News Flash: Your body can be full of cancer and if there is a video showing you getting shot in the chest and bleeding to death, the cancer didn’t kill you, the hemorrhagic shock did. I don’t care what underlying conditions Mr. Floyd had. He had one cause of death—Derek Chauvin.
I had a guy friend with a Ph.D in engineering ask me last week how women pee with a tampon in and this is why men shouldn’t be passing laws about women’s bodies.
If you don’t know a handful of women who’ve had an abortion, you’re not morally righteous or statistically anomalous; you’re just not the kind of person women trust with their secrets.
My 55 yo friend who is having postmenopausal bleeding just called me from CVS in TX bc they refused to fill her Rx for misoprostol (used to open the cervix) bc she couldn’t prove she wasn’t having an abortion. She is having surgery in 2 days. This is what total abortion bans do.
My OB/Gyn started a new group practice one month ago in Austin. He told me that between midnight and 6am today, their office received 22 online requests for tubal ligations. In 6 hours. When most people are sleeping. The ladies are NOT okay.
I can’t believe I live in a country where the 50 people representing half of the population think that 7.4 million people should have to stress over how to pay for a lifesaving medication that costs pennies to manufacture.
What I’m NOT going to do is let CVS call my friend who was denied her Rx bc she couldn’t prove it wasn’t for an abortion (at age 55). What I AM going to do is put them in touch with her very incensed gynecologist whose order they disobeyed when putting politics over patients.
My 10 yo weighs 55 lbs and still uses a booster seat, but in Ohio, Texas, and many other states, she’d be denied an abortion if she got pregnant…when she still rides in a booster seat herself!
With 2 ER physicians as parents, none of my 4 children will ever play tackle football. I said what I said. And I live in Texas where they’re in full pads by age 7.
Went to pick up 2 prescriptions today. I am doubly insured, both through my job (BCBS PPO) and my husband’s job (HMO). Total for a 1-month supply was $1812.75. Neither insurance covered a dime, so I went without. Just letting you know it happens to MDs, too, and it’s shameful. 1/
Me: Calls to refill birth control on day 21 of 28 day pack because I’m going on vacation. Told I need a prior auth from insurance company to refill before day 25.
Also me: Walks into a gun store because I’m having a bad day and walks out with a gun 10 min later.
A physician colleague's insurance will not cover her anti-nausea medicine (Zofran/ondansetron) for her CHEMO. It is $280.40 cash for 30 pills at Walgreen's. I logged into a physician/hospital medical supply company and can buy 30 pills for $3.30. That's an 8500% markup. 1/
My 2nd grader developed appendicitis overnight. The hospital required a $1,463.93 pre-payment in the ER before they would take him for an emergency surgery but no one could tell us how they calculated that amount. Our ER copay is $250 and it’s waived if you are admitted.
It’s 95 degrees out at 10pm and we have been without power for over 2 hours in case you’re wondering what kind of a shit show
@GregAbbott_TX
is running these days.
24 hr later, we’re still waiting on the helicopter to land in our front lawn to take my frontline physician husband to get his free lifesaving monoclonal antibodies. I just assumed that it happened automatically for every American with COVID, or were we supposed to call someone?
A source tells me they’re trying to evaluate 300+ patients from a hospital in Austin and that pipes just burst and there’s flooding in the NICU & OR of the children’s hospital. All because Texas wanted to skimp a little and keep our energy grid privatized.
Another day, another doubly insured patient who opted to forgo picking up a generic medication because it was not covered by either insurance plan and was over $1000 for 12 doses. That patient is me.
I saw a pt who wants to get the vax but has a history of allergies (carries Epi-Pen). Her whole family is anti-vax & won’t go with her. She was in tears afraid she’ll die at the pharmacy. We scheduled her vaccine & yours truly will be there to hold her hand, getting my flu shot.
