In 2019, out of nowhere, I became allergic to almost everything I ate, had 24/7 heartburn and anxiety, and lost 26 lbs
I wrote about my two-year journey to find the root cause, how mainstream medicine fell short, and some lessons learned along the way:
The most thought-provoking part of
@tobi
's
@BetaKit
interview about tech in Canada:
"It's the same story over and over and over again."
"We started Canada on trapping beavers, and exporting the pelts to London for them to make all the money."

another W for canadian healthcare:
my mom just broke her hip and got diagnosed with severe osteoporosis
after 2 hours of research, it's clear to me she's been at *extremely* high risk for 9 years
but unless you're 65+, we don't test bone density
absolute negligence
the most unexpectedly impressive thing about
@socraticainfo
symposium was the attention to detail
- beautifully designed slides, tickets, even wristbands
- attendee matching site -
- lighting, camerawork, music selection
every aspect beautifully executed
I was asked the other day if I'd ever received a drunk text from a girl...
...today I realized the only drunk texts I've ever received are from my former team
Peru went from producing 0 blueberries in 2009, to the
#2
producer and
#1
exporter 10 years later
With some agricultural + logistical innovations and gov't support, they went from "it's impossible to grow here" to a $1B+ industry
All started with one entrepreneur, Carlos Gereda
"We produce oil, and send it to Houston where all the refineries and margins are."
"We educate everyone at U of T or Waterloo, and export them to Silicon Valley."
"We take the thing that's most important, and send it to whoever wants it, instead of building companies."

Just realized I've been making 5 cents a month in royalties from the one album my high school punk band has on Spotify / Apple Music
No better feeling than generating ✨passive income✨ while listening to your own music
Surprised my grandma with a new iPad today, and she got down to business pronto:
“Does this one have Netflix?”
“Yes, let me downlo-”
“OK Google show me the matchmaking show”
My biggest takeaway from
@lychkel
's design workshop is how quickly and systematically you can turn a C- design into an A- one, even as a non-designer
Insanely talented mentors, detailed personalized feedback, inspired a ton of confidence
Super high ROI event, highly recommend!
thank you toronto for my largest ever edition of da101 as a part of
@TorontoTechWk24
last night🤍
25 mentees worked on a design challenge throughout the night in timeboxed sprints, got 1:1 feedback from mentors and iterated, with some demoing their design transformations at the
Being the logo is so oddly satisfying
One of the coolest moments building Sodatone was taking a bet on
@TimescaleDB
super early on, and then years later going to their landing page and seeing "Warner Music Group" sitting next to companies like Uber, Coinbase, HP, and Lucid
shoutout to
@abetlen
and all the awesome speakers for hosting such a great event last night
@cohere
easily the most interesting conversations I've had at an event in a long time
(and s/o to whoever ordered that GF pizza, never seen that at a meetup before, much appreciated!)
Toronto AI devs come out next Thursday May 2nd to Cohere offices for the Toronto Local & Open Source AI Meetup!
We have some great speakers lined up including

Thank you

the hardest part about selling a startup is managing your psychology after you've sold it
Warner is signing double the number of artists via AI-driven A&R tool Sodatone than it did last year. Now, it’s hired a global head of Data Science. - Music Business Worldwide

Industry conferences are priced assuming a company is paying
As an individual, you can often get a 50%+ discount if you give them a reason to bet on you
Best to ask 1-3 days before the start date, once they've already hit their targets
Saved $5k across 3 conferences this year!
# of applicants for our job posting spiked 4X this week, and it's really sad to see
among them was a founding engineer at a 100+ person company in Toronto, which is absolutely crazy
Walked around UWaterloo campus today and reflected on my time here. Never have I felt simultaneously so deeply appreciative for and sorely let down by an experience. So much was positive, yet so much was lacking.
Seeing artists at bars accepting credit cards through Square so the audience can't make excuses for not having cash for the tip jar is the most delightful use of tech I've seen lately
100% true story: 6 VCs gather for breakfast in LA. One of them orders an acai bowl. The rest of them, in imperfect unison: "I'll have one of those too!"
10 years ago I assumed Moodle was a niche, innocuous piece of software
TIL Moodle is
#1
by LMS market share and was considered revolutionary in 2002 as the first major open-source learning platform
+ fun fact it stands for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment(!)
Sobering stats from the 2023 Daily Bread Food Bank report:
1. *Every* food insecurity indicator worsened
2. 122k people used food banks for the first time, 40% more than the COVID influx
3. 60% have post-secondary education, 30%+ have employment income
4. 2.5M visits, +51% YoY
something I don’t understand: doctors who scold their patients for consulting “Dr. Google” to try to make themselves better
what else do you expect people to do in the 2 weeks it takes to get a 15-minute appointment?
wish we all didn't jump so quickly to pitching things as "10x" better
many things are only 2x better (or just 20% better!) and it's okay to say that
hyperbolic claims → expectation/reality mismatch → people default to being skeptical, instead of seeing the potential
It’s interesting to think about how Spotify proudly highlights how much time you spend using their app - pretty much no other major consumer app that I use would consider this a good idea
Thankful for uber-aggressive suits at airport lounges who yell at their team over the phone...for showing me what I absolutely do not want to become one day.
In thermodynamics courses, we learn the textbook definition of entropy (effectively, “disorder”) but not the Greek etymological root, which translates to “transformation”. The latter adds immense depth to the meaning: disorder arises as a fundamental byproduct of transformation.
haven't heard anyone talk about how COVID changes music education
in-person classes are unsafe (spit flying everywhere), teaching over video is impractical, and theory/history only goes so far
why not start teaching thru music production software? cheaper, safer & more engaging
Few things bother me more than when people assert their opinions as fact. Screw all the leadership coaches and listicles that say you're "undermining your power" and "showing weakness" by qualifying your opinion with "I think".
