There’s a particular type of house in suburban Omaha that people (including my mom lol) love to point out appear to have the word “poop” on them.
Is this the architect’s subtle commentary on modern suburban-style homes yes or no
“Renters don’t pay property taxes”
Oh really, then where does my landlord get the money from to pay my building’s property tax bill? Do they have a special tree that grows property tax money?
*about 10 seconds after walking into work with 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground*
Boss: good morning! did you bike today?
Me: no, I walked
B: what do you mean you walked 🤯
M: it’s only 1/2 a mile! It’s safer than driving, and I have good snow boots

In class once I had a professor talk about Rancho Santa Margarita and every time he said the name it sounded less and less like a real place
Seriously why are there so many gay urban planners. There are three of us living in just my one apartment building (that I know of). So many planners in my company are also gay.
It’s actually kind of insane how much larger Indy is than people from the coasts think. Some cities we are larger than:
San Francisco
Seattle
Denver
Nashville
Washington DC
Las Vegas
Boston
Detroit
“Straight people don’t get a pride festival”
Wrong. It’s called the College World Series. It happens every June and it’s literally the reason Omaha doesn’t get to have an LGBTQ pride festival during LGBTQ pride month.

It’s the most fun when you try to tap but can’t get it to work, so then you insert the chip, but the chip won’t read so the machine asks you to swipe the old fashioned magnetic stripe that the credit card companies wanted to move away from.
Looting is happening today in a part of St. Paul formerly known as Rondo. It was the heart of the black community in STP until I-94 was constructed through the area, displacing hundreds of black families and businesses. The community was destroyed decades ago, Tomi.
@StatisticUrban
Dallas is the 4th largest metro area in the whole USA and yet it feels very culturally irrelevant to me. What even goes on in Dallas? I sincerely couldn’t tell you.
@2024dion
I once was working on parking code updates in a former job and I asked my boss if we should ban off street parking at bars. He shut down that idea pretty quickly lol. I think it’s so insane that zoning encourages drunk driving like that.
@the_transit_guy
The curves are much less dramatic in real life. The photo was taken with a telephoto lens which makes it look bad.
Side note, I’ve personally reasearched this segment of light rail. It has reduced traffic by 7,800 VPD and helped densify the corridor. It’s very good transit.

Yeah. Maybe to increase efficiency you could make the vehicles bigger so they hold more people. You could also link several vehicles together to further increase capacity. Perhaps run them all on a fixed guideway too? Idk just a thought. I wonder if this technology exists.
lol anyone remember when the Nebraska unicameral abolished the death penalty in 2015 with a veto-proof majority including a bunch of republicans and the governor was so pissed that he poured his own money into a ballot initiative to get it reinstated?
In Nebraska our AG is now unilaterally declaring that laws *duly enacted by the legislature* are unconstitutional, totally sidestepping the judicial system. This action is so anti-democracy it’s almost unbelievable.
Nebraska's AG and top election official combined today to nullify a state law restoring felon voting rights in a move that one lawmaker called "chilling and breathtaking and striking and wrong."

Utah Transit Authority. For a city its size, I never expected Salt Lake to have such extensive transit options before I moved there. I could basically take the bus or the train anywhere I needed to go.
@maxdubler
It’s honestly wild that so many people act like buildings don’t have a finite lifespan. Not even the original builders intended these things to last forever!
@carmichaemeleon
Oh of course they won’t. It’s just insane that some people believe renters aren’t affected by property tax policy and can’t have valid opinions about it.
@ButtersV2
@brianschatz
True. I actually think Warren's idea would play better than a 60-70% top marginal income tax, and by some estimates it would generate more revenue. Warren is probably one of the most intelligent people in American politics so I trust she knows how to craft good policy.

Not true at all. One of my jobs is working at a natural grocery store. We have plenty of employees who are "worth the hours" but you can only do so much with scheduling when corporate comes down with the iron first and mandates store-wide hour cuts.
@the_transit_guy
Crossing a street while waving a bright colored flag is so needlessly humiliating for people walking. Most people don’t even use the flags when they’re provided because there’s an inherent understanding that it’s a totally asinine intervention for road safety.
A very preliminary rendering of a proposed 18,000-seat arena that could house USA volleyball and a professional hockey team at Nebraska Crossing in Gretna.
Walking across the street at 72nd and Dodge is a tragically humiliating experience. Anyone who thinks the new main library location will be just as accessible to people outside of cars as the old downtown location is dead wrong.
@TaylorWAnderson
SLC is in a really weird place right now where housing prices are beyond astronomical but employers haven’t adjusted adjusted their salaries accordingly (at least not in my field)
Being an urban planner is so great. I just love signing off on permits for single family McMansions in low density sprawl subdivisions during a historic heat wave and extreme wet bulb temperature event exacerbated by climate change. This is what I was born to do.
@ButtersV2
@brianschatz
You're mixing up AOC and Warren lol. Warren proposed a 2% tax on wealth over $50m and 3% on wealth over $1b. AOC floated the idea of a 60-70% top marginal tax rate. Two very different things.

It's a pre-fab accessory dwelling unit, a.k.a. granny flat. It's meant to be used as an extra home that you rent out or let family members stay in on a property that already has a house on it.
@LpWhisperer
Now that just makes no sense. If buildings routinely don’t “cash flow” what incentive do landlords have to even be in the business at all?
@jahorne
The walk will feel like nothing in a pedestrian friendly environment, to the point that you probably don’t notice or don’t mind the time. In a pedestrian hostile environment, it’ll feel like a long time because you’re not having a good experience. So it really depends.
@MassGovernor
If you want to stick it to Texas and other red states in a non-performative way you should consider fixing the cost of living crisis that prevents LGBTQ people who might otherwise move to Massachusetts from doing so 🤷🏻
@pushtheneedle
A raised intersection. It prioritizes pedestrians by eliminating the need for them to chamge elevation when passing through and creates a visual hierarchy that communicates the elevated area is first and foremost a space for people walking.

I mean the people saying this are not actually environmentalists. They just don’t want to look at wind turbines and they’re willing to let the planet burn to ensure they never have to.
"There’s a strong demand for short-distance corridor trains in the United States to provide that transportation option for travelers that don’t want to drive or fly.”

Omaha-Kansas City. Especially if it was an extension of the Missouri River Runner. I’d be in KC like every other weekend if there was a reliable train with a good schedule I could take instead of driving 2.5 hours.

Any soap, anti-bacterial or not, inactivates the virus by destroying its outer lipid bilayer. All soaps and detergents are surfactants, which destroy fatty/oily substances by nature.

Also you should be able to use EBT cards in grocery delivery apps and doing so should automatically waive delivery fees. This simple change could go a long way in addressing inequitable access to healthy foods.

Maybe this is true? But I kinda feel like the Republicans will call Democrats socialists no matter what. I mean, even the most moderate, middle of the line, even conservative democrats were blasted as "socialists" and people believed it
I wish Omaha had an LGBTQ+ concert band. Something like the River City Mixed Chorus but for people like me who are better with instruments than vocals. I need an excuse to start playing trombone again.
I’m on the light rail in Minneapolis and someone is smoking on board. I’m sorry but the weirdos who think this is okay are wrong. A smoky smelling train car is unpleasant and unhealthy, and the smoking ban should be enforced if you want to attract riders.

It’s a bit of a cliche, but this feels like a case where the cruelty really is the point. I don’t see any rational justification for these restrictions.

I’m sorry, since when does the attorney general have authority to decide whether laws duly enacted by the legislature are constitutional? Isn’t that a judge’s job?
