I hate to provide more sobering news but the rapid daily upswing in cases in Broward County and (soon) Dade County in

spreads perfectly well in warm weather. Our highs are in the mid 80s daily.

BREAKING: Trump took $300 million from the CDC to give to campaign friends to promote how well the pandemic is going.
Many times these last few years I’ve found myself grateful for

This is a really awful decision. And contrary to patient centered medicine, especially for immunocompromised patients. University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic reverse orders; will allow unvaccinated caregivers to stay on the job - .
Nearly 20K interactions and nearly 200K impressions. I’m happy to report that although

Just looked at the latest
#Florida
data and still 13% positive in
#Dade
, 12% positive in
#Broward
and 15% in
#PalmBeach
suggest late start in testing, undertesting and huge reservoir of infected patients who will rapidly cause upswing in hospitalizations here. Not good.
#COVID19
The 10% positivity rate of current testing is a very high number and puts us significantly higher than the U.K., South Korea, and China. Until we see the positivity rate decline significantly we are still not screening enough.
@mollywood
I am so very sorry. From a big fan of your journalism and a believer in science, induced immunity and common sense.
Sending positive thoughts your way. When you’re ready to do a story on the economics of vaccine refusal and impact on health care costs send me a DM.
Mental health is health. Dental health is health. Why don’t we cover these things even in “good” insurance plans? Not to mention for the legions without the best coverage, or with little or no coverage. Our system is so broken.
Kids (of all ages) are REALLY struggling with mental health issues. And it’s really hard to find professional help that takes insurance. Going to do a series on this on my show

Worth the 0:45 it takes to hear
@larrybrilliant
summarize the essence of the
#COVID19
situation and (IMHO) why it’s still a very fixable problem.
@ASlavitt
3/ SF: also stable. 450 Covid cases, just 16 new (graph), lowest new daily # since March 21st. 7 deaths, zero new. Everybody’s kinda reluctant to say SF has “flattened the curve” for fear of jinxing or – far more dangerous – lowering our guard. But we have

I'm told
@IngrahamAngle
has been going after me on her Fox News show the last few days? Not sure what the deal is, but if she has concerns I'm easy to reach. Also would remind her that I'm not a federal employee, nor paid by CNN, MSNBC, Fox News (or any news or media outlet).
@TheBlondeRN
@GovRonDeSantis
Also as a physician and father of four I also reject his narrative.
While I respect his right to go maskless, It is irresponsible to call all masking “COVID theater.”
I wish our governor wasn’t polarizing, bullying and divisive. Great leaders bring people together.
@chrissyfarr
I thought all of the same things. They supposedly tried to adjust for socioeconomic status as a confounding variable but impossible to see how that is possible. It is a luxury to be able to exclusively breastfeed for 12 months as recommended in Europe.
Today I pulled off a surprise 18th

Let me be clear: there's no scenario in which someone who looked like me, with my name, could get away with even six seconds of behavior like this at an airport, let alone sixty. Where on earth are the police? Security?
@BeschlossDC
Surprising how much game and locally harvested fish (eg smelts) dominate this menu. As was necessary before refrigeration and mass transport changed food production.

Why is it that people are more likely to take a physician’s advice to receive chemotherapy (with benefits against lethal diseases but substantial risks) than a physician’s advice to receive a vaccine (with clear benefits against a lethal disease with minimal risks)?
#COVID19
Found out that both of my triplet daughters who applied to

Breaking: Deborah Birx just now says that in their current model WITH mitigation (clearly suboptimal still) the current expectation is 80K-200K people in the US “succumbing” to

Think about that. The AR-15 fired bullets so fast (at innocent people) that the barrel got so hot it burned Mr. Shaw’s hand. No one needs to own these weapons of destruction.
#NeverAgain

