is off to the printer! Everything you see below will be in there, plus amazing art, Amanda Fortini, Ariel Pink and News from Wilson County, plus our new continental weather report and Cryptogram. Don’t miss out on a word of the fun:
Once again I find that I'm among the five or six people on a packed plane who care to look out the window at views unavailable to humankind for almost all of our history on earth
One reason truck drivers get my attention & have my respect when they decide to take a stand is that they live their days, their weeks, their years, their decades in hard-working, round-the-clock, honest & dignified obscurity
If they choose to speak up, it means something
The idiocy and ignorance on display at the Supreme Court today caught even me, a cynic, by surprise. It breached a reservoir of faith — in the basic intellectual competence of highly educated jurists — I didn’t even know was in me.
What strikes me most about the WEF is how little disagreement there is. The largest matters on earth are at stake (supposedly) yet the conferees don't argue. They don't debate. All points seem smugly settled. It's an ego orgy, a great self-satisfied mutual grope.
I love it. Suddenly Twitter is some sort of sacred public trust that mustn’t be tampered with by evil capitalists while it is also an independent corporation answering only to shareholders that can boot people off and manipulate news and information at will.
It's tough watching my friend & colleague
@mtaibbi
take endless abuse for working himself to the bone on one of the most important stories of our time, the Twitter Files. That much of this gruesome, even slanderous crap comes from other "journalists" stuns me, though it shouldn't
So the nations of the world are flying their greatest athletes to COVID ground-zero in the midst of the pandemic — and then flying them back home — but pre-schoolers are being barred from restaurants? Absurdist drama has truly escaped the theater
In about 6 years I'm going to take one of the 400 incandescent bulbs my wife has squirreled away and I'm going to secretly screw it into a lamp in a room full of young people who've known only the sad grey new bulbs and then I'm going to switch it on and transform their world…
Twitter pulled the canned applause track and a number of well-known figures here who can't hold a real audience are fleeing. They are pretending it's out of principle.
So in case you younger people are wondering if this is a 1) uniquely troubling historical period or 2) a rocky patch, I’m here to tell you that it’s way closer to 1)
Congratulations. You grew up just in time for one hell of a drama. Think hard about the part you want to play
Usually when a president’s popularity plummets you see a lot of adjusting & retreating aimed at restoring it. But not now, for some reason. Now, you see the pedal to the metal, full speed ahead, as if the regime expects it can go over the cliff without incident, on wings. Weird
My father died of ALS in May 2020. I can't even count how many silly COVID emergency rules and regs I and others had to break in order to be with him, keep him comfortable, & see him off. I waited to host a memorial service, but things stayed closed. No dice. I won't forget.
While the Iranian and Chinese people rise up in the streets to claim their civil rights, American progressives take to their keyboards and fight alongside their Fortune 500 corporate partners to restore censorship on social media!
I grew up working in gas stations. They aren’t predatory money machines. Can’t afford to be due to intense competition, because there’s usually another one just down the block — whose prices are posted on a big sign for all to see.
What silly amateur condescending bullshit.
My message to the companies running gas stations and setting prices at the pump is simple: this is a time of war and global peril.
Bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you’re paying for the product. And do it now.
Congratulations to
@mtaibbi
,
@bariweiss
&
@shellenberger
for winning the first annual Dao Prize from the National Journalism Center tonight in recognition of their reporting on the Twitter Files
Proud to know them all, proud to be here tonight
This matters
The WH press corps got the signal tonight that it was safe to go into attack mode & make up for lost time. It duly obeyed. Reporters who once competed to throw softballs suddenly competed to hurl stones. What a weird little mob of robots. It was actually chilling to witness.
Angered by Trump’s charge that it feigns independence while acting as a unified, coordinated attack machine, the press responds with a coordinated, unified attack on Trump. Smart.
On Thursday, more than 100 newspapers will publish editorials decrying Trump's anti-press rhetoric. The # of participating papers keeps growing. Here's my full story
My late father, a patent attorney & chemist who spent much of his life suing companies like J&J, told me that pharma being allowed to start advertising on TV & thereby underwriting big media was a development society would come to regret. He didn’t live to learn how right he was
That speech tonight was not a campaign speech. It did not have any real persuasive value or political intent. It was a speech specifically meant to manage and mold expectations about the vote-counting process.