Making cookies with my 11 yo & she told her BFF isn’t allowed to watch the Barbie Movie bc it “makes men look bad” and “women shouldn’t work certain jobs” so we had a 90 min chat about suffrage, the patriarchy & glass ceilings. In other news, we’re taking grapes to the bake sale.
We lost power. Again. It’s 34 degrees out and before 5am. All of our smoke detectors are alarming because the power backup isn’t detected. But tell me again how stable the grid is, Greg.
Here we go, Texas. There is an ER doc from Houston crowdsourcing on a physician Facebook group of 50K doctors. Patient is mid-40s, sick w/ something w/ high probability of death (not COVID) & needs ICU care & GI procedure stat. ER doc can’t find any beds and “will fly anywhere.”
From an ER doc colleague: “I had a COVID pt today with sats in the mid 80s on 6L tell me I was going to tell him he had COVID whether he did or not because I just wanted to make money off him. I was so mad I had to walk out (temporarily). 😡”
We are TIRED but are not giving up.
I have never been to a New Year’s party worth getting a hangnail over, let alone COVID, even if “mild.” I’m 368 days out from my diagnosis of “mild”
COVID and still dealing with chronic migraines, fatigue, insomnia and decreased exercise tolerance. And I never even had a fever.
Dad just told me that he & his wife are dropping their church. Their pastor of 8 years is anti-vax, anti-mask & his whole family got COVID. He came back preaching personal freedom after getting the antibodies. My dad: “I’m not sitting in a pew to be preached at by a hypocrite.”🔥
We haven’t even reached cruising altitude and the lady 2 rows ahead of us is asking the flight attendant if she has any medicine for “flu” because she doesn’t feel well and has a fever. She is, of course, unmasked and I just can’t anymore.
I just got a double cheeseburger, small fries and large Diet Coke at McDonald’s for $3.25 so please stop fat shaming or blaming the single mom of 2 working for $7.25/hour for her “unhealthy choices” or high blood pressure when non-organic raspberries are $8.96/pound at Walmart.
We’ve heard of ZERO reported cases of COVID in my kids’ school this year despite no mask mandate. I asked my 9 yo and she said, “Well, everyone in my class is coughing but they say it’s ‘allergies.’”
She actually made little quotes with her hands when she said “allergies.”
My 75 yo father was just sent home from the hospital after 15 days (10 in ICU) in a hospital gown & grippy socks, only to have to pay $758 out of pocket for the antibiotic that kept him from dying of sepsis. PT/home health in 4 days. We have to do better for our seniors. We must.
A lady told me today that “What is going on at the Ukrainian border is pretty much the same thing as what’s happening at America’s southern border” and I have no words to describe how absolutely disgusted I am with humanity.
This is why people saying “my choices and personal freedom don’t affect you” drive me insane. When large hospital systems get overwhelmed by largely unvaccinated patients who all of the sudden decide to trust doctors and want non FDA-approved treatment, everyone suffers.
Did not have destroying
@cvspharmacy
on my agenda for today but I’m here for it. Especially after being flooded with messages from other TX women who were discriminated against and denied meds. They don’t take my
@BCBSTX
insurance anyway, so I use a local independent pharmacy.
Just notified that there are COVID cases in 2 of my 4 kids’ classes, but it didn’t say which. Every day, my 2nd grader cries when I ask her if she kept her mask on all day bc she says it’s not fair that she got 3 shots (+flu) & her friends didn’t & she’s the only one in a mask.
100 countries have OTC birth control pills. The United States is not one of them. How are we even debating Roe v Wade when women do not have ubiquitous access to effective contraception since we also do not have universal healthcare and 50% of American pregnancies are unplanned?
“We both had high risk exposures and felt sick afterwards but we didn’t get tested because, you know, then we’d have to act on those results.”
The numbers don’t even begin to tell the whole story.
If a child goes hungry all weekend (and many do), it takes until Wednesday afternoon (receiving at least breakfast & lunch at school) before their brains are able to synthesize and retain new information. It almost seems like certain groups don’t want poor people to be educated…
Imagine if we were ever to forget 9/11. Well, yesterday, 300 more Americans died of “mild” COVID than died on 9/11. I won’t be forgetting how we somehow quit seeing that as atrocious any time soon.
