Schools across FL are under pressure to privilege the ideological preferences of a select few, over the rights of all. Thatโ€™s a sad prospect for the future of public education... and itโ€™s a devastating indictment of the state of our democracy. /15

This is where this is all heading-- increased, direct government censorship of books. Of a kind not seen in the US in generations. Of a kind that the First Amendment is meant to protect against. Join our movement to #FreeTheBooks ! Learn more and support:

Someone make it make sense. Frisco ISD in Texas banned Stephen Hawking's book on Black Holes and Baby Universes yesterday. Why would you ban this book from schools? @penguinrandom @PENamerica

God this is chilling. At what point is this recognized as 'McCarthyism' or worse? Helene Gold, the New College head librarian recently fired, tells what happened: โ€œI hung up the phone,โ€ Gold said, โ€œI looked at my colleague, and I said, โ€˜Itโ€™s happening.โ€™โ€

It's not just @TheAmandaGorman . This book was challenged in Miami Dade county for "CRT and gender ideology" by a single parent, too. The district acknowledged it was written for kids aged 5+, but decided it was inappropriate before 6th grade... ๐Ÿ‘€ ๐Ÿงต

Why do Maine districts keep Gender Queer on shelves when its been challenged? B/c they follow their policies and actually read the book. Critical case study here from @veronikellymars @BookRiot

Yet another media specialist shows empty classroom shelves in Duval, FL. The district insists books are not banned, and DeSantis says his laws had nothing to do with it. Media specialists were told to "err on the side of caution." They are. #FreeTheBooks

Struggling to keep up with all the education censorship and chaos in Florida? Who isn't. But here's what's clear: DeSantis and state education administrators ought to stop denying this is all of their own making. My latest for @PENamerica in @SunSentinel .

Students continue to protest book bans in Central York, PA. Here, from @veronikellymars , @BookRiot , a collection of their voices: โ€œI think the adults arenโ€™t listening to the students because they donโ€™t believe we are capable of thinking for ourselves."

At this rate, vetting 3,000 books/week, Duval county in FL will complete its review of the approx. 1.6 million titles in its district in... 533 weeks, or 10 years. Tell me again that isn't book banning? Or that this hasn't been b/c of vague, punitive laws? Censorship is the goal.

We already know speech can be volatile. And, easily misconstrued. Moving to punish vaguely defined categories of speech is not the right response to this moment. There are other - better - ways to fight hate than sacrificing academic freedom and clamping down on discourse. /5

And just like that, 20 additional titles have been added to the 23/24 list in @oneclayschools . One man has filed over 700 challenges in this district of 35K+ students. Of those students, only 3 - yes, 3 - had parental restrictions in the library.

Girls can't play Newsies. Schools can't do Shakespeare. One school in KS even banned just reading The Laramie Project. The effort to control schools & suppress education has come for theater, and the details are alarming. From @MichaelPaulson @nytimes :

"Actually, it should be damn hard to banish a book. Freedom of expression still is an important principle in the country, at this hour...Iโ€™ve never been much for slippery slopes, but it seems like weโ€™re standing at the top of an authoritarian bobsled run."

There's a MAJOR book banning effort underway in Leander, TX. School district caving to parents who want to remove various LGBTQ+ books and graphic novels as a choice for ALL students. This thread lays out the background and how teachers are pushing back. Pls support, amplify!
