When College students take on a big American university, what kind of power are they struggling with?
Chartbook Newsletter 279 dips a toe into the political economy of
@Columbia

The Millennial generation, born between 1981 and 1996, control just 4.6% of U.S. wealth even though they are the largest in the workforce with 72 million members.
@BSteverman
@atanzi
I want to associate myself with Rashid Khalidi's devastating critique of the Columbia University administration infringement of free speech and blatant bias against pro-Palestinian students. This should not stand in a self-respecting university. It is a disgrace.
We are in truly dangerous spiral:
Brave Ukrainian resistance frustrates Russian attack -> Kiev refuses humiliating negotiations.
Russia about to ramp up destructiveness of attack
NATO members rushing weapons to Ukraine
EU/US announce major sanctions.
What is Russia’s next move?
Columbia/Barnard faculty have signed an open letter supporting our students, making the point that identifying with the suffering of Gazans and historically contextualizing the current war in Israel/Gaza is not anti-Semitic. Please read and share.
Students from Sharif University are under attack by security forces.
They don’t hesitate to spill the blood of these bright students who shout “death to the dictator”

Tom Cotton in NYT: We Should Buy Greenland
Do the responsible editors of

think publishing this kind of dangerous and risible nonsense contributes to “diversity” or “balance”?
So we are now in spectacularly dangerous territory:
Brave Ukrainian resistance frustrates Russian initial attack -> Kiev refuses humiliating negotiations.
Russia about to ramp up destructiveness of attack
NATO members rushing weapons to Ukraine
EU/US announce major sanctions.
Americans are wildly overoptimistic about chances of upward social mobility. Europeans are pessimistic. Actual mobility higher in Europe than in the US.
Despite fond liberal imaginings, WWII was not won by New Deal or FDR's bomber program. At home USA barely broke sweat. Work of crushing Nazis done by Stalinist SU. If we are "declaring war on climate change", will it be China carrying fight this time?
If rich countries are building houses at less than half the rate we did in the 1960s should we be surprised that real estate prices are rising to record levels? Asks
@TheEconomist
Shouldn’t we ask whether the debt brake in Germany is in conformity with constitution? How can a temporary super majority bind all future parliaments to an arbitrary numerical target without reference to a fundamental value on pragmatic grounds alone?
Gurner Group founder Tim Gurner tells the Financial Review Property Summit workers have become "arrogant" since COVID and "We've got to kill that attitude."
Astonishingly, America’s EPA preannounces the days on which it will monitor PM2.5 pollution. Using satellite data Eric Zou confirms that on the other days businesses pump out much higher levels of filth.
American voters favor a ceasefire and de-escalation in Gaza and support US use of leverage over Israel by a HUGE margin. This is not a marginal position but completely mainstream, across both parties.
In a much debated video message, German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck found clear words to explain why Israel's security is a fundamental principle for every German government.
Initially my response to the headline was "…?????? really".
Until I realized that in

Brazil’s 600 real per month auxílio emergencial actually turned 2020 into a remarkably good year for poverty-reduction. Brazil’s gini fell in 2020 from 0.55 to 0.49! Extreme poverty and inequality are a political choice. How will it choose in 2021?

Looking at this scatter plot of Covid mortality and GDP loss across EU, rather than a trade off, you might be tempted to say that there were simply some countries that handled the crisis well and others that did not.
Unused vaccines are a crime.
95 % of the AstraZeneca vaccine delivered to German state of Saxony have not been used. Further deliveries should cease. Reallocation to low income countries NOW.
By verbal instructions of German police
@yanisvaroufakis
was issued with a general ban on all activities „Betätigungsverbot“ apparently on orders of Interior Ministry without naming legal basis. This cannot stand!
France had administered 16% of 1.1m doses of AstraZeneca received. Germany, Italy 20%, Spain < 33%. Unless that rate rises all new supply should be reallocated to low income countries. We need to get shots in people’s arms. Unused shots = a crime.
During Jummah (Friday prayer) this afternoon, Columbia University students formed a human shield with blankets to provide privacy to those students participating in prayer after a video showing students praying on the lawn began circulating on social media

The UK is planning on massively increasing visa costs.

By the end of the century, Africa will be home to 40% of the world’s population – and nowhere is this breakneck-pace development happening faster than this 600-mile stretch between Abidjan and Lagos. This piece by Howard W. French is really eye-opening.
So on point!!!! Who has reason to be afraid here? Who has the power? The power to punish and destroy and disrupt lives? How can we abdicate judgement in this grotesque way!
When i wrote this

Biden’s vaccine triumph is a triumph for a policy of "America First". Unlike Trump, it doesn’t trumpet that fact, but it is all the more effective on that account. EU has exported five times more vaccine doses to America’s NAFTA “partners" Mexico&Canada than the US has.
🇺🇸 is currently sitting on over 100 million unused vaccine doses. An estimated 35-40m are

, which 🇺🇸 still hasn't authorised to use on Americans and probably never will.
It is an absurd situation while half of all doses made in 🇪🇺 are exported (chart

9% of working Americans (14 million) so far have been laid off as result of Coronavirus; 1 in 4 workers have had their hours reduced. Latest from SurveyUSA:

The successful social policy response to COVID shock showed that widespread poverty in USA (and any other rich country) is a matter of choice. You either spend the modest amount necessary to ensure that large numbers of children do not grow up poor. Or you don't.
More ambitious—but economically sustainable—expansions of our generally stingy welfare state could essentially eliminate poverty completely. While this vision isn’t politically realistic in the short run, the policy lessons of 2020 and 2021 should not be lost with today’s report.
Germany is significantly less unequal than the US (after taxes and benefits). But it is NOT more socially mobile as measured by father and son’s incomes. UK far more mobile! Very striking data from