So, it’s okay to be angry and frustrated. But be mad at the SYSTEM, not your physician, because they are the person you get to see. They may be a person just like me who is also getting shit upon in the same way you are. And let’s get angry collectively and fix it for ALL of us.
@windsong698
@watergatesummer
She got the medication and her gynecologist says he is not done with the pharmacist OR CVS for denying her care and putting her life and his livelihood at risk.
It’s 2 AM. My husband is still awake and hacking. 7 d after fever started and 6 d after being diagnosed with COVID. And he’s telling me no one has filled his ER shift in 4 hr so he’s expected to work. CDC guidelines say a minimum of 10 days and if sx improving. Cough is not.
Who is going to prevent insurance companies from hiking up premiums on all the patients who end up with chronic conditions from long COVID, even if their active infections were "mild"?
Watching vaccinated NFL players troll unvaccinated NFL players is way more entertaining than actually watching them play football. I’ll take a season pass please. Now do the NBA and MLB.
Ivermectin: My husband is a board certified medical toxicologist. There are reports that it inhibits replication of RNA viruses in vitro, it takes ~150 TIMES the recommended dose to achieve that. Most people become comatose at 10 times the recommended dose, incl many this year.
In America, it takes a minimum of 11 YEARS to create a board-certified physician. 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of medical school, and 3+ years of residency. Mistreating them into early retirement or killing them off in a pandemic is an 11-year fix, minimum. Tread carefully.
If you get into a severe wreck or nearly amputate a 🦵🏽w/in 200 mi of me & end up at a critical access hospital (not a trauma center) you’ll likely lose that 🦵🏽& perhaps your life because I’m not a trauma surgeon or a vascular surgeon & all trauma centers are closed to transfers.
The mother of the 3 month old baby with a brain tumor sleeping in the basement of the Ukrainian children’s hospital whose milk dried up from the extra stress who is hoping the hospital’s formula supply doesn’t run out has officially broken me.
How come when you ask what something is going to cost so you can plan/price shop, no one seems to know but somehow they could come up with this on the fly before the surgery ever even happened and without an itemized explanation of benefits?
It turns out that getting COVID may have saved my life. It made me take chest pain & shortness of breath seriously enough to get a CT where they found a kidney tumor. MRI confirmed. 90% it’s renal cell carcinoma (cancer) but easily curable w/ surgery. It’s been a crazy 2 weeks.
My husband’s 98 yo WWII veteran grandpa has pneumonia and has been waiting in the ER for a hospital bed upstairs for over 30 hours in a non-VA hospital in a city of over 150,00 people but go ahead and tell me we have the greatest healthcare system in the world.
These were FDA-approved prescriptions, both prescribed for “on-label “ use by my PCP for criteria which I meet. They weren’t written by me, my husband or a friend. But 2 insurance companies get to decide whether or not my condition is worth treating, not my doctor. 2/
Said every emergency physician and neurologist who has cared for multiple people under age 40 with devastating strokes caused by vertebral artery dissection from rapid neck manipulation by chiropractors.
i dated someone who was like "i dont care if we breakup, hate each other and never speak again, if theres one thing you take from me it should be: never go to a chiropractor, i mean that"
In case you didn’t believe me because I’m a physician and “can’t be trusted,” here it is again. It’s not that there are no COVID beds. It’s that there are NO BEDS AT ALL FOR ANYTHING!!!! Get it?
My 90 year old mother in central Texas in the emergency room for a heart attack. Community hospital. They're searching in a 300 mile radius for a bed, thus far unsuccessfully. Because of Covid overrunning Texas hospitals.
My surgeon just called me with my pathology results. Renal cell carcinoma. Stage 1, grade 2. Clear cell (most common) type. Margins clear. Considered cured. Followup MRI & meet w/ genetic counselor & surgeon in 6 months. So happy to put this behind me. Not everyone is so lucky.
