Where did the term “tech bro” come from? In my exposure to lots of people and ways of life, I find people in the tech business to be among the least “bro-like” I’ve seen. I would have thought a lot of descriptions would have been more apt. Is it just me?
Wow.
@stanford
statement more cowardly than
@harvard
. I want to be proud of my alma mater; today I'm appalled.
Statements like this suggest Stanford's "leadership" lives in a bubble with no moral compass, caring more about political correctness than actual education or objective…
Had a chance to spend time with Mike Maples Sr this week. He's had recent health challenges, but his fundamental energy is unchanged. His eyes can still sparkle.
It was poignant for me, as I was reading the
@WalterIsaacson
book on
@elonmusk
, which I liked.
Regarding…
I’m rooting for
@elonmusk
because he makes stuff happen that would never happen otherwise. Electric cars. Batteries. Solar. Reusable rockets. I don’t agree with how many kids he has or a lot of other stuff he does. But I still root for him to make stuff happen when others can’t.
This is 3D chess level of cringe. Multiple layers of non self awareness and detachment from reality from a gadget company that makes their stuff at Foxconn. And I’m a fanboy of Apple.
At Apple, we believe that climate change is one of the world’s most urgent priorities and we are deeply committed to doing our part. Today we had a special guest—a real force of nature—stop by to check on our progress.
@Harvard
This statement is a cowardly non-statement. Especially given the vile messages put out by many student groups that you do nothing to address.
@HarvardHBS
you might want to make your own statement because
@harvard
has completely lost the plot.
My Dad joined Microsoft in 1988 as the head of applications, and it’s hard for me to describe the impact he had on my career. It was fun to listen to the
@AcquiredFM
podcast episode on Microsoft this week and hear his name come up a couple of times.
@gilbert
and
@djrosent

If you are saying there’s an existential climate crisis that threatens all of humanity and must be immediately addressed while refusing to acknowledge nuclear is part of the solution…you are not a serious person.
MUSK SLAMS GERMANY NUCLEAR CLOSURES:
"I want to be super clear. In my opinion, Germany should not only not shut down the nuclear power plants, it should reopen the ones that are shut down,"
says
@elonmusk
to
@welt
.
"This is total madness. I want to be clear. Total madness."
I used to think that authoritarianism was the beginning, but things evolve naturally to freedom. Now I think the reverse is true - systems gravitate to authoritarianism without a constant active push for freedom. It seems that freedom is not the entropic state.
Elon. Please—for the love of decency—get off Twitter, hand the keys over to someone who does this as an actual job, and get on with running Tesla and SpaceX. You are destroying your credibility. It’s just not a good look.
$1.7 Trillion. Full of earmarks and pork. 4700 pages with barely any time to read.
It’s amazing we’ve let our society drift to where we find this even remotely acceptable.
@esthercrawford
Huge Respect to you Esther. Lots of us are rooting for Twitter in a big way and it’s going to be folks in the arena who step up when it counts most who will make the difference.
Sometimes a single image or piece of footage captures the zeitgeist at multiple levels. This one should be a permanent reminder of the multiple layers of insanity of the far left as well as the lack of seriousness of those running our elite Universities.
It’s important we not…
Reporter grills Columbia student after she demands the university help feed protestors occupying Hamilton Hall:
"It seems like you're saying, 'we want to be revolutionaries, we want to take over this building, now would you please bring us some food'."
He’s right. Those saying inflation *technically* isn’t a tax as it isn’t a clear-cut policy are missing the point. Inflation IS a tax. It’s the government’s way to take wealth from the people quietly instead of doing it openly.
Rishi Sunak, "The best taxt cut that I can deliver for the British people is to halve inflation."
Laura Kuenssberg, "Inflation is not a tax"
Rishi Sunak, "Inflation is a tax"
Statement from President Gay: There are some who have confused a right to free expression with the idea that Harvard will condone calls for violence against Jewish students. Let me be clear: Calls for violence or genocide against the Jewish community, or any religious or ethnic…
Grief is joy you would have experienced in the future with a loved one who you just lost. Which is important to understand because it reminds you that grief cannot exist without appreciating joy and love.
If there is any part of you that doesn’t celebrate someone who helps build wells that help over 500,000 people, you might need to figure out what part of you thinks that and why.
While American YouTuber MrBeast’s goal was to provide clean drinking water for 500,000 people, activists say his actions shamed the Kenyan government and helped perpetuate the stereotype that Africa is "dependent on handouts."
