler in Paris with an ear infection. At midnight. We had to pay and be reimbursed by our travelers insurance. We got the bill about a month after we got home. It was $32 CAD. What would it have been in the US?
@morninggloria
I found, as an OB/GYN, that when I had a situation where I felt I should tell someone, like when their plans for pregnancy and the post-partum period were way too ambitious….they just didn’t believe me. No one else was telling them how hard it was so I was clearly just nuts.
@bethnew
My son at 3 told me his missed his “other mommy”. When I was puzzled, he said before me, he had been in an other mommy’s tummy, but she died before he was born. They went to heaven together and then later he ended up in my tummy. 😳😳😳😳
@SMacMillanMD
@JJcolemanMD
I miscarried while I was the OB resident managing the miscarriages. No one suggested I go home. I arranged my own blood work, lay on the floor of the bathroom a couple of times, and finished a 30 hour shift. It was the longest 30 hours of my career.
@Squidraphenia
@erinstwitsexual
Yes, I was trained strenuously to be polite at all cost. My mom was too. We are both trying to shed all this conditioning together. She’s better at it than I am though… she’s getting fierce.
I actually think the Dalhousie street party issue has some roots in our drinking age of 19.
Students start at university at 18. No one can legally host drinking/drunk first year students so they all end up in the streets
I went to undergrad in Quebec. This didn’t happen
@JohnPurakal
@kari_jerge
And the off going team lied about their credentials, replaced all the staff with their criminal buddies and set the building on fire
@jtrebach
My only explanation for them not taking him to the hospital is that they already know what’s happening.
Like it was an absence seizure and he is known to have them.
It’s not like those guys don’t get the best of the best care and I doubt he thinks he’s invincible anymore
@TraumaSoapBoxes
I went majorly hypotensive, blacked out, woke up, and vomited on one of my favorite L and D nurses during my spinal. And then the poor med student passed out. My C-section was a bit of a gong show.
@JessicaLexicus
We’ve been doing fine with take-out and streaming movies. Have discovered that you can stream a movie while eating takeout. It’s awesome. I miss concerts and plays but I’ve watched some online. You can’t enjoy them nearly as much if you’re dead.
Did that weather system that did…all this… to us in NS have a name? Or a type? Was it just a series of bad thunderstorms (understatement of the year) or an atmospheric river or is there some other new force of nature that we need to know?
Cuz…whoa
@knittaphd
I completely understand this. I actually fled the country and my rural OB/GYN practice to live near Starbucks and be a stay-at-home Mom. I’d still kind of like to have a couple of chickens under my townhouse deck, but otherwise, I haven’t looked back. Good luck to your sister!!
@jtrebach
I actually discovered in undergrad that I couldn’t study for 16 hours a day. Physically could not. So I had to accept the grades I got with less studying. I accepted. Went to the gym. Read some novels.
I was a practicing MD when I found out I had ADHD. Good to know
My new neighbor has blue hair, Converse, an adorable slightly derpy dog, a very cute kiddo, and a frankly messy yard and how do I let her know that she’s clearly the best thing that’s happened around here in ages?
I should bake cookies maybe.
@DuchessSexpert
I had a grade 1 teacher who singled me out a lot for mistakes. She even held up a colouring page to the class to point out that I went outside the lines. I really enjoyed telling her that I was just finishing up med school.
@realTomChapman
Never, ever lie and say that you are from a Maritime province (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI) unless you are prepared to flawlessly sing Barrett’s Privateers from start to finish after 2 or 6 of those good, strong drinks
@drquinngyn
I have no idea what did or did not happen to Kate.
But surgeries that did need a two week hospital stay in my own clinical experience involved either a serious systemic illness, some previous surgeries, some sepsis, an ICU stay, or some or all of the above.
@BioshaJ
No one ever told me this in practice but it’s ok to leave now. You can go home or to a friend or to seek medical attention right now, today. You don’t have to finish work. Take care of you. All the time you need. These incidents take a toll and it adds up.
