Anyone who calls nursing a calling & lists handholding as the principle job description may needs to spend 24 hours shadowing nurses on the wards or in the community
Steve Barclays trending for all the wrong reasons - please can we get
@patcullen9
trending for the right reasons. Strong nursing leader & union negotiator. In a week of unbelievable pressure she continues to advocate for nurses & nursing -she has our backs let’s have hers
@rcsloggett
I think another important point to consider Richard & that’s the charismatic leadership displayed by
@patcullen9
- Govt & in particular
@SteveBarclay
seem to be struggling working out how to negotiate with a strong intelligent political nurse who isn’t capitulating
And in other news - my papers have now gone in & my resignation & from Dec I will draw down my NHS Pension.Recognise that I am extremely fortunate & part of a ever decreasing number of nurses who have this type of pension. New chapter in life coming right up -very excited 😜
Can we please show our
@CNOEngland
a bit of love this BH WE as well as some respect for doing what she has been doing. I know I couldn’t stand up in front of national media and deal with those questions. Also don’t forget unpleasant comments are an indirect attack on nursing
When nurses make complexity look effortless don’t make the mistake of thinking this is easy and / or can be achieved through swapping in another practitioner (when we make something look simple doesn’t mean it is)

Try putting that person on night duty in a hospital in charge of 30 beds with 30 sick patients whom may deteriorate rapidly or even die during the night - with support from unqualified staff.
Please stop with the inane tweets. Nursing is fighting to be seen as a safety critical graduate profession.Going on strike to support safe staffing, patient safety, & fair pay.These tweets stereotype us. Makes us smaller then we are. Worse it encourages others to see us like this
Yesterday was my
#NHS
birthday - 34 years as a nurse. During that time 11 nursing roles / 10 different organisations + working overseas in Romania 🇷🇴 - I love working for the NHS & if times I’m critical it’s because I only want the very best
Kate Shemirani can still call herself a nurse & no one can stop her - she can educate the public still using her nurse title & no one can stop her - help us protect
#PatientSafety

Told today by a boy who had come to the the vaccination centre that I couldn’t possibly be a nurse as I was a man - we both agreed that girls / women made excellent footballers & you pretty much could be what you wanted to be
Thinking of everything that has happened over last 48 hours and over the last 5 weeks I dug out my old nursing badge as well as my first fob watch (which I think my parents purchase as a gift). The badge is hallmarked.
#Proud2BANurse
how quickly can you find yours?
The complexity of nursing is hidden (often by nurses). Nurses contribution to patient safety is evidenced in over 1,000 papers & yet there is still a demand for more research - how do we help nurse leaders articulate that we don’t need more papers ?
@alisonleary1
@TheQNI
i am one of the 18,000 nurses who will retire this year
@MattHancock
- unusually (for once) the government has been super quiet 🤫 on how it plans to encourage me (after a 30 year + career) to stay on to help out ? Appreciate some clarification & details before making a decision
🆘 health & social care arguing
#bbclaurak
that the NHS has an additional 5,000 beds this winter without clarifying where the additional healthcare staff are coming from to support the extra numbers ? A bed is meaningless without the staff to go alongside
They are threatening nurses with their registrations. They are threatening nurses ….understand … the secretary for health & social care has decided the best strategy here is not to negotiate or talk or have a meeting it is to pick a fight & hope to bully nurses into submission
Nursing is a profession of vigilance. Nurses are important not just for what they do but for what they observe (& prevent) “careful watching”

Men are not a ‘vast untapped resource’ for nursing & it’s not our job to solve 40,000 vacancies - increased pay & better working conditions will do that. This is as offensive to me as I suspect it will be to my female nursing friends & colleagues

I would have thought health of the population might factor

I qualified as a nurse with a certificate,then I wanted a diploma, so I got a diploma,then I wanted a degree so I got a degree,then I wanted a Masters so I got a Masters. 3 weeks ago I Passed my PA module. Don't tell me nurses are not adaptable, or tenacious

for such a prompt response - nurses & others gave their lives during COVID to care for patients -

Today at Vac clinic I spent a greater amount of time then usual working with someone having their first 💉 & supported two individuals with 📉 immune systems make choices. Expert interactions, ⬆️ comm skills,client safety, emotional intelligence - Nursing is never just Nursing
Just finished this (appropriate for today
@RCNNI_NorthernB

