Tech gave me everything I have
Its capacity to lift people into abundance is incredible and there is nothing like it
We must make that into prosperity for everyone
"I realized tech is this thing that can bring people out of whatever situation they're in and often into prosperity. And that's what I want for everyone."

Watch here:
George Orwell, 1984: “Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And that process is continuing day by day and minute by minute.…
Writers may wish to rethink their ambitions. If their work should prove lastng, it may end up being tortured for all eternity
This is not mere "sensitivity" editing, by the way. This is blunt, agenda-driven rewriting. It is idea injection. And it will be continual once it starts
Next year, I'll be going back to Y Combinator as President and CEO.
It's a one in ten billion lifetimes kind of opportunity— YC gave me my start, and I'm deeply grateful to the community.
In 2008 I showed up to Y Combinator Startup School to take photos of speakers and learn how to start a startup.
I was an engineer and designer and had never started a company before.

I just got forwarded the craziest email from SF Parking Enforcement
A vehicle used in narcotics trafficking with over $2600 worth of tickets has been parked for weeks across from the Marina Safeway.
A citizen asked to get it removed and this was the response.

today about colleges’ new scheme to get around SCOTUS’ strike-down of race-based admissions: Redefine the concept of “merit” to include race.
Who’s behind this? One of the nation’s top education consulting firms.
The President of Stanford had to resign over doctored data
Stanford professor Jo Boaler should resign next. Her doctored data removed Algebra from SF public middle schools and will soon do so all over CA
Her impact on setting back access to advanced math is devastating to kids
It is shocking how often startups fail because of the personality flaws and deep seated childhood traumas of their founders and execs.
Get therapy. Get exec coaching. Do inner work.
It will save you if you let it. You’ll solve problems now and prevent problems in the future.
Been thinking about this meme all week
Are you the kind of person who just rolls up your sleeves and plugs the hole?
Our world needs a whole lot more of that

Maximum gangster. 💪
Today I am the new President & CEO of Y Combinator, an organization that is a true magnet for smart ambitious high integrity people who believe technology can solve the problems facing humanity.
And those that believe are those that do.
Looking forward to an epic 2023. 🙏
Colleges are buying SAT takers names, marketing to low scorers, all to boost rejections and juice their already low acceptance rates to get higher US News rankings
Incentives drive unintended consequences: all the world’s not a stage, but a game
I'm an Asian-American Dem who has only done donations to Dems. I am the child of working class immigrants who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area.
They're taking away our math and our way up to study STEM. This is why I was a top donor to the recall.
They want to erase me.
The United States is not building enough.
We're spending too much time fighting about inane things, banning math, virtue signaling, having low expectations, pouring sugar on the floor, focused on identity instead of outcomes.
Instead, we need to accelerate.
The western mind can’t comprehend this.
China is leading. Look. It’s simple.
West was to busy with wars for the past 30 years, and China was busy building.
If you do one thing in 2024, visit China.

Masayoshi Son invented the first electronic dictionary, sold it for $1.7M to Sharp, and used that capital to start SoftBank.

These car robbery crews are armed and known to open fire on people who intervene.

Regulators need to step in to do a *backstop* of depositors (not a bailout of a bank)
40,000 SVB depositor small businesses
30% will fail to make payroll in the next 30 days

120,000 jobs on the line

The real victims of the SVB fallout are the depositors:
startups (10 to 100 employees) who cannot make payroll, and will have to shut down or furlough *next week*
If these startups wait weeks/months for their deposits, we have destroyed a generation of US startups, *at random*