It’s raining here. Just lost power as we do at least monthly. So glad
@GregAbbott_TX
protected hypothetical fetuses instead of fixing our existing crappy power grid as he promised.
So, it’s a lottery. Why should the insurance executives get to decide who and what is worth treating? Do I waste my doctor’s time appealing when he is already burnt out by spending 18 minutes clicking buttons for the 2 minutes of face time he got with me? His time is valuable. 3/
We’re heartbroken. We’re overwhelmed. The situation is critical. Please get vaccinated, wear a mask, wash your hands and get tested for COVID if you feel sick.
I have no scientific data to back this up, only what I’ve seen and felt when elderly folks lose their spouse, but I predict President Carter won’t be far behind his beloved wife, maybe 6-12 months max. And I’d still say it if he were 15 years younger and not in hospice.
Asked if winning a Nobel Peace Prize or becoming President was the most exciting thing that happened to him Jimmy Carter responds, “when Rosalynn said she’d marry me — I think that was the most exciting thing.”
Just saw a post by a woman asking for prayers for a COVID+ parent with low O2 levels, heading to ER. Her prayers are that the MDs “allow us to advocate the plan my family has all chosen if we were to find ourselves here.” Her profile photo: Freedom to Choose: Unmasked & Unafraid.
“Seton has closed their ORs so that OR staff can be re-deployed elsewhere in the hospital. Cancer cases cannot go on. Cardiac cases cannot go on. This afternoon I had to call 3 pts w/ cancer (one who is 27!!) & tell them their surgery for this week is cancelled.” -Austin surgeon
Two of my littles had their first cavities after missing a cleaning 6 months ago. Today they had fillings. In the office, not the surgery center. No IV anesthesia. $850 AFTER dental insurance. Having all your teeth shouldn’t be a sign of wealth in an industrialized nation.
What’s awesome is that our garage doors are too heavy to open w/o power. My husband was about to leave to stay in a hotel so he can work Thurs & Fri afternoons bc the roads are starting to ice. Abbott collected some cash and now an ER doctor can’t get to work. But we got a wall!
I’m no dermatologist, but I am a board certified emergency physician who sees a lot of weird rashes and that stuff on Trump’s hands—it ain’t eczema. Just sayin’.
Insurance cards are often not worth the plastic they are printed on. There is no generic for these. No GoodRx. And I will sleep tonight and be alive in the morning. But the person like me who couldn’t afford their insulin or they’re asthma medication might not be so lucky. /X
My 9 yo daughter just asked “What’s patriarchy?” and I’m definitely going to need to wait until Aunt Katie can get to her wall-size whiteboard instead of the one she carries in her tote bag.
My OB/Gyn for 12 years is Dr. Tyler Handcock 🏳️🌈 at Women’s Health Domain in Austin. He’s willing to talk tubal ligation with anyone 21 and up. Those are Medicaid & insurance-imposed age restrictions (another topic). Message online and tell him I sent you.
@Braunger
I got my birth control @ Planned Parenthood in DC because my university (Georgetown) didn’t allow it. I faced rioters, metal detectors, and the fear the place would be bombed. While trying to PREVENT pregnancy. While Roe was LEGAL. You are exactly right. It will only get scarier.
And I feel bad knowing he skips lunch or misses dinner w/ his family to do these things and makes less money than he did 25 yrs ago when he started out. So I will wait. And play the game of trying to change insurance at open enrollment time to find one that covers these meds. 4/
They did the right thing. He’s on his way home from his shift and is covered until it’s been 10 days since his symptoms started. And he will cover for someone else when they get sick. That’s how it should be. We’re all in this together.
You know what,
@amyphanwest
? God blessed my family, and the entire country, with the most brilliant & hardworking U.S. Representative who has sacrificed more for both her children & her country than you will ever fathom. She IS the blessing America needs right now. Watch & learn.
