I fundamentally do not understand the sudden mainstream adoption of the idea that, because students who carry Israeli flags into the midst of Palestinian protests face jeers and are ostracized by peers, those campuses are โunsafe for Jews.โ
But in this situation, sorry, Zionism really is an idea, and people really are only being rejected for their shitty ideas and politics (and interpersonal skills/tactics). Jewish students can and do walk through the protests every day (or join them!) without incident.
I am generally quite familiar with the idea that a lot of people in a place โdisagreeingโ with something that they characterize as an idea and that you characterize as fundamental to your identity can be jarring, uncomfortable, and untenable. I am queer. Hello.
@tomri33le
Noโpulling yarmulkes off of heads or otherwise accosting people just for wearing one is unacceptable and a genuine safety risk. I will not downplay that.
Like, obviously it should still be bodily *safe* to be an asshole counterprotestor provocateur, and we can all commit to working on that, but thatโs a far cry from โitโs unsafe to be a Jewish students on this campus.โ
And itโs definitely not fundamentally contrary to the liberal university campus or whatever for young adults to learn to discern between shitty and unshitty politics and to shun provocateurs.
At this point, I am utterly incapable of being personally hurt by anything the Vatican says about LGBTQ people. But I was still able to be intellectually disappointed by this doc.

To help you unpack Dignitas infinita, a new Vatican document on human dignity,
@PillarCatholic
invited moral theologians to offer their analytical reflections, as they read:
@tomri33le
That doesnโt appear to be what most people talking about antisemitism at Columbia mean, though, because there havenโt been many of those incidents connected to the current protest. If you know otherwise, please feel free to furnish the evidence.
This document was not that. It was incomprehensible. In the literal sense. It ignores the baseline questions.
โข Given the variety across human societies and history, what *is* gender? What can it mean to say that it's given by God?
โข What does God "say" with intersex people? Is that a theodicy question, like "why are some children born with terminal illnesses?", or a question about the goodness of diversity in God's creation, like "why are some children born with intellectual disabilities?"
In conclusion, I would never apply a "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" rule to the Vatican about queer people because, again, impossible. But I would at least suggest that those with nothing informed or intelligent to say should stay silent.
It honestly makes me question the honesty and rigor of all other documents put out by the Dicastery, especially those about topics that I understand less well and have been more willing to take their word on. If this is the Catholic intellectual heritage...

Being told to leave a private property where you live, pay, have a lease, and receive mail is...an eviction, and it's regulated by courts, and it can't happen without notice.
But that's impossible when the Vatican continually engages with a strawman and avoids the real argument. It's hard to take someone else seriously who consistently refuses to do you the same favor.
โข Is the sinfulness of body modification measured by intent or in more objective terms?
โข Short of body modification, what does it mean to deny sexual difference/one's gender? Is there some objective measure of femininity that I need to stay on the right side of? How?
It's long past time to have a real and honest conversation about how and whether the Church can think about gender in the modern world. I could, and would like to, engage with people who have a good faith belief that either *being* trans or *living as* trans are sins.
It's not that no LGBTQ person was convinced by this documentโI think many correctly recognize that most of us never will be. But I would posit that there'd be benefits to a doc that trans folks can understand, even if they ultimately disagree with it or find it hard to respect.
I'm more than a little disturbed by the number of you who appear to think that you can assault someone you invited onto your property if they stay on your property after you asked them to leave.
Like, the invitee should not do that, but you also very much cannot do that.
A Palestinian student at Columbia was arbitrarily suspended along with many other arbitrary suspensions today. Columbia is racially profiling students who have no involvement with the ongoing protests and suspending them with no due process.
We already held our nose and voted for Biden. *This* is step two after voting for Biden. You told us, โvote for him to preserve democracy and then you can protest and push him to pass better policy.โ We did that. Thatโs what this is.
@BarExamTutor
Rightโtrespass remains illegal, which is why stealing (from another private citizen with rights) is still illegal. If we had a public food commons, the way we have public green spaces and right of ways, *then* maybe you could draw that analogy.
Personally, I think itโs good for white women with tenure, wealth, respectability, and other privilege to leverage that privilege in exposing state violenceโbut what do I know.

Good thing your reading wouldn't hold. I could find about 1000 experts to testify to the fact that "Holocaust denial" in the accepted, academic definition involves denying or downplaying any specific Nazi atrocity.
over the weekend i hosted a reading where writers were only allowed to read things theyโd written between 6th and 12th grade. not to brag but like 100 people showed up and it was 14000 times more fun than basically every other โliterary eventโ iโve ever been to

