The real pleasures of being a teacher at the Alun school. On duty at lunchtime and I stumble across these two, just having a play, in the music room. Awesome Louise and Molly

Congratulations to Ray Humphreys, legendary Alun School Geology teacher, collecting his British Empire Medal from Buckingham Palace today for services to teaching. So well deserved.
Thank you to all our staff and students for an incredible effort in trying circumstances. Over 1000 students were safely evacuated, electrical equipment was saved from flooded rooms and sandbag walls were swiftly built.
A fantastic achievement from Layla Bradbrook 8DS. After being diagnosed with Crohn's disease last year, she decided to do a 100 mile charity ride from her garage. After 6 hours of gruelling cycling she reached her target. Raising £1,515.

Many congratulations to Mike Newland, our coordinator of English, who has been awarded an inspirational teacher award from Oxford University. Very well deserved indeed.
First day done for Y12 and Y7. Thank you all for your calm approach around school, wearing masks where appropriate and hand sanitising frequently. A great example to the rest of the school
Well done Alunites. That is the first day done. Really proud of you all, for your sensible behaviour, wearing masks and taking the changes in your stride. Every day the one way system will get a little bit clearer and finding your way will get a little easier.

Here is a piece of social history emerging from beneath the wooden floor of the Daniel Owen Gym which is presently being replaced, after 80 years of use. We have discovered a cigarette packet from the 1930s (we can date it precisely by the card shown on the image below).
We have been made aware of this message on social media from one of our new Y7 parents. A testament to the kindness of some of our older students.
As a school we have seen and thanked as many of the students involved as we can.
Following our appeal for old laptops, a massive

to
@SandTSystems
. They responded by buying 5 new laptops for our students to use in their online learning. Pictured are directors Tudor Jones and Simon Thelwell presenting them to Headteacher Jane Cooper

Some quotes from our students about what they got from being in school this week...
"Laughing with my friends and tutor again!"
"Seeing familiar faces"
"Getting out of the house for a few hours"
"Talking about what it's been like"
"Calming my anxiety before September"
We are celebrating the success of Olivia Grace Jones of year 12 in gaining a prestigious Seren summer school place at Harvard University in the United States of America.
The Alun School is delighted at the news all students will be returning to school in September.
We will be working with Welsh government guidance to develop a plan that will be shared with all parents and students before the end of this term.
We continue to be astounded by the generosity of our community. This is Rob Lewis from
@Celtic_FP
donating another 3 brand new laptops to the school. These will be going straight out to students to help them with online learning.

As well as Charlie Hulson (ex-Alunite) competing in the Elite London Marathon yesterday in a PB (20th overall, 5th UK) our very own Miss Stopforth did a virtual London Marathon, completing it in 3:35:35. Well done both!
As we come to the end of a very unusual half term, we'd like to thank our students and staff for their patience, hard work and resilience in very difficult circumstances.
We look forward to welcoming you all back in person or remotely on Tuesday, 3rd November.
Thank you Y11 for your hard work all week, attending online lessons. Our stats show that attendance in streamed lessons was over 90% for the week. Really proud of you all for logging on, engaging and learning.

Another one of those times when being a teacher at the Alun is so special. I was just completing next years timetable and these 6 students walk in. Apparently lacking in confidence and worried about performing tomorrow in front of the school. On the spot, I said, 'show me'.
Exceptionally talented Lewis Byles of year 8 attended the European Taekwondo Championships in Croatia this weekend.
We are delighted to report that he won:
* Gold in Continuous Sparring making him European Champion.
* Silver in Point Stop Sparring
* Silver in Black belt patterns
We are delighted for our students who have received outstanding results. They have worked hard and thoroughly deserve their success
We would like to wish them good luck for their next steps whether at university, on higher level apprenticeships or as they enter the world of work
Delighted to announce that Ray Humphreys, ex-teacher of Geology at our school, has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Geology and education.
Good luck Y11 as you move on to the next stage of your lives. Today should've been your shirt signing day and achievement ceremony. In these strange times neither can happen. We look forward to seeing you all again in more normal times.
The Alun School community is saddened to hear of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Her life of service and duty has been inspirational. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family at this time.
To all our parents. Our final whole school letter of the year including plans for the start of term in the autumn. Enjoy your summer. See you in September
Congratulations to Jessica Randell who has been given an award for Excellence by the Royal Geographical Society this week for achieving the highest score in her GCSE Geog exams in the U.K. Fantastic achievement!

What a day that was! Really lovely to meet our new Y7s as they start their journey as part of the Alun family. Great to see so many smiling faces at the end of the day. Below are a few photos of what they got up to.
Thank you to our students for all their hard work this week in online lessons. Whilst the situation isn't ideal we appreciate you being there in your live online lessons.
As we continue to another week of online learning next week, please continue to engage as you have been.
Due to unauthorised visitors on site school will be closed to pupils and staff on Tues 4 May
Remote learning will be in place and pupils should follow their usual timetable
We understand the disruption caused and are working closely with

A big thank you to the anonymous parent who called in yesterday morning to donate approximately £200 worth of brand new stationery to the school. This will go a long way to help students who don't have stationery items of their own in school
