anyone who can read at all can develop the discipline to read seriously. if you read one 300 page book a week that's only ~40 pages a day, which you should be able to read in 2 hours. if you're going to take something seriously, 2 hours a day is not much.

at some point, every book-reading white boy is faced with a choice. you either have to become some kind of cringe/maudlin reactionary, or you have to admit that your daddy is an asshole. i'm here to tell you that you can make the right choice and keep your dignity

it’s amazing how people don’t understand that the first step to having power is to articulate what you would do if you had it. this is apparently something magical that only the right can do

every book about money published in the last ten years begins exactly the same way. my dissertation included. once upon a time there was the Great Financial Crisis and now i am going to reveal to you that money was always secretly political. gotta find a different angle in

It must be nice to believe that most people spontaneously share your beliefs and interests and the only thing in the way of your collective self realization is a small cadre of inexplicably powerful bad actors

Abusive systems perpetuate themselves because they are very good at making people afraid to speak out about them, and very good at coopting even basically good people into perpetuating this, out of loyalty to institutions and networks. That's why sociality is the origin of evil

What I'm proposing is that the only intellectually responsible way to read canonical texts is to make them objects rather than subjects of thought. They are sinister curiosities rather than models for emulation. You mustn't believe in advance that it says something worthy

i think it’s fun to read something that some preachy self important professor writes and follow their footnotes and show how they are pulling everything out of their ass. that to me is fun. it’s fun to play intellectual blood sports because i like WINNING and BEING RIGHT

hilarious to me that my position here is literally incomprehensible to so many people. cannot comprehend the possibility of any engagement with texts that isn't an erotic relation.

When I say "scholars should publish less" I mean that publishing something should be, in itself, a demerit. What, you're going to make us all read this? Really?

"loving books" is just plain dereliction of duty for scholars in the humanities, because the stakes of the objects we engage with are so high: when you're fucking around with the Old Magic you're dealing with a lot of genocidal shit, demands ethical seriousness