In what universe do you read โglobalize the intifadaโ to mean that?? Intifada is principled resistance to Israel, and the call to globalize it is a call for all people everywhere to join the movement.
Hooo boy. "[R]ecords documenting what was taken during cleanups and the legal authorization for the seizure were altered or created up to two years after the cleanup occurred and in some instances just days before they were turned over to the plaintiffs."
The comments here are revealing, given the constant refrain of โif anti-Zionists arenโt antisemitic, why donโt they speak out against antisemitism at the protests???โ
They do, you justโฆreject itโฆ.
This is a key point from Eric. We have to be able to recognize growing & actual antisemitism, anti-Jewish hate, of the type described below, & condemn+tackle it, while also recognizing, separately, how bogus antisemitism charges are used to smear pro-Palestine activists & chants.
@mary_pezzulo
?? Arizona has been super purple for eight years now. We have a Democratic Governor, AG, and two Democratic (sort of) senators. Of course weโre a battleground state!
People are losing their goddamn minds.
1) E.C. is by all accounts a very kind person & protesting at this time/place was illegal
2) Laying hands on the protestor was also illegal
3) E.C. was not just the generic Jew at hand & he is not a target of protest because heโs Jewish
"It's pretty clear what's going on:ย students who feel impotence in the face of the horrors in Gaza are taking it out on a symbolic representative, i.e., their Jewish Dean.ย There's a word for that, and it's not one that reflects well on them." -
@BrianLeiter
Babies and children should be permitted in literally every public space except strip clubs and places with smoke until, like, 8:30 or 9 PM.
I think when we're having this discussion about place, people are often unconsciously thinking about time.
Every time kid free space discourse comes up, posts like these fill my feed and itโs like, have you heard of Wisconsin?
I went to a concert specifically designed for children this weekend and had an old fashioned. My neighborhood brewery has high chairs. LOL.
In response to a Fox News question about campus protests, the White House spokeswomen said the Department of Justice, Homeland Security and the Department of Education will be involved. This means the Biden administration may be pursuing federal charges against student protestors
I keep hearing that people wonโt become family doctors because the pay wonโt cover their loans, butโฆthe average ed debt of a young doctor is 200-250k, which is more or less what I had out of law school. And I definitely wonโt hit these salaries.
Is this real?
@lee_kovarsky
Someone is presumed to pose a threat to people or property if they weren't an invitee.
So the original status of the person when they entered the property matters a lot.
California law is very clear that you can only use force to eject a trespasser when they pose an immediate danger to a person or property, and someone you invited cannot be presumed to pose a danger (unlike someone who broke and entered).
Go yell at someone else; I'm right.
(I think prof dinners are an important part of law school culture and generally recoil at the ideas about professionalism that would make them out of bounds. But the intent question is interesting to me.)
@HarrisPeskin
@POSIndustries
I think someone singing the Russian national anthem at a pro-Ukraine protest would be a shitty person who deserves to be yelled at. Not threatened! But definitely jeered and shouted over.
Look, I get it. I understand that voting is harm reduction, etc. etc. These arguments have not only always worked for me, Iโve often made them.
But itโs not particularly helpful to ask about step two after abstaining when step two after voting hasnโt turned out great, either!
@paleselan
She left once they threatened to call police! So you might not have to actually engage the threat. They also have the option of threatening school-only discipline or bar reports.
@ArmandDoma
@UYBAroundCorner
No but like, if the public health justification is a sham and the only reason to ban smoking in public is to protect those of us who find it gross and unpleasant, I would fully support rolling the bans back. Undo it all.
This prof couple is trying to have it both ways! They are claiming it's their private home. They are also denying public university students who want to participate in a graduation dinner the right to do so on campus or in a restaurant, but forcing them to come to their house!
@lee_kovarsky
Ha! I was just linking to this to reply to you.
California's jury instruction on the use of force to eject a trespasser is pretty clear that there's has to be a threat to people or property. The reason I brought us invitee is because there's an exception.
@hubbstercat
@HannahPosted
Of course they doโwhich is why lots of people just start with "I'm from Rome" or "I'm from Bologna" and that's good and we all know what that means. If I say my state, people immediately know both that I'm American and where in America I live.
@EmilyKath319
I don't prefer or use medicalizing language for all this. But even as the Church fights/frames this in primarily medical terms, it fails to reckon with those terms. What is a "perfectly healthy organ" if modern medicine says it's making someone "sick"?
@MatthewBoedy
In order to have the students arrested for trespassing, they first had to suspend them for violating the student code of conduct. So wouldnโt action against tenure here have to come *before* arrest for trespassing?
@maxdubler
@LittleMammith
Sure, but how do you hit adulthood and not know that someone else violating the law/your boundaries does not give you the right to lay hands on them except in direct self-defense?
@bill_of_lefts
Anyway, besides all the obvious issues (disproportionate, no actual risk of damage to her property), California castle doctrine only kicks in when a person forcibly entered your home. The only way to deal with invitees like these students was to call the cops, unfortunately.
I don't think I've ever been in a brewery (that serves food) before 8 PM that *didn't* have at least one child in it. I'm trying to figure out which puritan, backwards-ass states y'all are living in.
@EmilyKath319
Sure, but that assumes, without explaining, that dysphoria is not a legitimate condition and that GAS is not its legitimate treatment. If it is, then a mastectomy to treat dysphoria is *very much* like a mastectomy to treat, say, a man "with intersex characteristics."
@cgreathouse
@BarExamTutor
Is it โinvite onlyโ if every single 3L students gets invited? Could they have legally chosen to only invite, say, white students?
@Ruth_Mensch
Okay, but I did a little google and itโs not technically against the rules, just a strict social norm that nobody has ever violated haha.
@bill_of_lefts
When the YLS dean invited people over to her home, she always did so with her official email. It sounds like this was similarโan official school Ramadan event sent out on official school channels. Messy, messy.
@SethJoh44336031
@keenye93
Not because there are places I wonโt follow her, but because she would be teaching verifiably false things, a gospel of bad news, and it would tell me beyond all doubt that she lies and thus cannot be the voice of the Holy Spirit.
@SethJoh44336031
@keenye93
Iโm going to bow out of this conversation now because it isnโt/canโt go anywhere good. I cannot express enough how quickly I would leave the Church if she doctrinally said that the races are โreal.โ