@VivekGRamaswamy
Vivek - I like your take on a lot of issues. So it's sad you choose to create division, suggesting that "VCs & startup execs" as an entire group are acting this way. Most are NOT. They are trying to help people deal with the shock of a terrible situation they had no role in…
I see people spending countless hours online airing their fake grievances about the word "Delve" while never building anything...and then I see
@marissamayer
(who I don't even know!)...doing her absolute best when she could have tapped out long ago. So, I'm gonna root for her.
Hey X folks…interested in your take on this.
I must admit my initial reaction was like that of
@jason
. It struck me that I and my parents worked at least as hard at that age (actually harder) in jobs that weren’t terribly exciting and involved long commutes. I never even…
The feeling at
@ycombinator
last night was absolutely magical. Huge congrats to
@garrytan
and the YC team. Most importantly, congrats to one heck of a group of founders in the batch. I could sense GREATNESS in every direction I looked.
The term DEI has become like Orwellian Newspeak. This picture shows zero regard for "diversity" or "equity" and makes an absolute mockery of "inclusion."
Today, my friends and I sat outside of an anti-Israel event at Yale (we weren't let in), listening.
Some quotes:
"Israel cannot remain the state of the Jewish people."
"[Hamas is] a resistance group"
"[Israel is] trying to inflict as much harm, damage, and death as possible"
I hope I get to see a day where Americans and Russians find the same type of common ground as the previously unthinkable bonds forged with Germany and Japan.
My grandfather fought in WW2 off the coast of Japan and look how far all of us have come in only two generations.…
This headline actually happened. Wow.
Report: Ron DeSantis Will Formally Announce His 2024 Bid With Elon Musk, Because Apparently David Duke Wasn’t Available via
@VanityFair
The most insidious form of climate denial is no longer, "It's not happening," but the belief that incremental or tech solutions will solve this crisis.

Only 6 countries in the WORLD have a higher GDP than Apple’s market cap today.
USA
China
Japan
Germany
India
UK
And yet Apple’s market cap is <10% of the USA National debt of $32 Trillion.
Makes you think…
Fourth of July always reminds me of the lengths people go to to just have the chance to live in the USA.
There’s still much to be done to make it better. But I try to never take for granted the fact I got blessed to be born here.
Happy Birthday USA and thanks to all of the…
My dad first came to this great country from Jodhpur, India in 1968.
He borrowed $1k from his uncle for the trip and got a full scholarship for a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Marquette University.
He got an arranged marriage with my mom in 1972 and they both came to…
@devonzuegel
You might like a book called “The Art of Thought” by Graham Wallas. It talks about how creative genius requires incubation before illumination. More folks should know about it.
A great conversation with one of the greatest founders of the last 2 decades… Daniel Ek (
@eldsjal
) of Spotify. So many lessons of breakthrough startups in a single episode.
Thanks, Daniel!

Hopefully the SEC will act in good faith with
@brian_armstrong
and
@coinbase
. It hasn’t been a good look so far on SEC’s part; Coinbase has bent over backwards to work within the system. Citizens of USA should expect our government still stands for protecting freedoms rather…
@CaseyNewton
Casey - I enjoyed spending time with you in my brief opportunity to do so. But I sincerely ask - what is your strategy right now to make the world better? It seems like you’re prioritizing other stuff right now.
people on Twitter re:
@elonmusk
seem to fall into a 2x2:
Hopes Elon succeeds vs hopes he fails
Believes Elon will succeed vs believes he’ll fail
Each quadrant interesting in its own way.
I’m in the hope/believe he will succeed quadrant. Call me an optimist.Time will tell.
@mcdermott
John - friendly advice. Probably best to delete these tweets. They make you look awful and don't help
@esquire
or
@gqmagazine
. Sometimes best just to take the 'L.' Everyone screws up from time to time.
The collapse of moral and intellectual integrity in academia has accelerated in recent years. The events of the last week shine a glaring light on what has been obvious for too long. College campuses need structural reform.
I was waiting to post this until it was confirmed by multiple sources I trust (that are
@Stanford
)
Just read this. Hopefully widely reported on tomorrow
These are 1930s vibes
I’ve been reading that Twitter employees sent a letter of demands to
@elonmusk
. Is this actually a real thing? It seemed like something you would read in
@TheOnion
which made me think I was getting fooled.
Remember when the Coinbase CEO said that if employees brought their whole selves to work and discussed issues like racism at work, the company was doomed? Good thing they stayed so “mission focused”
IMO SF should have a moratorium on all new extracurricular virtue signaling laws (like no plastic straws) until it demonstrates it can perform the basic functions of governance and law enforcement
Incensed to learn that one of my favorite local San Francisco bakeries
@LeMaraisBakery
had their Castro shop ransacked last night
I've been warning for yrs now about the increasingly lax approach to criminal enforcement in SF. These are the unsurprising results. Wake up leaders!
