A 26% fall in relative pay - in comparison to price of housing, fuel, exams - even just stethoscopes - whilst carrying a whole lot more student debt than previous generations - people shouldn’t be surprised by the huge mandate for #juniordoctors strike. I’ll hold your bleep 💪🏻

Just told my 17yo that I didn’t think it was a good idea to go to an end of term house party this weekend in case he got covid and then granny would have to spend Christmas on her own and he was so fucking reasonable about it that I burst into tears.

Two facts today: 1. The UK remains one of the world’s richest countries 2. Some of my lung patients are considering limiting oxygen or ventilator use this winter because they won’t be able to afford the energy bills. This crisis is not inevitable. It is a political choice.

One of the hardest and busiest days for our respiratory support ward of the whole pandemic so far - this thing is not going away. Please stay home if you can, wash your hands, socially distance - it’s vulnerable people who suffer the consequences of a relaxation of the rules.

What pisses me off most about the vaccine debacle is that if the government had managed this whole thing properly from April to December, we would be rolling out the vaccine against a backdrop of a few hundred cases a day, not trying to jab our way out of a shitstorm.

When I was 10, a teacher made a boy who got 3/10 in mental arithmetic stand on a chair for us all to shout ‘mental’ and I argued that this was horribly unfair and when I ran out of words I kicked the teacher in the shins.

Patient: I thought you were the social worker, not the consultant. Me, the heat having banished any last traces of tact: is that because I’m plump with curly hair and glasses? Patient: no, it’s because you listened to me before you spoke I am suitably chastened 😞

People think that courage is jumping out of a plane, or scaling a mountain. But sometimes it’s talking to someone you really love about how and where they want to die, so you can make sure their wishes are honoured, even though your heart breaks at the thought of losing them ❤️

‘Lifestyle medicine’ and ‘lifestyle diseases’ should both be banned phrases. They are descriptions that only serve to show up the privilege of the people who use them, rather than getting to the root of the determinants of health. Very aggravating.
