It’s just two weeks until the City of Sydney is 100% renewable powered!
Every street light, library, pool and depot run by the City will be powered by 100% renewable electricity, 100% of the time.
When the NSW Police confirmed that the document was falsified, it was the community's expectation that the truth would surface and that the Minister would be held accountable. Faith in our democratic institutions will be further eroded until these questions are answered.
It’s been fantastic to see the Aboriginal flag flying above the Harbour Bridge this NAIDOC week.
But Sydney always was, and always will be Aboriginal land, so the flag should fly all year round.
When the AFP handed down their decision not to investigate Angus Taylor over his use of a falsified document to attack me, and the work of the City, a lot of people told me they were not surprised.
Today’s Daily Telegraph features a double-page spread challenging the City’s commitment to climate action by accusing us of flying too much.
Sound familiar? It’s the same argument Minister Taylor levelled at the City some weeks ago.
The AFP ruled there was no sufficient harm done to warrant an investigation, but did not bother to interview me as a factor in determining that. Now we know they didn’t speak to the Minister either.
This morning, one of our Liberal Councillors told Sky News the upcoming
#ClimateStrike
would cause: "untold chaos and economic loss throughout Sydney and across the globe."
Do you know what's actually going to cause "untold chaos and economic loss"?
Climate change.
We are a country on the front line of climate change – this summer’s devastating drought, bushfires and storms has proven that.
We are also a wealthy nation, and the largest per-capita emitter in the OECD.
And yet, we are a country without legislation on climate change.
BREAKING: We’re bringing our net zero emissions target forward a decade, from 2050 to 2040!
The accelerated target will form part of the City’s new strategic plan, Sustainable Sydney 2050 – it’s our responsibility to do all we can to reduce emissions steeper and sooner.
It seems the AFP are very happy to go after journalists, but not a Minister of the Crown.
The question seems to be, are the AFP working in the interests of the community?
With high temperatures forecast today and persistent bushfire smoke 11 times higher than hazardous levels,
@NSWHealth
is reminding people to look after themselves, and check in on neighbours.

@CityofSydney
I think
@murpharoo
from the Guardian sums it up best, stating the AFP’s failure to investigate the Minister has ‘corrosive consequences’ for our democracy.
It is nearly beyond belief that the Minster is still, after months of intense scrutiny, yet to explain the origin of the fraudulent document he used to accuse the City of egregious spending on travel.
Today we began our renewable future – the City's operations are now powered by 100% renewable electricity.
That’s what real climate action looks like.
It’s time for all governments to join us.
We see trees as essential infrastructure – as important as roads and internet.
That's why we've invested so heavily over the last decade, and are the only city in the country to have increased our tree cover over that time.
For a Federal Minister to sign his name to a baseless attack, when he should be focusing on how to reduce Australia’s emissions, especially in wake of the horrific summer we have just experienced, is a shocking example of a minister not focused on what he should be doing.
Women should be safe in their homes, safe in their workplaces, safe everywhere.
I joined thousands at Town Hall today to
#March4Justice
– our numbers increase, our voice gets ever louder. Enough is enough.
Just announced: We’re installing six new safe cycling links!
Not in the coming months, but over the next few weeks – so Sydneysiders can get back to work on their bike.
We’ve taken our first all-electric street sweeper for a test drive!
It’s quiet, prevents 99.8% of dust collected from escaping, and, it’s emissions free.
It can sweep our footpaths, plazas and bike paths for 8 hrs on a single charge. Keep an eye out for one near you!
When it comes to emissions, there's a real shortage of good news stories.
So today I was thrilled to announce that by July 1 2020, the City's operations will be powered by 100% renewable energy.
Ministers of the Crown must take responsibility for what comes out of their office, and so many questions are still to be answered – we still don’t know where the false document originated from.
The scenes from our otherwise locked down city this afternoon were awful and shocking.
We have the right to protest – when it is peaceful/does not endanger others. Today’s protest was neither.
This illegal gathering has compromised our efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
We’re proud of our record on climate change, which has been the highest priority for us since 2008. We’ve set the targets, done the work, and achieved them.
After 16 days the Electoral Commission has completed its count – I'm so honoured to share that I will be returned as your Lord Mayor with 67.9% of the vote.
If there are no ramifications for a Minister of the Crown using falsified documents to level baseless political attacks, such attacks will continue and community faith in elected officials will continue to plummet.
We deserve better.
“With the AFP no longer investigating the incident, Angus Taylor appears to have got away with using a falsified document & inflated numbers to attack Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore.”
Tomorrow, the City’s operations will be powered by 100% renewable electricity.
This is an important step, and one that I’ve been looking forward to since we signed our new power purchase agreement in October.
Over the last three weeks, we’ve been trialling our first electric garbage truck.
We have been testing whether the quiet trucks would fit through our laneways and perform as efficiently as diesel vehicles – so that one day soon, our garbage truck fleet can also be emissions free.
I commend independent MP
@zalisteggall
for bringing this private member's bill to Parliament, and hopefully, some practical commitment to climate action.
Sydney, it’s time to stay home.
The State Government’s decision to move to a more comprehensive shutdown of non-essential services has been made on the advice of our state’s best medical experts.
We must listen to them.
Whatever you think of Barangaroo and its buildings, the way authorities bent over backwards to sacrifice precious public foreshore land to private gaming interests remains an outrageous betrayal of the community’s trust.
We offset all the flights we pay for, and were the first local council in Australia to be certified as carbon neutral. We're also on track to reduce our emissions by 70% on 2006 levels, and by July 2020, all City operations will be powered by 100% renewable electricity.
I am shocked and disappointed the AFP will not further investigate the matter and shed light on a situation that has further eroded the community’s faith in the Federal Government.
