In both 2008 and 2020 the D candidate for President won by 7M votes; in one, a landslide, in the other by skin-of-the-teeth. This is because, as you can see here, the R coalition became more spread out and geographically advantageous. Ds gained only in Safe R and Safe D states.

I made a map of the 25 districts that have gained and lost the most population. The gains are generally not in "the suburbs" as one might think, but rather the exurbs and outer-ring suburbs, while the losses are in declining Middle America, urban cores, and rural Black areas.

2018-2020 House swing time! Only 61 races swung towards the Democrats, and only ONE by 10% or more, with the 5.5% rightward national swing. Notice also that the two rock-ribbed Republican states Biden flipped, AZ & GA, contain a full QUARTER of the districts swinging left.

Ohio has been the epicenter of the Midwestern GOP Renaissance, and no place exemplifies that more than Stark County. Midsize and just south of Cleveland, it swung 24 points right from Obama to Trump, flipping red in the process! Similar shifts are happening all over the state.

My priors are slow to update. But slow is not never. NE-1, MN-1, even NY-19, all races with D gains that could be, in a vacuum, local. But NY-23? There was no coverage! And Democrats are still doing well! Lots of ratings changes to come, all of them of the left variety.