Ominous.
Worse than Philadelphia.
Tonight in NYC I witnessed a humiliating vaccine enforcement action in a restaurant which stuck in my soul as evidence of our shameful social regression. I hope it will not appear in a future book of mine as a portent of decline and fall. The rotten taste won’t leave my mouth
So basically today’s corporate-sponsored news was almost completely a reaction to Joe Rogan committing the unpardonable crime of recovering rather quickly from Covid
That "Substack man"
@mtaibbi
ate your lunch today.
He will eat it again tomorrow.
Then he will go on eating it day after day.
It's going to be a long, long month.
Elon Musk paid $44 billion to discover what we already knew: content moderation is messy and involves whole teams of people with a range of viewpoints trying to appease different political factions.
He then gave “leaks” to a Substack Man to present it as a blockbuster.
Just astonished how the all-powerful villain of every dire media narrative now, including COVID, is the same working-class cohort that’s been slammed by opiate addiction, chewed up in wars, & pauperized by trade policy. And the heroes? Giant corporations & governments & the rich
What an awful political idea this last-minute Union Station speech is. No one will watch it, no one will be swayed by it, but it will almost certainly generate ridiculous memes and clips that will circulate endlessly from now until Tuesday
This new CNN declaration that masks “are not appropriate in this pandemic” is an Orwellian escalation. Can the media produce amnesia on demand? And will the people cooperate by wiping their own memories?
Completely intentional. The ultimate power move
I’m glad I defied about 10 different COVID rules and that many others did too so I could be with my father as he passed from ALS. I’ll never regret it. It’s an odd thing to boast of in public but I hope it will give people of conscience courage in various situations arising now
I have to hand it to
@mtaibbi
and
@ShellenbergerMD
for containing their laughter at the bizarre, inept, insulting, plain ignorant questions and back talk from Dem reps at the congressional hearings on the
#Twitterfiles
today. These people did not come prepared. Farcical.
Still waiting for that dire theocratic repressive Bible state that educated people have warned me all my life was imminent in America. Meanwhile, the repressive secular technocracy they treated as science fiction is almost fully installed
Writers may wish to rethink their ambitions. If their work should prove lastng, it may end up being tortured for all eternity
This is not mere "sensitivity" editing, by the way. This is blunt, agenda-driven rewriting. It is idea injection. And it will be continual once it starts
This "White Rural Rage" book, the acme of psychological projection, troubles me greatly. "Thinking people" are incubating an ever-more naked rationale for some sort of siege or campaign against a perceived sub-human adversary. These warning signs must be taken seriously.
Mature nuanced discussions of limited nuclear war creeping into media and social media today. Been around a while, I have, 59 years old, and I must to tell you something:
This is insane.
Whatever is causing people to dabble in this, put it down. Put it down now. Insane.
Not trusting big pharma is now a crime, essentially, except that there are no trials for the accused and the sentences are immediate and extreme, often involving a total loss of livelihood
The all-hands media freak-out over Dr Malone on Rogan suggesting we’re in the grips of an engineered mass psychosis offers support for his thesis. Manipulation of the public “mind” has been the power class’s Manhattan Project 2.0 for decades. Now their puppets are playing shocked
We’ve now been through every iteration of feasible COVID responses, and some that haven’t proved feasible, & they have all sucked. Time to return to normalcy & deal with the fact that sometimes life is difficult
We are led by such preposterous figures, like no one you ever see at home, in life. They insist on inflicting on us such bloated theater & they seem not to know how false it all appears. They bluster & strut among the marble columns, waving, saluting. Honoring the lie.
Democracy isn't "on" the ballot, you sillies. It IS the ballot.
This whole End of Democracy line may be the dumbest, most desperate campaign theme of my lifetime. Can't wait for it to be over.
Waiting for the calls that will never come from some old, old friends who questioned my very sanity (one by calling my wife) when I failed to get with the Fauci script back when.
