I understand why people would think this, but it's wrong. US college administration is structurally reactionary. It exists to diminish faculty governance, undermine academic freedom, and direct the institution toward profit-oriented, rather than knowledge-oriented goals.

The cardinal error this profession continues to make is believing that history is declining in American universities because it is insufficiently 'publicly engaged.' But the actual reason is that history is declining bc it is not seen as a RESEARCH discipline.

University admins claim to be "data-driven" and "run universities like a business," but when study after study finds liberal arts majors get good outcomes, are cheap to run, and are in fact profit centers, admins cut them anyway for ideological reasons.