This comment is incredibly wrong.
In every field where excellence matters I’ve found it’s valuable to have a great coach.
Perhaps
@neilpatel
just doesn’t know what one looks like.
But he underscores that in his own words when he says “I just don’t get it.”
The dumbest thing you can spend money on as an entrepreneur is a business coach.
I just don’t get it.
I know so many people who spend money on coaches.
And they always tell me, oh this coach is so successful, smart, and rich…
It’s a bunch of bull… if the coach were that…
Has anyone credible who’s done the research created a list of insane SF politicians and the best people to replace them and what time those elections occur to get rid of the insanity? SF voters need to make an unambiguous statement that sends shockwaves. Time for a sea change.
When it comes to Twitter and
@elonmusk
I’ve come to realize there are very few sane people in the mix.
Too many haters who can’t wait to see him fail
Too many fanboys who indulge him.
I’m rooting for him like I rooted for every leader of Twitter. Twitter transcends agendas.
Both parties have been complicit in these disastrous spending bills for far too long. No matter your place on the political spectrum, don’t let tribalistic rhetoric and culture wars blind you to the fact they are in cahoots on this stuff. It’s massively wasteful and corrupt.
I brought along the 1.7 trillion, 4,000+ page Pelosi-Schumer omnibus spending bill that's being fast-tracked through the Senate. This process stinks. It's an abomination. It's a no good rotten way to run government. We're standing up and saying NO.
How did Canada of all countries decide to stop caring about basic freedoms? Are their citizens just too passive to care? I’m just utterly mystified by it.
The struggle for us Tesla owners is real.
@elonmusk
tweets have just ruined it for me when I drive my car in Plaid mode. I’m stuck in a bad spot with the best car America has ever made by a wide margin. How could I let somebody lift me up and tear me down like this?
2022 is feeling like the Annus Mirabilis for AI. We’ve had breakthroughs in the past and will in the future but this year felt like an inflection year.
@gregisenberg
I dunno. I tell founders I’m a rocket fuel salesman. I don’t pretend otherwise. I bet most folks I’ve worked with would have my back on this claim.
Hey Founders - if you found yourself in a zero-to-one startup struggling to get product-market fit, and you could get the undivided attention and advice from anyone you choose, who would you pick and why?
This is a great example of the impact YC has made. Congrats to
@garrytan
and the team for putting on a great event. Like a modern day version of a ticker tape parade to celebrate great founders.

@BillAckman
@joerogan
A lot of “experts” have gotten important things wrong, way too often and without pushback or accountability for far too long.
We need to prioritize honest debate over credentials masquerading as expertise.
Both sides of the political spectrum have lost their minds. And it’s even worse when judges act hyper political. Less culture wars, more good government please.
NEW: James Ho and Elizabeth Branch, the circuit court judges who announced last year that they would no longer hire clerks from Yale Law, are adding Stanford to the boycott.
The judges won’t hire students who choose to attend Stanford Law in the future.🧵
@Basti
Hey Bastian - Im Speaking as someone who couldn’t wait to get the jab. And I’m grateful to have been vaccinated. Twice. I Thought it was a miracle. The issue is not solely about whether the vaccine was a good thing. It’s also about whether people we trusted to tell us the truth…
Doctor: may I give a different perspective?
Many Americans learned about how far off their concept of “science” was from COVID. They thought that science was something they could trust. They trusted their vaccines. Their FDA. The CDC.
And then they saw the COVID show….
"Duplicative language" is a new term I never heard at
@Harvard
in my time there. Can you give me an update on what it means so I can stay educated? It seems like one of those expressions requiring context.
The deadline for YC S24 is tomorrow. Here's why you SHOULD NOT APPLY TO YC:
YC seems like a reasonable proposition. They give you some money to help start your business, and they promise you access to a community of people that can help you along the way. In exchange, they don't…
If someone is offering you business advice and their entire success is based on the what they’ve done in the last 10 years, I’d at least consider a second opinion.
@ianbremmer
Ian - thanks for posting this. It is very enlightening in the sense that it reveals how you operate. As an advocate reader of many of your books it’s useful to see this side of you.
Vintage fountain pens made before WW2 are absolutely magical. This comes from a Waterman’s No7 Red Ripple with a Pink nib from the 1930s. Almost 100 years old and will crush any modern alternative.