I had a conversation last year with a former state prosecutor from a large and populous southern state. I asked him what was the biggest racket going there. Drugs? Human trafficking? He shook his head. He said I wasn’t even close. Then he answered me:
Medicare and Medicaid fraud
This is some cruel & terrifying stuff — feel-good totalitarianism —channeled through a smiling, jouncing marionette whose strings you can almost see in the video. What a strange, strange affect. Half his consciousness is absorbed in wondering how his weird lines are coming off
Justin Trudeau says that vaccine passports are "all about" rewarding certain freedoms to people who have "done the right thing"— and that those who "still resist" simply won't get to enjoy those same freedoms.
Help us fight this twisted tyranny:
I don't think I've read a more monstrous tweet, well, ever. It's also poorly reasoned. Wisdom has nothing at all to do with tech knowledge or being culturally up to date. Perhaps the opposite.
Maybe old people shouldn’t all commit seppuku, but we need to think creatively about how they can have dignity in a world where many are only burdens. With technological change becoming more rapid, they no longer even have wisdom to offer young generations. Need new solutions.
Actually lost friends over Fauci. I really didn’t buy what he was selling. They did. Social media and the mainstream press were on their side, backing the man absolutely, mocking, demonizing, and banning his skeptics and critics. They acted like they knew something. They did not
There is no “crisis of trust” in America. There is a crisis of trustworthiness. That so many distrust persons and institutions who have misled them is, to me, a sign of health, not something to be alarmed about. What’s alarming is the lying.
Just watched the president come on TV in some semi-emergency way to defend his memory and cogency and then repeatedly forget what we was saying
Everything feels like a put-on now
Buy physical books now. Great ones, good ones, bad ones, ones you happen to like. Store them safely as you would treasures. They are. Some will become unavailable soon, I suspect, for reasons that may not be stated candidly. If I’m wrong, what have you lost?
We, the library
I actually lost friends over what they felt was my inadequate esteem for Dr Fauci. They were very upset with me & made a big issue of the matter. Now the regime itself seems to have ditched him. He’s nowhere to be found. How strange that showing loyalty to him was once a test
Sitting here in awe as the rationalizers rationalize, big media is silent, &
@mtaibbi
rolls on like Patton w/ his unfolding Twitter Files scoop, gathering followers & retweets by the scores of thousands & showing us how corporate-political speech suppression really operates. Wow.
Turns out high school English was the most important class we ever took. We read Orwell & Huxley. They taught us about the threats to humanity from information control & from authoritarian manipulation by “science” & mass psychological conditioning
Now comes the exam
My rule used to be if the trip is under a 1000 miles, drive, don’t fly. I’m raising that limit to 1500. It’s simply awful up here. Gagged, silent people, gulag flight attendants, all the window shades drawn. Pure corporate captivity.
Get ready for months and years of news stories and essays on the terrible damage caused my various misguided Covid policies — stories and essays which will appear in the very same publications which championed the policies in the first place
If you find yourself on Twitter in the next little while wondering what to make of some slur against
@mtaibbi
, of some attack on his integrity or on his chops as a reporter or on his very being, I can save you some time, because I know something on the subject.
He's the best.
I strongly suggest that those wishing to make sense of current events ignore the headlines and delve into studies of mythology, ancient religion, psychoanalysis, and classic lit. We have left the mundane sphere of "politics" and are in a vaster, deeper, more symbolic domain.
Schumer: "Rupert Murdoch has a special obligation to stop Tucker Carlson from going on tonight [and] from letting him go on again and again and again [because] our democracy depends on it."
It was just announced on CNN that the Mueller investigation has secretly widened its focus to include the mysterious origins of human language and the sudden, unexplained collapse of traditional Goddess religions in the ancient Iberian peninsula
Guy puts his friends on, treats them like they’re stars, actually pays attention to what they say, live and breathes his awesome job, writes his own monologues, and look what happens:
Gutfeld! Becomes First Cable Show to Win Month of Late-Night
Let’s get real. The mainstream corporate press has never been freer. It floridly excoriates the president every day, w/unprecedented vehemence & unity. Meanwhile that same multibillion $ press crusades against fringe media & pushes for it to be silenced
Costco, a behemoth company which runs on its mass purchasing ability to save its customers money, tries its damndest to undercut everyone else on gas and only manages to to do it by a few pennies, if that. The margins in the retail gas business are minuscule, w/ scant wiggle room
My message to the companies running gas stations and setting prices at the pump is simple: this is a time of war and global peril.
Bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you’re paying for the product. And do it now.
Bill Gates admits that shutting down schools was a bad call; it didn’t stop case growth and the education deficit will take years to recover from.
Lockdown skeptics were right again and punished for it.
Who knew that Twitter, this sprawling social network, would profit so much from the personalizing influence of having an engaged, proud, responsive host in
@elonmusk
It genuinely feels like a kind of salon now, a real place for actual people, not just a sterile "platform"
Find something, anything, to be fundamentalist about, ideally something very, very old, because there will be no truth out there soon, none, just an endlessly shifting, windy phantasmagoria. So find a mast and lash yourself to it. Heck, even classical herbalism will do.
We didn’t want it to get to this point, but given the situation we find ourselves in, we have no choice.
Beginning Jan. 3, you must show proof you are fully vax'd to enter bars, restaurants, fitness centers, and entertainment/recreational venues where food/drink are served. 🧵
The weird part of the Dem reps' behavior at the
#TwitterFiles
hearing with
@mtaibbi
and
@ShellenbergerMD
today is that they were under no obligation to defend GovCorp censorship. It's not a party plank
Yet they did defend it. Compulsively. Aggressively. (And quite ineptly.)
I just clocked 1200 miles of driving around the west in 4 days. I talk to everyone about everything and anything and keep an eye out. People are facing a stiff gale of economic adversity. Strangers are unusually wary of casual conversation. And the new touch-screen McDonalds…
Postal workers, the one group of federal workers which actually goes door to door carrying stuff and which hands people actual objects countless thousands of times a day, is also the one group of federal workers exempt from vaccine mandates
They don’t even try to make sense
I’ve never seen anything like this. At some level it has to be intentional. No one was clamoring for a town hall. Grave deterioration is being thrust in our face. Cooper is racing through his question as though to keep from laughing. It feels like the work of enemy propagandists
We live under an almost solid dome of propaganda now. The cracks and apertures where truth shines through are like stars in a planetarium. They make interesting patterns but they are merely suggestive of a cosmos beyond our ken. It’s a struggle to remember it’s really there
Turned on a major cable network news show tonight, almost by accident. Watched for 60 seconds. The exaggerated rhythmic controlled hysteria of the delivery, backed by changing graphics, was like an alien transmission or a mainline injection of weird narcotics. Won’t do that again
A network of public interest groups and lawmakers, nervous about former President Trump’s potential return to power, is quietly devising plans to foil any effort on his part to pressure the U.S. military to carry out his political agenda.
I will be tweeting against this video all day because it depicts the end-stage masturbatory fall of our species & I’d rather not have to travel back in time someday to destroy it when I can start right now
Woke is over. It’s quaint. A period piece. No room for such bunk, such affluent effluvia, in the ascendant, inevitable New Sparta
It’ll take a bit to show, but things have turned
So lifelong reporter
@mtaibbi
shares a 100k $ prize from the National Journalism Center for his Twitter Files stories on Wednesday night
And Wikipedia rejects any mention of it in his bio
Yes you live in a heavily censored society
And it's getting worse
Someone needs to investigate and report on the great mystery concerning Bill Gates: What is the source of his apparently unshakable belief that the public or much of the public is looking to him for answers?
They’re not even claiming anymore that COVID will end or be resolved, just shifting blame and making threats and targeting younger and younger kids with shots while using it to excuse their host of failures. It’s the Vietnam of public health wars. Total quagmire
And money in it
Actually, it’s the Oliver Darcy problem we have to figure out.
It is this: What to do about the “intelligentsia” & the press using their 1st Amendment Rights to call for the abolition of others’ 1st Amendment rights & thus the tacit nullification of the 1st Amendment itself
"We are going to have to figure out the OAN and Newsmax problem. These companies have freedom of speech, but I'm not sure we need Verizon, AT&T, Comcast and such bringing them into tens of millions of homes,"
@alexstamos
tells