The wrong partner on your board can literally make a billion dollars in value evaporate.
It is not the sole reason behind every startup failure but it is the true story a surprising percentage of the time.
Being an Asian male in the US is tough.
You get zero Tinder matches.
You get randomly beaten up or shot.
Media portrays you as a nerdy loser or a stereotypical Kung-Fu guy.
And you grind like an animal in school but still get rejected by top unis because they think your haircut…
Good design is not picking colors and making it pretty
Good design is removing steps, understanding motivations, making it clearer, more navigable, faster, easier... it is how it works not how it looks.
Too many products (even at the largest firms in tech) forget this.
You can grind really hard and sacrifice your health, relationships and body for a few years before the wheels fall off.
Sooner or later you have to go into sustainable marathon mode, otherwise you’ll never make it to the ten years it takes to be an overnight success.
The most important thing the FDIC and the US Government can do right now is *make the receivership as short as possible*
There are thousands of US startups that banked at SVB, often as their *sole bank*. $250K per account is not going to last long.
From the FDIC website:
Why is every startup a 10 year overnight success?
80% of new businesses fail in the first 5 years. Another 80% fail in the next 5 years.
If you can last 10 years your business is in the top 4% of cos that are still kicking.
If you start, be ready to commit for 10 years.

To make all people healthier
The fix is not:

To make everyone equally unwell
NYT just going with straight ad hominem with no facts on the front page these days
Putting the “capitalists” in the crosshairs with the tuxedo photos is some high class real propaganda
My advice to engineers starting out:
Find an important open source project on the way up and fix a bunch of issues and then go cold email a bunch of startups you know use that open source project.

If young people don't believe a better world is possible through innovation and business, society is screwed.
Nearly 40,000 foreign-born graduates of U.S. universities were recruited to Canada from 2017 to 2021. The USA is forcing some of the smartest people leave.
The likelihood of getting an H1B went down from 1 in 4 to now 1 in 7 due to completely arbitrary caps set long ago.

America has more immigrants than any other country. It’s no wonder so much innovation happens here.

When choosing a startup idea, you must be able to check either of these boxes

[ ] 10X better product

I recently met with a VC firm twice, showed a product demo, and answered countless questions about our strategy. Only to find out from someone else they were already invested in a direct competitor.
Chat is overrated as a user experience.
Good visualization, information hierarchy, copy, call to actions is underrated as a user experience.
Multiply all of these effects by 10X when you have the power of an LLM involved. Start with great UX, not a chatbot.
This chart should make you go insane. This is the number of high skilled workers that want to work here. There is a cap at 85,000 slots that will be filled. We are actively shooting our future selves in the foot.
A founder sent me this: There are extremists making things feel unsafe for Palestinians at Harvard
Beware extreme ideology and taking things too far. I am so sorry to hear about this.
Being in favor of merit, personalized education, gifted & talented, advanced math, and being a staunch supporter of strong public schools is not "far right"
Community notes are an equalizing force for the worst excesses of hard left ideology

Elections have consequences and Nov 2024 will be the end of Dean Preston’s terrible political career
High performers are almost always well networked internally. Not through relationship building (tho they do that, too), but through being at the center of important problems for the business.
Don’t invest in any altcoin that has: no real use case, infrequent GitHub commits, nonsense in their website/whitepaper, no community, no dev team, devs/founders who are hostile/insulting. That weeds out most of them. The rest you can buy some amount you are willing to lose. 👌
In 2021 the city spent $1.1B on homelessness, up 500% since 2016.
The result? Homelessness increased 64%
Where does all this money go?
Much of it is permanent housing, where people are paid to do drugs until they die (no or minimal detox and treatment offered or required)
My new piece for the
@nypost
about the radical transformation of Harm Reduction, the Homeless Industrial Complex, and Gavin Newsom calling in the national guard to SF:
"An est. 4.5% of the startups that have gone through Y Combinator since 2010 have become billion-dollar companies. Between 2010 and 2015 [the rate] was even higher, at approximately 5.4% of all startups. 2/3 of total value has come from its unicorns."
Founders— when things are great, really celebrate that. Share that with your team and savor it.
When things are falling apart, the key is to take action, don’t be paralyzed, and really focus on self care: sleep, food, exercise, then back to work. This too shall pass.