Wait till you tell them about teaching presentations -over head projector (that always looked like it could spontaneously burst into flames), ascites that could only be once (neither environmentally friendly / useful for updates),& permanent markers that went always went missing
For the record you could have gone with expert graduate profession - largest global safety critical healthcare workforce - number one internationally trusted profession by the public year on year -
@alisonleary1
@shinybluedress
I think this backs up what we have said in the past Alison -a lot of the public don’t actually understand what nurses do & many of them feel entitled to give an uninformed opinion.Nursing still still has a way to go in establishing itself (in the public’s eyes)as safety critical
40,000 nurses left the NHS last year. They didn’t do this because they were happy. Any other profession / industry these numbers would be raising alarm 🔔 bells but for far too long nurses have been taken for granted. Vote today

Business Minister Nadhim Zahawi brushes off concerns about hospital waiting lists of 10 million by end of year with “we’re building 40 new hospitals” & recruiting more nurses.
No wonder he declined an interview on
@GMB
where he would face real scrutiny
If we are serious about recruitment & retention of NHS workforce we need to aim for the tripartite of flexible working - supervision / mentorship - access to educational development.Each one on its own is powerful but all three combined shows a level of organisational commitment
Sorry about the terrible screen shots, but a good piece from Sam Foster, Chief Nurse at Oxford University Hospital writing for the British Journal of Nursing on flexible working. Cites the work of the fabulous
@Timewise_UK
too with some useful tools signposted in the piece.
Retirement lasted exactly 8 weeks - thrilled to to be back in North London working in primary care @ Hornsey with the vaccination team - a really warm welcome and a wonderful team. Great to be back
@johnsonmich18
Hello from the Hornsey Central Neighbourhood Health Centre! Today our team have been seeing patients who have been contacted by the NHS to receive their COVID-19 vaccination. It has been a really big team effort to make this possible so a huge thank you to everyone involved 💙
Huge amount of energy & enthusiasm

EOLC shouldn’t remain the sole propriety of Medicine in fact we all have a responsibility to integrate death & dying within a a societal / public heath context. EOLC = art / philosophy / spiritual / religion/ to name a few / docs aren’t failing us we are failing each other
Twice in two weeks, research shows doctors lack confidence in holding conversations about limits of treatment, preparing for not getting better, considering end of life options.
In a system that increasingly values numbers over quality of consultations, what can doctors do?
@alisonleary1
Do you think they would reduce the time airline pilots take to qualify? Of course not. Why is there so little respect for Nurses & Doctors ?

If we follow the NHS test & trace model to its logical conclusion Could we potentially see hospitals teams, whole care home teams, primary care teams removed to self isolate en masse based on a close contact / presumption of infection?
@lucyjones
I was able to drive to work yesterday and saw bin-men (women) / people going to work in supermarkets / the police / postmen /women / there are too many for me to tweet - I don’t mind being clapped for but we are only able to do what we do due to these silent heroes.
#InItTogether
@LeanneHPatrick
In a week when the PM used the following words to describe nursing “calling” “love” “hand holding””care” it shows how little respect the government has for the profession, & how it will use age old tropes to perpetuate gender stereotypes, weaken professional ID, & control wages

Over the last 30 years of my career the hospices had stood shoulder to shoulder with the statutory sector. They cared for my dying grandmother- aunt and mother. Now more then ever while resources are deployed to the NHS hospices need to be included in resource allocation.
Absolutely thrilled to have received this 🎁 in the post from
@NHSBT
@GiveBloodNHS
celebrating my 💯 milestone - did you know only 1% of the donating population complete 💯 donations - lets change that ❤️
Why do nurses leave? Pay is an issue but is one of many factors. Seeing less nurse retire & return which is a major concern as the population ages & increases in size. challenges are many. WF is seen as a expensive commodity rather then a safety critical necessity
@alisonleary1
Interesting article & I don’t deny the pressure of breaking bad news but would have been good to reference the CNS who often holds (literally & figuratively) the patient before,during & often after the consultation.Who takes the phone calls,makes phone calls, & is present always
@ShaunLintern
Other headline - NHS bosses managed to keep the NHS from collapsing during COVID (despite the Government trying to do so otherwise) but we need to identify easy targets to blame to distract from our appalling performance of recent times
We really need to talk about the global nursing workforce
@ICNurses
@HowardCatton
- exhaustion, stressed & taken for granted - from Italy to France to UK - why nursing disillusionment should give governments pause
@WeRGlobalNurses
Nurse staffing and inpatient mortality in the English National Health Service: The proportion of experienced nurses who are working in their usual place of work & senior nurse managers in a nursing team are significantly associated with patient mortality
Great to be