Ok NS really needs online mammogram booking. I just sat on the line waiting so long that my phone cut off the call. Now I have to start again. Seriously
@nshealth
, let’s get into this century. The blood and x-ray booking is so easy. Let’s do it like that
@DrSketchy2
I used to end up in the ICU with respiratory viruses every once in a while. Always got really, really sick. I am smacking my head that masks were right there the whole time! I haven’t had a virus since 2019. The last one took a bit of my hearing. I won’t be giving up my masks.
@erinstwitsexual
@ingloriousgigi
I have never done this but have vowed to do it the next time an appointment goes off the rails. Just a “thank you for your time” and out the door. I am a physician and an experienced patient and I just don’t have the patience or time left on Earth for that nonsense anymore.
Our lease is signed and deposit is deposited.
We are housed.
We like it too (that honestly wasn’t even a solid requirement anymore)
Omg I’m going to sleep tonight.
@EmRoseBaz
This was a hurdle in women’s health years before COVID. I had patients unwilling to believe they had certain diseases because of their lifestyle as well as many who wanted to lifestyle-away serious health conditions. Misinformation has been a problem for a long time.
We seem to have a house!!
As long as nothing falls through (I trust nothing) we are moving to Millwood, Middle Sackville to an adorable little house on July 1
Thank the gods
I don’t have any facts to back this up…it’s just a thought..
But I’m putting together our usual Walmart grocery order and it seems like quite a few things have suddenly gone up in price. Like a noticeable amount.
Do we think they’re trying to cash in on the Loblaws boycott?
@RndmStreetMedic
Kinda want to get a neon blinking Type 1 diabetic tiara for my teen and make them wear it everywhere so a low glucose doesn’t get missed or mistaken for substance abuse and ignored
@suyasharose
So many kids in clinic when we do bedside ultrasounds. Like every day. It’s so much fun to include them and ask them their plans for their sibling.
My favorite ever:
2y/o: I having bwuver
What will you do if it’s a sister?
2y/o: I gonna wun away.
…clearly a sister 😬
@alexandertyler
Frankly, I would like to see more of THIS happening to sexual predators in medicine and fewer female MDs just quietly quitting or losing their careers.
If no one else was silly enough to research ammonia leaks and fires like I did in the middle of the night, they are BAD. Like very BAD.
I’m sending so many shout outs to everyone in HRM who recognized this and raced so many resources to that fire and evacuated as a precaution
@WFKARS
@CanadianKayMD
I met a group of otherwise sane-appearing Canadian online acquaintances who believed this. And I was unable to convince them otherwise, despite my experience working for many years in multiple birthing units in multiple provinces. This does not and could not happen in 🇨🇦
@bdk1521
They call you snowflake, a sheep, old, fat, and then some homophobic slur. Usually in that order. You really don’t need to engage, the script is already written.
@Tim_Bousquet
I would feel so much better about the “make your own decisions based on your own risks and concerns” if I felt like we were being given any tools at all to determine what our risks and concerns might be. Like..data, and testing, and transparent discussions about risks.
Why are we not waiting to “learn to live with COVID” until everyone has all the vaccines science says we need (including small children), and we have in place accommodations for people likely to remain at risk for severe disease? Is that such a radical idea?
@friendof_thedog
@punished_cait
People get angry at me in real life for the (common) Scottish spelling I used for the Scottish name I gave my child of Scottish heritage instead of the American spelling when we have no American ties whatsoever.
@doyalikebaileys
I woke up to a live chicken in the hallway one morning. I recommend that experience. We stole granola from the dining hall to feed it.
@DrMakokis
And the graves are unmarked. The monsters didn’t even think they were important enough to bury them properly. These children clearly were not treated like people. The survivors told us
@AshleyGWinter
Worst headache of your is supposed to be an ER visit, is it not? Even I, grand avoider of my colleagues, grudgingly went after (a repeat) of the worst headache of my life. And it was a thing and it was good that I went