Walked into Walmart for some pet supplies for our new kitten. A man walked past me and said “Good grief.” Took me a while to realize he was talking about me being masked and not the obnoxious Santa hat pet bed in my cart.
People are NOT on board, y’all. They are DONE.
Just heard from the line at Walgreen’s: “The insurance only pays for the name brand and we filled the generic because we aren’t contracted with your insurance company. That’ll be $639.84.”
Our screwed up healthcare system in 10 seconds.
Burn it down and start over.
Retail pharmacies make an absolute killing, especially on cash-pay patients. Some pharmacies will offer a cash discount. However, in some states, pharmacists are not allowed to tell patients if the cash price is lower than their insurance co-pay. This is absolutely criminal. 3/
I tipped the woman who brought my curbside order out and she began crying after thanking me. Are people not doing that? If you aren’t, and can spare a few dollars, please tip these hardworking people who are taking extra risks with their health so that you don’t have to.
Christmas: The day when Mitch McConnell will be deciding between prime rib, ham and turkey while millions of mothers struggle to stretch a can of Spam for both lunch and dinner.
Same if you have a heart attack & need a bypass or defibrillator because the closest academic center just turned the PACU into a COVID ICU and is closed to ALL transfers.
In other words, good luck Texas. Hope you have good genes & equally good luck for the next 2+ months.
Gave Dad some lunch choices including Chick Fil-A.
Dad: “Definitely not Chick Fil-A. They don’t hire gay people, and I like gay people way more than any chicken sandwich I’ve ever eaten.”
Dan Porter FTW.
It is easy to be angry at the insurance company bc Zofran is a well-known therapy for chemo-induced nausea and it should absolutely be covered. However, I'm sure Walgreen's buys in bulk and gets it for even less than $3.30. Add in labor, plastic bottle and charge $25. 2/
Hells yeah!! This is how it’s done!! 💃
(Her middle-aged husband is healthy but anti-vax).
Tricks:
Open your mind
Open your ears
Open your heart
Find their pain
Kill them with truth & kindness
Book the appointment right then
Make good on your word
None of this requires an M.D.
@RobInSpringTx
My husband is the one who was with him and paid. He wasn’t given an option. Was told that was his copay and a percentage of the estimated bill for surgery. Didn’t want to delay things, so he agreed and they charged our credit card on file. He’s also an MD, but also a parent.
I’m having a little ENT procedure Friday and despite being fully vaxxed, they wanted a negative COVID test w/in 5 days of the procedure. I stroll up at my allotted time and was the only person being tested who was wearing a mask and I just can’t even with people right now.
I still can’t get over this judge in Ohio practicing medicine. So now, if a patient “does their research” and decides that their abdominal pain is d/t appendicitis instead of gall stones, is the judge going to force the surgeon to perform an appendectomy? Implications are huge.
Active shooter at the mall tonight where I bought our clothes for family portraits last month. Don’t ever tell ANYONE they’re “overreacting” being nervous about going out in public or having a panic attack in school car line.
With my son in the recovery room after a perforated appendix and with an upcoming 5-day admission for antibiotics and I just broke the news to my husband that because he’s 47 and we met our deductible early on…he’s getting a colonoscopy this year.
#AmericanHealthcare
The patient is angry, the doctor is frustrated, and the pharmacist is busy because there's a line out the door and the doctor is in on a code blue so he's on hold. All of this could be avoided if prescription drugs were covered equally by all insurance. 7/
And just like that, 11 weeks after her 2nd COVID vaccine, my 9 year-old has COVID. Again. I’ve been reassured by the drop in numbers but we will not be getting a PCR test nor seeing her pediatrician & thus her case will not be counted in the county’s statistics. This isn’t over.
Well, we thought that since my son tested negative before we all traveled for the holiday it was safe. Then he got a call while were together that he’d been exposed. By the time he showed symptoms, he’d infected us all. And I’m not doing so great. It wasn’t worth it-not at all.”