We must not allow them to deflect from the reality that without urgent action on climate change, we are condemning our planet. And simply taking fewer flights isn't going to cut it – we need the Government to start taking this seriously, and enforce structural change.
Sydney is a city for all - where everyone is treated with respect and dignity no matter how they identify. Today on
#IDAHOBIT
, we should not forget that its message of zero tolerance for discrimination is for every day of the year.
As the Lord Mayors of the two largest cities in Australia, today we stand united for Yes23, because we believe a Voice to Parliament is essential for all Australians. cc:
@LordMayorMelb
I think it’s worth correcting the record when false information is supplied to and published in the media.
Concerned about the Murdoch press?
Sign
@MrKRudd
's petition and demand a Royal Commission to ensure a strong and diverse news media:
BREAKING: This New Year’s Eve, I can't wait to see the rainbow waterfall cascade from Sydney Harbour Bridge at midnight to celebrate a historic year for Sydney’s LGBTI community.
This isn't about flights though.
The underlying issues is what climate scientist
@MichaelEMann
refers to as “deflection”.
While those against action on climate change used to flatly deny climate science, their tactics have matured.
Now they don’t deny; they deflect.
It’s almost two months since the City of Sydney switched to 100% renewable electricity.
We’re reducing our emissions by 20,000 tonnes a year and we’ve created hundreds of jobs in regional Australia.
It’s official. A group of voters - twice the size of
@GladysB
's Willoughby electorate - have signed
@Peter_Fitz
's petition to remind the NSW Liberal Government that no one (but their corporate mates) wants these new stadiums.
From July 1 2020, the City’s operations will be powered by 100% renewable electricity.
The power will come from wind farms in Glen Innes and solar farms in Wagga and Shoalhaven.
That means while we’re cutting emissions, we’re also supporting job growth in regional NSW.
BREAKING: The City of Sydney will be powered by 100% renewables from next year!
We’ve also thrown our support behind NSW music festivals, and the Sydney community will finally get to have its say on our Central Sydney Planning Strategy, despite State Government delays.
These tactics seek to distract us from the reality that our government is presiding over a period of shameful inaction.
Vested interests are failing us while saying: “We’re not the problem; look at the hypocrites over there!”
Shame.
It’s not yet complete, but it is exciting to see Saunders Street cycleway in Pyrmont rideable!
Work is continuing on Miller Street as part of our project to complete a safe, separated cycle link between the ANZAC Bridge and the CBD.
It is nearly beyond belief that the Minster is still, after months of intense scrutiny, yet to explain the origin of the fraudulent document he used to accuse the City of egregious spending on travel and climate hypocrisy.
I am now an Officer (AO) of the Order of Australia. I am honoured to be recognised and am grateful for the opportunities I have had in both Parliament and the City. Thank you.
My full statement is here
What a magnificent sight – 50,000 beautiful people marching across one of the world's most iconic landmarks!
As we marched, we kept in our minds those who couldn't or can't march, and we called for the world to recognise the equality of 𝗮𝗹𝗹 people.
I am very concerned about the legislation being introduced by the NSW Government that would stop overseas greenhouse gas emissions from export coal being considered when courts are approving new mines.
When we relocated our Haymarket library collection to its new home in Darling Square, we asked the community how we should re-use this beautiful Chinatown building.
There was a resounding answer.
It is absurd that 100+ people have been arrested for peacefully protesting against the most serious issue of our time. We must phase out fossil fuels faster, fairly, and forever. I support peaceful protests and the
@RisingTideAus
blockade of the world’s largest coal port.
Deflectors say they want to address climate change, but only if the onus is on the individual and big business profits/the fossil fuel industry are protected.
Deflectors accuse us of hypocrisy – that if we were truly concerned about climate change, we would not fly.
While young people have done the least to cause climate change, they will be the generation that experiences its worst impacts.
Tomorrow, at 12pm in Sydney Square, join them as they strike to demand climate action from our governments now.
#ClimateStrike
Governments belong to people, and if politicians aren't doing their job, they can get out of the way.
Tonight, Councillor
@jem1ller
's message to the
#SydneyIsChoking
climate rally couldn't have been clearer.
Enough it enough. Climate action now.
From early December 2019, you’ll be able to travel down George Street just as they did in 1906.
Can you recognise any of the buildings along the route?

Change takes time – too much time – but 45 years after the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, our most iconic building is proudly adorned in the colours of progress and pride.
As
@SydWorldPride
kicks off I’m so proud of Sydney and how far we’ve come.
Happy Pride.
Today I have announced a $47.5 million package of support measures that will provide financial relief and support for artists, creatives and organisations working with our cultural community (like
@ABFNSW
,
@SupportAct
and
@navavisualarts
).
We’re talking about fewer than 30 return flights each year, for the entirety of the City’s 2,000 staff. Travel that allows city representatives to meet their international counterparts, to share experience, learn and return with a better understanding of global best practice.
Thank you and good luck,
@mcannonbrookes
.
Businesses: ✔️
Community: ✔️
Local Government: ✔️
Federal Government: ❌
There is no issue more pressing and our Federal Government keeps its head buried in the sand.
Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions have increased for four consecutive years - that’s why I’m calling on the
@cityofsydney
to declare a climate emergency at Monday’s council meeting.
This is one of the most important decisions in Australia – and it’s shocking a Federal Government is rushing these approvals just days before calling an election.
The link between climate change, drought and bushfires is irrefutable, yet the Federal Government neither prepared our nation for this climate disaster nor responded accordingly to our community’s urgent calls for action.
This morning I spoke with the
@JoeABCNews
about why Federal Ministers should focus on reducing emissions and providing reliable energy, not making up figures about travel by local government officials.
