Tonight, we gather as a CMU community united in heartbreak, & in solidarity with the Jewish community & the city. We honor the lives that were lost & we seek & offer comfort to one another. And together, we speak out in one loud voice against bigotry & hatred in all forms.
Changing the world doesn't always require cutting-edge brain science and big data.
Sometimes, changing the world is about being kind and showing up for other people.
Earlier tonight, we were honored to recognize Melody Herzfeld with the 2018 Excellence in Theatre Education Award with

We are committed to and will advocate for our international community members, all of whom add to our intellectual landscape and vibrant community. More from Provost Jim Garrett on yesterday's ICE announcement.
Today's reversal is a monumental victory for international students everywhere. We'll continue to advocate for all of you and safeguard the globally inclusive mission that makes Carnegie Mellon such a vital engine for creativity, innovation and opportunity.
Last night the Fence was painted changing “Black Lives Matter” to “All Lives Matter,” which students then painted back. While CMU doesn’t typically comment on speech conveyed in this student-regulated forum, we unequivocally affirm that

Try it for yourself.
“Too many people go through life complaining about their problems. I've always believed that if you took one tenth the energy you put into complaining and applied it to solving the problem, you'd be surprised by how well things can work out.”
- Randy Pausch, "The Last Lecture"
"If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself. The dreams will come to you.”
On this day 14 years ago, only a few weeks after learning he had just months to live, CMU professor and alumnus Randy Pausch delivered what became known as "The Last Lecture."
Three years ago, the horrific attack at the Tree of Life synagogue inflicted deep wounds on our Jewish friends and neighbors.
Today, we remember the 11 lives taken, honor all who were affected, and reaffirm our commitment to combatting hatred in any form.

Andrew Carnegie famously said, "My heart is in the work." At Carnegie Mellon University, we think about work a little differently. If you watched the Tony Awards tonight, you saw a glimpse of that. Watch the full length "Today, We Work" video.

Today, the smiley emoticon turns 41. It was invented on Sept. 19, 1982, by Scott Fahlman, a research professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon. That makes us :-)
Here's the story of Smiley, told by the inventor himself:
Today we commemorate the tragic events of 9/11 with a lone bagpiper playing at the 9/11 Memorial Tree on The Cut.
The Memorial Tree was planted in memory of the seven CMU alumni who were lost that day.
Congratulations, Class of 2025+ 🥳 Welcome to Carnegie Mellon, where Tartans of all kinds come together to pursue their passions and make an impact.