This is James Shaw. He's a hero. His hands are burned severely from grabbing the assault rifle used to kill four people inside a Nashville Waffle House. He likely saved dozens of lives
We routinely give stem cell transplant patients at risk for strongyloidiasis courses of
#Ivermectin
.
But anyone who thinks this makes sense for
#COVID19
on the basis of existing evidence is mistaken.
And anyone who ingests veterinary drugs and refuses vaccination is a fool.
1/2 Through my policy advocacy work on neglected tropical diseases, I’m as responsible as anyone for the mass ivermectin Rx of tens of millions of people with river blindness, lymphatic filariasis, strongyloidiasis, and scabies. Ivermectin is a great medicine, but not for COVID19
Completely agree with
@ScottGottliebMD
here. Rapid, widely available and frequent in-home testing would radically expand our knowledge and freedom. Even if the tests were imperfect frequency and low cost would dramatically improve our situation.
#testing
#COVID19
To expand Covid testing access, in addition to easier collection like using saliva; we also need fast, accurate, cheap lateral flow tests (strips) which are popular in other countries, but seldom used in U.S. because of a bias toward lab testing. We must get testing to consumers.
As an academic physician in
#Florida
who has for decades rounded on immunocompromised patients wearing a mask, I think this defense by our surgeon general is absolute bullsh*t.
#COVID19
Those noting that N-95 respirators are the gold standard are correct. But we don’t know the inadequate masks are worthless. Even simple measures like frequent hand hygiene can have benefits. Also true that a false sense of security can be very dangerous.
#Coronarivus

Wishing my dear father (w/ me at a

50+ years of well controlled diabetes, >30 years after a premature MI. I owe his presence to modern medicine.
He continues to inspire me with his wisdom, kindness and his moral compass.
This terrifying list pretty much sums up
#Florida
politics right now.
And yes—I also blame our governor for stoking the flames of madness.
The consequences will be far reaching—pulling a centrist state to the far right and harming our reputation and economic prospects.
To give you an idea of the crap we are dealing with in Florida right now. Just this week:
- DeSantis pushing bad medicine
- 'Don't Say Gay' Bill
- 'White Discomfort' Bill
- 15 Week Abortion Ban
- Insane Surgeon General
- Corruption at Dept. of Ed
We have to win.
Being forced to present ID and evidence of vaccination to dine indoors at restaurants on our honeymoon in San Francisco hasn’t felt like an attack on our freedom.
Instead it has allowed us to enjoy indoor dining without the usual fear that we would certainly feel in

I signed it. I suggest other physicians read it and consider whether to sign this, as well, to send a message to the

Some thoughts for
#college
parents after a scary night (daughter fine after being struck by a car biking): 1. Get roommate’s cell phone numbers 2. Keep dorm desk contact numbers and/or parent hotlines on your phone. 3. Reinforce basic safety measures—her helmet saved her life.
OK. Anyone else having to explain to their aging, quarantined, increasingly stir crazy mother that even though you’re at home, you’re actually working and can’t talk now?
#COVID19
#quarantine
Great graphic by
@ScottGottliebMD
that points to a scary problem. Many effective
#vaccines
are simply underutilized in target populations. In this case, this could result in a failure to achieve critical levels of
#herdimmunity
and a prolonged
#COVID19
pandemic.
#VaccinesWork
When we get a covid19 vaccine, one question is whether enough consumers will use it. Since 20% or more may have been infected by that time, we'd need to get perhaps 40% utilization to achieve herd immunity. These are rates of uptake of other vaccines among indicated populations.
On this day in 1916, Ota Benga, an African native who suffered inhumane treatment by being kept in a zoo, committed suicide.
He had been kidnapped in 1904 from Congo, and taken to America and exhibited at the Bronx Zoo with monkeys.
A THREAD!
Two people dear to me today were lectured by separate strangers for wearing a mask today.
One was in a crowded airport baggage claim—the other a small condo elevator.
They were both told
@CDCgov
said no one should be wearing masks anymore. Hope this shaming doesn’t worsen.
After 6 months of chemo, transfusions, and some seriously scary shit, my husband is finally getting a stem cell transplant to treat and hopefully cure AML.

I completely agree with
@BarackObama
.
“If all you’re doing is casting stones, you’re probably not going to get very far.”
There are individuals, some physicians, who don’t create, don’t lead and become professional stone throwers. Don’t be one of them.
This needs to say vaccinated people “with breakthrough infections” as there are individuals who think that this implies vaccinated individuals exposed to
#COVID19
are as likely to have high viral loads following exposure, which of course isn’t correct.
Now 13 hours after my
